Pentagenarians & Beyond W/B 3/8

Hi Ladies,

Not feeling bootcamp today, I will be going to a spin class instead. My MIL is now in hospice and is only a mater of days now. She can no longer swallow, so that means that her brain is shutting down. She has Alzheimer's and has been in a long term facility for the last 6 years.

Valerie and Judy, I have tried the Quest bars and I like a couple of the flavors, but I still prefer the Bonk Breakers. My favorite flavors are peanut butter banana, fig (tastes like a fig newton to me) and the apple pie. When I ride I carry two tubes at all times and replaced my tires with gator skins and have not had any flats since.

I will be back later, I need to get ready for spin class.

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Dancin' Abs (58:00).

So spring-like yesterday and today--in the 40s. I will not get my hopes up, though, because we have had blizzards in April too.

I will look around for some of these bars. I don't eat them, but DH is always looking for something to give him energy in mid-afternoon.

Sounds like the PT is going well for everyone. I had a lot of personal attention for my shoulder and the therapist was very nice, but since it really wasn't a frozen shoulder, it didn't seem to help at all.

Deb, that's a strange way to protest dog shows if the intention is benign. I noticed in my AARP Bulletin that they recommend a British series called The Hour that's free on Amazon Prime. I may take a look.

Off to get some highlights this afternoon, or as DH says, "blondied up."

Josie, DH & I both carry a tube. this last ride was a wake up call. tubes can be gone fast! we don't want to carry an extra tire. We were "stuck" miles from our car with 2 people who didn't know the route, and DH's bike not rideable. we had 3 smart phones between us but in the bright sunshine ( not complaining about that, really) you can't see the map functions. we could have used our last tube but chose not to because the route to the car was only 3 miles. not far unless (like DH) you are pushing a reluctant bike and wearing cycle shoes. I will look into gator skins. I know there are some solid rubber tires that don't go flat but I think they're heavy. also some kevlar ones. Time to research a bit. also will have a print map for friends.

Lynda did they make you wait 3 months for a second injection? just curious, doesn't sound like his policy is flexible. I have complete ROM, and does not look like I've lost any muscle mass. do you remember how you got back into cathe level workouts?

Good evening ladies!

Everyone was chatting today! Today the ladies and I did a LS three mile walk. That was it for me today as last night's workout left me a little tired.

Deb...I would love to hear the tape. Since I went through menopause I feel the weight is just creeping up on me. Please use the yahoo email address. That's how I felt tonight. Tired and just wasn't feeling like a workout.

Judy...great that you can still workout. Seems like you are still being careful so that is good.

Josie....I am so sorry to hear about your MIL. May her passing be a peaceful one. Alzheimer's is so so sad. My cousin recenlty died of it a month ago. He was 65. Too young.

Lynda...it has been so nice here the past couple of days. Lots of melting going on. I remember not to long ago having a horrible snow storm on April 1st so you are right to not get your hopes up!

Hi to Valerie!

Good morning,

I did end up doing a R/W/HIIT workout yesterday. No workout yet, today, I may have to do a treadmill workout, I banged my hand when intervening in a dog squabble yesterday. My index finger is really sore, I can't bend it at all. No way I could hold on to a weight.

Judy, we do the same thing, we do a 50/50 mix of decafe and café coffee. I also use STOK , a caffeine shot, if I am not able to have a cup of coffee before a workout. The PT stretches sound like good ones.

Valerie, I think cutting back on the caffeine for you DH is a good place to start.

Josie, so sorry about your MIL. Is she far away from you?

Lynda, I added that TV show to my Amazon watch list. Will start it soon. Thanks for the recommendation!

Lori, good job with your "ladies". I will e-mail the webcast link, along with 2 PDF documents that the gave out. It was pretty interesting. Now if I can take the information and actually apply the tips I would be happy. :)

Take care,

Good morning...

I somehow passed right over your mention of your MIL Josie. so sad and harder on everyone than a stroke or heart attack, not that one has any choice about it.

I did a spin pre mix yesterday, then 1 hr therapy. I did more exercise at this session and am OK'd to do more at home although still nothing really strenuous. and guess what?? ...I'm following orders this time. I am a little sore this morning but feels like slightly sore muscles and that's OK.
DH has a couple small sips of my full caffeine latte. I want "my coffee" so I watch him like a hawk..no way is he slurping down more than he should! he makes a decaf one later. decaf coffee still has some caffeine in it, though I'm not sure how much and it probably varies with the processor. no headache since he stopped caffeine. must be about 12 days now. he started a different rx of his bp meds at the same time , so we will never be sure where the problem was exactly. after a while I KNOW he will start a little caffeine in his coffee and see what happens. he has been drinking some for years with quantity limits. I finally found a kale salad I like. sure enough ...it has soy sauce in it so he won't eat any. If anyone is interested I'll post. very simple & tasty.

Judy I've read than many people don't metabolize caffeine well as they get older. I drink way less than I used to.

grocery shopping today. I'll see what I can find in Quest & Kind bars. It sounds like Bonk Breakers are available thru cycle shops. REI has them but that's a ways to drive, not today. I'm not sure I can sell him on anything but chocolate. He gets something he likes and that's what he wants..... over and over. Is this a male thing? I get tired of the same flavor and mix it up constantly. is this a female thing? ... just trying to be fair here.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flex Train (56:36).

Sorry about your MIL, Josie. How old is she and when did the Alzheimer's begin?

Deb, I would like to hear the tape as well. I think you have my email. So K & K were squabbling?

Valerie, I think the shoulder started bothering me in late May a couple years ago when I was trying to finish an STS cycle. I stopped trying to get a heavy barbell over my head, because that is what really seemed to irritate my shoulder, but I did finish the rotation with heavy dumbbells (and then I sold STS, vowing never to do it again both because of the injury and because I was bored to death with meso 3 and all the equipment for the whole thing). I continued to do lighter weight workouts, and didn't see a doctor until July after a full week of no shoulder workouts because I was at the beach. He gave me a cortisone shot and then told me to start PT for a frozen shoulder (which I did not, in fact, have). It felt pretty good for awhile so I did light weights when I was working out for my shoulders, did no pushups because they really bothered me, and I did 3 weeks of PT, went back to see the doctor the end of August, when the pain at night especially returned. He ordered an MRI, saw that it was tendonitis, gave me a second cortisone shot and told me to take a couple weeks off of any weights. By mid-September I was back to my usual workouts with no pain, although I didn't start doing heavier shoulder work until October. So I guess it was a 3-4 month process. The ache during the day would come and go, but at night it would keep me awake as a persistent dull pain. It's a male thing. DH has the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day and has for years. I like a more varied diet, and I'm famous for "I'd like a little of this and a little of that." It was great at Rancho la Puerta where you could ask for both dinner entrees every night--one vegetarian, one fish. That's great if your DH has no migraines and continues to avoid the caffeine.

Lori, the real issue with menopause for me was the way my waist started to thicken. I have been pretty vigilant about keeping my weight down to a manageable level through portion control, but it's like your body wants to change shape as well--like play dough. Oh well--all I can do is try to keep everything in place through exercise.

Hi to Judy!

Good morning & Happy Friday,

I still cannot bend my finger, so no weight work yet. Hopefully in a couple of days it will be ok to lift a dumbbell.
Yes, it was a squabble between the dogs over a toy. They do this rarely, but it's the terrier in them that comes out once in a while.

Valerie, do you have a Cappuccino machine that makes your lattes? We have a small one but it's a pain to clean out and only makes one cup at a time. I could get hooked on those though. I agree, the older I got the more caffeine seemed to affect me.

Lynda, you are doing a great job with exercise, and I think you are the only one of us that has not complained about weight gain or done any specific diet/food changes.

Hi to Josie, Lori, & Judy,

Hair cut/color this morning, and agility class tonight. Hope to get some HouseMax done in between,

Anyone have any plans for the weekend?

Deb, we have an ancient Krups espresso maker. I didn't use it for many years. then lattes sounded good, I dragged it out and it morphed from there. it isn't bad to clean but "enough" so I won't make one after the other. it does one at a time. we tried several others (more expensive) and returned them because they didn't work well. I'm not wanting to spend $1500-$2000 on a fancy machine. we have another inexpensive machine as backup.

sorry about the finger.... icing might help. I'm surprised how much ice helps my shoulder. I had always thought ice immediately after an injury, then heat later, but ice is helping me a lot and this is certainly not "immediate" any more
My cousin and his wife had a fox terrier. he turned into a complete psycho. they spent a fortune on meds, training, and eventually had to put him down. he kept snarling and snapping at them, first one person, then both. it killed them but there was no other recourse. no one else would take him. he had to be heavily sedated just to get clipped.

Lynda we have an almost identical injury history. mine is a taking a little longer and maybe is worse because at first I kept thinking I could work thru it. Didn't happen! If I hadn't done the paddling a few weeks ago I'd probably be close to normal now.
at therapy I may progress to wall push ups next week. all of a sudden it is hurting less. it has been OK sleeping since the cortisone shot but that was the most disruptive ... dull ache in almost every position.
DH can eat peanut butter sandwiches beyond where I can't stand making them anymore.

I found Kind bars yesterday and got 2 with chocolate. did not see Quest or Break Bonkers. I didn't like Lara, Clif, Balance bars, or anything that says "protein".
Did major shopping yesterday, no workout. today we will road ride. also will call about all the minor parts that were supposed to come this week but haven't. this bathroom will take us til summer!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix (44:39).

Valerie, I kept working out too, thinking it was a minor issue and would just go away after awhile. I guess I waited about six weeks before finally seeing my orthopedist. DH is on his own for breakfast and lunch, making his own peanut butter and bacon on toast and pbj sandwiches at noon.

Deb, very interesting webinar. I think I have read/heard a lot of this, but it's very useful information. I really don't crave sweets or a lot of starch, so I guess I'm lucky. I do like spicy-hot stuff, and that did cause some trouble when I was having hot flashes.

We have a fund-raising dinner for Rural Lands on Sunday, but other than that, a quiet weekend. How about the rest of you? Any fun plans?

Good evening ladies!

Today at lunch we did 30 minutes barre and it was fun. The plan was to workout tonight but came home and no heat. So now we are waiting on a technician to come out. They will be here anywhere from now 7pm to midnight. Hoping it is ealier than later. Midnight is way past our bedtime!

Deb...hope your finger is feeling better soon. You were on such a roll with the RWH and I am sure you'll get right back into the swing of things.

Lynda...only plans I have is dinner at Mezcals with my DS and his GF. This will be fun night. My son absolutely does not touch any alcohol whatsoever...but his GF loves margaritas as much as I do so DS is always the designated driver for us when we go out. . Yes!!! That is exactly where the weight is going right in my waist! I have always have had a tiny waist and still do but I have this pouch that came from nowwhere!

Valerie...funny with the peanut butter sandwiches. Our machine is a cuisinart (sp) and we have had it forever. It pretty much just collects dust now.

Thinking of you Josie and sending hugs to you.

Hi to Judy!

We did our ride today, 26 miles, and got our missing and over looked sink parts. 2 washers that were not included in either sink we just bought., and guess what, does nto work without the second washers. I would hate to be a contractor these days. so incredibly sloppy and unforeseeable. I don't know how you could do a big construction project and never expect to see all the right parts in the box you paid for. waiting and waiting.
Lori hope you get heat tonight... that's what our wood stove is good for, when the power goes out or there's a furnace issue. but being a polar bear, I'd be happy anyway. I keep trying to get
DH to be more flexible on foods but we don't always like the same things. I'm like Lynda.... like it hot and spicy, and he wants bland. things I think are 'bland" he thinks are spicy so it is a bit of a trial sometimes because we come from such different baselines.

our weekend will consist of finally finishing installing the sinks now that we have washers, and maybe tilling in 15 bags of chicken manure we bought while out today. Paarty!!!

Hi Ladies,

My dear MIL died today at 5:00PM. She was 90 years old and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's approximately 10 years ago. My DH is doing ok so far, but I know it will hit him soon.

Josie

Good morning,

Josie, so sorry for your loss, 10 years is a long time to suffer with that dreaded disease, Keeping you and your family in my thoughts.

Valerie, glad those parts finally came and now you will be able to finish the project. Chicken manure....ummm...sounds like fun. Like Lori, our espresso machine is in some cabinet, like yours, collecting dust. Too much work for one cup of something. I would probably use it if it made at least 2 cups at a time without having to clean it in between

Lynda, glad you liked the webinar. The part about gargling kind of has me stumped!

Lori, LOL on "the pouch that came from nowhere"...there must be a huge inventory wherever they come from because lots of women get them after 40, me included. :). Hope your heat was restored!

Judy, how is the hip now?

Class today, then HouseMax for me.

Take care,

Good afternoon ladies!

Today I did Cathe Live Cardio Core and loved it. I'll have to say there are not many (if any) live workouts I do not like. The core portions are all standing core work with a couple new moves. Love standing core workouts! Heater is fine. Serviceman arrived around 9:30pm. For some reason the filter clogged. We have it cleaned every year so not sure what caused this.

Rainy here today which is better than snow! Been doing some housemax and then out for our mexican dinner tonight.

Deb....lol! Very funny about the large inventory of pouches!!!!! And I swear one day there was none then bam pouch! I have always hated core work but now I need to make peace with them. One of the reasons I like SB streaming and barre is becuase she incorporates a lot of core/planks in her routines. Hoping this will help the pouch to deflate! I have not listened to the webinar yet but plan too. Sounds very interesting.

Valerie...we have 2 fireplaces and a electic heater that looks like a woodstove. It is actually very nice. It is a vermont casting and really looks as natural as an electric one can be. It never got that cold so did not need them thank goodness.

Josie....thinking of you and your family.

Hi to Judy and Lynda!

Sinks are DONE! water is on and looking good. only the shower is left, waiting on a part, coming Tuesday at last information.

Josie...it seems with alzheimers, a lot of the grieving occurs before someone finally passes.

Too wet today to do the chicken manure... no rush on it. it is bagged but still stinky stuff to work with.

we're having a more typical wet weekend.
