Good morning all,

I did the lower body pre-mix with abs/core and stretch from High Reps. Got a little twinge in my lower back, hope it goes away.

The play was just ok for me, lots of history about the Czech revolution, which is DH's ancestry, so he loved it. It was 2 hours and 45 minutes, about an hour too long! LOL.

Valerie, good for you doing all those push ups on your toes! I really should be out in the yard doing some clean up. Not up to it right now.

Lots of HouseMax today, laundry, making spelt, etc etc. All the lovely things you do on a day off.

Take care,

Monday

Good morning,

I slept well except for getting up a couple of times, too much liquid I guess. I could have slept until 8 I bet. Just did not feel like doing a workout for some reason, now I wish I would have. Another "executive" dinner tonight, I hope I can sneak out early.

walk, then off to work,

Have a good day!

Still eating, sleeping and working. Dh pinched nerve in back and now he's home in bed. Now I have two people to wait on hand and foot. Just what I need right now. Joan Complain, complain.

Saturday was some kind of Yardmax record. we picked up a truckload of chick/cow compost. (composted manure/yard waste) can use it directly in the garden, not too 'hot" to burn plants. slightly stinky but nothing like "straight" manure. we shoveled it out( a dump truck would be nice here, but no.) and wheelbarrowed it all over our garden and planting beds. it made such a sticky mess of our truck that we got a 2nd load. didn't want to clean the truck twice! each load was about 1.2 tons. so we manually shoveled and moved approx 4500 pounds of "stuff". And, neither of us got sore! Tired, exhausted even, but no muscle soreness. I'm amazed. sunday we tilled and raked out the compost spreading as much as possible. *considerably* lighter work day.
weather was nice, 40-50 partly sunny. birds singing, spring is sprung. Needed to get done before we can plant things and it's easier to spread before the annual plants come up.

I'm down a pound. this is a slow process, but I'm eating reasonably well, and can live with this. Might go mt biking today if it clears off. If not, some other workout. cool and drizzle so far but nothing that unpleasant.

Deb, 2 hr 45 is a looooong time for one event. I'd be very antsy after 1.5 hours. just not very good at sitting in one place that long.

Rented The Social Network, disappointing. some snappy dialogue and lots of Harvard inside stuff that wasn't very interesting ( to us) .... zuckerberg has to be one of the most unsympathetic, unlikeable guys recreated on screen.... it's verbal sparring, he really doesn't "talk" in the traditional sense. so, in terms of acting , the actor ( eisenberg) did a good job. But I have little interest in fb and thought I might see some insights about it that I'd missed, but no. There was no one to like, really, in the movie. Jerks in all sizes, sexes, and shapes so, it was OK, but this was in serious running for Best Picture? made me think of the movie a few years ago with DD Lewis, where he was the oil baron but again, absolutely no one to like in the movie.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did xtend barre (55 min.), another new one. I would classify this as an intermediate barre workout, while Booty Barre is advanced. Not enough upper body work and I think it's actually shorter than 55 min. because she does an intro and a tutorial that I skipped. Nice variety of moves, though, and a keeper.

Had a great time in Boston. Since ds lives in Charlestown, we spent our first night there in a wonderful YMCA-hotel in the Charlestown shipyard. Our room had its own kitchen and was tax-free--so it was 115 dollars and really nice, clean, and quiet. We were right there, so we did the USS Constitution tour the following morning ("Old Ironsides"). What a beautiful boat, and we learned a lot about history. Our son had to work in the morning. We went out to Aquitaine the night before, and I had sole meuniere and a warm endive, apple, and walnut salad. My usual Manhattan. Excellent food and I only ate half, and gave the other half to ds to take home. The rest of Saturday we walked the "freedom road" through Boston. The best places were definitely the Bunker Hill museum and the Old North Church ("one if by land, two if by sea"). We must have walked 5 miles, although ds met up with us and we did have a break in the North End for absolutely terrific pizza. Had one large piece and diet coke. Spent Saturday night with sil, bil, and niece and nephew. She made an absolutely terrific meal, including Ina's lemon mousse for dessert. Unfortunately, we woke up the following morning to find that bil had such severe stomach pains that sil took him to the emergency room. We didn't know what it was until after we drove home, but I guessed correctly--gall bladder, and he had it removed laparoscopically and was coming home on Monday morning. Couldn't pick up Max until this morning, but he was ECSTATIC! OH JOY, OH HAPPINESS, WIGGLE, WIGGLE ETC. Overall, a great weekend, and a very nice break for me.

Gee, Deb, I hope you had an intermission on that play. Sounds like a yawner. Love your smilies.

Valerie, I totally agree on the Social Network. I couldn't figure out why it was so highly praised. I thought the writing by Sorkin was feeding stereotypes about Harvard preppies and nerds, and that poor Zuckerberg probably was nothing like the portrayal. I did like the music, though, and thought 9-inch nails Trent Ray??? deserved his Oscar.

Joan, go ahead and complain all you want.

So, two questions: What has been your best clothing purchase this past year? What has been your best beauty purchase? Mine: a faux fur leopard 3/4 coat that I get endless compliments on, that is really warm, and very light weight. Love it! Viviscal, which I have been taking for 6 weeks now. My hair suddenly has more body, has grown thicker, and just plain looks shinier.

I will now start grading papers.

Gotta get us back on page 1!

Did a mt bike ride yesterday, about 90 minutes. went to our favorite place but it was wetter there than anywhere else, in contrast to the forecast that should have made it drier. still fun, drizzling but things were muddier than usual. still fun, just have to hose everything off after, including us.

Lynda, I thought it was so ironic that Zuckerberg "invented" the network that supposedly brings people together and helps them communicate while he, at least in the movie... is depicted as someone who's unable to communicate at all. strange. maybe it's generational, but I don't find much useful about fb.

I've decided portion control is your secret weapon. I'd eat the whole piece of fish unless it was gigantic, and I cannot stop at one piece of pizza. and I'd have a big salad with the pizza....can't eat pizza without green salad... and a dark beer. so there you go, that's why I have trouble losing weight!

Off to yoga shortly.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Dancetonic, another new one, and did both 30 min. routines. Fumbled a bit on the choreo, so there's a learning curve on this one. When you tift on a new dvd, you can't remember the top well enough--or at least I cannot.

So it's supposed to be spring, right? Snowed yesterday and we are getting more tomorrow night into Thursday.

Valerie, I envy your ability to get out in the garden. We still have mounds of snirt covering our beds. Hope we get a Bermuda high and a big meltdown. At least it was sunny over the weekend in Boston. The freedom road, by the way, is inlaid red brick on the sidewalk, and red paint over the streets. You don't have to follow any directions in a guidebook--just follow the red brick road. I was also reminded of how much I like everything free, like in Washington, D.C. I guess we pay for it with our taxes, but if it's a national park or museum, it's free.

I'm doing two papers per day so that I have time to do some writing. Also makes the grading bearable.

Deb, you must have had another late night with an executive dinner.

Lynda, summers are not that warm here and generally dry so it's key to getting things in early in spring. we start many plants indoors and transplant outdoors as it warms up. cool weather crops do very well here, like broccoli, lettuce spinach peas. tomatoes and eggplant are a challenge and don't always produce at all. but we try!!

I'm been thinking about your questions about best clothing purchase. I'm divided on whether it was my new long sleeve ski shirt or new hiking boots. new bike jacket? It's pretty much all I bought this year. haven't bought any 'dress" clothing in years.

What is Viviscal? a vitamin /supplement?

too bad about bil... laparoscopic GB surgery is pretty simple. without the big abdominal incision it's a pretty simple procedure and recovery. Everyone in DH's family ended up getting theirs out except DH. He eats much better than the rest of his family, I keep fatty food to a very very minimal amount.

Doesn't look like Deb was able to sneak out early from the dinner. either than or she's doing a double workout today and ran out of time.

well Ok, I'll bump us back to page 1. Where is everyone? Deb, hope you're not having more computer problems. maybe you're still at dinner! Lynda, correcting more than 2 papers? Joan & Josie?

Did sts disk 5 and also my yoga class yesterday. today, a nice sunny warm day, it's cycle time. will try for our 35 miler but shorter will be ok if the seat feels too hard. maybe more garden work this afternoon.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Booty Barre (63 min.).

Where is everyone? Looks like it's just you and me, Valerie. Everyone else must be on Spring Break in Florida, boozing it up with my students. At least it's not snowing here.

Viviscal is some kind of supplement with a lot of fishy cartilage stuff in it. My hairdresser recommended it and it does seem to be working.

Back to work here.

Hi Ladies,

I have been sick since Friday evening. This cold snuck up on me and I could not even do my ride on the weekend. I just came back to work today and still have a runny nose and a cough, but I can taste my food now :)

I will be back tomorrow; I have a lot of work to catch up with.

Have a nice evening.

Josie

I'm here!!

I did get home late for me on Monday night, then this morning I had to go get blood drawn at 6:20 apt. It snowed and was very slippery when driving so it took me a lot longer than I thought. By the time I got home and ate something, it was time to go to work.

Garance, BEWARE if we are getting hit with it today, you may get it tomorrow. It's pretty ugly, like January, instead of March.

I will definitely be here in the am to catch up with everything going on.

Good morning,

Another long day today, work and then a haircut after. I need some time to relax! Anyway, I have to run, have to stop at the bank and get some cash or I will not be able to pay for the haircut!

Josie, hope you feel better,

Garance, you asked about purchases. I bought the Murad Resurgence 4 pc nightime step skin care system and am liking it a lot! I got it on Ebay for $45, including shipping. Clothes, I guess I really like a black suit I bought this fall, wear it a lot for business stuff, plus the pants are great on their own for more casual things. Love my iPod and Nook too!

Valerie, this one is for you>>>

Wow, DEb, I hope I look more "streamlined" when I'm doing my pushups! I'm on a diet to prevent looking like that little guy.

Josie, so sorry to hear you couldn't do the ride. I always get way sicker with headcolds than I should. Hope you're back to normal by now.

Did a bike ride yesterday, 25 miles in about 2 hours 15 min. a couple stops to adjust clothing and have a snack. the bike trail managers removed all the uneven ( not sure what they're called) gates that I hated. I never could ride around them though lots of people did. going around one last fall I took a nasty fall. made for a much smoother ride. gates were at intersections. still need to slow down because of vehicle traffic that may or may not stop. so glad they're gone.

Winter is not going to end this year, it will continue to snow! That's one of the great things about the NW, spring might be damp but it's otherwise nice. flowers blooming everywhere. and frogs croaking. a nice day like yesterday and all the frogs croak endlessly, a real pleasant sign of spring. it's a chorus.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Ellen Barrett's Cardio Fusion (46 min.). Love it!

Josie, hope you are feeling better soon. I hate colds.

Deb, we only had a dusting of snow last night. Sun is out and even though it's colder than it should be for this time of the year, I'll take it. I noticed over at videofitness.com that KCM's new workouts are expected to start shipping early April.

Just had lunch with a friend at a Vietnamese place. Noodle bowl that I thoroughly doused with hot sauce, Valerie. Bet you would have loved it.

Back to work!

I went out to lunch with DH and a couple former employees, and dumped the whole bowl of hot sauce on my tostado. a Thai noodle bowl would have been better but this was good too. if I don't get rice and refried beans I can keep the calories in line. I had 5 corn chips.

Making some kind of baked fish for dinner, maybe a baked sweet potato & salad. someone told me I look thinner today. my clothes are looser.
Did disk 6 this morning, and increased weight in a lot of places.

Can any of you recommend a good simple weight training program for an older woman who's a beginner? she walks on the treadmill and has no weight loss needed but has never done weights. it's the dreaded upper arm flap mainly. I think Cathe might be a little much for her. ideas?

I knew today would be a horribly wasted day so I played hooky for an hour and a half and went to the casino. I won an $8000.00 jackpot.

At 10:00am I took my mother to the emergency room and got home at 5pm. She hasn't been able to walk for 2 or 3 weeks (I don't even knowhow long) She has just gotten over a bad cold and I knew I would havetoforce her to go to the doctor. I felt that the hospital might be the best option because they could also do all the testing.

They did dozens of tests but the only thing they said to do was that we needed to get the swelling down in her legs. I wish someone would tell me how.

Then two hours of babysitting. I need to work but I think I will just go to bed.

Joan

Good morning!

It's Friday!!!
bigavatar_rev15.gif

Valerie, of course you look more streamlined! But you are a killer with those push ups! What about this one?
yoga20meditation.gif
This is the yoga princess! As for weight workouts, I think the beginner Cathe one should be ok. She can use light weights. Or check out collagevideo.com for beginner weight work.

Garance, yes, Kelley also posted on her site that the workouts were sent to the duplicator so it shouldn't be too long now.

Joan, you need a day of about 20 hours of sleep. Did they keep your Mom in the hospital? Is she on any medication for the swelling? My aunt has the same thing and she is on something that reduces water. It is a slow go though. Way to go on the winnings!!

A weekend full of dog activities, Keegan has more of a social life than we do. Agility class tonight, then again tomorrow morning, then we are hosting an obedience training seminar at our club all day Sunday, DH will be attending as a working team with Keegan, I wll be auditing.

what is everyone up to this weekend?

Take care,

Joan, I'm definitely not an expert here but usually the extra fluid gets removed with diuretic drugs, lasix ( furosemide)is one many people are familiar with. Dietary salt restriction too. there are many drugs, often combined with or included in blood pressure medicine. often in older people kidney function is not what it should be, and heart function may not be great either. so it's a balance of getting rid of as much extra fluid as possible without causing risk to kidney function. Is she wearing support hose? people don't like them but they help control lower extremity extra fluid.
If enough medicine is given to get rid of all the extra fluid, it can send her into kidney failure. my mother is in similar circumstances. we get labs done. adjust as best as is feasible.
Who's her primary care doctor? She should have an Internist.... (Internal Medicine) Most FP's are not too good at elder care.

Wow, congrats on the winnings. buy yourself something nice!

Deb, I thought of Collage. she & her DH are internet savvy so that may be a good enough suggestion. I have no idea how much work she's willing to do. Cathe might be overload! I know she's slim and walks on her treadmill regularly but is unhappy with upper arm droop.

Did the plan for dinner. kept thinking about a Thai noodle bowl but had baked fish, green salad, half a sweet potato.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Squeeze (56 min.).

Valerie, I suggest Collagevideo.com as well. She can even chat with someone online about recommendations. Glad you enjoyed your hot sauce! Nothing like a little fire for the palate.

Joan, that's quite a bonus for playing hooky! So how are you going to spend it? That's sad about your mom. Did you spend all that time in the emergency room? I bring a book with me everywhere, but I'm not sure I wouldn't lose patience if I had to sit in a waiting room that long. I've said it before, but it's worth saying again: you're a candidate for sainthood.

Deb, nothing happening this weekend. Just major Housemax because I did not clean last Saturday. I was sincerely hoping to do some outdoor work, but it's still freezing here. Spring does not want to come here. Have fun with little K!

Off to get some highlights in my hair this afternoon--or "blondied up" according to DH.
