Good morning and welcome to DST! ( I think),

Depending on where you are, you may have turned the clocks back last night. We did here. I spent the "extra hour" at 1:30 cleaing up after a dog that drank way too much water yesterday, and could not hold it. He also, for some reason did not make any noise to wake us up in time to take him out..

Anyway, I plan to start week 2 of the Couch to 5K workouts on the treadmill and 4DS chest & back.

What's up for everyone today?

Cold and raining here too.

we'd hoped to do a camping trip this weekend but it's too dismal to waste the gasoline. possibly later today if it clears we may do a shorter local trip. ordered a new laundry room sink and countertop yesterday and a new faucet. should be here in 2 weeks or so. we've redone the whole room , laundry and a 1/2 bath. it's nicer and more functional. did all the work ourselves so maybe $1200 total. appliances didn't need replacing.

Deb the style of yoga is called "yin ". you get into a stretching position often leaning or lying on a bolster and hold it for several minutes. It was pleasant but I'm fairly flexible in the spine. when we work on hips I will be groaning, I'm pretty tight there. not strength based or athletic but long easy stretchs. quite pleasant and different. I know one lady in the class and she's quite good at regular yoga... I WISH I had her skills... but this style she finds very difficult. It's not like getting into warrior and holding for 15 min! May do disk 7 today and a little cardio if it doesn't dry out enough to ride.

oh my, copious dog pee doesn't improve the attitude in the early morning hours. Hope it's at least in a hard floor area.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Drill Max upper body premix (60 min.).

NYC was fun, and the Plath event at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine was very interesting. Some of the readings were ......... well, strange, to say the least, and there was a musical performance of three poems that almost made me take flight--very John Cage like with a screechy soprano singing the poems, and definitely not my favorite ones. The reception was fun, though, and I enjoyed spending time with my friends and eating out at some great restaurants. Glad I came back yesterday, though, because the NYC Marathon tends to tangle traffic up something awful, and I would have been in a taxi headed to Penn Station.

Deb, that's too bad about Keegan. Why did he drink so much water? Max sleeps in his crate and gets up with DH about 5. Never makes a sound unless he's dreaming. According to DH, Max was "depressed" about my absence. He sure was overjoyed at my return. Nothing like a dog to make you feel loved!! We went out to dinner last night when I got back. Coq au vin and a spinach and pear salad. Yummy! Had Thai and Chinese food in NYC. Nice and spicy.

Thoroughly enjoyed my extra hour of sleep.

hey all, well, no baby yet, possibly tonite. if so, w/outs may be sporadic this week. but, i probably need a week off anyway, i've been incredibly tired lately.

well, we have had the most beautiful weather, cool and sunny. went to the park with the kids on friday, rode horses yesterday. this is why we live in texas. for sure, not for the summers.

well, if i don't get back it is because i have grandchildren.:)

Monday

Good morning,

Today I did 4DS legs, I skipped the very long KB warm up and just used the first light set as a warm up. 11 minutes of KB is way too much for a warm up, imo anyway. I forgot to "click" the start button on my HRM so was kind of Pi**ed off when I saw that. Oh wel...

Valerie, I bet it makes you feel better about doing laundry with a new room! ( or NOt?) LOL.. That yoga sounds interesting, I had never heard of it. No, Keegan hit all the rugs upstairs...we have this really good enzyme cleaner, it prevents stains and removes smells. You wouldn't even know anything happened. it was just doing all that at 1:30 am. We gave him some rawhide bone from the supermarket, and he was guzzleing water all day, it must have had a lot of salt in it. Hence, his problem. He was fine yesterday.

Garance, one nice thing about NYC, great food if you know where to go. I would have to depend on whoever was with me, since I do not know NY at all. Have only been there a few times for work. I did go to dinner that once and found a cockroach in my rice.....the waiter whipped the dish away, but did not seem very surprised. This was a nice restaurant too. I guess it's not uncommon there.

Cathy, let us know when the "little one" arrives!

Hi to Joan & Josie,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Bootcamp Boogie (63 min.).

Ugh--winter here! Snow, sleet, and freezing rain, but the promise of a better week ahead. I know T.S. Eliot said "April is the cruellest month," but I personally regard November as worthy of that title.

I should resurrect 4ds for a week maybe, just to do more variable workouts. I feel a little stuck on the same ones lately. I've been thinking of buying Rockin' Models and Atletica--both from Mary at totalfitnessdvds.com.

Cathy, now you get to gloat about your fine weather while we northerners suffer. Do you know whether it will be a boy or a girl?

Deb, the restaurant scene is constantly changing in NYC, but there are a few that seem to be going on forever. Molyvos and Le Boeuf a la Mode are high end but absolutely terrific restaurants--Greek and French. Both family-owned I believe.

Hi to Josie, Valerie, and Joan!

today i did (the firm) cardio split, lower body, and 1 set of a LB challenge from the firm rotation, which was VERY HARD!!! reminds me very much of jen carman's killer workouts!

yesterday i did fat blaster and used the incline for all the step and 5's & 7's for 4-limb.

still waiting for grandbaby #4, the due date is tomorrow, and my dil is sooo ready for this baby to come out. so, if i'm awol the rest of the week, it is cuz i have the g/kids here.

have a nice week!

Tuesday

Good morning,

C25K done for today. It was a little tough today because of doing the 4DS leg workout yesterday. My legs felt like they were weighed down. Cathe announced that the DVD's were almost ready, they may be shipping soon. I am ready for something new in weight workouts. Even though this will be similar to STS, I can do the full one on Sunday, then the upper and lower pre-mixes during the week.

Garance, I never heard of those workouts, I should spend some time over at videofitness. Not that I need to buy any more workouts. We are supposed to have temps up to 60 this week too, then cold again on the weekend.

Cathy, isn't the waiting the hardest part?

Hi to Joan, Valerie, & Josie,

Take care,

Had an unexpectedly nice day yesterday. we wanted to mt bike but it was raining hard in the morning as it had been much of the night. got organized to go the night before so when the rain stopped and it seemed to be clearing, we headed to a new park, about an hour plus away. partway there more heavy rain and thought we were wasting our time but kept going and amazed when it cleared nicely. a lovely park, excellent camping, and very "coastal" lots of huge rhodies and madrona trees and dense (salal) low brush. very northwest-y , the trails were excellent. not too difficult but not roads either. road for 3 hours with a lunch break overlooking the water and olympics mountains. can see all the way to Victoria BC from there across the sound. lots of history there too, from the first settlers in 1850 to gun batteries left from WWII. sunny and mid 50's, very pleasant. didn't crash at all though, I had to push my bike up and down a few hills. takes a little riding to get warmed up and reminded how to do it. the only downside is a naval air base close byand when the skies clear the military jets do lots of touch and go landings that are loud LOUD. it would be quieter on a cloudy day.

Deb like many , we come in the house from the garage so the laundry room is our usual "entrance" and it needed spiffing up with easier surfaces. DH uses the sink from the garage, and things get dropped there first. can't wait for the new sink and countertop. It gets hard use so don't know how long it will look good but the old sink was hopeless.

wow, you have a bunch of workouts I've never heard of. I'm waiting on cathe's new ones. wanted them for DH's birthday saturday but doesn't sound like it will happen. going to try a new yoga class this morning at (OMG) 7 am. the 9:00 class was way too crowded. a some workout after yoga after I see how hard a class this is.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Ellen Barrett's Slim Sculpt (45 min.).

Deb, thanks for that dog story. My friend has a daughter she adopted from Colombia and I still remember her visiting and watching Mr. Rogers with complete attention. DH said, "I could never get into watching him because he's too nice." The 8-year-old girl responded, sternly, "You can never be too nice." That put him in his place! Of course, my sons never watched him. They were too rambunctious and could barely sit still for Sesame Street.

Valerie, my birthday is coming up next week--64. Blech! Another reason why November is the cruellest month. Weather is still pretty ugly here. No sun, drizzly and cold.

Cathy, do you do all Firms? My sons were both late--2 weeks for the first, and 3 weeks for the second. They were also pretty big--almost 9 lbs for the first and almost 10 for the second. I was more than ready to get them OUT! When I had Braxton-Hicks (sp?) contractions, I felt like a tidal wave was moving from side to side.

Hi to Josie and Joan, wherever you are.

Deb, I don't want to sound like a sheltered primadonna but a cockroach in the food on your plate??? Holy cr@p. I GUESS the plate would get wisked away quickly. I've never seen a cockroach in my life so I wouldn't recognize one, but any large insect would look "out of place". the worst I ever had was a stone in some beans at a mexican place. I didn't bite down so it wasn't a dental disaster but they still comped the meal for both of us.

Lynda, DH's birthday is Nov and he hates the month, for similar reasons. Me, I think December is worst. It's dark. it's wet. It feels like it will never be light for more than a few hours ever again. and I get so so tired of the christmas hype, even before it starts.

My neighbor's hysterectomy went very well. she could not believe how good she felt right away, and drove to the store about 5 days later. she's taking it easy but it was WAY less difficult than she imagined.
Yoga went well this morning though early. I'm going to go to 2 classes a week from now on. It costs almost the same as one class was costing.

Hi Ladies,

I spent the weekend with one of my DB's. He lives in Palm Springs and the weather was beautiful in the mid 80's. I went there to volunteer for the Aids Life Cycle 10. Since I'm not riding next year, I want to volunteer and help them recruit new riders.

I will be doing my weights and cardio tonight and spinning tomorrow. Our office will be closed on Thursday and Friday, so I will have a long weekend. I will be picking up my grandkids on Thursday and they will be here until Sunday. I can't wait!

Garance, Happy early birthday! My grandkids birthdays are the 14th and 29th and my DD is the 24th.

Cathy, any baby news yet?

Hi Joan and Valerie!

Josie

Wednesday

Good morning,

Today I did the Biceps & Triceps from 4DS. Still waiting for the "warm" weather this week.

Valerie, "C25K" is the short version of "Couch to 5K" running program. It's a 12 week progressive program where you slowly advance to runing 5k in 30 minutes. You can find a lot about it here: www.coolrunning.com. 4DS is Cathe's 4 Day Split series. Regarding the cockroach, I was a little perturbed that they didn't waive the cost of the meal of the other person I was with, seeing that he sat there and starred at it until they came and took my plate away... worst part was, it was in the wild rice, and I had already eaten half of it. The restaurant had really dim lighting, hard to see the food.

Garance, yes , it did my heart good to see that there are some nice people still around. Happy Birthday ( early)...

Josie, why are you not riding next year?

Hi to Joan, & Cathy,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.).

Deb, the new problem in NYC (as if they needed any more) is bedbugs. Even in the best hotels, in theaters and schools. It's still pretty cold here, although they keep promising some high 50s.

Josie, I can understand why you might not want to do all that training for the bike ride again. It sounds like you have a great weekend ahead with the grandkids. My birthday is on the 15th. We will be going out on Saturday night though. If you do get a copy of that More mag with the soups, I have to say, they are all good. I'm on the third one now--the peanut soup. Really yummy.

Valerie, I had a partial hysterectomy by laparoscopy, and was fine within a couple days, and exercising within a week.

Hi to Joan and Cathy!

Hi Ladies,

I wish it was 3:00 PM! I'm looking forward to my long weekend. I will be spinning tonight for one hour.

Deb and Garance, I don't plan on doing the ride next year because I want to give my sponsors a break. I still plan on volunteering my time to recruit new riders and I still plan on training with them for some of the beautiful rides that are coming up in the spring.
My DD and I plan on riding together in 2012 and the minimum that we need to raise between the two of us is $6,000 plus her equipment.

Hi to Valerie, Joan and Cathy.

Thursday

037.gif

I tried to sleep in today, very tired..DH had a late board meeting last night, so of course I woke up when he came in, and Keegan woke us both up at 4:00. DH took him outside, stayed downstairs, and Kelsey woke me up at 5:00..yawn..

Garance, yes, I read about the problem with bed bugs now in hotels. I didn't even think about it when we were in DC at the Ritz, until we got home and DH mentioned it. I was glad he didn't bring it up while we were there, or I would have been looking around all the time. Where are you going for dinner for your birthday? what type of food?

Josie, I agree, I can see why you would skip the ride part for a year, but want to still be involved with the whole aspect. It is such a good thing.

Hi to Valerie, Joan, and Cathy,

Take care,

Did yoga tuesday morning and later in the day did sts disk 7. holy cow. pushups and more pushups. I can't begin to do them all but did what I could.

yesterday it was clear and beautiful, a surprise, so went on a hike/snowshoe. started with a dusting of snow and rapidly progressed to 3 feet with lots of snow bombs falling out of the trees. we were there early, boots until it got too deep and then snowshoes. took us about 3 hours to get to a viewpoint. then along came 3 twenty-somethings following our trail. they (fairly noisily) went a short distance past where we'd settled down for lunch, thanking us for breaking the trail. they left pretty quickly cause they didn't have enough warm clothes. when we got back to our car a couple hours later they'd build 2 snowmen in front of our car and put a snow heart on the windshield. very cute! guess they appreciated all the work we did breaking the trail.

I've read about the bedbug problem. kind of like head lice, thought it was something we'd gotten past. natural selection at work once again. and with so many people traveling, it's easy to see how it can get out of hand quickly.

so the cockroach chose to camouflage himself hiding in the wild rice! Smart guy! I've never seen one. saw a huge insect on the wall of our condo in Hawaii once time and never located it though we looked high and low. must have been 5 inches long and then disappeared.

Lynda, happy birthday. hope you have a fun one. that particular surgery has come from being a horrid debilitating experience to almost a walk in the park. my mother was in the hospital for about 2 weeks and never could pee right again.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Squeeze (56 min.).

Finally, the sun is out again and a little warmer. Deb, we will be going to a place called Mezze's. I would describe the cuisine as leaning French--or maybe just expensive.

I've just started reading Ken Follett's new saga for the 20th century. I think I will learn a lot of history in addition to enjoying the characters. I loved Pillars of the Earth and World Without End about the Middle Ages in England. It's very good already.

Don't know any veterans, but if any of you do, thank them for me.

Valerie, I keep thinking I should start STS again, but I seem to be doing well on these lighter workouts. Maybe in the new year.

TGIF

Good morning,

No workout again, slept horribly, with another wake up at 3:30 to let a dog out. I am not sure what is going on with these 2 lately. I do know they are both drinking a lot more water than usual, so of course, that means more outings.

Valerie, being in Buffalo, any voluntary trips where there is 3 feet of snow sounds crazy!

Garance, what is the name of the book you are reading? It's fiction though right?

I am so looking forward to the weekend...

Take care,

Deb, that's the nice thing about living here. most years we don't get any snow down at sea level. we can go to the snow, play in it, and come home without massive driving hassles. I don't know if it gets mentioned much in the east but the pacific weather system called La nina is strong this year and that means snow at lower elevations. we had la nina 2 years ago that was horrendous. last yr was el nino which is the opposite, very mild and no snow.

It was incredibly beautiful with all the fresh snow on the peaks and the sunshine. But I know ( lived in the midwest til my 20's) how trying snow is when you deal with it day after day, week after week. you get a lot of lake effect snow, don't you?

How old are your dogs? over weight? dogs can develop diabetes.. more drinking and more peeing. don't want to sound alarmist, they probably are just drinking too much and enjoy flexing their power by getting you up to let them out.

Did 20 on the bike and 25 on the treadmill yesterday. After 6 hours of hiking wed I was tired and achy. need to get back to more treadmill for winter.

Lynda, I think lighter weights give almost as much benefit as heavy ones with much less risk but workouts take longer to do with more reps. endurance workouts take me twice as long. I love the variety with STS but I'm looking forward to meso 2. how's the arm doing? pretty much back to normal?

I was going to do the chicken curry but DH pitched a fit. this is his birthday week so I said OK, no curry. guess I'm going to be a restaurant-only curry person.
