Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/5

Today I did Turbo Barre. I wanted to see why I didn't like it before. I think it must be that it is too long. Next time I will do a shorter premix.

Deb, my garage isn't heated but we don't have many days where it's too cold to work out there.

I've never sold anything on Amazon, but I should try it. I didn't realize that it is so easy to do.

Enjoy your afternoon.

Today I did X10 mix 38 low impact and step, 39 minutes, 233 calories. I then did Kelly Coffey's Athletic Step 36 minute, 298 calories. I finished off with Susan Chung Rapid Fire Results abs and stretch, 15 minutes, 55 calories. Total time was 94 minutes, 646 calories. I kept fighting with my Fit Bit because it kept syncing with MFP and doubling workouts. I finally think I got it fixed. I kind of like My Net Diary for my workouts because I can just put in a type of workout and add the calories or save a custom workout like I do with MFP. I have started using both of them at the same time because I like My Net Diary's features a bit better. It is also easier at time to just click on Copy recent meal and see all of my meals of late in a list. Then I click on the meal that has foods I want to use and it will get me a list of the foods and I can check off which ones I want to add to my current meal. The graphs are nice on it. I like the food pictures as well. I can put in weight calories without putting it as a cardio workout as well.

I would think that those trade in items are some of the ones Amazon sells as refurbished items and they do usually have a used list.

Judy, my neck seems much better today. I was really worried about it. I have done both Ripped with Hiit Plyo workouts a lot. They are just not my go to workouts. The one with the step can be modified a bit with the leaping over the step. I use just the platform for that and sometimes I jump over and sometimes I land on and off the step.

Lori, that is quite a bit of snow. We are having record highs here. We have 80 in the forecast this weekend and then it drops back down again.
I think eventually I will just purchase the SB bounce workout. I would like more of her workouts to add to my collection. Enjoy the time to do a long workout :)

Valerie, I just figured quinoa was a grain because they are always referred to as ancient grains. I really do prefer eggs with something else. Eating them by themselves is kind of bland. Trying to use diet and nutrition programs is kind of a pain when you want to use recipes. I have started copying and pasting recipes that I find on line into MFP and working with that to get the calories. I have to edit though because the program comes up with some odd choices for some foods and I also change up recipes. Yesterday I made Tamale pie for the family dinner and I did use a little corn meal but instead of the wheat flour I used white rice flour and almond flour mixed together and I used honey instead of sugar, but not as much. I mixed my own taco seasoning to use in it instead of packaged. It became my own recipe by the time I was done with it. So, it took a bit of work getting it into MFP. It is nice when I find recipes like those from different popular healthy cookbooks already in MFP and that is why I like using it. I sometimes just put the different items though, particularly if I think that I am not go

Carolyn, I felt the same way about Turbo Barre. There is not much for shorter pre-mixes. I think it is a good workout but just too much time for that type of a workout.

Good afternoon all...

My husband has been outside for a couple of hours snowblowing and clearing the shed roof. We both feel we have surpassed 14 inches easily. With him going in and out GiGi slipped out the front door and was having a great time running from yard to yard. My husband yelled for me to alert me. I had just worked out so had capri leggings and my light hang around the house shoes. I was able to capture her but not with out effort! My husband said thank god you are in the shape you are otherwise she was gone!! Once I came in I realized my bare shins and feet were numb. The snow was higher than my knees. A miracle I caught up to her. She slowed down a bit when she came to a huge snow mound and I think she did not know what to do.

I did do SB's Upper Body but then went on to a powerjump premix. Finished up with a SB bounce to bring my HR down. 503 calories/61 mins.

Valerie...a rest day will do you good! Our office very rarely closes. But this was a ridiculous storm and it needed to. Most of our New England restaurants have closed too. Who the heck would go out to eat today?

Carolyn...as much as I love Barre I am not a fan of Turbo Barre. It has been a while since I jave done it so perhaps I should trynit out to see if my feelings have changed.

Diane Sue...some nice workouts this morning. I have not done a Susan Chung workout. I have a couple of her Kickboxing but never did them. They were giving to me and I put them in my someday pile. glad your neck is better! I think you would like the SB bounce. She has another woman in it that does advanced moves and boy you feel the burn!

Have a great afternoon all!

Here is our Snow Angel. Bob took this picture this morning when they when she was supervising him clearing the shed. We are guessing she is about 45 pounds now. You can't really tell by this picture. Everyone comments on how big her paws are!

Lori, that is a cute picture of Gigi in the snow. I am glad that you were able to catch her. You wonder what it is that drives some dogs just to keep going. It is funny how we can be so focused on what we are doing that we forget something like how cold it is. I bet it took you awhile to get dried out and warmed up. I spent a lot of time when Gertie was a pup trying to teach her to come when called. I used a 50 foot leash and we would practice. I would let it go, but it being long it was easier to step on to stop her if she decided to take off the other way. I did the same in the house with a shorter 15 foot training leash that I could stop her if she didn't obey. They were for off leash training that came with my dvd set that I mentioned. I have all 4 of Susan Chung's Rapid Fire workouts. I like them. They all have some different moves and a bit different type of kickboxing workout. One has a good heavy bag workout on it. Some have weight sections in them and a lot of the ab workouts have standing and floor and use weights or medicine balls. There are premixes that are nice. She also has some good stretches on the end of them.

Diane Sue and Judy...I came across the perfect solution for the apple watch and wearing boxing gloves. At best buy they sell a bicep strap for your apple watch. Looks easy enough to switch from your wrist straps to this. Suppose to get accurate HR as if you were wearing on your wrist. It was $29 which I thought was a bit pricey but I really need something exactly like this so I bought it. If it does not live up to my expectations it is going back! Will let you both know.

Diane Sue-I just looked up Susan Chung's workouts and ordered 3 of the RapidFire dvds. The 2Lazy4thegym blog gave them great reviews and I really liked the clips that I saw.

Lori-The bicep strap sounds like a great idea! I can't wait to see how you like it.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, but an interesting thing...I had a call from a Special Agent to go do an interview about a guy I used to work with that is applying for a government job that needs a high security clearance. I went and it was pretty intense. They wouldn't tell me what he was applying for.

Diane Sue, I didn't realize you did day care. Did your daughter take it over? How is your neck? I like the feature on MFP that lets you copy a previous meal, as I tend to eat the same things frequently.

Judy, we didn't get a lot of snow but the temps have been in the teens all week, and with wind, it is horrible out there. Good to give your upper body a rest, then start back slowly with weights. I was reading a little about the Amazon Trade In program, and it almost seems like people can post in for things that that "want"...it said something like if there is no one that wants your item as this time keep checking back...or something like that.

Lori, wow, that is a lot of snow! Glad you got Gigi back, but you must have been frozen! She is adorable! :). I could not keep my dogs in my workout room while working out...they are little "investigators" and would ignore me but try to get into everything around them.

Valerie, I'm not one for plain eggs either, love them with toast though! I can't imagine shoveling a long steep driveway.

Carolyn, agree on Turbo Barre, way too long and even the "shorter" premixes are too long.

Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Deb, I bet that interview was intense. Was it very long? I did home daycare years ago. I did it so long that I watched a lot of childRen till they went to school and before and after school. The vo tech next to our home at the time would sebd people to me. It allowed me to be home while my children were growing up. . It moved into my grandchildren being part of the crew and finally I just watched the grandchildren which was nice. I didn't have to deal with dhs anymore. When we moved away almost 3 years ago I stopped watching grandchildren full time. My daughter started her daycare 2 years ago and stopped teaching s o she could be home with her little ones. She does her daycare school days and has a planned curriculum. She even has waiting lists. She started homeschooling her now 8 year old. She has told me if I wanted to I could work with her and she could take in more children. I don't think I would want to do it though. Daycare requires very long days. It is not an 8 hour work day. It starts when the earliest to work parents bring them and the last pucks them up. Also some are bad about coming late and not minding paing the extra. My daughter is better at upholding her rules though. I was always a bit of a pushover.

I took yesterday off too although we were running around shopping all day so was not especially restful. when we got home it was after 4 and I had dinner to make. It worked out OK as I was still sort of all over achy. feel much better today.
Too funny Deb, I make different things all the time. I love to try new foods and combos. I always liked cooking and Dh is pretty open minded. I would not have married a 'meat and potatoes" only kind of guy! I like stronger flavors than he does. I have my own stash of hot sauces and red pepper flakes. I just tried something new called "jackfruit", a fruit from India. supposedly has a "meaty" texture and used for vegetarian main dishes. that was a failure. didn't like it at all. would not rule out trying it in a different dish but the first attempt tends to dominate your thoughts about something.
Diane sue grains and seeds often get categorized together. not sure, botanically speaking , what separates grains from seeds but quinoa is a seed as are sunflowers seeds, pepitas, sesames. I eat happily both.

wow Lori you got hammered. dogs are so much fun to watch their first times in snow.
Carolyn I did not like turbo barre. I have done a few barre workouts but I don't enjoy them. I have major problems getting my legs into those positions. I call them poses. I get sore but I don't enjoy the process. it made me think of yoga poses that are totally impossible for me. I like enough other things too much to waste energy on things I don't enjoy.

Hi Everyone,
Today I did JS 30 Minute Fat Blaster. I used 1# weighted gloves with this workout. I followed that with Barre Amped Barre Power Stretch.

Deb, I was interviewed by the FBI once for someone's background check. It was rather unnerving for me even though they were very courteous and straight forward.

Diane Sue, I have looked at Susan Chung's workouts in the past and thought that I would like to try them but did not order them. I looked again and like Judy, I ordered three. I can't wait to try them.

Valerie, as I mentioned before I was not a fan of barre workouts, but Turbo Barre was the only one that I had done. After trying Suzanne Bowen at the suggestion of the ladies here, I have changed my mind. I still don't care for Turbo Barre, but the SB workouts are different. She is very clear and explicit in her directions and she presents different levels that I can do without dread. I agree that you shouldn't spend time on things that you don't enjoy.

Enjoy the afternoon.

I love that we all enable eachother!! Lol! Guess I need to dig out the Susan Chung workouts I have and try them out.

Judy and Carolyn...which ones did you buy?

Lori-I bought RapidFire Results, Kick Box and Core Burn, and Rock Steady Rock Hard. I am looking forward to trying these. I also need to get back into Suzanne Bowen's workouts.

Today I had a lot of interruptions, but finally got through my workout. I did Ice Boot Camp circuit basic premix #6 main, blizzard, muscle meltdown biceps, and icy core #1, 84 minutes, 504 calories. I wanted to see how I felt about it over S&S boot camp since there was some thoughts on it. I think it is easier. I think that is because there is not the compound moves along with the upper and lower and it has you doing some ab work with each round. I went heavier than Cathe on lower body and for most upper moves when she gives a choice of weights I took the lower one. At first I was going to do just the lower mix, but I looked over the exercises and decided it was doable. I just did cardio when Cathe did the push ups. My daughter has been having a terrible time with AT&T and their internet. Her cell phone is not working and her passwords all get switched on her emails. I think they have probably been hacked. She was going to have me help contact AT&T or maybe come to my house and use my cell phone. Neither of us have a land line. She used her husbands cell phone to contact me. Finally she found an 800 number for at&t. She says they seem annoyed with her, but they need to fix it. Unfortunately she lives in the community we used to live in and there is no other choice for internet where she is at. At least not one that would decent. Otherwise I would have suggested they get a new internet provider. It probably won't help with her cell phone though. She can't get into her email accounts. The passwords change on her. My husband helped her get on it from his computer and set up a new password and it changed on her again. I think need to shut the whole thing down and start over. I am watching the 2 and 9 year old tonight. Their brother 16 is coming over too. Their parents wanted to go out before he leaves to do some work building in Haiti.

Lori, is their a specific side of the bicep that the watch has to be on? I have a large band on my Fit Bit Blaze and it will fit on the lower end of my biceps on the last link. I wear it at it's second to the tightest space most of the time on my wrist. Sometimes the tightest so it is really secure feeling. I will have to look at the strap. I have an armband for my galaxy phone. Maybe that could be rigged to hold the watch on. I will check it out.

Judy, the first workout that came out from Susan Chung was introduced here by Cathe herself if I remember right. I liked it so much that I purchased each one when they came out. I think that you will enjoy them.

Valerie, that is interesting on what is seeds and what is a grain. I think the thing that would make quinoa a bit different than seeds is that it cooks like rice or a grain, absorbing water. I guess chia seeds absorb water though. I guess it really doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I like it once in awhile. I do not eat a lot of seeds but I have them around for those once in awhile recipes that I want to use them in. My husband is the meat and potatoes guy. Not an adventurous eater. When I make him something that I would like with more spices, I cook it up remove his portion and then dump the stuff I want into it for myself or make two different dishes. That is why it is nice for me to have extra stuff in the freezer pre made for myself. There was a time when I just cooked for him and made myself a large salad that I would dump a can of salmon or tuna on top of. That got old though.

Carolyn, I did not like barre work so much in the past. Since Cathe came out with the chair work on some of her later workouts and my coming here to this group I have grown to like them. It is always nice to be an enabler :) I am thinking that now would be a good time to incorporate my Susan Chung workouts again. I used to do them all of the time and have always liked them. It is easy to get sidetracked by new workouts and forget some older favorites. I just happened to be looking through my dvd workout holder and spotted her workouts and thought I should pull them out. I tend to use the ones sitting out in the open instead of getting out my cases and going through them.

I have never heard of susan chung. I have so much Cathe stuff I don't even want to look. I feel guilty about not using what I already have.

did the mattress purchase. this morning. I hope it is comfortable. It was not that expensive really, but with all the new substances used these days, it's hard to tell what will work. everyone talks about 'cooling technology" so I am not the only one apparently who is unhappy with a too hot mattress we've had for years now.

will get in a workout later today, power went out this morning for a while upsetting the schedule..

I may try to figure out the difference between seeds and grains on a day I have more time. I wonder how nuts fit into the puzzle? or legumes? we always call peanuts "nuts" but they're legumes. DH has been reluctant to eat curry saying it gives him heartburn. I like curry but have complained before I can't get the smell out of my kitchen so I don't do it often. I like it a lot but I don't like to smell it for weeks.
Going through and sorting my recipe collection, I got motivated to make some things I'd forgotten about. My father was like that, only meat and potatoes, no spices and little seasoning. it was dismal. gray-brown food.

Valerie, I am always telling the family peanuts are not nuts. It is funny how they are categorized. I love curry, and yes, it stays in the air for a long time. My husband does not like the smell. He says it reminds him of when he was in Iraq and the cooks tried to put curry in everything including spaghetti. He would try to take over some of the cooking and I think they tried to hide the curry from the cooks. I love trying new recipes. I go through phases on flavors I want to eat. I don't really like cooking in the slow cooker because the smell hangs all day and by the time dinner time arrives I have lost my appetite for what is in the crock pot. It tastes good on another day though. It is convenient when the family all comes. I do disguise a few seasoning in the food. I use a bit of garlic and onion powder and my husband will eat season salt. No chunks of onions, tomatoes or anything like that is allowed in his food. He is choosy about pizza and spaghetti if the sauce has chunks in it. I on the other hand like the chunks and I like a chunky chili or soup.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I met my friend for breakfast. Maybe starting back tomorrow.

Diane Sue, The agent asked all kinds of questions about the guy, whether he associated with "foreign nationals"...where he travelled etc. He also asked me a lot of questions that were clearly to see if what my friend told them was true, like the reason he left his job with us and what he did when he worked there. It was only about 15-20 minutes. I can see where day care is a long day and tough. My SIL in Seattle owns a day care and has been doing it for years. She has now cut her hours and is thinking of retiring. That is scary about your daughter's email accounts etc. I had AT&T with my old phone, but switched to Verizon.

Valerie, that fruit sounds strange, I will have to Google it to see what it looks like.

Carolyn, where did you order the Susan Chung workouts? From Total Fitness DVD's? Yes, the agent was very nice and polite.

Agility class this morning, and HouseMax for me.

Take care,

The fruit is very big and spikey skinned. I tried a package of it already prepared as 'barbecue flavor'. I did not like the texture or the flavor so that will likely end there. I try new and odd fruits and vegies if they show up in the store. the barbecue flavor didn't "go" with it. I am not optimistic about using this again.
That is terrible about AT&T and passwords. Verizon has been our best choice here & the areas we travel to forever, so I never even consider switching. all our electronics are great until they don't work! I would drink a can of paint before I'd do daycare. that would be my worst nightmare right up there with being a kindergarten teacher or school bus driver. I hated babysitting when I was a teen. just can't stand dealing with children. no way. I never regretted for a second not having my own. funny because my father didn't like children and I think we annoyed him. he didn't like dealing with grandchildren. neither my sister or brother were very successful parents.

yep, curry is a lingering smell. I like it a lot but mostly reserve for restaurants . funny how we all develop our own food quirks. texture of liver, beef, pork, or hard cooked or undercooked eggs. smell of sauerkraut. smell of eggs. many times it's not the food itself, but the preparation. my grandmother made sauerkraut. I could smell it cooking from several doors away. dreaded it because our house would stink for days after. I couldn't think of eating anything stinky like that. same with smelly cheese. a can't stand the German food I was raised on. I thought I could use precooked curry sauce. add vegies, chick or tofu and heat, avoiding most of cooking smells. that failed the husband test too.
I have a crock pot but everything got done way faster than it said and seemed 'boiled". I can see how it would be nice in theory to set it up in the morning and come home at night to a hot dinner, but I never got it to work like that. plus you miss all the flavor from sautéing things to start.
I did a 40 min S&S spin premix last night.
