Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/9

Good evening ladies!

This morning was SB tabata and tonight was Cathe's live total body high reps. This was a great workout. Was just over an hour and moved really quickly.

Deb...I could never work out at 3:30am. Good for you just bumping it out. Did you order all of Cathe's new Dvd's? I am so excited for them the two clips she has put up look awesome. And the premixes and chapters look great too. She must have really listened to her fans.

Lynda....I was looking at that reverse aging book too. Very curious about it. I most likely will buy the Kindle version. Right now I am rereading Mockingjay so it will be fresh in my mind before the movie comes out. Next on my reading list is Killing Patton by Bill O'Reilly. I loved Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy. Wasn't a a huge fan of Killing Jesus as I felt it was more about everything else than Jesus. I enjoyed it but was not my favorite of the three. Happy Birthday! Enjoy your dinner!

Valerie...thanks for the link. They would have been handy my last hike as it was so slippery with the leaves. Don't know how you do those long hikes! I am so humbled by this. We were dead after our 5 miler!!!

Hi to Josie and Judy!

Lori there are all kinds of 'traction devices".... these were cheap when I bought them. they were a new product and were something like $30, but are now $65. Yaktrax and others probably would work just fine for leaves. these are not for really solid hard ice either, for that you need bona fide crampons.. but as usualy, you get what you pay for and if you use them for some mileage and don't want to buy new ones every year, these are a good choice. just saying ..... many options but they all help keep you from falling on your butt.... going downhill is especially hard because of the momentum.

Lynda Happy Birthday!. my husband's birthday is today. he's celebrating by eating a pumpkin pie I made for him. I want to get some special sunglasses but he has to go try them for fit and that hasn't happened yet. he got me some for my b-day. they have magnetized interchangeable lenses that I love! they are expensive ( $150) but they are wonderful. brand is Switch. no distortion, great fit, and you can switch from dark to rose or whatever securely in a second.

I don't want to be negative all the time but another friend has cancer.... one of my yoga friends. she's been complaining about a mass that suddenly showed up on her back below her shoulder blade. it is large and sudden and didn't hurt... which I found alarming and I know she did too because she was worried. ( she's a nurse). it is an unusual and aggressive tumor. she's being admitted to the hospital for a week of intensive chemo. I am so sad for her. she is such a nice lady. I know her husband too. I don't know if there is anything I can do to help them. I offered via email a week ago but that was before the diagnosis. she was still waiting on biopsy results.

Good morning,
Got up and did a treadmill workout this morning. Felt great. I can say that one of the benefits of this eating plan is I seem to sleep better. I stopped taking the Benadryl as well.

Valerie, we have those spike things as well...got them for the dark, slippery walks we take with the dogs. They are pretty good, but you are right, you can't walk on a regular floor with them. Yes, it's Yaktrax that we have, I couldn't think of the name. So sorry about your friend....it seems like you hear about something like this weekly now. Scary for sure.

Lynda, what is Classical Stretch? Is it from the same instructor you and Lori do the barre workouts with? Do you like any of Cathe's stretch workouts? I am embarrassed to say that I have never even viewed any of the ones from that Cathe DVD. "Aging Backwards"...mm...sounds interesting. Let us know what you think of it. Enjoy your birthday dinner!

Lori, yes, I ordered the whole group of new workouts when the first pre-order came out. I am not sure about some of the moves though, lots of jumping which means a lot of modifying. We'll see. I am glad she made them shorter though. Those spike things that Valerie mentioned are great, if you are even walking on sidewalks in the winter.

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Anyone doing anything fun this weekend? We are going to see a play, "Journey's End" . It's about World War 1. Not my cup of tea, but we have season's tickets, so what the heck.

Work, agility class tonight...it seems like forever since I have been in a class.
Take care,

Deb, thanks for the product support! there are all kinds of the, Stabilicers, yaktrax, microspikes and on. I bought some long ago because we don't get icy conditions here on roads and walks very often. no one is prepared! store parking lots can have some dicey walking especially early in the morning. I've heard people say yaktrax don't hold up well so I tried microspikes. when we use them it might be for 50 yards or for miles. they 're more expensive now but I've used them for years.

this last illness is very scary. she was so active & healthy and suddenly a life threatening illness. when she first talked about it...only a few weeks ago, she let several of us feel the large lump that suddenly appeared in a very odd place. everyone thought she'd torn a muscle and it slumped out of position. but she had zero discomfort,no pain. I am so hoping the chemo works. she's a friend.

Deb glad the plan is working so well.
Lori we start with shorter hikes and increase as the season goes on. I feel like I'm starting in spring after being off for a month. it's like any exercise. doing it gets you conditioned for it. I haven't done a cathe one for a while because of my foot and not wanting to re-injur, so I know that will be hard and I'll do easier ones or shorter premixes until I get used to them again.

Hi Deb, Josie,Valerie, Lori, and Judy

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit with core 1 (49:30).

No, Deb, Miranda Esmonde White is not Suzanne Bowen. Classical Stretch is on PBS in some places and a series that's been on for several years. She has a lot of diehard fans over at video fitness so I thought I would try one of her workouts and the book.

Valerie, that's too bad about your friend and so sudden.

Well, we did get some snow last night. Not ready for this.

I may try to see Birdman this weekend and, of course, dinner tomorrow night.

Have a great weekend everyone,

HI Ladies,

I have not worked out since Wednesday. I have not felt motivated in the last few days. I plan to go spinning tomorrow with my friend and maybe going to body pump. I think that the change in time has affected me. It makes me feel lazy :(

I was just getting my list together for Thanksgiving and dreading going to the market, but I better do it now and avoid the crowds. We are having about 15-20 people this time. We usually have around 30, so I need to figure out how to make less of everything.

Valerie, so sorry to hear about your friend. I hope the chemo works.

Deb, not doing anything exciting this weekend. I will be picking up the peanuts on the 22nd and they will be staying until the 30th. I can't wait! My new grandson is due on the 22nd.

Hi to Garance, Valerie, Judy and Lori!

Josie

Hi Everyone,

I've been doing Spinervals the past few days and now I need to get back to strength training. I don't want to get back into my old habit of focusing too much on cardio and not enough on weights.

Lynda-I'm almost finished watching "The Roosevelts" and I would like to look into a good biography of both TR and FDR. TR was definitely a character!

Valerie-I'm so sorry about your friend, that is so scary.
We have some of the spikes for walking/jogging in slippery conditions. We got ours at REI. They work ok but if I was going to spend a lot of time outside in the winter I would get the Microspikes.

Lori-I am really excited about Cathe's new workouts too. I can't wait to get them!

Deb-great job on your eating plan! It sounds really healthy. I might try cutting out dairy for a couple of weeks and see if I feel any difference.

Josie-I have times when I don't feel motivated to workout either. Sometimes taking a few days off is good, then you come back feeling stronger and more motivated.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Here's a photo of Shadow and Chino that I thought was cute. I had to go out and get Shadow her own soft carrier after seeing this. Now they each have one.111114.jpg

Good morning,
Exciting morning, the alarm system started chirping, and when John went to check out one of the keypads, he accidently hit the panic button...oh boy...10 minutes later there were 3 cop cars and an EMT vehicle at our door....I felt terrible, apologized all over the place, but they were very nice...making sure all was ok...etc.

Valerie, the thing about the Yaktrax is that they are hard to put on and take off if I remember right. Did you order the new workouts?

Lynda, Happy Birthday!

Josie, what happened that made you lose your workout mojo? I dread the shopping for Thanksgiving too. We will have 19 this year. Congratulations on the upcoming new "peanut".

Judy, love the pic of the kitties! Do they cuddle together as well? Or did she just want to be in the carrier?

Hi to Lori,

I have agility this morning and we go to a play this afternoon, otherwise just the usual HouseMax weekend.

Take care,

101314.jpg Thanks Deb. Yes they cuddle too. Misty and Tiger never did that so it was kind of a surprise when I first saw them.

Hi Ladies,

Happy Birthday Garamce! Have a wonderful day.

Deb, I'm blaming the change in time. I feel like it's 10 PM when it gets dark and it just zaps the energy out of me. My partner told me that she has had a hard time too. We promised each other to get back on the horse starting Monday :). I also miss working out with other people. I'm going to go back to body pump in addition to BB. In January im going to start using the beach boot camp that my DD have me for my birthday.

Judy, your babies look adorable.

I will be back later.

Josie

So CUTE!! your kitties are just so adorable and so great that they get along so well. I'm partial to short hair kitties. we had Persians when I was a young, then Siamese. the long hair kitties always get tangles in their fur ..... hard to get out. often need to trim them out with a scissors but they return quickly if you aren't grooming daily. and hairballs!. guess that convinced me I liked shorter hair better. less fuss, sleeker looking. no "kitty battles" trying to comb out the snarls that get bigger by the day.

I've also had trouble with the time change this year. I feel like going to bed early and sleeping for 12 hours! we did a ride yesterday, about 15 miles. it's tricky to get the clothing right and by the time we get it figured out, it will go back to warmer and wetter. .

Oh Deb, that is too funny... your poor DH! we had a false alarm go off once while we were hiking. I guess we didn't firmly close the door between house and garage, and after we left it popped open triggering an alarm. we got a warning there'd be a fine if it happened again in less than a year. funny because we're having trouble with that same door latching lately.

I've never tried yaktrax but microspikes are pretty easy to put on. best to sit ... a challenge to do it standing up, but in hiking clothes that's not a big deal.
No I didn't order the new workouts. If there is a "standout" one I might order it later, but honestly, I have so many that I don't need more.

I hope this doesn't sound insensitive ... but both my friends with bad cancers ..... were outwardly extremely healthy women. exercised, ate well, healthy weight, educated. no crummy lifestyle with bad habits. when this happens to people who are doing everything 'right" it's so much scarier. if someone is a obese, inactive couch potato, junk food eating, smoking, heavy drinking, drug abuser and they get sick, well, don't we all sort of think "they had it coming"? still unfortunate, but you can see reasons for why their health took a down turn. both of my friends were the exact text book opposite, and that's what scares me more. I KNOW a good lifestyle isn't a guarantee of anything but it is still upsetting when the people doing the right thing all the way around get blindsided with bad illness at a young age. Yes, I know life isn't fair, but it still is troubling.
