Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/8

Good evening all,

Yesterday was a good eating day of just under 1400 calories and I did Step Works. I have never done that one before. But other than that it was a terrible day.

Warning complaints ahead.:( I feel like I am catching something again and have a terrible cough. Dil had a slight fever of 101 and took Monday and Tuesday off. Tuesday she brings Elliot over at 9:30, that is only 3 hours before her nap time. I know Monday dil didn't feel well but Tuesday she sure looked better than me. She doesn't pick her up until 4:15 and yells at me because I haven't made Elliot sit on potty. "Don't I ever make her (Elliot) do anything around here". In my defense Elliot has not had one accident in the week and two days since we started potty training at my house. I let her tell me when she has to go potty. Then she picked up Elliot and stormed out of the house. I don't feel like I can say anything or I won't see Elliot and I don't really want my son to be drawn in to the argument.

Complaint part 2:( Db took dm to doctor last Friday and they told me radiation would start Wed or Thur. I don't know who misunderstood but when I called today I was told they were only going to call on Wed or Thur and radiation won't start until Nov 17. When you count up 28 days(not counting Thanksgiving or that Friday), radiation ends Dec 29. That is the day we fly to Las Vegas for New Year's. I can find some one to take her but I was told it would end on the 21st or 22nd and thought I had a week to see she was ok before I left.

Complaint part 3:( I keep all important papers in a fireproof safe. Dh has one stock certificate that he kept in his dresser. Why I don't know. That company has been bought by Pfizer and we have to turn in certificate to receive payment. Dh can't find certificate and it will cost $3000 to get bond so we can get payment without cert.

Today's eating was over 2100 calories and no wo and I have a headache.

Deb I'm still using Cathe's nutrition software. I bought the full year.

Thursday

Good Morning,

I just finished an I-Tread and the back workout from STS Meso 2 week 1. whew, I am fried. Last day of the week for me, I took tomorrow off. I am finding that I have trouble working 5 days in a row now. I think after almost 37 years at this place it is getting really old. ( along with me!)

Garance, I will look for that book. Your soup sounds delicious, but a lot of work! I have another bid in for the Physique workout, we'll see what happens this time.

Cathy, glad your sister is doing better, my grandfather had that surgery. This was about 40 years ago and he was so embarrassed about it. I remember how all the adults were so hush-hush about it.

Joan, ((HUGS)) , sorry you are going through such a tough time right now. You can come here any time and put all your "complaints" down for us. Would your DIL really not let you see Elliot? It seems like she is pretty dependent on you and would be dumb to pull that. Did you tell her that you have Elliot telling you when she has to go and no accidents? What part of "success" in this does she not get? As for DH losing the certificate, happens here all the time, I get "accused" of throwing things out when he can't find something...then when he finds it, it's all sheepish looks etc. I hope you can find it though, that sounds awfully expensive to replace.

Hi to Josie, our bike queen....get the pics here girl!

Valerie, what are you up to today?

Have a good one...

good morning..

Apologies, it will take a while to get to "know" everyone here and what's going on in your lives. so I don't intend to ignore anyone but it takes a while to learn who does what, etc.

garance, we have a long steep uphill driveway. it would be nice to get asphalt and get to stop rearranging gravel but when it gets icy it would be impossible to get up, and waaay too fast coming down so yes, I can relate ... we shovel gravel up and down and try to keep it smooth. water runs downhill off of it, we need to be aggressive keeping drains clear! we had the driveway turnaround enlarged so we could park the camper easily. also better for truck deliveries like UPS. Gravel gets churned up especially if trucks need to back up the hill.

fox2 star, my "baseline" is an hour of cardio, some combo of treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike. I've been getting in 3 weight workouts a week and usually do 20 min of cardio those days. I skip the next day cardio when we do a long a several hour activity like hike, ski or showshoe.
I'm trying to get primed to restart STS. I got up to disk 19 ...Joan, I was doing really well up to then ... and then had surgery on my left shoulder area( more about that later on)... couldn't raise my arm above shoulder level for 2 months. then I unexpectedly got a DVT near the surgery site (due to pressure from a pack strap) so another 6 week layoff of upper body work. all seems OK now so I've eased back into upper body stuff the last month doing mostly GS series. I'm going to restart STS soon but didn't want to over-do and get too sore after such a long layoff.

I am a pathetic failure at step aerobics. even a little bit of step frustrates me, just can't do it. I'm trying to remember if there's a little section in Drillmax? I simply can't do it, my feet get all confused, my arms get confused, it's hopeless. Not a dancer, no, not at all.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did the 30 minute Physique 57 for legs and abs and 2 miles with Leslie with my 10 lb. vest.

Deb, I have never had a job like your's. When I am teaching it's two classes per semester and they meet twice a week for 75 min. It's the grading, the preparations, the committees, and of course, the scholarship that are time-consuming and at times, tedious. I think I could go on teaching forever if I didn't have to grade papers anymore.

Joan, I cannot imagine having a daughter-in-law like that. I mean--what the h--- would she do without you? Would she really go out and find a babysitter to pay or an expensive nanny to follow her orders? I'm guessing, like Deb, that she relies on you way too much to do that. I don't have any advice because I wouldn't put up with it. It sounds like you are caught between a rock and a hard place on those radiation appointments. Is it possible to change your flight plans?

Cathy, I can understand why your sister resists the surgery, but maybe someone who has had a colostomy and is living with it successfully could talk to her. It must be better than the pain. I remember Kathie Lee Gifford talking about her younger sister having a colostomy, and whenever I saw her I thought she looked quite beautiful--married, children, active, a singer.

Valerie, it sounds like you have the same issues with your driveway as we do. DH does a good job keeping up with it, though. He has tons of equipment--tractors, trucks, bucketloaders, etc. so that eases the annoyance, but it is tiresome for him.

Hi to Josie!

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not posting yesterday, but I had the day off. I will be working out with Kevin tonight and doing my cardio. On Tuesday I ran for 20 minutes and I was so sore yesterday, so I will be running again this evening for 30 minutes.

Joan, my dil sounds like yours, but I know that she needs me more that I need her and my grandkids love me very much and like to be with me. So, when she starts to act up I just tell her to do what ever she wants and before you know it she is calling me for help.
Don't worry about venting, we all do that at one time or another.

Cathy, taking care of kids is a workout in itself. I would call that Babysitting Max.

Deb, I will post some pictures as soon as my DD takes some.

Hi Valerie & Garance

Josie

garance, my brother has had the surgery and he has told her. you can't even tell he has a bag. i always forget.

LOL! i like that name, josie. can we make it an official workout?

i did super charged sculpting today. 40m. weight workout from the firm. had a busy day, so squeezed it in. tomorrow is another grandbaby day.:)

Friday

Hi all,

I am so glad I took off today and yesterday aftenoon. I needed a break. I did a 30 minute I-Tread plus the Biceps from STS. I then went to my cousins to help her move stuff around, she just moved into a new house and she hurt her shoulder, cannot lift etc. Then to the vacuumm store to get parts for an old Kirby I have. It is still not picking up well....ugh. I have a newer one but it weighs about 50 pounds and is hard to get up and down the stairs.

Valerie, your baseline sounds tough! I'm with you on the step workouts. I have a hard time with any Cathe ones because she has complicated steps. I like straight forward athletic ones. I used to like the ones by Gin Miller.

Garance, don't they have assistant professors to grade papers?

Hi to Josie & Cathy!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did KCM's double kickbox (53 min.).

No, Deb, at small liberal arts colleges, all professors do their own grading. You must be thinking of graduate institutions where graduate students are hired to do the grading for professors. Williams prides itself on the close contact between students and professors and relatively small classes. Big lecture classes are rare.

DH and I are going out with friends tonight to celebrate my birthday on Sunday. A highly recommended Italian place we have never been to. I have already gone out to lunch with one of my former students today, so I better not order too much--or else bring a lot of it home.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Hi Ladies,

No wo for me today. I started running again on the treadmill and it feel great, but I'm so sore even with all of the other cardio. I will be taking my parents to a concert tonight and plan to have a great dinner at Universal

Deb, sometimes all you need is a day off to re-energize yourself.

Garance, have a happy, happy birthday! Don't forget to have a Manhattan for you and one for me.

Cathy, yes we can have it as an official workout. Deb and Garance call house work house max.

Joan, how are you and how is your dm.

Hi Valerie!

Josie

Hello all;

checking in .... did GS legs this morning, almost the entire thing. there's one floor move I can't finish the reps on yet, and I ran out of time and skipped the last exercise. I did the entire GS legs for the first time 10 days ago and it took this long before I was willing to even look at it again. I've done the standing portion several times but the floor moves are absolute killers. upped my weights for several things too. I still have time today so I'm going to try to squeeze in GS chest triceps before getting dinner started.

Usually don't do two weight workouts in a day but I had a couple light days this week so i can probably do it.

Hi Valerie, Josie, Deb, Garance and Cathy,

Valerie, A little background. I am 58 and will be 59 in January. I am married and have 2 grown sons. The youngest is a photographer and lives in Portland, OR. Other son, dil and Elliot live near us in St Peters MO(near St. Louis) I am a self-employed CPA with my busiest time during "tax season" The rest of the year I babysit grandaughter from 7:30 until 4:30 and do my accounting business in the evening. Some days I do better than other days getting in a wo.

Deb I doubt that she would not let me see Elliot but she could make life difficult for ds and me. She has tried to be nicer the last two days. I've mentioned before that I clean their house on Fridays and also do 4-6 loads of their wash. When I started that it was because ds was overwhelmed. Dil had nerve to say that I wasn't doing anything to help her because those were ds jobs. She might have been kidding but I'm really not sure. Not about those being ds jobs because he did take it all on when she got pregnant. Before they spit housework. Thank heavens she is better when she is not pregnant.

Josie Dm is still very sore from a week ago. They made her hold her arms above her head with head tilted. It hurt her right arm (opposite from mastectomy) It wasn't the joint but the muscle between shoulder and elbow. The radiation is not going to start until Tuesday. I'm glad I can vent here. I think if I would let myself blow up at her at that moment I would say things I couldn't take back. Usually by the time I finish typing here I feel a lot better.

Garance I can find someone to take dm to radiation for the 1 day. I just wanted a week without radiation before I left her. The airfare was "just" $1000. If I leave a day later it was a lot more. I'm going to be selfish and take a break before w-2's and year end work in January. My brother and son can stop by every day and I will call.

Joan

Saturday

Good Morning!

Today is a rest day for me, it's HouseMax day. I did a lot around here yesterday being off so I had a head start. I did about 2/3 of the grout in the kitchen floor tile. It's a long process. The cleaner has to stay on the floor for 30 minutes, and you can only do a section at a time.

Agility class for Keegan this morning, then errands.

Garance, how was your birthday dinner?

Josie, do you run to music on an MP3 player?

Valerie, wow 2 GS workouts in a day is a lot! I hope you are not too sore to enjoy the weekend. I always skipped the floor exercises on that one too. I am 56, live in Buffalo NY, with DH, 2 dogs and a parrot, no kids.

Joan, I am glad you figured out a way to work the Vegas trip. I know you wanted to be with your Mom for a week before you went but you really deserve the break. These breaks are not only for you, but for end up being good in the long run for your Mom too, because by getting a break you will be able to handle whatever she needs when you get back, with more patience.

Cathy what are you up to today?

Hope eveyone is having a good weekend.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

Housemax for me today. Perfect morning to sleep in--the sound of rain always makes me want to go under the covers.

We went to a really fine Italian restaurant last night and I had scallopini sorrentina--scallops of pork with mozzarella, basil, and a lovely wine sauce and some veggies on the side and an arugula salad. A fruit bombe covered in white chocolate for dessert with a little glass of sambuco. Everyone's meal was delicious. I think we will go there again.

Deb, what are you using to clean your tiles? Do you have to seal it afterwards? I could never find anything that worked, so DH sanded the grout to remove the goop.

As far as I'm concerned, Joan, you're a candidate for sainthood. I cannot imagine expecting my MIL to do laundry or clean my house when I was pregnant. I was working full time, but with DH's help, we managed fine. It sounds like you are also trying to help out your son. I agree with Deb--you need a vacation before the onslaught of tax season.

Valerie, I am on sabbatical currently, but I will head back to the classroom come February. I am currently writing a book on Ted Hughes, husband to poet Sylvia Plath. I wrote 2 books about her and became interested in him after he published Birthday Letters about their marriage. It was published shortly before his death in 1998. I teach at Williams College in western Massachusetts, the Berkshires. Two grown sons, one of them in Boston, the other in California with his fiancee. DH is a farmer, raises grass-fed beef, pork, and for us, chickens, also sells wood and hay, and is a soccer referee over in NY during the fall.

Hi to any posters who show up today!
