Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/4

Good morning & Happy Hump Day!

Spent most of the time at home yesterday, keeping an eye on the 2 furry four legged ones. The vet suggested I start Kylee on some fish oil, ( she has a "scooting" problem) and I gave her the first one yesterday. She could not keep her breakfast down. Great, another sick dog? I think it was the fish oil, she was fine after that. I guess she can't tolerate that, so we are giving her flax seed instead. It's always something.

Judy, good luck today with the mammogram.

Lynda, I liked the GW...but it seems that it is all centered on Alicia....the other characters are not doing much...I like the new person that befriended her in bond court..I hope she stays and becomes a real friend to Alicia, she needs a friend. I like the parts where her daughter was her "assistant".

Lori, wow, your trip to Cancun came up pretty fast. That will be great! Good that you have stuck with the principles of the 21DF eating and can still wear that bikini! :).

Valerie, good job on the hike. I agree that not all moving water is safe, but it seems like it would be better than a puddle that has been warmed in the sun for days..ugh...we are not sure if it was giardia, but the vet used that as an example of what it is similar to...they don't test the stool for it.

Hi to Josie,

I have a wake to go to today, one of my cousins past away.:..she was 91. She used to do my hair when I was really young....my mother used to take me there for permanent waves...awful for a little kid to sit through...she did it out of her kitchen to supplement her income after her husband was killed in WW2. Memories.....

Take care,

I still occasionally drink surface water if we're in the backcountry, but there are more people out there these days and even remote mountain streams can be contaminated. I never worried about my dog drinking surface water though. I agree.... stagnant puddles are even more questionable. my kitty.. no matter how many bowls of fresh water are placed, still drinks from the shower floor, the toilet, and the bird bath, and the deck surface. another reason to worm him occasionally!
Deb, does scooting have something to do with the anal glands? glad the doggies are doing better.

Pet waste is an issue. the bike trail we ride ...they have "bag stations" everywhere, but hardly anyone drops it in the trash. instead, they pick up the waste, and then leave the bag sitting on the trail. plenty of people don't pick it up at all. the bags are brightly colored so very noticeable. I don't know why someone would bother to pick it up ( the icky part) and then leave the bag sitting. eventually it dissolves in the rain, but it all ends up in surface water. and the lawn mower goes thru several times a year besides. we've encountered a worse problem this year.... people doing the same thing. poop piles and toilet paper ( dead giveaway it's not a dog) sitting right in parking lots, trails etc. Yellowstone parking areas were especially bad, and they have pit toilets EVERYWHERE. just disgusting.

Lori congrats on maintaining the weight loss, and enjoy Cancun.
Judy after you mentioned the weights, I looked at ours. we have two 35 pounders that DH uses. I used 30's before, but not 35. my goal is to get back up there. 20's and 25's are my limit right now.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did RK with 1 lb. gloves (55:15).

Deb, my guess on the GW is that it won't stay solely on Alicia once the Presidential campaign gets going and Alicia makes up her mind whether to join the devil's firm. My sister's miniature schnauzer (whom I inherited when she died) messed up her anal glands from gorging on bird seed and had to have them removed entirely. She scooted so much before getting seriously ill that her bottom was bloody.

Lori, yes, DH is very funny. I was telling him about an article in the New Yorker about conceptual poetry (which is really pretty silly to my mind) and a poet who created 'poems' by using only one vowel for several pages and then moving on to the next vowel. So DH started doing this while we were having dinner. e.g., "Aardvarks bark and clap at hams that park and fart." Great poetry it ain't, but once I got him started, he wouldn't stop. So lucky to be off to Cancun!

Valerie, that sounds disgusting. What is wrong with people?! I was asking DH about Max's outdoor drinking habits, and it turns out he is pretty fussy. DH brings extra water with him and a bowl for Max when they are on long drives. Max likes all form of excrement except pigs', but mostly to roll in. Every now and then I can hear DH's voice outside, "DON'T ROLL!" and I know some turkeys have been through. Max just loves to get it around his neck--maybe for the delight he takes in its smell. We use Advantix on Max.

Deb perms for kids brings back memories.... my mother used to do that to us. UGH. stinky, curly, I looked ridiculous. "Tonnette" it was called I think. my hair is naturally curly already, so it was just an awful experience for no reason. why would someone make a kid sit thru a perm when they already have curly hair?

Lynda, that brings back dog memories. he was such a terrific dog, but he also would eat or roll in poop. cow poop.... especially the green liquidy kind. ...just when you think they're almost human, they do something like that.....

People can be disgusting too for unknown reasons. this has been in my face multiple times lately. I don't know if this is due to international tourists who don't know what is appropriate? children who don't know better? not what you expect to see when you pull into a turnout to look at elk .

My aunt Betty's dog used to scoot a lot but he was always eating things he shouldn't. drapery was a specialty. aunt betty is still having a rough course. after her fall/ broken ribs,, she had a UTI, pneumonia, and now blood clots in her leg and lung, and atrial fib. she is back in the adult group home but apparently she is not going to die easily. sadly she is going to go slowly an inch at a time. .

Hi Ladies,

The Dr. visit went well. She is not going to put me on any meds for my cholesterol, but I do need to go back in 3 months for blood work.
She just wants to keep a close eye on it, but I told her that I would eat as clean as possible.

I ran 3 miles yesterday and worked out with Karina and today I went to a spin class.

Lori, I have not gained any weight either and I'm following the 21day fix diet at least 85%. Have a great time in Cancun!

Deb, glad that Keegan is doing better and I'm so sorry to hear about your cousin. I've only had a perm once and I hated it.
I felt like a puddle :)

Garance, sounds like your DH has a great sense of humor.

Valerie, people do the same here. They never pick up after their dogs even though bags are provided :( There was a man that used to let his dog poop in front of our house and my DH confronted him and he denied it. We have a video system that records everything and my DH pointed it out to him and we never saw him again.

Judy, that is a good idea to use the time for core.

Josie

Good evening ladies!

Slept in this morning and no lunch workout, way to busy today. Came home and did Live Fit and Firm minus the core. Just wasn't feeling the core today. I followed up with a ruthless lunatic legs. My legs did not feel worked enough so this did the trick.

Deb...yes Cancun came really quick. I tried on my 2 peices last night and I actually felt pretty good. Not run runway model material but for 54 I felt pretty darn good! Still bringing a one piece as back up though. Towards the end of the vacation I may need it. :). You had me scared there for a second thinking Kylee was sick too!

Valerie...that is so gross not picking it up. Even when I walk Chester I always pick up unless he goes off into the woods. We have a lot of horses around here and that is really gross to me. If I have to pick up my dog - people need to pick up after their horse!!!

Lynda...that is hysterical about your DH! Very funny. We are so looking forward to Cancun. We absolutley love it there and this will be our 9th or 10th time and 4th consecutive time at this hotel. We always have so much fun. It has been 4 years since we have gone due to my DH breaking his ankle then hernia surgery. So we are really excited. Like two highschool kids excited! Oh by the way DH has lost about 35lbs and looks and feels great! I am so happy for him.

Josie...great the Drs visit went well. That is awesome that you have not gained any either. I really like the 21 day fix. I may buy her new cookbook but undecided. If I do I will let you know how it is.

Hi to Josie!

Good morning,

Yesterday I did a walk/jog workout at the track with my cousin, it was perfect weather for this, sunny, blue skies, 52 degrees, perfect.

Valerie, My mother was the same, I have naturally curly hair, and she made me get those horrible perms too! So sorry about Aunt Betty...I hope she is out of pain soon, yes, the "scooting" is an indication of anal glands needing to be emptied. We just had this done at the vet about a month ago. The vet said to try upping her Omega3's, which could be giving a fish oil capsule, or flax seed. Since she couldn't keep the fish oil down, I started her on flax seed. We'll see if this helps. I can't believe how disgusting some people are! Doing that on a trail??? Leaving behind toilet paper etc?? ewwwww....

Lynda, that is horrible about your sister's dog. Now you have me wondering....Kylee always "cleans up" after Fritz, if any seeds drop from his cage, she is right over there eating them. He doesn't drop a lot though, I have a nice seed catcher and also an additional tray where his food dish is that catches most of anything he drops. Your DH is funny..:)

Josie, did your cholesterol numbers go down at all? I still need to lose another 10 pounds. :(. I would love to have a video camera around our house! Although, I don't think I would want a tape of what that guy (pervert) was doing in front of our house on the 4th of July, a couple years ago. Not sure if I mentioned it, but it was disgusting.

Lori, that is go great about your DH and the weight loss. I wish I could get John to do something. How long will you be staying in Cancun? I love the Riu too, we went to them for about 10 years, both on the east and west coasts. I assume you are bringing workout gear? LOL.

Hi Judy!

Dogs baths today, and house stuff, getting ready for the trip this weekend. I have not decided what to take, eg, workout clothes or not.

Take care,

When were had almost gotten to Yellowstone, we stopped in a turn out on the highway to look at a map. a young guy got out of a car he'd obviously slept in and stood there relieving his bladder. he could have walked into the trees 2 feet away and not made it a public spectacle but no. then we started into the park from west Yellowstone, and in both of the first turn outs we used, there were poo piles! I couldn't believe it. Yellowstone, like most parks has an over abundance of restrooms and trash cans. they are everywhere. it's like our riding trail and dog poop..... I'll bet only 10% of people do what they should, and it's made so easy for them!
DH and I are long time hikers/backpackers, and there are proper ways to deal with it when nature calls. you dig a cat hole, and then cover it. Not difficult.
Deb, it's nice to know I wasn't the only "permed" one. I hated it!. none of my friends went thru that. they did it to me so regularly that they didn't know my hair was curly until I was about 12, when ducktail hairstyle were the rage. when my hair got cut, it curled up by itself, and I've struggled with it ever since.
Lori, when our dog used to hike with us, we did the same thing as for us. bury it. don't want it dissolving and running off into lakes and streams! that's one way "pristine" water gets contaminated.

Oh my, time to change to a new topic.... I did x train ch, ba, sh, and core 1 yesterday.

Josie hope you can get your numbers down. My numbers are great. DH eats the same thing, his numbers are not great. different metabolisms. did you mean poodle? that's what I looked like too! I take a flat iron to it these days to smooth it down.
Lori congrats for your DH. 35 lbs is terrific! we have horse use on the bike trails here too. it mystifies me that they aren't responsible for the manure piles. we hose off our bike tires, and always wash hands after putting bikes on the carrier because there's no way to do it and not handle the tires. the Montana trails had lots of manure too. I always have hand sanitizer handy. I don't know the risks of horse manure. it seems like it should be similar to cows, pigs, chickens..

Lynda, DH wants a bushnell outdoor trail camera for his birthday. is that what you have? I have an ad for them right here. he wants to set it up in our yard to see if we can get pics of the local bobcat...and who knows what else. we could also catch the dog walkers who don't pick up after themselves.
Deb, yes I would like to deal with the 10 lbs that continues to plague me, but I've been doing the WW program as consistently as I can and I stay the same. I can't do low carb, my blood sugars get too low. my weight is stable, just a little higher than I want it to be, so I'm not gaining, just not losing. I have given up avocados on salads, and found a lower calorie fiber supplement to use in the morning. 8 calories vs probably 75. lunch out today for a birthday, but restaurants are not an issue for me. I always get a salad with protein usually grilled chicken or fish, dressing on the side. aunt betty used to call if "Valerie food" because it was so predictable.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did AB (54:00).

I don't recall ever getting a permanent. I do remember my mom going to the 'beauty parlor' for perms on a regular basis though.

Lori, that's wonderful on your husband's weight loss. He must be so pleased. Does he have to buy new clothes? How long will you be in Cancun?

Deb, I don't know how my sister's schnauzer managed to gorge on bird seed, but I do remember how worried she was. She couldn't figure out what was making her so sick. I can't imagine a few little birdseeds would do much damage to Kylee, but who knows?

Josie, that's great news about your lab results. Whatever happened about your daughter's car and the neighbor who smashed into it??

Valerie, around here, horse and cow manure is used as a fertilizer in gardens. I can't imagine someone getting off their horse and picking up a big 'pie'. Pig manure is dangerous for worms (ascaris), and the wonderful thing about free-range chickens is that their manure really fertilizes the area they range in.

Had lunch with a new poet in town (Marc Vincenz). Fascinating man--half-Swiss, half-British. Moved here largely because his wife is an ob-gyn and wanted a less harried pace than where she was in Cambridge, MA.

Hi to Judy. Ready for meso 3 next week??

Hi Everyone,

Today I tried something different and did a Bob Harper workout. It's called "Pure Burn Super Strength". I did the 20 minute beginner version, which really didn't feel that much like a beginner workout. It was pretty good quality, not quite up to Cathe standards but surprisingly close. I'm hoping I can get DH to try this one out. After that I did KCM abs & core.

Deb-I never had a perm as a child but I started getting them when I was in my 20's. I still get them once a year or so. I got my last one a couple of weeks ago. My hair is very straight and I've always liked having a little curl and body from a perm. They are so much better than they used to be. They aren't as strong, so the curl doesn't last quite as long, but they also don't do as much damage to your hair.

Josie-That's great that you don't have to take cholesterol medicine. I'm due for a recheck in the next month or so and hopefully I've brought mine down a little too.

Lynda-yes, I am ready for meso 3. I'm really enjoying the rest week but I am starting to miss STS..
Also looking forward to ICE coming out. I think they just finished all the filming.

Valerie-I can relate, as DH always calls what I eat "Judy food" since I too am very predictable with what I eat.

Lori-that's great that your DH lost 35 lbs! Hope you have an awesome vacation!

Good evening ladies!

This morning I ran and at lunch we did 2 SB barre. Her interval and a floor band routine. Both were really good. Everyseems to be liking band workouts.

Deb...I remember that weirdo outside your home. Very creepy. We leave on Saturday and come home the following Satuday. It can not come quick enough! My DH is packing now and he is driving me crazy! He is worse then most females and really over packs! I swear the man has more clothes than me and trust me when I say I have a lot!!! We are staying at the Riu Caribe and love it. .

Valerie...that guy is disgusting. Gross. My first perm was in my 20's and hated it. Tried one once when I was 30 and it was just ok. Stopped having them after that. That camera sounds interesting. Reading this reminded me to pull out out our camera and charge. We are so use to using our Iphones would have forgotton our camera. so thanks for mentioning this. Several years back we bought a waterproof camera mainly for our Cancun vacations. I have some really great action shots jet skiing and swiming in the ocean.

Lynda...funny my grandmother did the same thing would go to the beauty parlor for a "permanent". Seems like she was always there! DH feels great and his ankle is doing really well too! He is actually fitting into all his clothes he used to wear and very excited about this. One reason why he is overpacking!! Agree that there is a huge difference between Cambridge and your area. Sounds like it was a really nice lunch.

Judy...I have heard of Bob Harper. Is he from Biggest Loser? I have read great reviews about his workouts.

Have a great night all. Hi to Josie!

Good morning,

One more day and we are off to D.C. I am not decided on what I am packing yet, I guess I better get going on that. Someone will have to start the new thread on Sunday. I'll try to check in...I haven't decided whether or not I am brining my iPad yet. Way too many "electronics" to carry. I always put them in my carry-on bag.

Lynda, did you know this poet before he moved to your town? Well the flax seed seems to be working...Kylee has stopped "scooting" and has greatly reduced the amount of time she spends "down there" licking etc" Yahoo! I don't think people should have to pick up after horses either...yuk. You would have to carry a full size shovel with you.

Judy, did you purchase the Bob Harper workout? who is he? Was he Oprah's trainer? So funny that you get perms for a little curl, and I do anything I can to get rid of the curl I have. I am looking forward to ICE as well. The info that has been posted is great, I even think I may keep all the DVD's for this series, even the KB one.

Valerie, I guess human behavior should not surprise us any more. I'm with you...don't know what I would do without a flat iron. :). I wish I had Judy's straight hair! We always want what we don't have.

Lori, Have a great trip! I found that when we went to Mexico, I always had clothes that I never even wore. Most of the times we went, I had to pack minimally for work....it was very casual though, funny to see US Customs inspectors who used to come to our meetings in Bermuda’s and Hawaiian shirts. LOL. Looking forward to seeing some of your pictures when you return. I remember my grandmother and aunts getting their hair done at the beauty shop once a week...and doing all they could during the week to "keep" their 'do." Ah...the memories.

Josie, great job on the workouts!

HouseMax, packing and taking the dogs to our friends tonight...

Take care,

the trail we ride is asphalt with many sections of parallel trail on grass where the horses are supposed to be most of the time. If the manure is off on the grass it's fine, but on the asphalt it can be formidable, especially with skinny tires. my main thought is that even if the trail looks "clean", it isn't. when you load a bike onto a carrier, it's almost impossible not to handle the tires and even if they look clean, they have been thru a fair bit of horse manure, and dog droppings. Same with mountain bikes, and those tires have WAY more tread. mountain bike trails are more likely to have horse traffic too. Since soap and water isn't available, we use sanitizer after loading bikes... we're hungry and want to eat a snack. I'm not a germaphobe, but I don't ignore fecal contamination. Plenty of people have gotten sick and died from accidental contamination of food . we use manure in our garden too. Great stuff. After riding I'm careful to wash or sanitize my hands before eating anything, and not to rub my face, eyes, etc.

Deb, I agree, always wanted straight hair, but I suppose if I had it, I'd find some other issue. As an adult, I got perms for years , very gentle ones, but my skin started getting sensitive and flaky so I quit and went to a simpler hairstyle. I remember people getting their hair done weekly, and then sleeping wrapped in tissue paper to keep the style for a week. up-do's like French twists. and can after can of hair spray. my hair style always fell apart in 24 hours, no matter what.
Have a good trip to D. C. I'm thinking oprah's trainer was Bob Green something. Greenwood? maybe just Green. I have one of his books somewhere. bob Harper sounds familiar but not sure from where.

I had my "Valerie" food for lunch yesterday, good and no guilt today. No workout, though, got too late, traffic was bad.

I made a curry dish for the first time since we replaced the kitchen range hood and it worked better. I had to do some scrubbing and rinse off the vent screen but a day later I can't smell it anymore. I love the flavor and fragrance, just not the next day.

Hi Everyone,

Deb-I bought the Bob Harper workout on Amazon. I'm not sure if he trained Oprah.
I would love to have naturally curly hair. I sure would have saved some money over the years :)

Lori-I think you would like Bob. His workouts are challenging and fast paced. Not really heavy lifting but more high rep, metabolic type workouts.

Hi to Valerie, Lynda & Josie,

Have a great Friday!

Judy

Valerie-I think we posted at the same time. Yes, Bob Greene was Oprah's trainer. Bob Harper is a host/trainer on The Biggest Loser program.

Hi Ladies,

I did not run yesterday, just worked out with Karina. Today we ran 3 miles and tomorrow I may be doing Zumba and Bodypump.
My DD called us last night to tell us that she got a new job. She will be reaching out to bloggers to promote new movies in a fun way that will reach people her age. They offered her 48K, full benefits, 12 days vacation, 8 holidays and 4 sick leave days. The only drawback is that she will not be working at home in her PJ's :). The other job was under contract with no benefits.

Garance, my DD's car is still in the shop because the parts are taking a long time to arrive and the amount of damage went from $6,200 to $10,500 plus the rental that she has been driving.

Deb, my DM used to go to the salon every week and she would also color her hair every month. Have a great time in DC.

Judy, how do you control your cholesterol? My Dr. recommended red yeast rice, but I'm taking Cholest-off and I add chia seeds and flax seeds to my oatmeal.

Valerie, I did mean poodle :). My hair is wavy, but since it is very sort the only place I use my flat iron is on my bangs because they get curly.

Lori, have a wonderful time in Cancun. That is so funny that you DH overpacks. We each take a carryon duffle bag even when we went to Greece :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Josie

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Cardio Supersets (41:30).

Very gloomy here today with a lot of heavy rain.

Deb, no, I have never met Marc Vincenz before, but a local friend is renting his condo to him and his wife and thought it would be nice to introduce us and take us out for lunch. He does know one of the poets in the English dept., but he is basically here because of his wife's move and wants to meet people. Glad the flax seed is working for Kylee. Enjoy your trip to D.C.! No boring meetings for you this time.

Valerie, I'm sure that's very frustrating for you and DH to run into a lot of horse droppings. I remember those big beehives too. Sometimes they were spectacularly high. I don't know why we all thought it was so glamorous. Now I think it was probably uncomfortable to keep it over night, wrapped in toilet paper. I never had enough hair to create that kind of look. Simple pageboy in h.s.

Lori, have fun in Cancun! My DH is a last-minute packer. I tend to overthink what I need to bring and usually end up with several unworn items.

Judy, I never watched The Biggest Loser, but I think I know who you mean. He looks very boyish.

I just received my new MacBook Pro laptop with retina display, a 27 " Thunderbolt display for at home, and all the cables, mouse etc. to go with it. Now I just have to figure out how to use all this new equipment because I have always used a PC and my other little laptop is an old Dell Inspiron that I took to England. I think I will have to hire someone to help me set everything up. IT at the college will help me transfer all of my stuff from the college computer to my new MacBook, but they don't do home help. My older son's woman friend is still at Apple, so I got a 25% discount on everything. Since I love my IPhone and IPad, I figured this was a good idea.

Tomorrow is our anniversary, so we will be going out.

I realize expecting people to pick up after horses when they won't even pick up after dogs is totally pie-in-the-sky. the other place we mountain bike (the tree farm) is a very low key place with gravel and mud for trails. in the horse parking area, they have signs telling people to pick up their manure and horse hair, and not to leave it in the parking area. And they do! the trails have plenty of manure but on dirt, manure mixes in and disappears, more or less. we know the tires are embedded though, and hose the bikes and wash or sanitize after working with them. Now I will get off the manure kick.

Lori have a great tri[p to mexico.
