Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/30/2023

Just did Metabolic Med Ball Blast. I really like that one. 37 minutes long and alternates cardio with the ball, and a weight based move, but all the moves are fairly cardio intense. Sunny here today and I hope it sticks around. We got more rain late yesterday and we really don't need more.

Valerie I hope you have safe travels back to Washington. DH and I have each found one tick on us so far this year. Little black ones and we get them every year, but either they are too small or just don't like people because they don't attach. Of course, once we know they are there we start feeling like we feel one on us. We will have a few weeks seeing them and then they pretty much vanish. We bring them in from out walks and sometimes we just find them walking around or climbing walls.

Carolyn my shopping day doesn't coincide with any farmers markets, but when I used to go to one it would get crazy busy, and you had to park at an adjacent business. They've moved it into a mall parking lot now and it even has a playground.

Diane Sue sometimes you just have to adjust midstream. It sounds like you were able to get a good workout in.

Hi Judy.

Good afternoon. This morning I did yoga for 18 minutes. Judy, thanks for starting us off this week.

Cathy, great job with Metabolic Med Ball Blast. They have a similar setup for the market where I go. It’s located next to a shopping center that only has a couple of businesses there. That lot provides plenty of parking, but the crowds keep growing. A few months ago an adjacent bowling alley started to allow parking on their lot. The market is open Wednesday and Saturday from 9-1:00. I guess that doesn’t interfere with the bowling alley hours.

Hello to Diane Sue and Valerie. Have a nice day day everyone.

we did our 11 hr drove and made it back. wow... its a long day. the drive isnt hard except being long.

these are deer ticks... I think. not a tick expert but we expect we picked them up sitting on a ridgetop midway thru our hike that day. there are a lot of deer and elk in the area and they tend to sit in similar spots. lots of elk poop around where we sat, but that true of the entire area. hard to walk anywhere that isnt peppered with it. I usually spray my clothes and pack with pymethrin but hadn't done it yet because I thought it was still too cold. obviously wrong on that! WA doesnt have anywhere near the tick problem that we find in MT.

Well I was about 35 minutes into Kick, Box and Bag when Derek started responding to me, and I finally gave up to message him. We have a big mess for his move out and we can do nothing but roll with it. There's a big snow storm hitting the mid/western parts of the upper peninsula right now and lasting into tonight, NMU is closed today. Today the first day of exams. Derek had one exam today and has yet to hear from his professor on the reschedule. Technically exams are rescheduled for Friday, but most science majors already have exams Friday. He was going to do his 8:00 exam and move out and we'd be on the road before noon. I'll need to cancel my hotel by tomorrow night, I think, I have to check and there are no rooms in Marquette for Friday because of graduation. My hope is that they can't move exams to Saturday because of that. It'll mean getting home late Friday, but he's got orientation at the zoo Sunday, so we don't have much to play with there. If I can't stay in Marquette Thursday night, it'll also mean no hikes for me. Hopefully, he finds out soon, so we can at least make plans. But this has really messed up everyone. Fun Fact: all the seasonal plow drivers, were already let go, so people on the FB pages that talk about road conditions, say once you are outside Marquette it's a mess. Snow is very heavy and wet, temps started the day right at freezing and are going above, so it's gonna be a big sloppy mess and they were already under flood warnings. Ugh

Valerie I think what we get here is almost all dog ticks. With the yard fenced, we occasionally get deer coming in during the winter to eat apples, but for the most part they are acres away from us. Glad you made it back okay.

Carolyn nice job with the yoga.

cold weather doesn't kill ticks, they just get less active. they were probably living on a nice warm bodied deer or elk or were waiting for one when I plopped my butt down on the ground along with my pack. two climbed on to make me their meal. they were probably on my clothes. neither had attached so I didn't notice them until I got dressed in the same clothes in the morning. they aren't tiny but are hard shelled and need to be crushed to be killed. I checked all my clothes thoroughly. still washed everything. I spray my spring clothes every year. it was cold so wore winter things. next visit I will spray all gear before we go anywhere. spray on permethrin is the best treatment but it wears off with washing/wearing multiple times. you spray the clothing, not your skin! you can buy pre treated clothing but I dont want to replace all my gear. I spray my backpack because it sits on the ground and could transfer a tick easily. I dont spray boots because of abrasion from vegetation and water wears off the permethrin. I focus on pants, shirts and pack. these are deer ticks. they carry Lyme and rocky mt spotted fever plus they are disgusting! yuck! it takes them time to attach themselves to you so there is a big time window to check for and kill them. milder temps are believed to cause more tick problems for wildlife, especially moose. the ticks sit on vegetation and hope on when animals or people pass by. just cause there is no elk sitting there right now doesn't mean ticks are gone too. we usually toss our clothing in the bathtub when we get home from a hike so if we picked up anything, its easy to find. they are dark brown to black and hide easily in dark clothing. this is not our first rodeo with ticks. it helps to spray boots and socks too but I wash socks every wearing and I have lots of socks. the spray doesnt soak into boots very well.

wow cathy that is some late season snow. people probably have taken off snow tires by now too, plus people seem to forget their driving skills because they think winter is over. hiking might be a muddy mess due to heavy wet snow but hope you find a workable solution.

This morning I did IMAX 4, combos 1-5, and the bonus abs. That was 39 minutes and 268 calories burned. Average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 178. I added the Bonus Chair Stretch for another 16 minutes and 29 calories.

Valerie, I’m glad that you made it back safely. Long drives are very exhausting.

Cathy, you have a lot to work through with the snow complications for your trip. I hope that it all works out for you.

Waving hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

Today I did CDorner Step and Strike, 47 minutes, 247 calories, heart rate 131/168, 3,966 steps. This had good music and alternated 5 minutes step and 5 minutes kickboxing. I then did an older CDorner workout that Chris posted for Sunday, All Standing Toned Arms, 23 minutes, 65 calories, heart rate 98/125. I finished with Yoga with Adriene Yoga for Spinal Health Day 12 of a 30 day program, 18 minutes, 33 calories, heart rate 81/93. Total time was 88 minutes, 345 calories, 4,265 steps.

All Standing Toned Arms

Each move is done for 1 minute
Chris uses light weights as this is geared for beginners, at 8# and a lighte pair. I went heavier

Yesterday was a rest day. My husband and I went to lunch/dinner as usual and I got my usual salmon and broccoli. When we got home we did some yard work and I potted one of the azaleas that arrived. The other I still need to plant, but the spot I originally planned still holds too much water. When I dug out the gardenia that appeared to be dead the hole was full of water way down into the ground. So I think that will not work and also it would be full sun. I still have to finish mulching and stuff.

Judy, thanks for getting us started this week.

Cathy, I remember med ball blast. I tried it once, but at the time I was doing physical therapy for that shoulder and it just did not work well for me. That was a couple of years before the surgery. It looked like fun though. Rescheduling and hotel and planning sounds complicated. We are back in the upper 60s which is nice. I hope that things clear up and work out for your trip. I get texts a lot when I am working out. I look at my watch and if I can I keep up the workout till a time when I am willing to stop. If it is a family member I will answer right away though.

Valerie, cleaning up everything and making sure you did not take ticks home with you sounds like a job. I do not see many ticks around here. At our last home people were discussing ticks being in the woods by our houses and someone had got lime disease. Also my other dog passed away with a tick born disease. I told the bet we had hardly any yard and mostly concrete and he knew I used Frontline on my dogs. He said that it can still happen.

Carolyn, nice work on getting in your morning yoga yesterday and today's I Max 4 combos 1-5. I have eyed that one. I am finding though that the workouts where you go down to the floor and come back up makes my knee hurt lately. I have to change some moves. I like both of the step workouts in that series. Odd thing is tonight my knee feels pretty good when it was not wanting to cooperate with some of the step going side to side and even the yoga it hurt to balance on one leg as it was too much pressure. I am hoping this is not something else to deal with.

Just finished Upper Body Bliss. Nice name. LOL 47 minutes and she packs in all upper body areas including abs. 5-15 lb weights and tubing/band. Checked with Derek this morning and we are still on track for him to keep his original checkout and be on the road by noon. Yay! This snow was crazy heavy, wet and created slush on the main roads. Inches deep slush. And while campus which is at a lower elevation by the lake got 6" maybe 8", just 15 miles west, higher elevation, they got 2'. With fewer plows out a lot of people were getting stuck. NMU is open today, but told those who commute to use their own judgment. Right, you have exams, and really need stressful decisions added in to the mix. Glad Derek is on campus and apparently next year the place they will be living is within walking distance.

Valerie you're very right that hiking will be questionable. I may have to stick with walking along the bay and Presque Isle which is in Marquette, but has wooded trails that would have gotten less snow.

Diane Sue nice job with Step and Strike, arms and yoga. Yeah I check stuff from family. Derek especially has an amazing talent for texting during my workout. LOL I have specific sounds linked to the boys numbers, so I know it's them. It seems like a lot of Cathe's workouts hit shoulders.

Carolyn great job with IMAX 4, combos 1-5, and the bonus abs, and the chair stretch.

This morning I did Muscle Max timesaver which was 56 minutes and 249 calories burned. Average heart rate was 113 and maximum heart rate was 141. It‘s been a little over 3 years since I last did this workout and I had forgotten how much I like it.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Step and Strike, Toned Arms, and Yoga with Adrienne. IMAX 4 has a few moves that I modify to make them work better for me. Going down and doing that heel click is one of them.

Cathy, great job with Upper Body Bliss. I’m glad that things are looking positive for your trip to pick up Derek.

Hello to Valerie and Judy.

Saturday I did a 45 minute Peloton ride and Sunday I did Live PHA Supersets #2 and an extra 10 minute Peloton upper body workout. Yesterday I worked 6 hours and got a lot of steps in. Today is an active rest day. I did an hour of Yin Yoga and mobility work. It's been raining the past 2 days and quite cold for this time of year. Hopefully next week will be better.

Cathy-Great job with Metabolic Med Ball Blast, Kick, Box and Bag and Upper Body Bliss. Med Ball Blast is one of my favorites. I hope you have a good trip to pick up Derek.

Carolyn-Great job with yoga, IMAX 4, combos 1-5 with bonus abs and chair stretch and Muscle Max timesaver. I haven't done Muscle Max in ages. I need to revisit it. It was one of my first Cathe workouts when I started doing them in 2013.

Valerie-I'm glad you made it back ok. Long drives are very tiring.

Diane Sue-Great job with the CDorner workouts and Yoga with Adriene.

Today I did CDorner Low Impact or High at home cardio, (low for me), 31 minutes, 143 calories, heart rate 120/147,2004 steps. This one is several different styles. Started with kickbox, then dance, tabata, and last was cardio mobility. She shows low options and I used those as the tabatas were partly on the floor. I then did BOss Loops timesaver #3 floorwork, glutes and core 36 minutes, 92 calories, heart rate 91/127, 367 steps. I finished with CDorner's latest stretch mobility 15 or 30 minute with a chair (option no chair) She does the first half using a chair for if someone is at work can do. I think it seems to be upper first half then lower. I did 19 minutes, 24 calories. I think from what I have read about the knee is I need to strengthen the glutes and back of the thighs rather than the quads right now. Total time was 86 minutes, 259 calories, 2,371 steps.

Got up at 6:00 and did Booty Burn. Uses the firewalker loop and fabric loop. Shopping this morning and packing this afternoon.

Judy great job with the Peloton ride, PHA Supersets #2 and Peloton upper body, yoga and mobility workouts.

Diane Sue nice job with Low Impact or High at home cardio, Boss Loop Timesaver and mobility. I hope your knee issue resolves soon.

Carolyn great job with Muscle Max timesaver. That's a workout I haven't done in a long time.

we rode our usual road ride this morning, an hour and 10 min, 15 miles. its so much nicer now that many people have gone back to work and it was a lovely spring morning. lots blooming ( ah-choo) and birds chirping. still doing my therapy work every day. yesterday was a serious garden day. when we are gone for a week there is a lot to do to catch up. this is peak growing and planting season here.

some of the exercises are resisted bridges and resisted clamshells. have anyone of you found a band that doesnt roll up aggressively and cut into thighs when you do this work? mine is a closed loop but does not have enough resistance so I could use a new tougher one anyway.

oh yes, knees the weak point for so many of us. mine were fine ubntil issues with the right one that is not perfect. I found the injection in my knee in january helped a lot. its a thick fluid that makes things move more smoothly. I think its hyaluronic acid. not cortisone.

This morning I did JS Stride and Step for 30 minutes and 211 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 152.

Judy, great job with the Peloton ride, PHA Supersets, Peloton Upper Body, and Yin Yoga.

Diane Sue, nice work with CDorner Low Impact or High, Boss Loops Glutes and Core, and CDorner stretch mobility.

Cathy, great job with doing Booty Burn at 6:00 a.m.

Valerie, nice job with the ride today and therapy exercises. I only have the Cathe loops, both latex and the fabric loops. I like the fabric loops but I’m not sure if they work for your therapy.

Have a great day everyone.

Today I did CDorner Cardio to the Beat/low impact/standing, 31 minutes, 189 calories, heart rate 144/170, 3,446 steps. I them did Raw Back, 22 minutes, 84 calories, heart rate 109/128. I finished with CDorner Stretch and mobility chair from yesterday doing all but the final relaxation on the floor, 23 minutes, 38 calories. Total time 76 minutes, 311 calories, 3,879 steps. I will probably take the day off tomorrow as I have my yearly doctor visit in the morning and they sent a message saying to come 30 minutes early so I am going to be battling work and school traffic. Generally by the time I get home and find something to eat since I have to go fasted for blood work I am not wanting to work out.

Raw Back 4 sets of 3 moves
set 1
seated rows 20# dbs 10 reps
pullover 15# db 10 reps
1 arm row using step 20# db 10 reps
set 2-4
seated rows 20# dbs 10 reps
pullover 15# db 10 reps
1 arm row 25# db 10 reps
finisher 10# dbs run row seated and scap squeeze 10# dbs

Cathy, nice job on Booty Burn. I would probably like that one. I like working with the loop bands.
Good luck getting things packed up and ready to go. Today I had tons of texts through my workout, but they were all texts for packages on the way. If I get calls and texts from family I have different tones. I can see the texts on my phone so I don't stop if it is not family. I used to have a Tarzan yell when my husband texted me and it had a lady in the grocery store parking lot cracking up.

Carolyn, that going down and heel click is a no for me. I can go down, but the heel click and feet hitting the ground at that angle does not work well for me in I Max 4. That time saver Muscle Max is still long. Nice work today with JS Stride and Step.

Valerie, things are really blooming here too. I went out and cut some roses. My bushes are full already and tons of buds. I kind of wish as much as they have already grown, that I had cut them back further. I thinned and cut about half off. I still have work to do. Our lawn person we have now does landscaping work, but I do as much as I can myself.
The old Cathe bands were wider and seemed heavier than the ones she has now and seemed to not roll up as much. The fabric ones do not roll up as they are wider but moving them through much of a range would need to be with the light one and it would be tough on clams. My problem with them with some workouts that require pulling the band off and on when they are the fabric is that I have a hard time quickly slipping them off over my shoes as they are so small. It may be just the ones I have as I did not purchase the Cathe ones. I got some that were recommended by CDorner well before Cathe came out with some.

thats the thing with the bands. they roll up even if they are flat and not twisted to begin with. my exercises program changed yesterday. I'm not using the band this week. I like those exercises. if I could find a band that was more comfortable I'd do more often. If I keep the band flat for bridges, it's rolled by the time I get to #5. I have theraband I could cut to fit but its hard to get the size right. if none of them work better, I'll use what I have. the best one I got from a PT place and is a circular one , not tied together like therabands. therabands are twisted to begin with.

it was 70 degrees yesterday and lovely. I spent afternoon at dentist getting some work done on my lower teeth that were wearing off at the top edges. I got them restored and built back up. it was a lot of fussy work but my teeth are very good. I'm not getting them ground down and capped or crowned unless there is a serious problem. it was expensive but not compared to caps or crowns. modern dentistry is amazing but stunningly costly.

This morning I did LiTE Body Weight and Bands. It was 44 minutes and 235 calories burned. My average heart rate was 122 and maximum heart rate was 156. I haven’t done this workout but once or twice in all the time that I’ve had the LiTE series. It’s one that I usually skip or switch to something else. It was actually a good workout so I’m not sure why I haven‘t done it more.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDorner Cardio, Raw Back, and CDorner stretch. I hope that your medical appointment goes well. I would not want to workout after that either.

Valerie, my Cathe bands are the older wider ones. I think that they all roll up some as you move with them.

Cathy, you hope that your trip is going well.

Waving hello to Judy.
