Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/15

Good morning,

Not a good nights sleep. I think it was all the "junk" I ate yesterday. I don't know why I do that to myself.

Josie, I bet you are sad about your DD moving out, like Lynda said, I remember you looking at colleges with her. How the time flies.

Valerie, welcome back! that trip sounds lovely. I don't think I would like to run into those feral pigs!

Lynda, jumping out of windows in their underwear??? The snow has finally gotten to them. LOL. Was your son part of this snow party? :) I looked around the net for info on Doc Marten season 7...not to much info out there. I saw a schedule that said it would be on TV in September, but not sure if that was in Britain or here.

Lori, LOL on the upper body SnowMax workout. I can't believe your mayor had to actually ask kids to stop the underwear snow play. John said that they have "shack nasties"....his term for cabin fever. Too funny.

Judy, glad you're muscles/sciatica is getting better. Josie may have hit the nail on the head with the shoe theory.

It is so cold and it snowed more here last night....so sick of this too. It will be May before the snow piles along the roads melt.

Stay warm!

Lori strong work on cutting the cable! you have to give things a try ..... it will be somewhat different for everyone in regards to what they're happy with, and what works where they live. we could not get roku to work at all, but apple TV worked immediately. didn't I see that Cathe has a Roku specific app? we don't have a blue ray player either, and I'm not sure why. probably because our older one keeps on working without a problem. usually we upgrade when part of the current system fails.

Deb, one week! how did that sneak up so suddenly??? the park person said they fenced the pigs out because "pigs behave like pigs" and these are HUGE. they root up everything and eat everything they can get their hooves on. including bird eggs. not sure how condors nest but seems like pigs would be a risk so that's one reason to fence them out. the cage was used to entice pigs in to capture them so they could be moved or euthanized. there is still one old pig in the park they can't catch. we were a long way off when I spotted them but my first thought was "elk" and my second was "there are no elk here".... you could not tell what they were without binoculars so no risk at all but an incredible coincidence.

Josie... the penalty of spending time with kids.... they are little puddles of viruses and they spread it like crazy. (Please tell us your DD has gotten them vaccinated! ) I get so sick with head colds I'd opt to avoid them when they're sick. probably hard for you, since with two... one probably always has something. Hope your DD does well with her move.

Judy you are wise to back off a little until this lessens. when I switch shoes, I do it gradually by switching back and forth between old and new shoes for a week or two to adjust shoes are certainly a place to cause a problem.

Lynda, the wildlife was fantastic. we've seen lots of these birds and animals before but mostly using a telescope. never could get close. here, we were so close we didn't always need binoculars. the otters were amazing. incredibly buoyant, especially the pups. their baby fur makes them so buoyant they can't dive until it's slowly replaced by adult fur. we never saw a condor close up, only soaring. still impressive. and ugly.

when I look at the weather pattern, it looks like the high pressure over the pacific causes the jet stream to bump north, and then drop south past the rockies, over the Midwest to east coast. Do your weather forecasters give you a explanation for why? do they talk about el nino? this affects us too, but the opposite way. we've been ridiculously warm and have no snow pack to speak of.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did the legs with contrast training (40:35). I modify the impact moves a lot, but still feel like I am getting a good workout.

Deb, no way my son would be that foolish. He says that all of these storms have actually led to more neighborliness and kindness. He has helped people shovel out parking spaces and apparently once you do that to your space, you plant something there to let people know it's taken. Bostonians actually honor this form of reservation if you have a permit for a certain street you live on. Will you have a retirement party next week?

Valerie, condors are definitely not ground-nesting birds and last I heard, pigs can't climb--or fly, for that matter. In the Safari park, they were perched way, way up on a pinnacle with a bushy looking nest. You could really see them well with binoculars. Enormous netting over the aerie, so you could watch them soar. They had a cheetah run too. We really chose the right day to go--Super Bowl Sunday, so not the usual crowds of people according to my friend. Our local weather people talk about the jet stream carrying all of this Arctic air down and east, yes, but I haven't heard them say anything about el nino. Yesterday was actually rather nice, going all the way up to about 27, but today it's lightly snowing, and we are about to get kicked with sub-zero temps again.

Judy, maybe you should see an orthopedist and see if s/he can't do something for you. You know me and my love affair with cortisone.

Valerie, are you ready for more winter?? This next week sounds frigid.

Hi to Josie!

Good evening ladies!

Today I did Cathe Live Hi/Lo Cardio Kickboxing. I really enjoyed it and felt it was a great workout for upper body and legs. I will be doing this one again.

Lynda...you are correct about marking your space. People use all sorts of items too. And let me tell you ...you do not EVER take a space that is marked that is not yours. It could get ugly! I have heard some stories over the years. Ohhhh the cold. This winter is never going to end. That leg workout is a great workout...modifying or not. The other day I did the weight premix only and my legs felt completely worked.

Valerie...I think we did really good with the cost. So far we do not miss the other channels. My DH is so happy with the Roku and able to quickly access Netflix or Amazon. If we add anything it would be the extended basic for another $20. But to tell you the truth I do not think we need it. Yes Cathe now has a channel on Roku which I will enjoy but not the main reason we went with this one. A nice bonus though!

Deb...I know how you feel with uneasy sleep. I hope tonight is better. Boy when I get a lousy night's sleep it really affects me. But just think....retirement is knocking at your door!!!!

Judy...glad you are getting back into things. Where exactly is your pain? Reason I ask is I have started with a dull pinch deep in my glute. I really notice it when walking. Not terrible pain by all means but just enought to let me know something is there. My good friend told me this morning I might have lumbar something or other and I need to go to the doctors for an MRI. He kind of freaked me out a bit. I used my inversion table today hoping it helps. This getting old stuff is terrible. I do not like it at all!!!

Josie...hope you are feeling better!

Actually it turns out condors are "sort of" ground nesting birds, depending on what you call "ground". . they nest up in cliffs on ledges, cracks or caves, and like trees nearby to roost. I haven't found much about if they always build an actual nest. maybe enough so the eggs don't roll off the cliff. they soar well but don't really like to take off, flap and fly like most birds. they prefer high spots where they can just push off the edge and glide. the areas they have blocked off in Pinnacles are high rocky, cliffy areas. we didn't see any sitting around, just soaring overhead. the areas did not look like good pig habitat and more likely human rock climbers could interfere.

I did a full Pedal Power, and core 1 and my arm exercises. unfortunately the shoulder discomfort is returning. I don't think the little bit of kayaking I did helped it any. not as bad as originally but concerning. I thought I was done but I guess not.

still working on the bathroom. the counter top people measured today but then when we unwrapped the shower door, it was missing some major parts. was not put together right at the factory. so we had to re order one and it will be another 2 weeks.

Lori-it sounds like we might have something similar. I do have a dull kind of pain deep in the glute. Like yours, it's not terrible, but I do notice it, especially when doing squats or lunges. If it was a sudden, terrible or sharp pain or if I was having trouble standing or walking I would be more concerned and go right to a doctor, or the ER.

Happy Friday!

I am off today and Monday, winding down the vacation days. I still will have 8 days left when I am done, and they will just be paid out to me.

Valerie, sorry about the shoulder pain coming back. I would think kayaking would not be good for that. Yes, the time did go by fast. I formally announced my retirement at the end of October. It seemed like it was so far away at that time. We get some sort of explanation on the weather, but to tell you the truth, I don't even listen...it's just a blur of words...and all we want to hear is that it is going to be DONE soon. We get one day this weekend where it will go up to 30 degrees, then it plummets down again to single digits being the high during the day, and below zero temps at night. Right now as I am typing it's -8 degrees.

Lynda, that is one good thing about storms and things like this....you get to see and talk more to your neighbors, and everyone is in the same predicament and tries to help each other. We had a huge blizzard in 1977 where stores were out of food, and everyone was going to their neighbors houses checking on them, sharing food, or toilet paper or whatever people needed. It was so memorable, that there is still a "Blizzard Ball" each year on the weekend closest to the date to "celebrate" it.

Lori, it sounds like you may have a piriformis issue too. Go to the link I put in above for some good stretches for that.

Hi to Josie, & Judy,

I hope to get a workout in today, and some stuff done around here...need to go to the store for the dog food ingredients etc etc.

Stay warm!

I have a birding app on my phone ( Sibley) that's great for quick information to ID what you might be looking at, to compare male/ female summer /winter plumage. there's a link to Wikipedia which has WAY more info on most birds. loads and loads on condors because they've been studied so much and were so near extinction. still are really with problems with lead shot and trigger happy ranchers.

I'm a casual "birder" . when we go somewhere I usually take binoculars along and look see what's around. the Pinnacles trip was unusual in that we hoped to see condors.

Deb, that's so true about bad weather bringing people together. we met neighbors we'd never met during our several winters of very heavy snow and big power outs. we're more likely to get those conditions in la nina winters, when there's a cold pool of water in the pacific. (el nino is warm water) those el ninos are your "mild"winters, at least that's what it sounds like. I am not sure what a "normal" winter is anymore.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Low Impact 2 with Core 1--approximately 38 min. I think.

We may get another 3-5 inches this weekend. I just hope it isn't freezing rain, and I hope Boston doesn't get too much rain. Think of that mess.

I think we may go to Comfort Sunday this weekend--the menu sounds good. Then it's Oscar night for me.

Sorry about all those aches and pains, ladies.

Enjoy the weekend and stay warm!

Good evening ladies!

I ended up not working out today. I have really been in a funk and I am starting to hate it. I am sure it is due to this terrible winter.

Judy...that is why my friend is concerned for me....his dull pain turned into a sharp pain shooting down his leg. Came on out of nowhere. I used the inversion table and I feel better today. Hoping it does not turn into anything. I plan to keep a close eye on it.

Lynda...yes more snow this weekend. I do not think we will have the rain predicted for Boston but we will have more snow. Tomorrow my DS and I are going to the Old Mill which is only 2 miles from our home for comfort food. They have wonderful pecan rolls, corn fritters with maple syrup and chicken pot pie that we love. This will be my incentive to have a fabulous workout beforehand!!!

Deb...I will look at the link in the morning. It is the weirdest thing. One day it was just there deep in the glute. Never related it to what Judy is going through until yesterday. Like I said I am not liking this getting old baloney. Seems like it has been one thing after another with me lately!

Valerie...that totally stinks that you had to reorder the door. I would be furious! I like to watch the birds. None are like you have. We do have a hummingbird that comes around and a few cardinals and blue jays but that is all I see around here!!! I have kept my bird feeder with plenty of seeds. With all the snow I need to make sure the birds are fed. Poor things.

Hi to Josie!

Good morning,

Class was cancelled last night because the trainer had her pipes freeze and she was waiting for the plumber to get there. We are supposed to "warm up" today or tomorrow...maybe into the 20's! This is really getting old.

Valerie, my grandparents were avid bird watchers. I can't imagine the look on their faces if they were here to see an app for it.

Lynda, what is your choice for "best picture"? I started watching "Bosch" and am really hooked on it! Thanks for recommending. :)

Lori, yes definitely keep an eye on the leg/back situation. Mine came on suddenly, but I knew when it happened. I thought it would go away, but it wasn't something that could heal on it's own.

Hi to Judy, & Josie,

Stay warm!

Deb books are still the best source but hard to carry. I use the app when we're "out" but refer to a book ( if needed) when back at the camper. the app plays bird calls and songs too, so you can ID birds that way. that is something a book can't do. sort of like maps versus GPS. each has its strengths and weaknesses.

we did a 15 mile ride yesterday not hard but pleasant. probably doing vegie garden prep today. the cover crop is getting so tall we need to till it before it gets unmanageable. we had home grown kale from the garden yesterday. I also had to flame the weeds in our driveway. we get 'winter weeds" and it's best to toast them before they go to seed.

I have never had a hip leg problem like what you describe so I'm not contributing because I don't know anything. I'd switch to a different exercise approach to let it settle down.

ETA "crazy" about the shower door. it's an expensive door... around $800 .... and they don't want it back? we could never repackage the metal rails, screws washers etc because it was all shrink wrapped but the doors are big sheets of tempered glass packed. for shipping. it's beyond me how a door could get out of a factory without any brackets. no doors come like that! so we have a complete door and hardware but can't be attached because no mounting brackets.

we are re-watching "The Bridge". are re-watching the first season before the second season.

I will watch the AA tomorrow but only saw one movie.
I have no thoughts on who should or shouldn't win. when we were in CA niece's DH showed us a site where you could see first run movies still in theaters. I'm thinking it must be from in-theater recording devices that someone then posts online? the quality looked decent but I am not big on watching a movie on my computer. they were watching "American Sniper".

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning was Housemax.

Deb, I think Boyhood will probably win, but I really thought it was too long and often banal, ordinary. Birdman really impressed me and I loved Michael Keaton. I have a feeling they may give best director to Inarritu and best film to Boyhood as a way of acknowledging both films. Just a hunch on my part. I hope Amazon does several more seasons of Bosch. I thought it was very true to Michael Connelly's character.

Lori, your friend sounds like what my DH had--a shooting pain from his glute into his leg. His regular doctor put him on prednisone for awhile, but he hated the side effects--made him feel all hyped up and crazy. I was the one who read about epidurals, and I suggested he try it because he was also getting periods of numbness in his leg. The epidural amazingly just took the inflammation away and he's been fine ever since. I know what you mean about the weather dampening one's spirits. I felt so great when I first came home from Rancho La Puerta, and now it feels ages ago. I still haven't gained back the 5 lbs, though, so I'm pleased about that.

More crap headed our way. When will this winter ever end???

Hi Ladies,

Met my friend Angie in Long Beach for a bootcamp class and a rowing class. The classes were fun and we got a good whole body workout, then we went to brunch to a place called Starling Dinner. I had a pork and potato burrito topped with Chimichurri sauce and a mimosa made with pear juice. It was amazing!

It's funny that you ladies are to the point of calling snow crap ;).

I will be back later.

Josie
