Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/23/2023

Well late Friday afternoon, my husband decided to throw my Saturday out of whack. He found a potential car for Derek in Fort Wayne. Now, I did not want to go, because I have no real say on this purchase, but he decided since there's a zoo there, that we should also visit the zoo and working against me yesterday was their opening day. Now since I haven't been sleeping well I woke up about 3:30. And finally a little after 5 gave up trying to sleep. Ended up working out, showering, walking in the yard before he got up. Then off we went. I managed to limit my involvement to riding with him in the first car he drove. Clearly none of my comments were helping, so I declined on the second one. He's now dithering on the purchase even though he liked it and someone else will probably buy it first. Go to the zoo. It is NOT warm. Cloudy and temps hovering around 50 with the wind at various states. A lot of animals weren't out because of the temps and it was busy. I could have predicted all that, but I'd have wasted my breath. LOL Back home and end result is likely no car and a very subpar zoo visit. Didn't really bother me as I know I'll go again with Derek this summer and I got in my 10,000 steps.

I fell asleep just before 9 last night, woke up at 5:30, so I did Total Body Barre: Intermediate/Advanced. I really like that workout. Name is rather misleading as there is just about a 12 minute barre segment at the end. Uses light weights and yoga ball, there's a ab segment right before the barre work. Then breakfast and I did P30 Low Impact Hiit and the Extended Stretch. This is my ideal morning. Now I just need to put it on repeat.

There have been a number of crashes in MI involving large numbers of cars in recent years. People always want to blame speed and if the weather/road is already bad that can be the case at least at the beginning of the incident. I've seen the way crazy people drive on bad roads here. But when there's a fast weather change weather from snow, hail or rain, there's really not much you can do unless you can find an exit and stay put till the crazy lets up.

Valerie thanks for the article. Very interesting. We have seen them in zoos. Passed it on to Derek. Hope your travels went smoothly.

Diane Sue given that the disks aren't listed as equipment for any of the workouts, I can't image she uses them for many exercises. I think the one I saw was a side slide lunge, so there's probably an alternative you can do.

Hi to Carolyn and Judy.

Good morning. I did my usual yoga for 18 minutes today.

Valerie, great job with Metabolic Total Body and slowly getting back to weight work. Going light and taking your time is certainly the best way to go. I hope that your drive is safe today.

Cathe, you had quite a day with car shopping and zoo trip with your husband. It’s good that you could follow it up with a good night’s sleep and morning exercise session. Great job with Total Body Barre, P30 Low Impact HiiT and Extended Stretch.

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

We got here in 11 hours of decent driving conditions. before major tourist seson too. The WA state DOT transportation app is so useless! It showed stop/ go traffic for a huge road section over the pass. we had another route if it was actually stop and go traffic for 15 miles so you need to guess whether to believe it's true or not. No other state with road reports that we have driven in does such a sloppy awful job. Over a mountain pass. For no reason, it was in error, road was completely clear. later on in the day the "troad blockage" disappeared without explanation. there are traffic cameras but none along that stretch. I’m not sure why it's so inaccurate. This has happened before. untrustworthy.
I did nothing but sit today and read but we got here intact. Lots of snow left. Made dinner, crashing early. Going to try to hike tomorrow even if not acclimated. ..
Cathy your DH is quite the challenge. Car shopping is always awful just like driving with disconnected drivers. Some folks never learn. drivinhg here in WA has gotten way more aggressive since the police have been somewhat curtailed in their ability to chase people down. Im not a fan of these policies because it seems to embolden the crazy drivers who believe they can drive whatever speed they want regardless of conditions. makes for some spectcular crashes. but if one sppeeds like its the Indy 500, others follow along and it really gets crazy out there.
I had no clue about snot otters before this! cannibalistic besides. fascinating.

I love slider disks. I use them almost daily. Really helps those inner thigh adductors. I have the Cathe ones with the removable fabric covers so work on smooth or carpet. Part of my therapy work. 45 side slides each side daily. I always used to get sore inner thighs but now that I use those regularly, I don't. this has to do with knee cap tracking too and I think it helps me a lot.

Did Advanced Step Choreography when I got up and just did a 15 minute workout I put together from P30 Mobility. A lot of times I don't want to do a full 30 minutes. It was 35 going to 50 today and I was sitting having breakfast and it started snowing. Really, snow. Even if it doesn't last just seeing it at this time of year is not a plus. We are supposed to have some sun later so that will be a plus. Even though I was awake for a couple of hours during the night, I fell asleep at 9:30 and got up at 6 to workout. Trying to establish a pattern. I always used to be up between 5:30-6:00 for years and I really want to get back to that. I have to put together a new rotation as today ended mine. Going to use the same pattern of type of workout, but different ones.

Valerie I'm glad you made it there safely. The Michigan drive app isn't always right, but it's usually pretty accurate and I check the cameras so I can actually see road conditions visually. Plus I'm on a bunch of UP lists including one specifically for people to report road conditions. I hope you are able to get a hike in today. DH and I have very different car buying strategies. Mine basically involves deciding what I want and buying it. When I got my car, I went to the dealership, drove it and bought it. He cannot even conceive of doing that. But that's pretty much how I do all my shopping. I'm not into going to lots of places or web sites and looking at all the options. I decide what I want and then just get it.

Carolyn great job with the yoga!

Hi to Diane Sue and Judy.

This morning I did a portion of Low Impact Circuit, cardio only, which is all step. I plan to do weights tomorrow so I didn’t do the circuit and I didn’t want to overdo the step. My time was 24 minutes and 160 calories burned. Average heart rate 128 and maximum heart rate 160. Then I did Jessica Smith’s 15 Minute Calorie Burst for another 120 calories.

Valerie, I’m glad that you made it safely. It’s very annoying to get erroneous information from a traffic app. The sliders are good for leg strengthening, but I’m very cautious about doing cardio with them.

Cathy, great job with Advanced Step Choreography and part of P30 Mobility. I try to keep a regular schedule for going to bed and getting up. That works best for me. I hope that it helps you.

Waving hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

I dont do cardio with sliders, just strength training. ther are a few sort of cardio sections with sliders but I dont push it too hard. they really dont resemble xc skiing motion either, even if she acts like it does. . got in a good hike this morning, 2.5 hours. there is still a ton of snow here so the least snowy trail we could think of was still troublesome. the snow gets a crust that collapses shortly after you step on it. some steps but not all stps and not always the same depth. very jarring and dangerous actually to do any distance. we zigged around it as much as possible but then it became unavoidable so we turned around. even the animals up and leave because its so hard to travel on. outside the park we saw pronghorns, elk, deer, bison and bighorns. a lot of critters are staying outside the snow zone until the snow dissipates. also saw a black bear and a whole lot of carcasses. its been a tough winter here.

cathy thats our approach too, research what we want and go buy it. all the maneuvering and quibbling never changed much of anything. we find a dealer who has good service policies and buy it there, which narrows the field to about 3 places right away. not going to drive all over and buy at a place I dont plan to service it at.

Yesterday I did a 45 minute Peloton ride. Today I did Cathe Live PHA Supersets and a 10 minute Peloton core workout.

Cathy-That sounds like a long day on Saturday. It's too bad it wasn't warmer for going to the zoo. The weather was unpleasant over the weekend and this week isn't much better. Hopefully next week it will start to get better. Great job on Total Body Barre: Intermediate/Advanced and Advanced Step Choreography. I still have the barre one on my to do list but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Carolyn-Great job with yoga, Low Impact Circuit, cardio only and Jessica Smith’s 15 Minute Calorie Burst. I agree with you about the sliders and cardio. They are good for strength but I don't think I would want to try to do cardio work with them. For me, that would be an injury waiting to happen.

Valerie-I'm glad you had a safe trip. I'm sorry that the transportation app wasn't any good. We've had issues with those apps when travelling out of state. There are a lot of aggressive drivers in this area. We avoid the freeways as much as we can. Great job with the long hike today.

Hi to Diane Sue

No workout today. My appointment went better than last time. I just have to wait for results. I changed my Wednesday appointment because my husband is off and we have some things to get done. I did not really want to do the hour drive in the rain anyway. I am reading up on meds and options before I go in. I will get in a workout tomorrow.
It is getting late so I will come back and post tomorrow.

Arms and Abs on the Ball this morning. It's a very good workout. My traps have been really tight, so I did some foam rolling after and I'll continue to hand massage the area. At least it's not as knotted as it was yesterday. Mother Nature is not listening to me and it has been snowing big flakes, while being above freezing, and briefly staying on the ground. Yet in a couple days, it's going to be around 60 again. I've been working on getting rid of as much stuff as I can, and yesterday after chatting with Aliah I pulled out a big Ikea bags worth of kitchen stuff to give her. She's moving into the place they'll be living immediately. Win/win. She gets free stuff, and I get rid of more unwanted things. Now I need to pick my next area.

Valerie glad you got in a great hike yesterday. Overall, especially in lower Michigan we had a mild winter and the deer herds are gonna be big this year. Translating to a lot more car/deer interactions. So, cool how many animals you see.

Judy great job with the Peloton ride, core and PHA Supersets. Sounds like the weather will be much improved in a couple days.

Carolyn nice job with Low Impact Circuit.

Diane Sue I'm glad your appointment went smoothly.

Diane sue hope the mamm works out ok. always a stress producer until you get results.

what weve found is some states have good traffic aps, some have crummy ones, and they upgrade and change so its best to get one shortly before travel so you can play with it a little. they all work the same but different, like apps do. had good luck with idaho and montana apps, simple and give you what you need for big scale travel. why WA has such a worthless system is beyond me. we used to have one that worked ok, plus the state patrol posted on twitter by location. it provided timely information like the interstate being closed due to a wildfire so you could figure out an alternate if there was one. we have a road atlas for most areas we travel in. the WSDOT site needs to constantly be reset for everything you want included. it works Ok in the metro area where things change very rapidly. the rest of the state is an afterthought. even the interstate mountain pass where we just got misleading information. it does not include road condition reports. why the hell not? thats crazy. the problem areas always are areas without cameras! I checked the closest cameras but they showed no traffic. that could mean opposite things. a closure blocking all traffic, or the camera got an image without no one in it at the moment. its 6 am, could be either.

this was a heavy snow year here. sometimes here at the end of march we could hike high already, 7000-8000 feet because snow was patchy and you could avoid it. yesterday it was solid snow down at the 5300 foot level and deeper higher. walking thru it to eat is very hard for every grazing animal. we saw a lot of winter kill already. all the animals... loads of them... were all on the fringes of the park where snow cover was mostly gone. some spots dont get much.

Today I did XTrain Chest, Back, and Shoulders. That was 54 minutes and 267 calories burned. My average heart rate was 118 and maximum heart rate was153.

Valerie, great hike yesterday and how fortunate you are to see so much wildlife in their natural habitat.

Judy, great job with the Peloton ride, PHA Supersets, and Peloton core. I feel the same way about cardio on the gliding discs, an injury waiting to happen.

Diane Sue, I‘m glad that your appointment went well.

Cathy, great job with Arms and Abs on the Ball. That’s wonderful that you can help Aliah out and get some decluttering done at the same time.

Today I did CDorner Cardio to the Beat Disco Low Impact, 21 minutes, heart rate 136/158, 2257 steps. I followed with Carolyn, Girvan 20 minute biceps and 10 minute Triceps workouts, 35 minutes, 111 calories, heart rate 105/132, 494 steps. I have been viewing her stuff and it is much better knowing the moves ahead of time that she has that I had not seen before. I wrote them down before starting. I finished off with CDorner Neck and Shoulder Stretch that she did recently and a few minutes of rolling like she does on her total foam roller for upper, 26 minutes, 23 calories. Total time was 81 minutes, 254 calories, 2,850 steps.
I need to build more muscle and strength. My Withings app says I am underweight and my muscle has gone back down. I am trying, but think my love of cardio gets in the way.

AT&T finally came out and buried their lines that have been hanging over the fence most of the time we have lived here. They had hooked up a house behind us and left a second wire. I talked to the guy and he said he just sent out a work order for the contractor to come back out and bury the lines. The box has been leaning sideways the whole time with the bottom of it open to the elements. They came out with a shovel so I am sure my rock and planter has another mess in it.

Cathy, your car hunting and zoo trip after no sleep sounds like real fun LOL I do not like looking at cars. My only interest would be if it was for me because if I left it up to my husband, I might get a tank or something big. He is not fond of my little car. I like it because it is good on gas mileage and easy to fit in parking spots with plenty of room. I once got to park near the front of Walmart where they had shoveled up piles of snow because my car fit right in the tiny opening left. I have problems with knots in my traps and work on them all of the time. Why they have to get so knotted up and tight is beyond me. Nice work with Arms and Abs on the ball. I keep hoping to get a better pattern for sleeping and waking as I get so much more accomplished when I get up earlier. I hope you can keep it up. It is wet and cold here. I am not complaining because we had a drought last year. I appreciate it even though I do not want to go out in the rain.

Carolyn, nice work with Low Impact Circuit cardio only and Jessica Smith's 15 minute calorie burst yesterday and X Train Chest, Back and Shoulders today.

Judy, good work on the Peloton ride yesterday and today's PHA Supersets and Peloton Core workout.

Valerie, you would think if they had travel apps for roads that they would be constantly updated. Unstable hard snow patches could really be a hazard if you find yourself dropping through a hole. I have the Cathe gliders with the fabric covers which is what I use if I choose to go out into the hall. I miss my last two big workout rooms where I had plenty of space to have mats for cardio and a carpet area big enough for glider exercises. I used to do Cathe's slide and glide workout, but always kind of dreaded some of it. I prefer them for strength work as long as it is done slowly.

DH is out today for an appointment and work site visit, so I worked out upstairs. This would actually be my preferred space. Well actually I'm eyeing Derek's room down the road. It's the bigger bedroom, two closets and I could store my workout stuff in them. But, that's a couple years away.

I did Leg Strength-Stamina today. Second time I've done it, and I really like this one. Cardio leg drills, and weight work. 10-15's and a step bench on however many risers you can do. Bright sunshiny day here and with DH gone, I can get stuff done that's easier when he's not here. LOL

Valerie there's definite glitches with the MIDrive app. It always works fine on my iPad, which is no help to me at all once I'm driving, but sometimes it just stops working on my phone. And no matter what method I try to get it back it will never reload. Usually after a week or so it works again, but this time it's been a couple months. They stopped having an app a couple years ago and it's web based now. I found an app called Michigan Traveler that doesn't show speeds, but it does show other things including cameras, construction and accidents. It's really too bad the animals had such a hard time over the winter.

Carolyn nice job with XTrain Chest, Back, and Shoulders.

Diane Sue great job with Cardio to the Beat Disco Low Impact, Biceps, Triceps and stretch. It's been forever since I've done the entire Slide and Glide workout. I generally just do the cardio and yeah some of it is not fun! Hopefully AT&T didn't wreak too much havoc in your yard. Such a pain for you to have to deal with so much.

Using the computer to do this, and finding I can use it without my glasses. I rarely use it, since DH sits at his computer next to it all day and it's the only thing he has to use for personal things. It's nice though because he does everything through Chrome and I use Safari, so we each have our own set of bookmarks.

Hi Judy!

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout one. That was 26 minutes and 193 calories burned. My average heart rate was 133 and maximum heart rate was 149. This was the day for my WW meeting.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner To the Beat Low Impact, C Girvan Biceps and Triceps, and CDorner Neck and Shoulder stretch. Cardio workouts are usually a lot more fun than strength training so I can understand them taking up more of your workout time. I’m glad that AT&T finally buried their cables. That’s a long time to wait.

Cathy, good job with Leg Strength and Stamina. It’s nice to be able to spread work in your preferred area.

we xc skied today. conditions are marginal now with snow, ok only where it has been pounded down and not solid in other areas, cant step off the pounded areas or you sink up to your hips. 4 hours round trip

cathy it was a heavy snow year here and most animals have moved out of the snow zone to lower areas along the edge or outside the park. still we are seeing a lot of winter kill. still a lot of snow left tho it got up to 60 today. I am absolutely whipped.

IMO traffic apps in WA have turned mostly to the metro areas where its just a mess all the time. they dont spend much energy or resources keeping track of areas outside that even if its interstate hwy. ID and MT are more rural so thats not the case there.

Yesterday I did a 45 minute Peloton ride and today I did Live PHA Supersets #2 and 45 minutes of Yin Yoga.

Cathy-Great job with Arms and Abs on the Ball and Leg Strength-Stamina. It's crazy that it was snowing yesterday. At least it was nice and sunny today and I'm sure it will be warmer next week.

Carolyn-Great job with XTrain Chest, Back, and Shoulders and Cardio Quick Fix, workout one.

Valerie-Great job xc skiing. That sounds very challenging.

Diane Sue-Great job with the CDorner and Carolyn Girvan workouts. I have the same issue, I love cardio and would almost always choose it over other workouts but I really need to focus on muscle mass. I've been trying to keep my cardio workouts no longer than 45 minutes. I need to lift heavier too but my shoulder issues have been limiting me lately.

in western WA where we spent a lot of time on snow, the snowpack is denser, more compressed as the season progresses. in eastern, it's different. the surface freezes hard at night so you can maybe walk on it, but as the day warms up, it turns into a breakable crust. you break thru abruptly sinking up to your knees or hips. snowshoes or skis help very little and might make it harder because you need to pull the whole thing out of snow. if snowmobiles or lots of skiers have pounded an area down, it might be skiable in spring, but a lot of places it's impossible to go far. it is exhausting! sinking in and extricating yourself every few steps. if one foot or both sink in, when you use your arms to (try) push your way out, they sink in too. its comical almost, but if you went out a long distance early in the morning, it might be impossible to get back later in the day. you have to wait until night when it refreezes. most of the animals know this and avoid crossing snow areas if there is a snow- free way. Im sure people who do snow travel in the mountains in spring learn this. the western WA kind of snow ( cascade concrete) has its good side.

cathy I use the iphone for traffic and maps. we did not get the electronic package for the subaru. we're old school and use maps/atlases supplemented by the phone app. apps are best in cities and tend to get less accurate as you get out in the hinterlands.
