Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/2

Good Morning Everyone,

I took a break from heavy weights after doing Pyramid Lower Body last Monday. I had been feeling pretty sore.
I did mostly Peloton rides last week. Friday I did KCM Build & Burn Lower Body Tabata and Kettlebell Kickbox Fusion. Yesterday I did 25 minutes of Peloton rides and a 10 minute arm toning workout.

Have a great day!

Judy

I didn't get as sore from yesterday as I expected but weather is pretty rough today, so getting a break. might do an upper body workout later. plan on doing wash, making soup, and relaxing. we usually take a rest day after the big drive day but didn't this time. so today is the day.

I have a friend here who would like to get into doing some upper body workouts. I suggested Cathe but that might be too much to start with. who else would you all recommend? KCM? I know there are lots of people but personal recommendations are more useful.

diane sue, yes, my family is a bunch of fatsos. they all ate way too much especially home baked goodies all the time, and no one did a lick of exercise. ever. I have tried my best NOT to be like them, and I'm not. but genetics are relentless and I recognize weight will not fall off me, that it will be a battle. I only gained a pound or two, but I cant let it slide. I would like to get to birthday #72 in 2 months at my college weight.

Valerie-Do you think your friend could do some of the LiTe workouts? The other instructor I would recommend would be Jessica Smith. She has free workouts on YouTube, in addition to DVDs. Here is one of her free ones:

Judy thank you. I will suggest this one also. I think she is stronger than she realizes ( she has horses and walks regularly uphill and down. . she might be able to jump into Cathe but I wanted to give a range of ideas in case I'm wrong.

Today is my rest day. I did a short Jane Adams Morning Energy practice for 18 minutes and 42 calories burned.

Judy, nice work with the Peloton rides and Build and Burn workout. It’s important to listen to your body. I did a lighter week last week since I felt like I needed a change.

Valerie, your friend might like ICE Chiseled Upper Body and Chiseled Lower Body Blast. She should realize from the beginning that she can start lighter than Cathe’s weights and build up to heavier. I agree with Judy on the Jessica Smith suggestion. She could try one or two of the free workouts to see if she likes Jessica.

Hello to Deb and Diane Sue. Have a great afternoon.

Hi.

Today I did Step Boss PHA3, time saver premix "last half only"...35 minutes, 204 calories. Sorry I have been mia....it's been a hectic week. John got sick, ended up at the doctors on Thursday. He actually called for his own appointment when I was at a class. I was shocked, but happy that he did. Since he was out of the country, and also has a nasty gash on his leg that he got while he was away, they wanted to see him asap. I wanted to go with him, so had to change my Urologist appointment to 2/13. I had my stress test on Friday, not happy with what went on. My BP was so high, before, during and after the test. I have had low blood pressure my whole life, not sure what was going on there. They now want to do another stress test...ugh...I am calling my PCP to see what he thinks.

Looks like everyone is doing well with keeping up with the workouts. :)

Valerie, Asian chicken salad, is that a cold salad or warmed up? I love Panera's Fuji Chicken Apple salad, and would like to find the recipe for the dressing they use. I really need to do something like WW, I am just afraid I would join, then not do it...

Diane Sue, I agree with you on the dog food....how can they want you to feed something where the first ingredient is a paper product???? I had Keegan on one of those for his bladder stone issue, and he went downhill when it comes to energy, his coat was dull, even his eyes were no longer bright. That is when I started making the dog's food. I could not give him that stuff any longer. Especially if she has stomach issues already! How overweight is she? We fed our first dog when I was a kid, a cheap canned food and cheap dog treats. She got table scraps too. Everyone is so confused with all the info out there about grain free foods. I think its what they substituted for the grains, peas, lentils etc that they are saying may cause the problem. There is a lot of mixed up info out there.

Carolyn, I need to look up Panera Copycat Fuji Apple Chicken salad! Thanks!

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

I did 30 min on the water rower, then did body weight and bands the whole thing. I have a really stiff band and it was very tough to do that many reps. not that many activity points for all of that.
Deb its an in-between salad. the lettuce is cold, I use spring mix, grilled chicken is sliced into narrow slices, while warm. I have other ingredients at room temp. its room temp with the warm chicken.
I would google the Panera recipe you want and look for copycat versions. you know what it tastes like, just compare to what you enjoy most. most similar. I've never eaten at Panera.

hope you both are OK. lots of stuff all at once. Do you have a home BP cuff? you can get ones to strap on yourself and to do your own BP. record at random times, bring in to the doctor with times and what home readings were. sometimes people get over stressed... called"white coat hypertension" and if you get home readings that are normal, it will put that to rest.

I am doing WW online. I watched for a good deal, maybe was offered because I've been a member before. 3 months will be about $25, not a lot. the phone app works vastly better than a year and a half ago. I'm tired of this 10 lbs that I have hanging around. I want to get down and stay there. the last few pounds are the hardest I'm told, and I believe it. very easy to get distracted. If I am paying for something, it motivates me to stick with it. Im too cheap to waste money. I do not want to go to meetings. nothing close by or convenient and I do better on my own.

Things are not going too well. weather is bad and so we think we will leave assuming we can get out Our driveway is not driveable so we need to hump everything up there on foot. Workout for the day. The road out may not be plowed but can’t see until we get up there.

Today I did IMAX 4 for 44 minutes with 332 calories burned. My average heart rate was 134 and maximum heart rate was 153.

Valerie, I hope you have safe travels.

Deb, I hope that you and your husband are okay. Your high blood pressure might have been due to the situation. I think that WW is a great program, but like anything, it requires some work. While meetings are not essential, people do better with the in person support. If you decide to do online only, be sure to read the program materials. It’s not just logging your foods which is where many online only members get it wrong.

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

This morning I did Raw Step 2, 41 minutes, 204 calories, heart rate 123/165, 4,031 steps. I also did Step Sync bonus intermediate step with the Step Sync stretch, 23 minutes, heart rate 108/145 , 2,372 steps. Total workout time 64 minutes, 311 calories, 6,403 steps. I have errands to run. Tomorrow they are saying we will have snow. I would have liked to have done weights, but have achy joints and don't want to push it yet. It is not muscles, it is toes, neck, knee, shoulders. Last weight workout was the short Total Body Raw strength last week. Funny, my Fit Bit gave me outdoor bike riding calories riding on the motorcycle with my husband yesterday. Beautiful weather in the low 70's yesterday. Tomorrow it is supposed to snow.
I went out and picked up some things at Sprouts and hit the bank. I want to try the beet and feta salad recipe I saved. I bought low fat feta and think I will cut the amount used a bit. It calls for 1/2 a cup. I also needed spinach for it. I have the balsamic vinegar and ingredients for the dressing.

Valerie, I hope you reach you goal for your birthday weight. Genetics give us a lot of things to have to fight I guess. That is too bad that weather has turned bad for you. I hope you can get out if you need to.

Judy, good workouts this last week. Good idea to take a break from the heavy weights. I think I may have overdid the weights last week with the two Box and Pump workouts and the Total Body Strength workout. I will see how I feel tomorrow before I decide what I will do.

Deb, I hope that you can figure out a way to get the blood pressure under control. I understand what Valerie is saying. I went to the dentist once and my blood pressure was up. They told me it was probably just being in the dentist office getting dental work done. I read somewhere that having your legs crossed can alter blood pressure because of the flow. I often sit at the doctors office with my legs crossed when I get my blood pressure done. Since then I have tried to remember not to cross my legs. So many things affect it though. Like Valerie says it might be good to have a blood pressure cuff to see when it goes up and maybe figure out what the cause might be if any. I have thought about getting one. I think Judy mentioned having one.
I don't think Gertie is that fat. I have a chart on checking the dogs body to see how much waistline there is. The vet said last time she was borderline overweight. He did not say how much this time. She weighed in at 80 lbs when she finally sat still on the scale. I think that would be about high end for a male. She is definitely not as big as my daughter's labs. She has a nice shiny coat and clear eyes. I hate to give her something that seems like junk with lots of vitamins and stuff added to it. It is the Royal Canin Satiety vet formula. I am, worried about changing to chicken dog food too. She has done well with the salmon, seafood formulas we have given her. The others never seemed to agree with her. I have generally used the ones with sweet potatoes or pumpkin as an ingredient. I did try the salmon Wellness weight management one that had peas last year, but switched when she was losing patches of hair. No problems this year. I have also avoided ones with garbonzo beans and lentils. I figured giving my dog that sort of thing would not be real good for digestion.

Carolyn, nice work on I Max 4. I enjoy that one although I think I like doing Step Sync more :)

Hi Everyone,

Today I did ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast with Muscle Meltdown Shoulders. I added on the Bonus Extension from KCM's Strong and Lean.

Deb- I hope you and John are doing ok. I agree with Valerie and Carolyn-your higher BP may have been due to the situation.

Valerie-I hope you are both ok too. It sounds like you are heading into some rough weather.

Diane Sue-Thanks! I think I over did it a little the past few weeks. Yes, we have a blood pressure monitor at home and it's been very helpful. Mine is almost always low but I have had a few higher readings when I was at the doctor's office or urgent care.

Carolyn-Great job with IMAX4!

We made it back without much trouble after hauling everything to the car a good quarter mile thru uphill and downhill snow. The snow collected in a totally different area than we’d seen before. Our snow fences worked fine but this was a section that never collected snow before. Great. wind direction was different from typical. We need to get a snowblower... or something. It was going to snow for three more days. Also the drive will be worse those days, and conditions not good for skiing.

Deb my BP is usually fine but if I get caught in bad traffic where I get stressed about getting to appt on time, it goes up. Taking home readings is more representative of what your BP is most of the time. my DH goes sky high at a medical office even on meds, but at home his readings are fine. I also can have issues with too much caffeine. just some thoughts.

This morning I did LiTE PHA 2 for 53 minutes and 266 calories burned. Average heart rate was 120 and maximum heart rate was 149.

Diane Sue, great job with Raw Step 2 and Step Sync Intermediate + Stretch. I think it’s easy to overdo it with weights when you are accustomed to working at a higher level.

Judy, great job with ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast, Muscle Meltdown Shoulders, and Strong and Lean bonus.

Valerie, it’s too bad that your vacation was cut short, but I’m glad that you had a safe trip home.

Hello to Deb. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Quick check in and I will come back in awhile. I just finished my workout and am kind of late since I was not much in the mood for a workout and had a hard time choosing. I did YouTube Jessica Smith Straight Up Strength Training and yes, on this one she did use 20# dumbbells along with 10#, 36 minutes actual (44 for writing the moves down) 604 steps, 96/136 heart rate, 100 calories. I also did a workout I had on Amazon Prime, Jessica Smith Cardio Abs, 26 minutes, heart rate 126/156, 138 calories, 2,448 steps. I have only done this once before and was not thrilled with it. I am still not. It is pretty much boxing with some kicks and impact although she makes suggestions for non impact. Just not a fun workout. I was glad it was short because it seemed long and I kept looking at my watch. Maybe it was partly my mood. I did like the weight workout though. I seriously thought about skipping a workout as I was sitting at the computer this morning wanting to fall asleep.
Total time was 70 minutes, 3052 steps, 238 calories. Doesn't seem like much for what I did.
Straight Up Step
all moves are done for 12 reps but she says you can stop at 10reps

repeat

This morning I did Step Sync Intermediate Bonus + Abs Stacker. That was 42 minutes and 293 calories burned. My average heart rate was 133 and maximum heart rate was 160.

Diane Sue, I really hate to start a workout only to find that it is boring. I have only done Jessica’s cardio workouts from YouTube.

Valerie, nice job on Stacked Sets Upper Body in addition to getting your shopping done. I did some food shopping today after my meeting. We have a forecast for really heavy rains and possible flooding starting tonight and I don’t want to go out.

Waving hello to Deb and Judy.

This morning I did Raw Kettlebells (44 min actual) 50 for writing and putting on my Gel hand wrap gloves, heart rate 113/173,169 calories, 1,279 steps. I also did Raw 5 day strength day 5 stretch, 36 minutes, 78/106 heart rate, 37 calories, 73 steps.

Hi all,

Had my second stress test w/ECHO today...I am not happy about all this. Apparently the results of the one I had last Friday resulted in a recommendation to have this one done. I have an appointment with my PCP on Tuesday. I made it because I want to go over all this in person, not on the phone with the nurse. Again my BP was very high even just walking in. I have used our home cuff periodically and it is high with that too. :(

Judy, good job on the Pyramid lower body work out and the Peloton rides. I was thinking the high BP could be all the stuff going on at the same time, and my worrying about them...my repeat bladder infection, John's trip, then his fall and the bad cold he get when he returned...he is still not over that. The cough still lingering.

Valerie, Glad you made it back safely. agree with Judy, Jessica Smith is good for a beginner. She has some good free workouts on YouTube to try out before committing to any purchase. When I talked to the nurse to set up the appointments for the second test and with the DR, she told me to stay away from the BP cuff...it was making me more tense and nervous because I am stressed about what the results will be. I thought about the caffeine too, have been drinking herbal tea the past couple of mornings. Did not seem to make a difference today though.

Carolyn, thanks for the info on WW.

Diane Sue, if Gertie is doing well with the food you have been using, with no stomach upsets, or losing hair (!), I would also be very reluctant to change. There must be a way to reduce her calories...maybe just less food at meal times? Even a quarter cup or eighth cup less at each meal may make a difference.

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

I had my grandchildren here this afternoon so am late getting back here. I went to make a zucchini chicken basil hash whole 30 recipe tonight and the chicken package said it had 1 1/2 lb of chicken breast. I thought I would save one breast for a meal tomorrow, but when I went to weigh it out that package really only had 1 lb in it. I have ran into this before when I purchased ground beef and thought the package looked less than a lb. I am wondering if this is how they sneak some extra funds off of purchases. Most people are not going to weigh that package. I got it at Walmart. So, no extra for tomorrow. It snowed last night so schools were closed today.

Deb, I have already lowered Gertie's food from 1 1/2 cup to 1 1/4 cups twice a day with a tablespoon of pumpkin or some broth. She really lets us know when it is meal time because she is so hungry. I try to play with her every day to help her get some exercises. If I could think of something else filling for Gertie without increasing her calories I would, but not sure how that could be done. I would think too many veggies would be counterproductive. She will eat peas. They don't even have that special dog food in a seafood formula, I just saw chicken with lots of fillers. Why would I want to pay 80.00 for a bag of that. It is not much more than the candidae, but at least it is real food.
It is much better to talk to your PC physician. They will look at your records and go over things much better than just talking to a nurse that answers the phone. Maybe your physician will have some other suggestions. I think most people would have some elevated blood pressure with stress. Would the antibiotics or other meds or supplements affect your blood pressure? Just the stress of worrying over it is not going to be helpful. I am still anxious over my situation.

Carolyn, I do like Jessica Smith's walking workouts. I should try one of her longer ones on YouTube. For some reason I kind of like the downloads I have better other than the cardio abs. I guess I learned just because I like some I may not like all of them. I hear you on not wanting to go out. That is why I went out ahead of this snow that came in. Melted some this afternoon though and the ground was pretty warm. Hopefully driving is okay in the morning for those who have to go to work.

Judy, I like that extension on Kelly's Strong and Lean workout. Nice workout mix.

Valerie, I know caffeine affects me. I don't have a blood pressure cuff, but I can literally get shaky and feel my heart racing when I have too much caffeine. I drink what is half the caffeine coffee with lions mane mushroom in the morning and a cup of tea from matcha green tea powder in the mornings. Both do not bother me. I think the kombucha tea has a little in it too. But that is all I can have. Add anything else and I can be in trouble. Glad you made it back. Those kinds of trips away always lead to a shopping trip and getting things put back in order.
