Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/6/2022

Good morning. Today I did Jane Adams Morning Energy yoga for 18 minutes.

Judy, thanks for starting us out today.

Valerie, I hope that your power is restored soon.

Hello to Diane Sue, Cathy, and Lori.

No workout yesterday as I didn't sleep well. This morning I did Express Your Step, which is a long step routine, some IMAX type stuff and then an ab stacker that pretty much is the same as from Step Boss. Our power went out about 4:30 yesterday for three hours. At least it was light for most of it. Winds were totally crazy. At least one apartment building in Lansing lost part of its roof. Neighbors pump fried when they had a power surge after their generator was shut off so they'll be getting water from us till it's fixed.

Hi to all!

I'm back. judy thanks for jumping in and getting us started.
power out since friday night at 9:30. I was reading in bed when it went out as the wind started to howl. storm was predicted but it took out power to a whole lot of people. two hundred thousand in this county. this time of year when its dark so long and cold and raining ... its hard to deal with. we have headlamps flashlights, candles, but still not fun. had to toss most of the freezer contents from kitchen fridge. ice machine melt started running out onto the floor so finally had to open the door. garage freezer usually holds up better but I didn't open doors. we started our camper refrigerator (propane) so I bought some things yesterday for dinner. yesterday we cleaned up yard things after the wind but today it was just boredom until power came back on. then a million things to do. somehow it doesnt seem that long when you look at the actual hours, about 40 hours, but we do so little that isn't connected in some way to electric grid that it's a huge wake up call. the switch to standard time tucked in there was not great. Bad timing.

cathy 3 hours is like the "outage" we had a week ago. we worry about power surges when power comes back on, or when it flickers when a tree is bouncing on a power line. I always turn off devices if the power is flickering on and off. two outages a week a part is not a good way to start the cold, dark power out season.
will do a workout and therapy today in a bit.

Just finished Pyramid Pump Upper Body. Three hours is annoying but doable, though I do it far better than my husband. In the past we've had 5 day outages, but thankfully years ago, they updated something, so now they are generally less than a day. The entire state of Michigan had heavy winds the other day which is crazy and we generally have multiple weather patterns. Thankfully I'd just charged my portable charger, so I was able to get my phone back up to 100% since we didn't know how long it would be. DH's work phone is nearly always at 100% because he keeps it on the charger. He is so clueless though about how things work. He wanted to know the Apple password so he could listen to music. It's a work phone and I'm pretty sure that's probably not available and also I'm expected to know his password? The difference between cell service and wifi confuses him and when he initially asked me for the password he asked for the wifi one and I was so confused because the wifi was out. Made him show me what he was trying to do on the phone. It's like trying to explain things to a rock. LOL

This morning I did All Out Low Impact HiiT, Floor and Step Cardio. That was 33 minutes and 228 calories burned. My average heart rate was 133 and maximum heart rate was 151.

Cathy, great job with Express Your Step and Pyramid Pump Upper Body. Power outages are tough, even short ones.

Valerie, I’m sorry about the long power outage. It’s hard to occupy yourself for that length of time. I really hate having to throw food away. It’s good that you have the camper refrigerator for backup.

Hello to Judy, Diane Sue, and Lori. Have a great day everyone.

Did 30 on elliptical and therapy yesterday.

the camper fridge is not an easy alternative. runs on propane, first needs to cool down before moving things. we have a polypro cover over the camper for winter. very hard in /out of the door. plus it's dark, cold windy, and raining. when you open a freezer/fridge door, all the previous cold air is gone so it has to be worth losing that coldness to move some things. there is always the chance it will be a short power out, and by the time you get things ready to move, the power will come back on. Arrgh! not easy. turns out at least half of the county was out of power. some are still not reconnected. none of that information is available at the time, all you know is maybe that you and your close neighbors have lost power, and you send the info to the PUD and hope for the best. texting and internet is now working sporadically but ours is via cable and that line goes out along with electricity. it showed a strong signal this morning but for whatever reason, nothing was working. I can entertain myself for a while reading, doing crosswords, organizing things but after a day it gets pretty old.

we will have a better stretch of weather now but much colder. last year we went to AZ about now and I wish we'd planned something similar this year.

Yesterday was a rest day. I actually got a decent nights sleep in last night.
Today I wanted to get in some of everything since tomorrow will be a rest day. I did CDorner workouts today. I did today's Total Body workout 55 minutes, 156 calories, heart rate 98/131, 927 steps. I then did a Step Aerobics and Kickboxing that she did with another woman, I think Leslie?, who led the kickboxing segments. This was outdoors by a pool and alternated step with kickboxing for 4 segments, 30 minutes, 150 calories, heart rate 123/153,2,623 steps. I finished with her 15 minute lower body stretch heart rate 79/103, 28 calories. I also added some back foam rolling and stretches with Alyssa Khun PT stuff. She has this site on Youtube called Keep the Adventure Alive that deals with arthritis. I just went to her main site and scrolled to back issues. There is lots of info on her site. I did not count that though. She uses different devices. One of these days I will see if I can find a door to hook my trx to and do some of the stuff she has using one. I need to head to bed soon. I am going to get together with my ladies group in the morning.

Total time was 1 hour 40 minutes, 334 calories, 3,550 steps.
CDorner Total Body uses dumbbells only she did not uses the bands mentioned on the site

All moves are done for 1 minute
right side squat/reverse lunge 15# dbs
right side 1 dumbbell reverse lunge /1 leg squat 15# db
right side 15# dbs static reverse lunge/hammer curl

kickbacks 10# dbs
alternating curls 12# dbs
shoulder rotation with bent arms out and in 10# dbs
light weight lateral raise 5# dbs

reach across for leg sit up
oblique knee in
plank knee in and extend leg
repeat on other side

bonus squat press with 5# dbs

Judy, thanks for starting the thread yesterday.

Cathy, I do not like bad weather and the problems that it causes. I do not know why we had no power the other night. My husband works 5 miles away and he said there was no lights on all the way to his work. His work has backup generators so no problem there. I don't really like those Ab Stacker workouts. I did notice that my newer step risers that are black and have the incline risers are a bit heavier than than the old pink ones.

Valerie, sorry you had to deal with a power outage that long. I am just not as prepared for that as I used to be. My battery backup gave out. I need more flashlights. I threw my solar one out because it would not turn on anymore. We do rely on electricity for most everything. I didn't even think about the tankless hot water heater needing to heat the water till one of our outages after we moved in. We have a generator in the garage that has not been used for quite some time. I doubt we have gas sitting out there anywhere since we moved. We don't own a lawnmower anymore. I used a push mower at our other house. So, no need for gas for one. We pay someone to do it. Fortunately, we have the gas fireplace when the power goes out during the winter. My husband has talked about getting a backup generator installed. We have two neighbors that have them on our street.

Carolyn, nice work on All Out Low Impact Hiit.

Just finished Pyramid Pump Lower Body. That one really keeps the heart rate up! DH has the day off as they get even year election days off and he has an appointment and errands to run, so I have the house to myself for a few hours. Trying to figure out what to do for power outages is hard when you can't trust their info. The other day it was still saying they were analyzing the problem when it came back on. Other times they'll say it's on and we'll be like-no it's not. Our energy company has an outage map for everything they cover in Michigan, so I can see how far the outage is, and I can check for my parents when theirs is out. A few months back, I checked for my sister in NC as she was having issues getting on the web.

Valerie great job with the elliptical and PT exercises.

Carolyn nice job with All Out Low Impact HiiT, Floor and Step Cardio.

Diane Sue I have my regular step, the high step and the incline risers, so I ended up with 10 of the regular risers. When I set it up as a bench, I use 5 on each side and it's much better for my back getting up and down. Good job with the Total Body, Step Aerobics and Kickboxing and stretch.

This morning I did STS Total Body, single sets. My time was 60 minutes with 281 calories burned. Average heart rate was 118 and maximum heart rate was 148. I haven’t done this workout in over a year and it was more challenging than usual.

Valerie, nice job with your therapy exercises and elliptical. If you had been traveling during the outage you might have come home to a lot of spoiled food!

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Total Body, Step Aerobics and Kickboxing, and lower body stretch. My next door neighbor has a generator installed and I must admit to being envious a few times when we had long outages. My daughter has one at the house that they bought three years ago and it has served them well.

Cathy, great job with Pyramid Pump Lower Body. That’s a good workout.

Hello to Judy and Lori.

We did a hike this morning, 2 and a half hours at the tree farm where we usually mt bike. it was 32 degrees cold for biking. we can only ride gravel roads until spring when they reopen the trails. walking trails is ok.. so a few miles with a lot of up and down.. we will use it for walking more from now on. nobody else there and quiet on winding paths thru the forest.

usually wind storms are predicted so there is time to get sort of ready. I move some food to the garage fridge. sometimes we turn on the camper fridge and move things out there. when we go to MT I usually empty out the fridge as much as possible before leaving to eliminate the spoiled food situation. we always turn off the ice machine and empty the bin of cubes so we don't get the melt water on the floor. we learned that several years ago when we came home to a failed refrigerator leaking water all over. since then we always empty the bin before leaving. a lot of people have generators. we are going to move towards that too. they arent cheap. having dinner with a neighbor who knows a lot about it on thursday.

it's all well and good the PUD tries to update everyone on the outage but when the power is out the info accuracy online goes downhill quickly. there are still some 20,000 people out of power as of this morning. some are more complicated where a tree fell on a house.
we have flashlights but headlamps are a lot better. I get a set at costco every few years. they aren't expensive but they aren't sturdy either. sometimes batteries leak and ruin the insides. still way less risky than candles and give you hands free..

Yesterday I did a 30 minute Peloton ride, 20 minutes of Peloton strength work and KCM Raw Athletic Stretch #2. The stretch was really good. It felt a lot like Yin Yoga. I will be doing this one regularly.
Today I did a 75 minute Peloton Power Zone ride. It was an 11 minute warm up, 63 minutes of intervals of zone 2 & 3, and 1 minute cool down. It was tough doing intervals for that long.
I'm off work all week and we are getting some painting and home projects done.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams Morning Energy yoga, All Out Low Impact HiiT, Floor and Step Cardio, and STS Total Body, single sets. I should do STS Total Body again. It's been ages since I did that.

Diane Sue-Great job with the CDorner workouts. We really need to get a generator here. It's something we talk about but just haven't followed through with. Maybe this year we will get one.

Valerie-I'm sorry about the long power outage. Great job with the hike.

Cathy-Great job with Pyramid Pump Upper Body and Lower Body. We were lucky not to lose power. Several neighborhoods near us did. I take care of all of the Apple products for my husband and I. He takes care of our Windows based PCs. I do keep track of both of our passwords for everything as he doesn't like doing that.

Hi to Lori

So, I had planned to do kickboxing today, but got up and my legs said NO. Apparently, PP Lower Body really did a number on them. So, then I thought, well I'll have breakfast and then do some step. Stood up after breakfast and was like...maybe not. So I ended up doing Stretch Max with the band and I'll try and get out and walk a few times today. If I wake up early enough tomorrow, I'll do a short cardio.

Carolyn great job with STS Total Body.

Valerie nice that you were able to get in a good hike. Sounds like a good place to go.

Judy good job with the Peloton ride, strength workout and stretch.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix workout one which was 26 minutes and 188 calories burned. My average heart rate was 137 and maximum heart rate was 169.

Valerie, nice job with the 2+ hours walk. You’re right, the generators are not cheap.

Judy, great job with the Peloton rides, Peloton Strength, and Raw Athletic stretch.

Cathy, Stretch Max was probably a good choice to give your legs a break.

Hello to Diane Sue and Lori. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Yesterday was a rest day. I had a nice time with my ladies' group.
Today I got up early and did CDorner Cardio Barre and Boxing, 48 minutes, heart rate 121/156, 219 calories, 4,275 steps. I had to get done so I could go pick up my new glasses. They are doing road work and I wanted to get there when it was low traffic in the area. So, it is pretty early, and I am done :) Tomorrow it won't be so quick as I have an appointment that will probably use up at least two hours in the morning, so probably no workout again. Temperature is so nice today and right at 70 for a high. The rest of the week after the rain tomorrow will drop into the low 30's at night and not warm up a lot. Hopefully not stormy weather though. I hate going to appointments if the weather is really bad.

We did not have very long outages at our last house. It was close to a major medical complex and hospitals. They had it back up and running fast. They send me texts here letting me know an outage is in our area and approximate repair time. They also let me know when it is fixed and tell if it is not working at our home notify them. When I know bad weather is coming, I try to be sure my devices are fully charged all of the time. As far as generators, they are really expensive. The problem is when nothing is going wrong and there are other things needing attention they seem to always get put on hold.

Cathy, I have 14 risers because of purchasing steps and my high step. It does work nice when I want to use it as a weight bench. It is handy with the Total Body Fit Tower weight workout and barbell. I have got where I prefer dumbbells to the barbell though. The stretching was probably the best alternative today. That or a mobility workout which helps loosen things up and get the joints loosened up a bit.

Carolyn, nice job on STS Total Body yesterday. That is a long weight workout. I feel that way when the neighbors have power and we are hoping to have some soon. Cardio Quick Fix is a nice workout for the day after STS.

Judy, great Peloton ride, it sounds tough. It is nice to be able to get home projects done. I got out touch up paint a month ago and it is still waiting on me to use it. Just nicks on molding and cabinet doors from moving things. It keeps bugging me.

Valerie, so far we have never had a power outage long enough to have food all thawed out. I am a bit more concerned with where we are at though as I remember when we had all of the ice a couple of years ago and my daughter living in this area having her power out for several days. So much building around the area and digging. Just like the night we had no water which seemed really odd to me, but I guess with the digging all things are possible. We had an internet outage here a while back and it was because the cut the line or something with the backhoe. So, we have the line hanging over the fence right now. I keep wondering when they are going to fix it. This affected multiple homes in our line of houses.

Did another hike this morning. a hair under 2 hours, at a state park along the water. it was a huge mess. it's along the Sound where the wind from the west hits first. the number of trees, branches debris down was incredible. we walked along the beach first but then uphill and thru the forest. we finally escaped back to the road when the tangle of downed trees got too complicated to get around and over. that will be a several month project to cut and clear all of it. saw ducks, loons, mergansers on the water.
we've dealt with power outs forever but there are more people living here now and every little separate community is another enclave of customers who need to be serviced if the weather takes out lines. we are having some friends to dinner tomorrow tutoring us on generators. we know some but not enough and its good to get info from local people who've done this before. there are still thousands of people out of power from the storm last friday night. they have the same camper model we have and thats how we met a couple weeks ago.

I try to schedule appts not too early to I avoid the morning commute traffic, but not so late I get in the late afternoon traffic. I always check the traffic app as I'm leaving to make sure there hasn't been a major crash so I have a chance of using alternate routes.

this turned out to be one of the worst storms for power outs in many years. the wind focused right in a narrow band. thousands are still out of power. the area where we went to hike yesterday was one of the worst. we have a lot of big trees here. they get uprooted and also the tops get blown off and tangled in wires.

This morning I did ICE Rock’m Sock’m kickboxing, a timesaver premix. That was 35 minutes and 256 calories burned. My average heart rate was 134 and maximum heart rate was 163. I had to go grocery shopping this morning and I wanted to get ahead of the rain from the hurricane. I managed to go to three stores and was on my way home before the rain started.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Cardio Barre and Boxing. I’m glad that you enjoyed the Ladies game day. STS Total is a long workout. That’s why I chose to do single sets instead of the two sets for each exercise.

Valerie, great job with the hike. I’m sure that your friends had good information to share about their generator.

Hello to Judy, Cathy, and Lori.

No workout today. I have been out walking a few times and hope to go out a couple more. This is our last great day and it is a perfect day in my book. Sunny, low 70’s, slight breeze. Tomorrow it starts vanishing and tomorrow night we’re supposed to get that white stuff. A coating to an inch. I leave a week from tomorrow to go get Derek and head to Fort Worth. Going to sit down this weekend and take a look at the forecast for the trip. So far the first day looks like it’ll be okay. But I’ve had it looking okay even 24 hours ahead and it goes bad. Sigh.
also, need to make a thorough list of what I need to do. We’ll have a car load of stuff. We have to take bedding, dishes, food for the trip, plus I’m taking a bunch of nonperishable food down to Nick. Plus all the usual stuff clothes etc. Nick has a tiny apartment, and only enough dishes for himself. It’s going to be an adventure.

Diane Sue, nice job with the CDorner Cardio Barre and Boxing. I use the bench and fit tower together, too. No way I can lift heavy enough to get the weight I can use for things like chest press safely in place, but I can lift it up from the tower.

Valerie great job with the hike. Too bad about all the downed trees, wind does so much damage.

Carolyn nice job with Rock’m Sock’m Kickbox.

Yesterday I did one of the workouts that came with the Fit Tower. It was 35 minutes long and pretty easy for a Cathe workout. I felt like I needed an active recovery day so it was perfect. Today I did a 45 minute Peloton ride.

Cathy-Great job with Stretch Max and walking today. It was really nice out.

Carolyn-Great job with Cardio Quick Fix workout one.

Diane Sue-Great job with CDorner Cardio Barre and Boxing.

Valerie-Great job with the hike. We are going to look at generators soon too.

Hi to Lori

Just finished Core-Intensive Strength and Conditioning. I thought I'd done this one before, but definitely no. Wow this is a good workout. Total body with everything also hitting core. I thought it was rather shoulder heavy. Also a number of moves, I've not seen before. 50 minutes long and enough cardio based that I got 43 zone minutes.

Judy great job with the Fit Tower workout, and Peloton ride. I got the original tower around the time STS came out, didn't realize the second version came with workouts. Only Fit Tower workouts I have are the DVD set she did in 2017, and those are all longer.

Hi to all!
