Good Morning,

Just finished having my protein shake and some oatmeal. Today I did a 30 minute I-Tread and the chest work from STS Meso 2. Hopefully I can keep this up this time.

Nothing much for today except doing some clean up in the yard. DH has been raking for a week and I feel guilty that I have not gone out there once yet. But hey, I was sick.

Garance, I read the book, Marley & Me, should rent the movie one of these days. Keegan was pretty good yesterday, maybe he knew he was on thin ice or something. Or maybe because DH threw the ball for him about 50 times before we went, he was a little calmer.

What is everyone up to today?

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Cathy--

This morning I did disk 4 for chest, shoulders, biceps (55 min.). Pushups, pushups and more pushups.

Deb, I think I already mentioned that we are going to a Rural Lands Foundation dinner, dance, and silent auction. I think I might bid on the Italian dinner for 8 in my home. It starts at 150 dollars and I will go up to 500 maybe. We shall see.

It's beautiful here today--in the 60s and sunny. Not sure what I will wear tonight--whether to do a last gasp of summer or head into my winter wardrobe of covered-up warmth.

We have two feral cats that we have been feeding every now and then. One of them is a gorgeous black cat with absolutely yellow eyes. A couple times when we have left out a can of food the next day he has left a dead mole or a dead mouse--like that's our reward or his payment. The other one is the most pathetic looking grey cat--very small with big ears and so ugly he's cute. He has more or less decided to live in our barn and seems to be polishing off the kibble we put down there for him.

I have to write a report on a manuscript for a press. I plan on giving a very positive report. Loved the book.

Hi... I'm a 61 yr old cathe fan who exercises in some form almost every day. I've been exercising for decades and am looking for a place where I can report what I'm doing, get support, and encourage others to do the same.

Is this a good place? Would you like a new person? If you know of a better thread, please point me in that direction. thanks!

Welcome Traildoggie!

This is the place for us Fifty and older crowd to ask for advice, and get support. We also exchange tips, hints, and even recipes! :D

hi ladies, welcome traildoggie!

well, done nothin' this weekend and nothin' tomorrow , cuz i got my grandkids. i hurt my back doing plyo legs so i decided to rest it yesterday and used a hot pad for a while. then today was church, then family came for lunch, rode horses, and then time to get ready for bed w/the babies. and, i'm about ready for bed too. so, ttyl

Monday Blues

Good Morning,

Yep, it's Monday again...ugh. Living for the weekend is not a good thing, but, hey, when I am retired I will love every day! Workout done, 30 minute I-Tread plus the shoulders from STS.

Cathy, Plyo legs is nasty, I think I did it once and said...uh uh..not for me. Too much impact. I like the squat rack leg workouts much better, even if I don;t go as heavy as you could if you had a real squat rack.

Traildoggie, what is your real first name?

Garance, how was the foundation dinner? did you win that Italian dinner for 8? Did you ever read any of the Bedlam Farm books by Jon Katz? It kind of reminds me of your place, only he is alone and doesn't raise food, just animals, mostly it is about his Border Collies and sheep herding.

Josie, did you get a lot of bike practice in this weekend?

Joan, what is up this week? How is your Mom doing?

Have a good day ladies!

good morning... I hope to be a regular poster. I've been posting on another site but it's dwindled down to "me", and that's no fun.

I'm a regular exerciser (cardio) for 35+ years. I don't remember ?? when I started. My husband and I hike, backpack, xc ski, snowshoe, bike- road and mountain. At home we have a treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike, a weight machine, and assorted free weights. I go to yoga class once a week.

I'm doing weight training now because of cathe. I used to watch her program on FitTV and think it was way too hard , but tried and found out it wasn't! I refer to cathe as "the goddess".. I got thru half of STS in spring until I needed surgery... that stopped things for a while. I'm back into weights for 3 weeks and plan to start STS again as soon as I'm ready. doing GS to get primed.

Sunday I did 15 min on the bike, 20 on the treadmill, 20 on the elliptical, and #2 coremax.

I try to mix things up without spending too long on one activity. IMO people can get imbalanced from doing only one thing long term, something my husband found out the hard way.

Today, we're getting major grading done .. I may or may not get in a workout today. If all goes well, yes, but when does construction ever all go well??

Thanks for letting me join in.

Hi Ladies,

Welcome Valerie! No wo for me today. My Friday event went well and the food was very good I did enjoy myself even though there was no dancing.

My DF is going to led me a trainer for my bike, it's a stand that will make my bike a stationary bike so that I can practice clipping and unclipping my shoes. She said that this is how she trained before she even went out on the street. I'm glad that I mentioned this to her before I went out to the parking lot.

Valerie, I hope that you can give me some tips on road biking. I will be doing the Aids Life cycle ride from San Francisco to LA in June and I need all the help I can get.

Garance, how was your event?

Deb, I hope that you can get back on track; it is so hard to get back on once you have fallen off the wagon.

Joan, I feel so bad for you DM, I hope that she is doing better.

Cathy, take care of that back and don't be picking up those grandkids.

Have a great day ladies!

Josie

Hi Ladies,

It is me again. I forgot to tell you that I ended up buying a gown after all. You can go to BCBG.com and look at the strapless layered dress in black. I got a 30% discount and it fit so well. My DH loved it and I got a lot of complements.

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and welcome Valerie--

This morning I did the all-cardio premix on LIC (48.5 min.). I needed a relatively short cardio because I had a teeth-cleaning appointment. Boy, this young woman is THOROUGH! She works on my teeth like she's digging for treasure.

Valerie, it's nice to have another over 60 on this thread. I think, up until now, I was the only one (the Beyond!). On Nov. 15 I will be 63, and I have been exercising seriously for about 35 years--started with jogging, moved on to Jane Fonda and others, then Cathe and others.

Deb, the Italian dinner went for 2400 dollars, but it was a "cabal" of 4 couples. Still seems a bit steep to me. I stopped at 600. The event was fun, but very noisy. The food was superb and I enjoyed a bit of dancing.

Cathy, was it the plyo legs from STS that got to you? How is your sister doing?

Ooh, Josie--I will have to go see the gown. I wore a Komarov dress in black and white very crinkly silk and my Bodenusa.com black velvet coat.

Hi ladies,

Welcome Valerie. Unfortunately I have been an intermittent exerciser so I have at least 35-40lbs to lose I only started seriously last November.

I finally got some exercise in- STS disc 19 of meso 2.

Josie the dress is great. I am green with envy. As you can see from the ticker I have gained weight and don't look good in anything. Ticker didn't change- I am only down 5lbs from start last year.

I did log in my food and ate a little over 1400 calories today. It's a start.

Mother's radiation is supposed to be Wednesday or Thursday.

Good morning all,

Today I did a 30 minute I-Tread and the triceps from STS. Had a tougher time today because I forgot my STOK shot of espresso before working out.

Valerie, where do you live? What type of grading are you doing? I always want to try using different cardio equipment but always go back to the treadmill for some reason. It's the only one I find myself able to consistently do.

Josie, is there some trick to clipping or unclipping the shoes for the bike that you need to practice on a stand? I guess I never really knew many details of long distance bike riding. It sounds interesting. I tried looking for the gown but did not know which one it was. I bet you looked great!

Garance, I like getting my teeth cleaned like that...sometimes DH is too gentle. Not sure if he is with all or just me. Good idea for a bunch of people to go in together on that dinner, but wow, $2400 seems like a lot of money.

Joan, which food log are you using? You may have mentioned before but I don't remember. 1400-1600 should be a good range, especially if you are working out to Cathe and doing STS. Are you still using that device that you wear all day to measure calories? I saw a thread over on the Open forum about them. They are getting popular.

It was almost 68 degrees yesterday, I sure wish it would stay like this...I must be dreaming...

have a good day!

I live in washington state, north of seattle. It's the rainy season here for sure. we had two big cedars cut down and a total of 5 stumps removed next to the driveway. the driveway is being graveled and re-graded yesterday and today. we bought a new truck/camper late this summer and needed room to maneuver. It was always tight but we need to take the camper off the truck and park it for the winter and had no room. fairly expensive project and beyond what we could do ourselves. It's looks good though, and shoud be done today.

Josie I've never done a real long bike ride like you're talking about. I've done lots of 30-50 mile rides. I don't use toe clips, just slide in baskets. Never owned bike shoes, wear tennies. so maybe I'm not a serious bicyclist... but I will say.. make sure your bike seat is comfortable. the newer ones with the cut outs help a lot. good padded shorts. I like Terry shorts although I can't stand how I look in them. I am not one fo the minuscule number of people who look good in bike shorts. chamois butter is helpful for friction.

Yesterday was a baseline day, warmed up on the stationary bike for 15 minutes and then ran on the treadmill for 30 minutes. too many errands and interruptions.

Garance it's great to have someone "my" age. I 've been a runner, hiker and skier mostly, never could do anything dance- like. even little bits of step workouts defeat me totally. treadmill and elliptical keep me in shape for doing what I really like to do.

I watch my diet pretty carefully... just don't burn those calories like I used to..... no big surprise to anyone over 50, I guess. I have to work out an incredible amount to lose after gaining so I focus on keeping my diet pretty clean and not gaining.. Eat lots of vegies ... we eat a mostly vegetarian diet although we include a little chicken and fish these days. sometimes that's the best available choice so I try to be reasonable about it.

I'm planning on restarting STS soon and hope building a little more muscle will make the food choices more forgiving.

Hi Ladies,

Today is a Kevin wo plus 30 minutes of cardio. I have been getting compliments as to how thin I look, but I have not lost anymore weight, I'm still at 165. I had lost 2 pounds and gained it back. I guess the toning is finally showing.

Valerie, I had my bike fitted for my body and the seat feels great. I bought knickers instead of the shorts, I don't like shorts either, but they have come a long way and the knickers don't feel like I'm wearing a pamper. I know all about the chamois butter, I used to be a marathon runner and used body glide for the chaffing.

Deb, I use clips for my spinning class, but the clips on my new bike are different and the spinning bike is a stationary bike and it is different riding outside. I need to learn how to unclip when I'm getting to a traffic light or at a stop sign or making a sudden stop.

Garance, are you going to stop doing physique 57?

Joan, the weight will come off once you stop taking care of so many other people. You have been very stressed and that usually makes us gain.

Hi Cathy,

Have a great day ladies!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did disk 5 (58 min.).

Josie, I looked at that dress and wondered how tall are you? I am only 5' 3" so there is no way I could wear that dress unless I had 5" heels, in which case I could not walk or dance without killing myself. I would definitely have to have it altered, but a very va-va-va-voom dress! I would probably have to get some kind of bra to fill it out as well!

Valerie, I really like step workouts with choreography--not too much impact anymore, but somewhat dancy. Love to dance, always have. DH humors me and we do some ballroom dancing in the winter.

Nope, Josie, not giving up on Physique 57 for legs. I am not doing the STS legs disks and substituting Physique 57. I am also thinking of getting another barre workout from Collage.

Deb, it was warm here as well the last two days and pretty mild today as well. Sounds like it won't be too bad for my birthday either. I usually think of November as "the cruellest month" because it's dark, dreary, and drizzly.

Joan, don't be too hard on yourself. You have been doing so much for others that you deserve praise for losing 5 lbs. I agree with Valerie--it's tough getting those pounds off and keeping them off. You might want to try South Beach. When my weight went up to 150, I went on it, and dropped 14 lbs. I am about 135 these days. I'm trying to stay there without too much deprivation.

Hi to Cathy!!

Hi Garance,

I'm 5'6" and my heels were about 4 inches high. I'm used to wearing high heels and wear them every day and can't dance without them. I wore a simple strapless bra with the dress and did not have to adjust it at all. I'm not very big on top.

Josie

hi everyone, been awol. did not workout all weekend or monday. had the grandkids and we rode and were outside all day yesterday. today i did the firm's aerobic body shaping. and , man, i felt like my whole body was made of lead. don't get it. i took 3 days off and i am wore out. but, i did it. very tired tonite, gonna go to bed early, so ttyl.

Hump Day!

Good morning!

Today I did the Leg workout from STS meso 2 Week 1. I skipped the last paper plate exercise because my knee was starting to feel it and that is the last thing I need. Otherwise it was pretty good.

Valerie, my SIL lives in Seattle. Your project sounds like it was a pretty big endeavor. What is a "baseline day"? Have you done a round of STS yet or is this your first?

Josie, would love to see a pic of you all dressed and on your bike! Maybe you can get someone to take it and you could post it here?

Garance, I would love to weigh 135. My goal is 125, but I have a way to go. The first 4 weeks of Southbeach was way too restrictive for me. I love milk and cereal too much. YOu are still doing meso 1 right?

Cathy, with grandkids and all, I can see how you would be tired..how old are they?

Tonight is agility class with Keegan, and I have to keep talking myself into going.

Have a good day!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Gay Gasper's All-Out Infused Step, the 54 min premix. I like this premix because it doesn't repeat all of the step routines for 2 final times. Not as boring.

I made another big batch of Roasted Garlic Soup with Parmesan Cheese (from epicurious.com). One of DH's wood customers gave us an enormous box of garlic and I thought it would be nice to give him some homemade soup. He's rather eccentric and hermit-like. This soup is absolutely scrumptious. You roast 26 cloves of garlic with their skins on and then when making the soup, you throw in 18 more raw cloves and cook them until they are soft. It's actually kind of sweet and creamy when it is all done and put through the food processor.

I just started STS again, Deb, so I am definitely in meso 1. I'm just not doing STS legs and substituting Physique 57. Take care with that knee. I didn't particularly like those paper plate exercises either. I probably did not slide low enough on them to really have an impact. I am reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and thought you might like it because it sometimes tells the story through a dog's p.o.v. I am enjoying it a lot. My vet friend insisted I read it. (Aside to Cathy: Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley is really funny and a lot of horses figure in the narrative.)

Josie, I am really impressed. My highest heels are three inches. I know what you mean, though, about dancing in heels. Deb wants to see you in your biker togs, but I want to see you in that dress and heels!

Valerie, our driveway is about a quarter mile long and runs downhill. It is a constant source of anguish for dh, who is either dragging it, creating water bars, or hauling gravel.

Hi to Joan and Cathy!

yes garance, i went too heavy on the squats. my sis is better, cuz she is on tons of meds. she went home saturday. but , it will happen again. my brother keeps telling her she is gonna have to have her colon out, (which he has had done). but she doesn't want a bag. so, she probably will have too , though. this was a really bad flare -up.

today i did the firm's cardio core fusion. great workout. lots of different moves and lots of core work. going outside to plant my fall flowers. :)
