Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/17

Hi Ladies,

I will be going to spin class later on today then back home to start my Christmas baking :). My DS and his family are coming over on the 25th and so are the peanuts. I'm happy to finally have them all together at the same time.
The peanuts are very excited to meet their new brother.

Deb, it looks like you finally found a good rotation to stick to. If it gets boring or monotonous I will drop it. I have been avoiding Christmas parties this year.

Lori, so glad that your eye is better. I wear contacts and I know how painful it is when something gets in there.

Valerie, I've only had one colonoscopy and that was 8 years ago. I'm on the 10 year plan and so is my DH, he is do for one now.

Judy, you are a spinerval maniac. You are ready for Aids Life Cycle :). I plan on riding again in 2016 just in case you want to join me ;)

Garance, your Christmas menu sounds wonderful.

Josie

Deb, that is the deal with DH. there are 2 kinds of polyps but usually can't be identified by just looking at them so they snip them off and send to pathology where the type is identified. one type could eventually become cancerous while the other does not. so when they find the pre cancerous ones, they step up the schedule so everything that shows up is small and easily removed. pretty much the same thing that happens with external skin lesions. Everyone in DH's family has had polyps and the ones that have not are the people who haven't been screened! we've been leaning hard on SIL to get screened as she's already had 2 serious malignancies and has not had her colon looked at, and is resisting doing it. Sorry you need to do this q 3 years but it beats the alternative.

Lori, glad you are getting better.

I did about 20 the treadmill and 2 core workouts in a row yesterday. decided against yoga this morning. had an awful time sleeping last night and knew I wouldn't be able to get up. will definitely do an upper body workout today using 5 lbs. I would have gone to yoga if I'd been able to sleep but was sill up at 2 tossing and turning.

DH is now storming around because somehow the laundry room faucet isn't working and is jammed in place. I swear, sometimes everything stops working at the same time.

ETA that I wear contacts too, but soft ones and it's pretty crazy when some bit of crud gets in . It's pretty easy to put a soft lens in inside out... and that is annoying but not as bad as a bit of debris. I never sleep with lenses in though I know people who do. I'm quite functional without them in and often go much of the day before bothering to put them in. this is the only benefit to aging that I can find so far.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did AT (56:00).

Deb, Max received his toy in the mail today. I will let him have it this evening. I'm sure he will be thrilled. He makes toys out of discarded paper towel tubes--anything really. Tosses them in the air like a ball. Thanks! It sounds like you have finally found a rotation that works for you. I think you will like the second low impact workout. I will try the legs tomorrow and see if I can modify the cardio bursts.

Lori, I wear hard contacts and man oh man, when I get something in my eye, it's crazy. I'm so glad you are feeling better and healing.

Valerie, how true. When one thing goes wrong it's like a domino effect. \

Sounds like you will have a house full, Josie, on Christmas Day. I am finished with my baking--2 bars, 2 cookies. That's enough.

Judy, I agree with Josie--you do such long workouts on the cycle you are probably fit for the Lifecycle ride with Josie.

Good morning,
Today I got up and did a treadmill workout...this replaces the HIIT Plyo workout that was scheduled in the rotation. I have that one Ebay.

Well, Kylee's ultrasound showed calcium oxalate crystals in her left kidney. no stones. the blood work was good, all normal values. They want us to put her on the prescription food for urinary track issues, same as what we did previously for Keegan. I am not thrilled with this. That food was horrible, Keegan was not getting reoccurring stones, however his overall health suffered. He has thrived on the homemade diet, which is what Kylee eats too. The vet was very down on the homemade diet. Not sure what to do. We agreed to try the food, and then do another urine analysis to see if the crystals are gone. I wish I could get a consult with a homeopathic vet that focuses on nutrition.

Josie, sounds like you have a great Christmas planned. Like you said, I wish I could have avoided the party yesterday, definitely ate too much.

Valerie, You are so right! Once things start to break, it's like a tidal wave! LOL..I had the pre-cancerous polyps, so that is why I had to go on the 3 year plan. Now I am on the 5. It's fine with me, this is the best procedure for preventing cancer that is out there, and it is not that big of a deal to do. I have been nagging my friend to get her first one done, her father died from complications with colon cancer and she has been putting it off for years.

Lynda, I hope Max likes the toy. Let us know how the leg blasts are for modifying. If they are not that bad, I may add them back in next time.

Hi to Judy,

Work, then agility class with Kylee,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

I did the whole leg workout with modifications on many of the cardio blasts (40:35). I thought it was pretty easy to modify or just not jump as high or go as deep on the scissors. I like this one better than I thought I would and will probably try to get closer to matching Cathe's weights next time.

Deb, Max loves his toy, but DH is worried that he loves it so much he might try to take it outside and bury it. That's too bad about your friend. I'm surprised her doctor hasn't insisted she have a colonoscopy given her family history. That's what happened to me when my mom's cancer was discovered.

I will try to see a movie some time this weekend, and I'm pretty sure we will be going out to dinner on Sunday.

Enjoy your pre-Christmas weekend everyone!

Just wanted to let you know my colonoscopy was good. I don't have to get another one for 10 years. I'll catch up on everyone's posts later today or tonight.

Judy

Congrats on the clean report Judy. My DH however talked to his gastroenterologist and he is now going to be repeating annually. the family hx is strong and this was a fairly large polyp considering, so he is OK with it. not thrilled but he will do it.

Lynda, believe me.... doctors told everyone to get scoped. their own son is a doctor and they wouldn't listen even to him. Multiple times. he talked to them many times. you can't physically drag resistant adults in to do something they should do. Dh tried and tried but they refused. We even sent them stool cards to do at home, not as good but better than nothing. but they wouldn't. and then it was too late. You are wise to follow good advice when it's given.

Deb, how will you feed the 2 dogs different foods? Is there a veterinary school around there where you could get another opinion? I know that in people, you can feed different people the same thing and some will form crystals and stones and others do not. so it's maybe due to the individual dogs' physiology rather than the food itself. I think you should try the food and see if it makes a difference. I was surprised when my kitty loved the new food and the problem totally resolved.

Valerie, I'm sorry your DH has to get them annually now. To be honest, I was very resistant in getting this done. DH and our doctor have been hounding me since my 50th birthday and it took me 2 years to get up the nerve to schedule it. I'm so glad I did though.

Hi Everyone,

I didn't get any workouts in yesterday or today but hopefully will be back at it this weekend. Tuesday we are going to Colorado to spend Christmas with my in-laws. It was kind of a last minute decision on DH's part. He really wants to be with his sister for the first Christmas since their father passed. I found a cat-only vet and "kitty camp" that does boarding over the holidays so we will be dropping Chino and Shadow off Tuesday morning. We will be driving out, staying over night in Missouri then getting to Colorado Springs on Christmas eve. We're going to stay until the 27th, then drive back.

Josie, I'll keep 2016 in mind. I would love to do the Aids Life Cycle with you! That certainly gives me lots of time to train and plan for it.

Deb, I'm sorry about Kylee. Our vet is trying to convince us to switch to Science Diet (regular not prescription) for the cats and I am not about to do that. I know some of the prescription formulas work but I agree that otherwise the quality isn't there. I hope you find a good alternative.

Lynda & Valerie-DH is on a 5 year schedule. When he had his colonoscopy he had diverticulosis and the doctor said retest in 5 years. Just yesterday DH told me his Grandmother had colon cancer and had a colostomy. This was the first I have heard of it and DH hasn't told the doctor!?! At least he will be getting another one soon, his first one was in 2011. Now that I know about his Grandmother, I'm going to try to get him to retest this year.

Lori-I'm so glad your eye is better. I hope you are doing ok.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Judy

I think there's a generation of people who kept health issues secret.... like it was something to be ashamed of. my father's family was like that. they were very private about a lot of things, no clue even about how some people were related.

DH's family...the older people .. were very opposed to a colonoscopy ( or any other less invasive checks) even though one by one they have died of colon cancer. the next generation doesn't know what happened because no one would say. I know little about my fathers family.... except no cancer that I'm aware of. DH is trying to ride herd on his brother and sisters to make sure it doesn't continue like that.

got in a premix of bi's/tris, core 1 and 15 on the elliptical. I'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Good morning and Happy Weekend!

I am going into work this morning, we are doing the big inventory project that we have to do each year at this time. Good news is this is my last one!

Hopefully, I may not have to be there all day like before.

Lynda, I am glad Max likes his toy. they are so easy to make and for my dogs, having something that they can't destroy and that they actually play with is a great thing.

Judy, Good News on the colonoscopy! Hope your DH listens to the DR and at least goes back for the one he advises to do. Why would the vet want you to switch to non-prescription Science Diet food?

Valerie, I have fed different foods before, when we had Keegan on the prescription food, and Kylee on a commercial dog food. I am mostly concerned with the lack of anything of any nutritional value in that prescription food. You are so right on how each dog ( or person) reacts to different foods etc when it comes to stones or crystals. My maternal grandfather had a colostomy bag, and I think it may have been cancer, but you are right, we didn't hear much when I was a kid. He never had chemo or anything like that so I'm not sure if it even was cancer.

Hi to Josie,

Have a great weekend!

That's exactly what I mean Deb, how do you know family history if no one knows and no one says? plus ailments were called by different names not always medically accurate. it would have been good to know why your grandfather had a colostomy for cancer or for other reasons. I'm quite sure many on my fathers side had type 2 diabetes but no one mentioned it. hypertension too. My father had a brother who died as an adult but no mention ever of him, not even sure of his name. he had a sister he was close to and another "sister" who was an alcoholic or maybe not even a sister? maybe a half sister? I knew her name but it was not spoken of. secrets, secrets.

what things do you put in your home made dog food? I'm just curious, don't know anyone who regularly made food for their pets. I'm curious if there are high oxalate containing ingredients that maybe you could modify? I doubt it's that simple though. a lot of vegetables are high.

Good afternoon ladies,

Starting to feel like my self again. Wow this eye thing really brought me to my knees. I was unable to do anything but lay on the couch monday, tuesday and wednesday. Started getting relief once he removed the lense. My vision is not back yet. Still blurry. Trying not to be overly concerned as he mentioned this was normal. I went to work on thursday but only could make it half the day. Did the same on Friday. The fluorescent lights were just too much too soon.

Pretty sure I have lost weight too as I have had no appetite until today and of course I have not worked out at all. Today I am planning to take Chester for a walk and might do the same tomorrow. I may do some Barre but only if I feel up to it.

Josie...that would be so much fun to do the ride. Send me the info. Not sure if I can commit but I would love to look into it.

Deb...so sorry about Kylee. You have been making their food for a while. Speaking of food my little Nilla seems to only like the cat's food now! So that is what I have been feeding her. She is the most picky dog I have ever owned. As long as she eats I am ok even if it is cat food. Could it really do harm?

Valerie...same with my family. My mom died 20 years ago and took the family health with her. We have no idea how some relatives died. That generation just did not talk about it like we do now. I never knew I was the only baby she carried that she needed to take diabetes medicine for. You would think when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes carrying my son she would have mentioned this! My aunt just happened to mention this too me a couple years back. I now have type 2 and we believe my mom had it also.

Judy...glad the colonoscopy went well. I did the same thing kept putting off and finally went at 52. I am on a 10 year cycle so good for a while. I did have my mamogram on monday morning even while I was having my eye issue. I receved a call on Tuesday that they needed me to come back. Made the appt after my eye appt on wednesday just to get it done and all is fine. Was a little un-nerving and glad I did not wait.

Lynda...are you planning to see the Hobbit? I really wanted to go today but with my eye still blurry makes no sense. And becuase of it being blurry it is throwing me off a bit making me have moition sickness. I just can't win. A boyfriend of mine in High school wore hard contacts. Didn't think they were still around.

I left the house at 8am to finish up all my xmas shopping before the crowds came out. Got everything done plus grocery shopping and was home by 11:30am. Now it is housemax and take care of my animals that I have neglected all week.

Have a great afternoon!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning it was Housemax and I just returned from seeing The Theory of Everything. Excellent film and quite moving.

Lori, I may try to see the Hobbit film tomorrow before we go out to dinner tomorrow night. It's another long one, and if I had eye issues, 3D is probably the last thing I would be looking at. People who have astigmatism can't wear the soft lenses, nor can they get lasik surgery, so there are still a lot of people wearing hard lenses. So glad you are feeling better. Did the doctor have any preventive advice? It just seems strange to wake up and suddenly have a major trauma to your eye.

Judy, that's great news about your colonoscopy. I'll be getting my next one some time in April.

Deb, now you sound like retirement is going to be great. Great toy for Max--tug of war last night and it didn't fall apart. Still looks in perfect shape.

Hi to Josie and Valerie!
