Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/28

Hi all, I'm back. gone for 4 days and busy! We didn't hit the best weather, but this was the time we had, so we went anyway. did all we intended.
I didn't report it, but before we left I did the other half of burn sets, and also
Afterburn. I had not done it in a long time so did the premix with just one run thru each section, followed by Core 1. a very nice workout in under 45 minutes. it was not anywhere near as hard as I seemed to remember. not easy but certainly do-able. I've strengthened my core substantially and things I thought were difficult aren't bad anymore.... especially things like mountain climbers.

we started with a desert walk of 2 miles to look at a large field of blooming hedge hog cacti. very pretty. then to a state park near Grand Coulee dam. there is fascinating history of glacial lake Missoula breaking thru an ice dam ( multiple times, a long time ago) and causing the massive distinctive erosion, carving out the coulees. it was fairly recently recognized as the cause of the unusual topography there. the state park has as its center a large rock formation that was left behind. we climbed up there ( there's a trail) lovely and interesting, but windy as all heck, guessing steady 50 mph on the top. not ideal for looking at wildflowers! moved on to another area that's a xc ski area in winter but in spring/summer/fall is mountain bike heaven. we rode for several hours two days in a row. it was tough but fun. cold and windy, no one but us riding. the uphills on a mt bike will work thighs like nothing else. camped in the parking lot, again cold and windy but clear. then on to another park, again the only ones there. xc skied for a couple miles, and then home. there are real advantages to going when weather is less than ideal. weather is turning warmer now and we plan a garden weekend to avoid the mob scene that 70+ temps will bring.

Love LOVE Italian food ... but I limit the frequency and quantity. I don't want to look like either Ina or Lidia either.... I have several of Ina's recipes..... and will say that serving size is a big part of the problem. usually her portions are enormous.

DH and I went to work on my road bike. the first thing we did was level the seat..... it was tipped up in front. not a lot, though. we checked the seat height etc, and everything else seems to be spot on. I hope I can ride once or twice this weekend to see if that helps with the saddle sore business. I hate to be a wimp... I get so sore, something must be fixable. my neighbor bought a new bike that's partly carbon fiber and loves it, so maybe that will be next. she was able to ride more often and longer right away so maybe you get what you pay for.

Welcome iron girl. If you have any suggestions/ideas on getting a road bike seat more comfy, please chime in. this has been a ongoing problem, just can't get past about 2 hours without misery.

Joan, check in more often... sorry about son and DIL but it has sounded kind of hopeless all along. hopefully they both will be able to resolve this amicably and get on with their lives. Yours too, Josie.

Hi ladies!

The past couple of days I have been a cardio fool! Ended up not walking chester last night. Got home late from work. Ended up doing Tabatacise with fire walkers. All 5 of them with them on!!!! Took them off for the step blasts of course. Wow what a workout. Loved it. Woke up this morning and ran 2 miles on TM. This afternoon it was Leslie's 2 mile belly blast walk with the girls. Got home and did heavy bag for 30 mins. Tomorrow will certainly be a rest day for me. I have earned it.

Welcome irongrl!!!! I too like double workouts. I usually try and run on my TM in the morning on days I have weights. On non weight days I like a really good cardio workout plus walking my 110lb yellow lab named chester usually 2.5 to 3 miles. He is a workout in himself. I am 51 years young :) and have been working out with Cathe since 1994. Love her style and enthusiasm. Your husband is correct about adding in weights. Once I started incorporating weights in my routine it changed by entire physique. Love the results. Like garance mentioned we are doing STS. I am in recovery week from Meso 1 and garance is right behind me. STS is such a great program and worth every penny. I wish I had purchased it sooner than I did. Cathe has deal of the days with her dvd's and this week she had STS for $179 plus I think you can still use her coupon to get 15% off. Such a great deal. I am sure it will come around again.

Garance...speaking of STS how are you doing with it? Do you noticed significant improvement since the first time you have done this? That Maine Zumba instructor was all in the news for a while. Didn't the woman in town think it odd that so many men were going to Zumba
classes??? Lol!

Valerie...your vacation sounded incredible despite the weather. Like I mentioned before I love that you and your husband are so active and enjoy the activities you do.

Deb....can't wait to hear the stories with the road trip with the dogs!

Josie....good for you with the bike ride. That is certainly some ride in 7 days. I have done the Pan-Mass Challenge 8 times. Garance might be aware of this. It is for the jimmy fund and it is big here in Massachusetts in August. 212 miles in two days. My bum gets so sore. I can't imagine over 500 miles!

Have a great nigh ladies!

Have a great night!

Hi Ladies,

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Deb-I’m really glad I have my husband pushing me to do more strength training. Left to my own devices I would spend all of my workout time on cardio. I’m glad to have found this forum and the Cathe.com website too. I am learning a lot.

Garance-My husband wants to get me the STS system for Christmas. Hopefully I’ll be ready for it by then

Josie-That Aids ride sounds awesome! I would love to do something like that. Good luck!

Valerie-I have the Specialized Sonoma 155 seat on my spin bike and so far it’s been great. It’s very comfortable for me, but it did take a few rides for me to get used to it.

Today I walk/jogged 3 miles in the morning. Tonight I did the Cathe Slow & Heavy bicep and tricep workout. I was really struggling to keep up and wasn’t able to do everything she was doing but I did as much as I could. My arms were shaking by the end. I think I will try the Slow & Heavy leg workout tomorrow.

Judy

Thank you!

I love yellow labs! Sounds like he is a big one!

STS really sounds like a great program. I'll have to let my husband know about the sales. Maybe I can get it sooner than Christmas :)

Good morning and Happy Friday!

I took the afternoon off yesterday, it was too nice to work. I have time to use up anyway. John and I had a Mexican food lunch, then I took a nap. Lovely day. Both dogs were groomed yesterday, they look great. We could hardly go to a Fox Terrier specialty show next week with them looking like they did. Keegan looks like he lost 5 pounds..all hair.

Garance, yes the million dollar question...why is the food you love all the bad stuff? I don't think I ever saw anyone drool over a plate of brussel sprouts. (plain with no butter!)..

Josie, great job on that series you are doing!

Valerie, your trip sounds great. Hope you get the seat issued worked out for your bike...and your sore butt!

Lori, how old is Chester? ( you may have mentioned before but I sometimes have a sieve for a mind)..does he walk with a nice loose lead or pull you? Our 2 pull us around, even with all the obedience training, heeling etc, when they are out on a walk it can be crazy. I can't count walking them as any workout, DH strolls, I have to force myself to slow down to stay in pace with him. I should do what you do, go alone after dinner or something and walk faster.

Judy, good job on Slow & Heavy.. that is one of my favorite Cathe workouts. I would just go lighter so you can finish the reps...I agree with all others...STS is probably Cathe's best series....then xTRain...

Off to get ready for the day.....one more day until the weekend! Anyone have any fun things planned?

Take care,

I used to ride a lot on an old unpadded leather seat. that bike died. we gave up the activity for years. then bought a new bike and restarted riding 3 years ago. have been unable to get comfortable on this seat. the first hour or 90 minutes are fine and then it suddenly becomes torture. I've had other problems with the bike not shifting so I have reasons to stop and take a few minute break, which helps. I have padded shorts... those and chamois butter don't help. On the spin bike I don't get sore because I get off the seat regularly. same with the mt bike.
Specialized bikes are on the wish list... maybe a better bike will have a better fitting seat. I'm uneasy because I need to sit the seat for a good 90 minutes before I can tell if will be better for me, and that's hard to do when 'shopping".

I used to be almost exclusively a runner though I never did "serious" marathon mileage. IMO as we get older it's best to do a variety of activities to avoid over use injuries that get more common with age. I got into weights when I realized my upper body wasn't getting enough work, and without it I might develop upper arm "flap" among other horrors.
sometimes "keeping up with Cathe" is not possible... do what you can do with good form, and gradually work your way up. weighted gloves are a good way to transition from one weight to the next level if the jump is too big...like when 5 lbs is too easy but 8 too much.

Hi Ladies,

I’m so happy it’s Friday. Today is a rest day, but tomorrow I will be running 3.5 miles in the morning and doing my cardio recovery DVD after. No plans for the weekend other that working on my tan ;)

Judy, check out the web-site for the ride. Next year will be my third time and the route is amazing and the support along the way is awesome. The food is great too and some people actually gain weight while on the ride ;)

Garance, I miss your posts on what you were cooking for the day. Now that you are retired, do you cook more? I plan on cooking more and trying different things now that I will have more time.

Hi to Valerie, Joan and Deb. Have a great weekend!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did disk 12 of STS legs (54 min.). My legs feel rubbery at the moment. This disk is relentless. I bet my hamstrings are going to be sore tomorrow from the ball roll-ins.

Valerie, that sounds like a really adventurous vacation. Maybe you could pose on the bike in a store window for 90 minutes wearing something risqué--you know, like those calendars with girls on motorcycles. Just kidding. For me, it's shoes. I buy from zappos and wear them around the house for 90 minutes, and if they don't feel good, I send them back.

Deb, yesterday was heavenly, so I did take Max for a long walk. It's easy to get exercise from this because the only way is downhill and steep, so when I walk back it's pretty challenging. There's a "Sheep to Shawl" fair at the Rural Lands, so I will probably be doing that tomorrow afternoon after Housemax, then some friends are coming over for mint juleps and to watch the Kentucky Derby. Probably order a pizza.

Judy, maybe you could try ebay or Amazon to see if anyone is selling STS. Originally it was 99 dollars if I remember correctly. Of course, I also had to buy the tower for chin-ups and for chest work with a heavy barbell and I think that was another 99 dollars. Slow and Heavy is a great workout too. I have that on video.

Hey, Josie, are you affected by those fires they keep reporting? Stay safe, girl!

Garance,

I'm not close to the fires, but some of my friends are. It is a shame, because the places where the fires are is where I have ridden before and it is beautiful I don't know how it will look after.

Josie

Hi Ladies,

Deb-I like the Slow and Heavy DVD, I think I will be using that one regularly until I get STS.I really like how the DVDs are set up and that there are 3 different workouts on this one.

Valerie-I definitely need to work on my upper body strength. I used to run long distances regularly and had to switch to biking more as I was getting running injuries. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really had to cut back on my running mileage and to walk/jog a lot more.

Josie-I’ll check out the website. There’s a ride in Iowa, where I’m originally from, that sounds like that. RAGBRAI is a week long ride across Iowa. I never did it but I hear it’s like a weeklong party on wheels with tons of great food and the potential for weight gain even with riding 60+miles a day!

Garance-My husband is a big ebay fan and he is keeping an eye out for STS DVDs.

This morning I did a Spinerval cycling workout then I did X-Train Legs and Core Max workout 1 (the one with no equipment) tonight. I wasn’t able to do everything in the leg workout. I have to order some discs and fire walker loops. I really liked the dixie cup lunges! I could sure feel those working.

I don’t have any special plans this weekend but I signed up for a mountain bike race next Saturday. I’ve never done one before and this one is short and not on a very technical course. It probably sounds kind of crazy  but it’s just something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I just decided to sign up and do it.

Have a great weekend!:)

Judy

Good morning ladies!

Housemax is on the agenda today. Going to fit in Ride at some point after I walk Chester. Family coming for cookout tomorrow so this will be nice.

Deb...chester is 9 years old and STILL acts like he is 1 years old. He pretty much drags me during our walks. He actually holds his lead in is mouth and pulls. He really thinks he is taking me for a walk. I love it though. Makes a great workout out so I let him think what he wants. :)

I have the slow and heavy dvd but never tried it. Bought it when it came out. Back then I always hoped to start with weights and never got around to it. Glad I finally did. I will put this into my rotation after STS to try out.

Josie...hoping your friends are safe. Please keep us updated. So sad.

Garance...yes disc 12 gets you!!!! Very tough. Will you all wear hats while enjoying the Derby???? Love seeing all the hats on TV.

Have a great weekend all!

Hi to Valerie and Judy and Joan!

Good morning,

Another lovely day here....and it's supposed to stay this way all weekend...Yay!

Josie, It's so great that you do that ride each year! Love the pics!

Garance, Yes, we got STS at the presale bargain price, but had to buy all the equipment that went with it, and that is what added up! Tower, weighted vest, etc etc...I even got a door pull up bar, before the tower I think...

Judy, Slow & Heavy, great workouts....

Lori, Chester sounds like my 2 crazy dogs...they both pull like that, so that is why it is really difficult to take them both alone at one time....

Dinner out tonight, my brother and SIL are taking John and me to dinner..my birthday gift from them....we are going to a really nice place that I have not been to yet...hopefully get some HouseMax or YardMax done before we leave.

Take care
