Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/5

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, was not a good day. I didn't go to class last night either. Hopefully today will be better.

Carolyn, you are doing great with the rotations, and good you have the patience to work on a Cathe step workout!

Valerie, I guess 3 months should be long enough to tell if you like a mattress, but I think most people don't pay attention and before you know it, the 3 months has passed. Do you have a snow blower for the driveway?

Diane Sue, good job on the workouts! Is rebounding ok to do at this point? I am sure you cleared with your doctor. Slip collars are dangerous....they "slip" off and on too easily. We use them when showing in agility so we can get the collar off and on quickly when entering and leaving the ring....that is why they are not good for walking a dog, especially one that is pulling etc.

Lori, that is great that you and Bob took the day off together. :). Did you ask your trainer about using a prong/pinch collar, just for walking on leash? Not for any other reason. We sometimes have to use these in classes, when a dog pulls the owner and won't walk well on leash. They don't choke the dog, like what you mentioned, but do a small squeeze when they pull. It usually works and then they start to walk without pulling. Eventually you can move back to a regular collar with the leash. We show the owners how to properly use them, and make sure they remove them when the dog is not on a walk. Valerie, mentions also below. We have had one of the mildest winters here as well.

Maybe a workout, and then class this morning with Kylee...

Take care,

No snow blower. doesn't snow here that often and the surface is gravel. we had one year that was awful, around 2010 or so, . I think a blower would only work on pavement. DH and I just use the manual method. no need for another workout. 3 months is a pretty long time. it seems like no urgency, and all of a sudden time is up. sorry you had another bad day. We used to use the pinch collar as an every day collar because it stayed in place, especially when in the mountains. so many people lose pets because they run off after something and get lost.

If you haven't already seen it, take 5 minutes to watch the SNL ( Melissa McCarthy) send up of sean spicer. it is hilarious! we watched it a couple times.

The bootcamp circuit didn't work well for me. too much time moving the step in and out of the way. workout itself was Ok but needs a lot of open space.

This morning I did Supersets. I have only done this workout one other time and that was 6 years ago. I didn't have a workout sheet for it and had to make one. It's a nice short workout with two rounds of set A exercises and two rounds of set B.

Deb, I have always followed a planned rotation for my workouts, either a Cathe rotation or some other. It keeps me from getting bored and helps to avoid an unbalanced fitness program.

I am looking for new recipes to try out, another way to avoid boredom. I don't like eating the same food every week. Last week I made a whole grain spaghetti with mushrooms and rosemary from Fine Cooking. It was delicious. Today I am going to try an avocado mayonnaise to use with lunch.

Enjoy your day.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday and this morning I did indoor rides, 90 minutes each. I've missed riding and just felt like taking a short break from weights. I changed my rotation for this week to be 3 days of riding, a total body workout (tomorrow), and 2 days of Horizontal Conditioning and core/ab work. I'm still having some issues with my right shoulder and I'm afraid that doing RWH probably wouldn't help.

Deb-I love the watch! I'm not sure what I will get with my Amazon money yet. The iPhone I traded in was an old one that I haven't used for over 2 years.I was really surprised to get almost $100 for it. I'm sorry that yesterday wasn't good :( I hope today is better.

Diane Sue-I do most of my workouts in the basement, where I have my weights and equipment. I have the spin bike in the living room and I usually do the walking type workouts in the living room too.

Valerie-I did the same thing with Cathe's Muscle Endurance workout. It was one of the first Cathe workouts I got. I started doing it 2-3 times a week and I felt like I got good results from that. Sometimes I think it's good to focus on one workout for a while, especially if it's a total body workout.

Lori-That's really good to know about being able to switch the orientation of the Apple Watch. I really want to get into RWH as I know it's a great program, but it definitely has a dread factor.

Carolyn-It really helps to follow a rotation. I know I wouldn't do as much strength work as I should if I didn't try to follow some kind of rotation or training plan.

This morning I did Party Rockin Step 2, 53 minutes, 385 calories. I wanted a cardio without any weights in it today. That is all that I had time for before my appointment. I really wanted to do some stretching and yoga.
I have a prong collar that I used on Mudd. I have not tried that one with Gertie. When I was training Gertie as a pup I used a collar that has pointy links and is a hard plastic that worked well. I had the hands free leads. I worked a lot with her in our large backyard at the time and took her to the park around the block from us. I got these in a set with Don Sullivan's (The Dog Father) training dvd. They sell the different items on Amazon. It was a helpful training tool since she was so aggressive with Mudd at the time.

Deb, when I bounced on the rebounder it was literally a light bounce not heavy jumping. I am working into things a bit at a time. I hope that today is a better day for you. I was quickly disenchanted with the slip collar. Someone had recommended it to a friend whose dog literally face planted her on the pavement. I thought I would try it. I am just glad I was outside with my husband and grandson flying a kite. She didn't run off or anything and there is no traffic in our circle but I can see them not being good fro heavy pullers at all.

Valerie, I would not think that a snow blower would work unless the snow was the powder variety. I saw a video of some guy using a folding table to scoop his drive and walkway. I showed it to my husband and said that wouldn't work if it is icy and packed underneath. WE never have enough times with that much snow to really need a blower or extra items. The gravel would be harder to clear. Our longest drive was part asphalt and part concrete which was up near the house and garage.

Carolyn, I know I had a link to someones site that loads of workout sheets for different instructors. She had all of Cathe's older workouts. So, I have copies and I save one to just copy off with my printer when I want to do it. It does make it easier. I recently realized that Kelly Coffey has worksheets for her workouts on her site. I didn't know they were there. I like trying new recipes. When the family comes on Wednesdays they often become somewhat of my trial tasters. Particularly since I am always changing recipes and making them my own.

Judy, I have been lucky that our last two homes have had a large space for my workouts. My workout space is upstairs and covers the expanse of the garage on the lower level. I could see not wanting too many large pieces of equipment in your living room. Bouncing might be hard if your basement ceiling is low. I had not thought about checking into trading things in at Amazon.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was SB Strong Back. This is a favorite of mine. I then followed up with her Upper Body Bounce. Time was only 30 minutes and 166 cal. I then took GiGi or I should say she took me for a 2 mile walk this morning. My shins are killing me! Need to get used to the fast pace walking up and down hills. I need better walking shoes for the winter. What I have is not working and this is part of why I am sore. I have great summer walking shoes but need to buy something decent for winter.

Thanks for all the options with collars. I mentioned them to my husband and we will have a conversation with our trainer.

Deb...hope you are feeling better by the time you read this. Our winter has been mild but we are in the middle of a storm right now. Took me over an hour and a half to get home. Was very slow going. Warmer tomorrow then more snow of Thursday.

Valerie...Thanks for the reminder about the SNL clip. I have heard it is hysterical. Will watch it after I finish up here. Been so long that I have done the Bootcamp one I can't remember if I liked it or not!

Diane Sue...I am loving SB's bounce workouts and enjoy the slower pace from the power jumps. Balances things out for me. Nice job with PR2. Funny how many years ago when I first discovered Cathe it was thru her step workouts. Now I have no desire. Nice KCM has her weight sheets on her site. Good to know.

Carolyn...yes I agree you do a great job with the rotations. I have never done one of her monthly rotations.

Judy...I used to workout in my living room until my son moved out. I then quickly took over the basement. We used to have equipment all over the house. It is nice to have it in one spot. I have traded a few things on Amazon. They make it so easy to do. Happy Spending!!!!

Have a great night!!!!

Lori, I am sure with the regular walks that eventually you will have Gigi walking with you instead of pulling you along. Gertie gets better when we do it more often. But then when we don't go out for awhile she is crazy when we do for awhile. I have not done it with all of this other stuff going on. She wasn't bad at the vet other than barking when someone else got out of the car. I don't like her to do that. I don't mind if strangers are approaching our house or behind our back fence which is street side, but when it is the next door neighbors or some animal I do. She doesn't let me know when family is coming in. It is funny how she just seems to know it is them. My grandson came to the door surprising me this afternoon to use our internet to study. Gertie just perked up and went to the door when he rang the bell.
I still love step. Step was my first love as a workout and second came kickboxing.

Lori nothing wrong with the Ice bootcamp, except the format is like trisets with every third one cardio. it is a lot of furniture moving to do the other two exercises, and then get the step back in place for the cardio. I don't have enough free space to make it convenient. will try some other ones instead.

Agree, talk to the trainer and see what collar he recommends. he knows Gigi and what he worked with her so far.

I did a S&S spin premix for about 40 min. it went pretty well. gets my HR up right away.

Good morning,

Our internet was down this morning, just came back up a little while ago. I think it was the wind or something. No workout yesterday, but I did feel better.

Valerie, yes, with gravel it is hard to use a snow blower. Do you like the ICE Bootcamp better than the new S&S one?

Carolyn, I haven't done Supersets in years either...I think all that A&B stuff confused me! I think I have the workout sheets in Excel for that...do you want me to send them to you? If so, PM your email address to me.

Judy, your rotation sounds perfect to help heal your shoulder. I didn't realize you could get money for trading in a phone, I thought you just had to put it towards a new phone. So you traded it in at Amazon?

Diane Sue, maybe you are thinking of Fit Fig? She had all the workout sheets on a site...but I think it's down now.

Lori, I think your walks with Gigi are now categorized as workouts!

Working this afternoon....

Take care,

Deb, I think I liked the S&S one better but only did it once. the ICE one was hard enough on the step since I'm still a klutz at step moves. used 2 risers. did not go to 3 like cathe.. mostly it's lack of open space. I can't do mat exercises if the step is there. One reason the spin bike works so well when I need a fast cardio session.... no equipment to shuffle.

Our snow is usually heavy wet , and nasty. we call it "cascade concrete". sometimes in the mountains it's dry and fluffy but now much in the lowlands. it breaks branches, gets slick and weighs a ton.

I'm still working my way thru my recipes... sorting, weeding out, recopying . I have a lot of stuff. a link to one I made last night. I haven't calculated the points on it yet. could not access WW yesterday for some reason. I expect it will be on the high side because of the quinoa. the fat is pretty generous as written but easy to trim back. (ETA 16!!) I put it over a very generous pile of spring mix salad greens. it was the whole meal with a half an orange on the side. I've made it before. it's different, a great combo of flavors and textures but nothing I'd have to do special shopping for. It's credited several places but I got it from Fitness mag so used their link.

Hi Everyone,
This morning I did RWH Plyo HiiT One. It felt similar to the floor and mat parts of Cardio Slam and I used some of those modifications when I needed them.

Valerie, I work out in the family room, but much of my equipment is in the garage. I use one side of the garage for the treadmill, spin bike, and weights. Fortunately I can use the mat and step at the same time if necessary. The recipe looks delicious. I don't always put my recipes in WW recipe builder. For that dish I would just track the individual components.

Deb, thanks for offering the workout sheets, but I made one already. I have them for all of my strength training workouts. I got some of them from someone on the forum, but I can't remember who made them.

Diane Sue, I love step workouts also but I don't do them as often as I did in the past because of my knees. Too much Step and I can feel it. Kickboxing is another favorite.

Hi to Lori, Judy, and Caitlin.

Today I did Strong and Sweaty Boot Camp mish mosh Extreme 2, 6 rnds + 2,3,&5. 62 minutes, 310 calories. I then did 21 Day Fix Extreme Yoga, 32 minutes, 71 calories. Total time 94 minutes, calories burned 481. Of course there was a few modifications here and lighter weights for some of the upper body moves on Boot Camp. I modified a bit on the yoga as well. I hurt my neck today doing the yoga. It probably would have been laughable if it didn't hurt so much. I was in the dancer pose in the yoga leaned over balancing and somehow when I was getting ready to come back up to standing I lost my balance and fell on my head. It hurt up my neck, shoulder and upper back. I did some yoga tune up for neck and shoulders and took some Excedrin which I hate taking. I felt like my neck was crackling and when I turn my head I feel it, so I know this is not going to be good for awhile. I do not know how I managed to lose my balance like that on such a simple move.
Today is Wednesday family dinner so I have some cooking to get done.

Valerie, space is sometimes a problem. My problem is when Gertie wants to come upstairs with her bone and stretch her long body out next to my step to gnaw on it. I throw her treats to try to get her to move. Sometimes I have to stop and toss her bone over to her mat and hope she gets the hint. I guess I could shut her out, but for some reason having her there is comforting. Although she was right in my face when I got up off the floor after the tumble. She kept wanting to sniff me. Maybe she was worried. That recipe sounds good. I like to make fried sweet potato with fried eggs and kale for a meal adding some garlic and onion. I have my red quinoa out thinking I need to make something with it. I don't eat a lot of grains, but once in awhile I do. I need to use it before it becomes stale.

Deb, yes it was Fit Fig. I did see another one that had some workout sheets, not like Fit Fig though, that I found through some of the Paleo sites. I don't know if I had bookmarked hers or not. She was into fitness and essential oils. I hope that you are better today.

Carolyn, I feel like Plyo Hiit one is easier than the RWH Plyo Hiit 2 with all of that leaping over the whole step bench. They are pretty tough workouts. Plyo Hiit 1 is easier to modify here and there. I don't have as much problem with step bothering my knees if I keep the step height to 1 riser or no risers. Two rises is okay but not so often.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I took it easy a bit. I started out with SB's Cardio Bounce & Barre & Step workout. It is only 14 minutes with the last 4 minutes being stretches. I then did SB's Barre Power Stretch 23 mins. Was just what I needed this morning.

Diane Sue...Chester was the same way...pulled me like a rag dog. Eventually he learned to walk with me instead of walking me! I know in time GiGi will get it too. Hope your neck is ok. That must have hurt. I was just doing the dancer pose this morning while doing SB's stretch. Been a while since I have done it funny that you mentioned it today. Not funny you fell though. It is a really great stretch and I can see how one could tumble over. :(. I have to be careful when power jumping when little Nilla is in the room. One day I was jumping and felt a thump then another thump. Well Nilla was under the trampoline and I think she just was confused as to what was hitting her. So glad it did not hurt her. She is not allowed in my workout area any more when I am bouncing.

Valerie...I can see how that would not be enjoyable moving everything around. I am fortunate to have my own space right now. We have a really nasty snow storm coming tomorrow. I have brought home plenty of work to keep me busy at home should we be snowed in. Estimates are coming in at 14 inches! Yikes.

Deb...glad you are feeling better. Same here I have not done Supersets in a while. I think she did a live version or am I thinking of another workout? I have been trading stuff on Amazon for a while now. Love they offer this. Yes my walks are certainly a workout!

Carolyn...I love kickboxing! I have not been consistent with it this past year due to my shoulder. It has been feeling great so slowly getting back to it. I use my heavy bag pretty much for all of Cathe's Live Kickboxing with little modifications. Her workouts seem to work well with the heavy bag.

Have a great night all!

Lorie, I tried a second time to do that SB 14 minute bounce step workout but even after I logged into her site I could not seem to get it. I thought that maybe she only had it free for a short time. The only thing I could get free is her workout schedule sheets. I still have that code to get a month free but I really do not like putting my credit card info out there too much. Poor Nilla. I could see my daughter's dog Muffin doing that trying to get as close as she could. Gertie gets excited when I am on the rebounder. She used to throw her toys on it while I was jumping, but has learned not to do it anymore. She just grabs a toy and bounces around the room. She has certain things that I do like that when working out that seems to make her turn playful.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, maybe a short KCM today. We'll see. I worked at the office yesterday, was tired when I got home. I don't know how I worked the hours I did before I retired.

Valerie, I like the S&S Bootcamp better too. I think 2 risers is too high for me so went down to 1 and liked it better. That recipe looks good, (all except for the egg which I think I would just leave off).

Judy, with all the stuff I do on Amazon, I have never seen this program!! That is awesome! I need to start looking around for things to trade in. What do they do with all the stuff they get?

Carolyn, great that you could use some of the Cardio Slam modifications on the R/WHITT Plyo...I think I sold that one on Ebay...LOL....anything with Plyo in the title has me running the other way. :) Is your garage heated?

Diane Sue, Ouch! that fall must have really hurt. I hope the yoga tune up helps. I bet Gertie was worried when you fell.

Lori, Gigi will eventually learn, but in the meantime, it's tough to keep up with her. Poor little Nilla...good idea to keep her out of the room while bouncing. I hope you don't get the snow that they predicted.

It's John's day off, but not sure what we are going to do. There is a little snow on the ground, but nothing to worry about. I can't believe its February and we really have not had a big snowstorm this winter. Fingers crossed we get through without one.

Take care,

I will do cardio today. Maybe abs as well. I think a different ab workout than Strong and Sweaty though. That last complex always has to be modified when I do it. Those push ups and arm and leg raises just do not work for me right now. I end up doing the touch the back and plank do plank jacks instead. Plus I am already tired of it. Fortunately my neck is good this morning. It was doing a lot of crackling when I would turn my head last night.

Deb, I often wonder where I got the energy when I did daycare and running around evenings and weekends with my own children, cleaning and shopping weekends. I would start 4:30 in the ,or morning with a workout and fall into bed at 11 or 12 at night. Now I think I would have a hard time doing that.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did another indoor ride instead of a weight workout. I feel like giving my upper body some time off has been good. I might try doing a workout with light weights today to see how it feels. It's very cold here and snowing this morning. We aren't supposed to get a lot of snow today, but the forecast has been wrong before.

Deb-I'm not sure what Amazon does with everything they get back from trade-ins. For the electronics, they are probably selling them as refurbished items. That would be great if you made it through this winter without a big snowstorm. We haven't had as bad a winter as I was expecting either.

Diane Sue-I'm sorry about your neck :( I hope it feels better today. I agree about Plyo Hiit 1 being easier than 2. I haven't even tried 2 yet, but watching the preview I can see how challenging it is. I have done 1 a few times and it's tough but doable for me.

Lori- I keep Chino & Shadow in the bedroom while I am spinning. It would be too dangerous to leave them out because they want to run up to the bike and "help" me. I'm sure if I had a rebounder I would have to do the same thing. They love to crawl under things. I never had to do that with Misty & Tiger, they would sit on the sofa or coffee table and watch me spin, they never came up close to the bike.

Valerie- I also like the S & S bootcamp better than the ICE one.

Hi to Carolyn & Caitlin!

Judy

Good morning ladies!

I plan to do a couple of SB upper body workouts. One is today's workout from rotation the other is a band workout that is really good. I am then going to do a power jump workout. Not sure which one yet. Our office is closed due to weather so I am off today which means a nice long workout. They are now predicting 14 inches. Ugh. Oh well, the winter has been somewhat mild. At least we are not driving in it.

Diane Sue...I don't blame you for not wanting to give out your CC number every time you try out a free trial on a website. These days you just never know. I will say though I have been very happy with her streaming workouts. I am into my 3 year. She makes it so affordable. I think $80 for a year or something like that. Workouts out to $6.66 a month. Pretty reasonable. But if you do not do barre as much as I do then it is not worth it. Not worth to sign up just for the bounce workouts.

Deb...I seem to be working more hours now than my husband. My have things changed. Another vote for S&S boot camp. I have only done it a couple of times though.

Judy...I think Amazon sells them off to another company at a profit then they are refurbished and sold off again to consumers. Not sure but sounds feasible. I do more high reps with light weights now and have been happy with the results. It will do you some good to go light for a bit. Haha I can picture the kitties helping you workout!

Have a great day all!

I didn't do much of a workout yesterday. I was tired and achy so I did a warm up routine, then core 1, then 30 knee push ups and called it a day. I haven't had a day off in a long time. Deb, the egg was good on top of the quinoa. I don't eat many eggs directly as "plain eggs", but I liked it. quinoa is a complete protein by itself . diane sue, quinoa is a seed and not a grain. I don't know the difference really, but different plant category. anyway, a smaller portion would be a good side dish with a plain piece of chicken or fish. it was pretty high in WW points.
Judy, I also was surprised to see the amazon trade-in function. I had no idea it existed. My kitty doesn't have much interest in watching my workouts unless he wants something like food or to go out.

Lori that makes so much sense to just have companies take a snow day. 90% of the problems come from everyone trying to get to work in snow and blocking up the highways and then being sent home in a couple hours because there is no work to do. if it weren't so congested, the plows could be efficient and get things cleaned up. we used to get up at 4 am to shovel our driveway so DH could go to the office, but most of his patients were old people. they'd cancel at the first word of "snow". he'd sit there with nothing to do, and come home by noon. they even insisted everyone show up when the power was out. no lights, no computer, no phones and no patients but they insisted everyone show up. crazy. Hope you don't get 14 inches!.

I may do S&S bootcamp later today to compare to Ice. I don't remember it but I have numbers written in so I did it at least once.

Carolyn I don't put recipes into WW unless I need nutritional data. this one had the numbers so I used those although I adjusted some ingredients downward. then if I have the name and points, it's easy the next time I make the dish. adding all the ingredients is a total PITA!
