Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/11

My workout is done, dog bathed, bedding changed, baths cleaned, now a chance to take a break and eat something :) I need to go in search of the compression sports bras with the back hooks I had. I won't need them for a bit but they may be in the top of the closet.
I did the Suzanne Bowen rebounder workout, 23 minutes. That is a leg burner. I jumped harder than they did, jacks, tuck jumps, high knee running etc. for me. I burned 141 calories doing this workout. I then did the X10 mix that just omits the circuit at the end, 63 minutes, heart rate 136 avg./168 max, 521 calories. I also did 10 minute ab chisel, 11 minutes, 55 calories. Total time was 97 minutes, calories burned 717.

Carolyn, you probably burned more calories than that. I usually have an idea where I should be by how hard I worked and I can estimate and go back and look at past logs before the Fit Bit and find I am right. I wouldn't worry either. Sometimes if it is close I just take what it says. You know if I enter different data from other sources and date it Fit Bit adjusts accordingly. The app quite often gives a slightly different heart rate than the watch. I don't know why.

Valerie, we have had several homes where we shared phone numbers with neighbors for emergencies. I have one of the neighbors phone number on a business card. She is gone a couple of weeks at a time because she travels and fixes hospital problems?? Not sure what kind of job that is. We have some new neighbors as some of the elderly ones have left or passed away. We are at the end of a dead end in a circle so you kind of see what all is going on around you. Her box was there when I woke up this morning but after I showered I noticed it is gone. She does not come out as much as she did the first year we were here. My husband thinks I am nosey because I watch the neighbors. I can't help it if I see what is going on. Well maybe when an ambulance comes and I go upstairs and stand on my step so I can see out the front window onto the street I am nosey? Her doorstep and driveway is facing my dining room window where I sit at the computer and I read a lot so I wee over there when I look out. I have met several of the neighbors but the new ones all kind of keep to themselves. Oh, and the lady next door quite often opens her front door and her little white scottie sits in the window of the storm door and barks at the neighbors. It is a sweet dog. She used to walk it around the immediate area.
I sometimes can fall asleep playing words with friends. That is sort of a neutral area that doesn't over activate the mind. My husband tells me he gets the same amount of sleep as I do because all of my coughing, bathroom breaks, and moving around keeps him awake. I don't where the watch to bed often. I did just read that if you wear it to sleep it more accurately calculates your resting heart rate. I feel like I do not want to live in that watch though. Obviously I am not wearing it to surgery tomorrow. It would be interesting to see the heart rate patterns afterward though. I remember having Fit Tv too. I had discovered Cathe before we had Fit Tv though. I used to follow a Firm check in that dropped into the e mail. I heard about Cathe there and got Power Max. She had a small forum then with 200 people.

I need to make another soup tonight. Maybe without so much meat in it. I have been kind of put off with meat the last few days. Yesterday I had an egg with spicey butter fried yams with onions, kale and garlic. It tasted so good I had it again for lunch today. That and yogurt is all that really sounds good.

Good evening ladies!

No workout this morning. I took Nyquil before bed and felt so tired when I woke up this morning. I slept great but was not expecting to feel so tired.

Deb...I updated the spreadsheet and posted. Thanks for the reminder. Been meaning to do it but have been so busy. It has been a while since I last updated! If you still want the excel list I'll be glad to send. Hope you are feeling better. I had my annual physical on Monday and went for blood work. Should have the results soon. Curious to see how my diabetes and cholesterol have been.

Diane Sue...I thought the same thing with that bounce workout. Short but really felt the barre sections. I also do my own thing when it is time to bounce. She is way to easy for me! Great calorie burn! You go girl!!! Your picture was beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Sounds like you are well prepared for your surgery. Will be thinking of you and pray for a speedy recovery.

Carolyn...I have never done a chris freytag workout either. She seems to have a great following. I have yet to try out the Vertical workout. It seems like it has been ages since I have done a live workout. I kind of feel burned out a bit from them. I love them but needed to branch out a bit. I started with these since day one. Right now I am enjoying barre, bouncing and heavy ropes.

Valerie...that stinks that the skiing was a bust. I have intensity and I like some of the segments. I am with you on the step portions. No thanks for me! I never saw Cathe on FitTv. Wish I had as I would lhave loved it for sure!

Judy...is Pure Strength the one where she has short hair and wears a headband? I remember loving the leg dvd. Must have done that one 100 times with my neighbor in the 90's. At the time this was really the only time I used weights in a workout. I think I may pull this one out this weekend!

Have a great night all!

Hi Everyone,

I took a rest day today. I might do a short ab workout tonight and get back to normal workouts tomorrow. It is going to be very cold here for the rest of the week, highs in the teens and wind chills below zero. Thursday is supposed to be the worst day. Chris has 2 weeks vacation starting next Monday.

Deb-I'm sorry you weren't feeling well :( I hope you feel better today. I hope you were able to get your blood work done.

Diane Sue- I will be thinking of you tomorrow. I hope you have a quick recovery.

Lori-Thanks for the spreadsheet! Yes, Pure Strength is the one where she has short hair and a headband. I'll have to do the leg workout this week. It sounds like a good one.

Valerie-I never saw Cathe on FitTV either. I haven't tried Intensity yet. If it is a lot of step I probably wouldn't like it that much.

Carolyn-I'm not sure how accurate the Fitbit is for calories burned, but I do like it for steps and sleep. The 10 minute quick fix for lower back is great. I do that one at least once a week now.

Have a good night!

Judy

Good morning,

Yesterday I did Live Compound Giant Sets Light Weights. One of my favorite Live workouts.
.It's supposed to be really cold here starting tonight and the rest of the week, with a lake effect storm...Fun, wow..

Carolyn, those sound like interesting workouts. They are probably on YouTube as well? I feel the same about the vertical loading workout...very interesting premise, and no dread factor.

Diane Sue, Thinking about you today and sending good vibes for all to go well...That is pretty good sleep considering how many times you were awake coughing. 131 steps? maybe a couple trips to the bathroom? That's great that Gertie will walk right into the shower. We used the laundry tubs and our dogs don't like it, they don't fight it or anything but can't wait to be "released" to run off and shake etc. That's scary about your neighbor, I hope she is ok. Maybe she is off visiting someone.

Valerie, I guess I didn't think about liquids not processed right away. They say that if you are using any type of device with a screen, eg: phone, e-reader, iPad etc, the blue light is bad for sleeping. I experimented with that and intentionally did not watch any device, just read a book and still had sleep issues, so who knows? I also used to have Fit TV until they took it off cable here too....I don't even remember how I discovered Cathe. Maybe like Diane Sue, I got wind of her through The Firm workouts, which I had the first 6 and did them religiously. I had them in Beta format, then repurchased all in VHS.

Lori, glad you are feeling better. Sometimes you have to take something like Nyquil, to help you sleep, even though you know what it does to you the next day. I am tempted at times to take it even when I am feeling ok...just to get the sleep. Thanks for doing the Live list...:). Yes, I would like the spreadsheet if you can send it. I like to sort the workouts by time. I commented on your list in one of the threads, and I think 4 or 5 people PM'd me to send the spreadsheet to them.

Judy, we are getting the same weather as you for the rest of the week and weekend...one of the days, the high is supposed to be either 5 above, or 5 below...not much difference in how that will feel. Any plans for Chris's vacation time?

It's going to be a long day....we got a call at 2:45 am today...the alarm went off in John's office...we just got back from there, spent a good hour or so with the police searching the building. They said they thought they heard a cough when they went inside so they were going along the premise that someone was trapped in there. The common bathroom was locked, which it is not supposed to be. They broke into that. They had a caniine unit there and about 6 other police SUV's. They didn't find anyone, but we are still not sure what set off the motion detector in John's office.

Take care,

Hope everything worked out Ok deb. let us know when you learn more.

I'm pretty sure it was called Fit TV.... a long time ago. there were several different several "exercise" people on, and some cooking shows. then one day I turned on the TV and it was gone. I'd already bought some cathe . I had bought a Kathy smith one a long time before, but I played about 15 minutes of it. It (ETA) was all fancy choreography and I could tell in a few minutes it would never ever work for me. tossed in trash!

I did the spin from x-train, the whole 1 hour . I like that one the best right now. all are pretty similar but I'm trained to keep going as long as the dvd runs, otherwise if I were on my own.... I'd stop sooner!

we are also getting cold weather, although the snow we had down low is gone. Keep in mind that "cold" where I live is anything below freezing. don't have to go too far toward the foothills to get back into snow and much colder temps. the biggest thing is, we need to bring in the hummingbird feeders at night and then put them out early in the am. otherwise the solution will freeze. the little guys are right there in the morning .... almost like humans heading to the coffee pot. we have a light that we can hang near a feeder if it starts freezing during the day. it generates enough heat to keep it thawed. Hummers have just started over wintering here the last few years, started in about 2011. we are at about 500 feet elevation. people at sea level had them before that. global warming is letting them extend their range.

so I had two good nights of sleep, and last night ...no. work up at 2:30 and could not go back to sleep. Deb, I do puzzles on paper or read paper books. I've also read about the light from devices causing a problem but don't notice anything. I keep the I-phone in the dock by my bed but I don't use it except rarely.

all I saw from Intensity was step so I need to look closer and see if there are parts I can do. otherwise, I can donate to anyone who'd like it. Pure strength is one I don't have. there are actually quite a few I skipped over, and I still have more than I can use.

Today I did Rhythmic Step--another oldie. It has some complex choreography too, but not as difficult as some of Cathe's others. It was more fun than frustrating for me. I forgot to mention that I also did a 20 minute JS Gentle Yoga yesterday.

Deb, Chris Freytag does have some things on YouTube Her site is www.gethealthyutv.com. One workout from her site that I plan to do soon is an Amy Dixon HiiT. It is very different from the HiiT that I am accustomed to with Cathe.

Waving hello to everyone.

Valerie, I'm not sure now if it was Fit Tv or Exercise TV, but it was a cable channel. I have read the same about not using devices before going to sleep but that doesn't seem to bother me. If I am having trouble sleeping I will read a real book instead of electronic.

Good evening ladies!

No workout again today. I am feeling better this afternoon but woke up really groggy again. Hoping to get a good workout in tomorrow.

Judy...it is supposed to be really cold here too. GiGi had been loving the snow. She has been cute. JS posted on her FB page a one mile ab workout that is 10 minutes. It looked great and will plan to do it as a finisher. Didn't know if you saw it. My neighbor and I did that leg workout every week for a long time. We loved it. Yes as Deb asked are you making any plans to go away and take advantage of Chris' 2 weeks?

Deb...meant to send you the spreadsheet earlier today. Will aim for tomorrow! Glad you shared the speadsheet. Love that everybody enjoys it. There are so many now! Wow! Really scary aboit John's office. Hope ll is good.

Valerie....I am pretty sure it is FitTv also. I have not seen it but have seen it mentioned at times. That is so nice of you to take care of feeding the hummingbirds. :). Congrats on the hour of Ride. I like the music in that one. I never minded the the songs with the different lyrics. Makes no difference to me. Devices at night do not bother me at all. I usually read on my kindle or Ipad which ever is closest. They both put me right to sleep.

Carolyn...I would never even think of Rhythmic Step!!!! Good for you! AsI mentioned to Judy the JS walked looked fun. Here is the link...

Diane Sue....hoping all went well today. Saw this link for Bellicon workouts over on VF. Nothing to intense but a few of them show they burn a good amount of calories except for #3. That one looks way to slow for me. The con is again they are in a foreign language. But still easy to follow along!

Have a great night all!

Today I did Yoga Tune up upper body shoulders and Suzanne Bowen Advanced Active Stretch broth I left. I just wanted to lo loosen up the tight spots a bit. I read that working out hard just before asurgery can alter blood presser and increases chance for post surgery nausea. Things went well. I am in much less pain than I anticipated. Recovery nurse said this d octor is the best of all with getting patients through without too much pain and usually jo nausea. He cleaned out more of that silicone from 17 years ago. He only got it where he did not have to move too much around in there. The ones I had were not leaking. That makes me feel good because I know the new smaller ones will be strong. No lifting for two weeks. He told that to my husband. He wants me to take it easy. I go in at 8:30 in the morning. I am hoping he removes the drains.
I will respond to posts tomorrow. I want to do it on the computer and have not got it out today.
Mt husband surprised me last night and had my grandsons bring a tall Christmas tree . They put on lights with the ladder and stairs. It kept my mind off of the impending surgery.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. Way too tired. II did get out to get a gift for John....an auto-start for his car. It's 11 degrees right now, and maybe a foot or so on the ground, but it looks like a lot of it was from wind drifting it. That old "lake effect" thing. :). We did not hear any more from the so called "break-in".

Valerie, It was Fit TV. Good job on the spin workout. That is really tough. So good that you make sure the humming bird's feeders do not freeze.

Carolyn, are you doing the December rotation? Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

Lori, good that you are taking another rest day. I'm sure it will help you get better quicker. Thanks for the clips...are these from CD;s or on her youtube channel?

Diane Sue, glad that the surgery went well and you are feeling ok. So nice that your husband and grandkids got the tree and put the lights on. A 2 week rest will be good for you, will probably help your neck and shoulder as well.

I have my first consultation with the nutritionists today. I am hoping they have some insight on how to help my issue with changes in nutrition.

Take care,

Resting today. I had an appointment again today and I have one tomorrow to hopefully get these drains off. I could hardly sleep last night. I got 2 hrs and 15 minutes of sleep. I have to sleep in the recliner because you are supposed to be elevated. I was up so high to avoid pain that my head was flopping all over. I am supposed to stay with this for at least a full week. They told me to day to keep my arms down to my sides, no overhead stuff, easy on off clothes that do not go over the head (this is difficult, I am sitting around in zip up hoodies). They said to drink at least 96 ounces of water a day and eat a high protein diet. No lifting, laundry, vacuuming, dishes, cooking. My husband is going to be busy. I cannot pick up anything over 10lbs. This is probably going to make me crazy after awhile of sitting around. No driving either for the rest of this week at least. My daughter is going to take me to the doctor tomorrow. My husband had to leave to run some errands. Somehow I ran over a nail and the tire needs replaced on my car.
Lori, such sweet pictures. Gigi looks like my daughter's chocolate lab Hershey. Gertie loved the snow when she was a pup.. She would run and dive bomb right into it and snow would be flying all over. Thanks for the videos that you posted. I will be checking them out when I am back to working out.

Deb, that is worrisome having the alarm go off like that. Nothing has been stolen or anything?? I hope the nutritionist can help you out. Did you get the blood work authorized. I may have missed it. Being up the whole day after that short of a night would be hard to do a workout. That is a nice gift idea. I bet John will really love it. It is nice having the car started before you go out into the cold. You are right. A two week rest will probably be good for me all around.

Carolyn, I was eyeing Rhythmic Step and MIC this last week thinking I need to do them again. Rhythmic step is a fun workout.

Valerie, Intensity's first 35 minutes is warm up and step. The rest is a Hiit, low Impact Hiit, and Bootcamp. There are premixes where you can pick and choose. Bootcamp is non step around 13 minutes at the end of the workout and the two hiits are around 18-23 minutes I am not quite sure exact length. I never found the step work to be overly complicated.

Judy, I hope you enjoyed your rest day. That is nice that your husband has a 2 week vacation during the Christmas holidays. Do you have any special plans? I posted above to Valerie about the Intensity workout. I have used it a lot. Sometimes I just use the low impact as an add on to other shorter low impact segments.

Today my workout was Live Smokin Lower Body. My legs were fried by the time we got to the last two exercises.

Deb, I am doing the December rotation with some modifications. Today should have been RWH Lower Body Circuit but I didn't want to do the Plyo moves in that one. Glad to hear that you are consulting with the nutritionists. Hopefully they will be able to help.

Diane Sue, I am so glad that things went well for you yesterday. Enjoy your rest time. That's wonderful that your husband surprised you with getting your tree up. You can enjoy it and have one less thing to worry about.

Lori, thanks for the JS clips. And the Cathe Live list--can't thank you enough!

Hello to Judy and Valerie.

We did a walk yesterday. intended on a hike but we picked a new place to check out. it qualifies only as a walk. 3 miles RT. very cold ( for us) and windy. we had planned to go 2 places but DH really didn't want to drive to the other. I think he was under dressed. anyway, not "nothing" but not a lot of work and not good enough to repeat.

Lori that is just the cutest! Gigi is so photogenic... the camera loves her! enjoy the days off, you will be back to normal work outs in no time. I had no idea there were different lyrics on the songs in Ride. I can't understand any of them anyway!

Deb, sounds like you lost sleep for nothing. good if there was no break in... but not good an alarm was triggered for no reason. you don't want this happening regularly. I know if our home alarm triggers a false alarm more than once, we are subject to a hefty fine. we had one false one when the door between house and garage didn't close 100%. it popped open, triggered alarm. best of luck with the nutritional consult. this sure is dragging out without any real reason found for you feeling bad.

Diane sue so glad to hear your surgery went so well. can't believe you did a mild workout.... yes, be good and take it easy so you heal without interruption.

we need to attend a family wedding in late Feb. (no, we really don't want to go). took care of plane, hotel reservations yesterday. I looked up the registry, got a gift ordered. then it got weird. I got an email shipping notice from the store in. the gift for late Feb shipped immediately. I called the Macys registry ..no one seemed to know much, but they don't 'hold" orders. fill them ASAP, and that if I wanted it in late Feb I should have ordered it in mid Feb. Has something changed? In my experience, if you wait until the last minute all the reasonable things on the registry have been purchased and you are left with $500 candle holders. I ended up emailing SIL to forward a message telling them their gift is going to be there before xmas. I haven't used a bridal registry in a few years and maybe this happened before but I don't think so.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did a Jessica Smith walk and a short ab workout. I think I will try Pure Strength Legs tomorrow.
It's very cold here and it looks like we are getting another snow storm tomorrow afternoon. It's going to be a long winter :(

I don't think we will be doing any travelling over Chris's vacation. I think we will be staying close to home. That could change, but for now we don't have any special plans.

Deb-I hope you had a good meeting with the nutritionists. We have a lot of lake effect snow in Michigan too.

Diane Sue-I'm glad that your surgery went well. I hope you get a lot of rest and enjoy the holidays.

Lori-I love the photos! Gigi and Nilla are so precious! Thanks for posting the JS video. That looks like a good one!

Valerie-XTrain Ride is my favorite Cathe spin workout too.

Hi to Carolyn!

I managed to get 113 grams of protein in today. The Dr octor said try for a hundred a day to help with recovery. IMy husband has nbeen fixing my meals. Since I had some soups and shredded chicken cooked up it is helping. He brought me home d one Cho bani yogurt from Walgreens today wh r n he picked up some medicine for me. It has sugar in it I think but I will take it. I like to stir my protein powder into it. He also came home the d as y before with 3 bags of salad and ranch dressing even though I had not asked. He has been great as bout taking care of me :)

Carolyn, it sounds like you found a good substitute from RWH lower circuit. I always love the smell of a live Christmas tree. It will be nice having most of the decorating done. My granddaughter that was in the picture will come and stay a few days starting Sunday night for finals week at school. We are closer and she will be a blessing to do finals, come back here, and go back to work for after care as t the school. It was fun last year when she did that.

Valerie is it a gift you were having sent to the wedding party? Something hard to take on the plane? That sounds like a lot to do for a wedding that you do not really want to go to. I guess there are just those things that you feel obligated to go to. Hopefully you can find some enjoyable things to do while you are ther besides the wedding. I have not been to a wedding in years. The last one was just us and friends in a park. No huge affair. It was a second marriage for both. He had lost his wife do to cancer. We sort of encouraged the dating:) it has been a couple of years now.

Judy, I pretty much dread winter. If I could hav e a couple of beautiful snowy days that I do not have to go drive in a year I would be happy. I sort of feel that Ride seems more difficult than the others but I don't get quite as high calorie burn. Maybe more difficult climbs and stuff that slows the pace a bit? I am anxious to try the new one when it comes.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. Just not feeling it. I saw that the trucks are on their way to NJ with the new DVD's. :). The consult went well. Gluten and dairy free for a while.

Diane Sue, resting is good...should you even be doing yoga with all the restrictions regarding lifting your arms etc? don't worry about the housework...I'm sure your husband will do fine. :). Nice that he is buying you food that you need. I am the same as you, I can't sleep in a recliner at all. John can sleep for hours in it. Yes, the blood work was authorized and I had it done Tuesday. I hope they get the results to the DR soon.

Carolyn, did you like Smokin Lower Body? She did another lower body workout yesterday...2 weeks in a row.

Valerie, a 3 mile walk in that weather should count for something! yes, if the alarm went off due to a malfunction, it may happen again. :(. We don't get charged here unless it happens 3 times I think. That does sound strange that the gift you ordered has to be delivered now. Good idea just to let them know it will be early. I guess they assume everyone is going to have gifts shipped to their own house and take them to the wedding themselves?

Judy, do you still have the Live subscription? The 2 most current leg workouts look pretty good. Keeping my fingers crossed that Michigan and NY don't get the lake effect that they are predicting.

Meeting an old friend for breakfast...Anything planned for the weekend?

Stay warm!
