Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/27

Off on my trip this morning. I have to say, incredibly stressful. I have gotten to hate flying, the anticipation of it, makes me WAY nervous. driving trips don't bother me much but flying does. silly, because I used to do this all the time, sometimes several trips in a week. now one trip and I am over whelmed by it.

on another topic, I am switching from a medicare advantage plan to a medicare supplement. more expensive but more flexible, plus wont pay big co pays, and will be able to go to specialists without referrals from my primary care person. She has always been willing to refer where I wanted, but I can't count on her being there forever. plus, when we are out of state I don't want to worry about networks. this is the sign up window when changes can be made. I already got approval for jan 1. we also wanted to get DH and I on a similar plan so paperwork isn't too confusing. he is eligible and is signed up for November and is eager to get some things done that his previous plan didn't cover.

This morning I did JS One Mile of Motivation from the WS3 series. That was 15 minutes and 11 calories burned. Average heart rate was 127 and maximum heart rate was 147. I wanted something short to get me moving today. After that I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Core Strength and Flexibility practice. That was 33 minutes and an additional 53 calories burned.

Valerie, I know what you mean about the stress of flying. The preparation, getting to the airport and through security all add to my stress. However, I hate long car trips more! I just want to be at my destination. I’m glad that you found a Medicare plan that suits you better.

Hello to everyone and have a great day.

Made it but way early. No traffic and way faster than expected. Once I get going I am ok but the prep is stress! I am better on driving trips .
We think being on the same medicare plan will simplify things even a little more expensive. But the 50$ co pays add up and I tired of needing referrals all the time

I did no workout at all today. I few PT stretches here and there. I felt I needed some recovery.

Valerie, those are are some of the reasons I did not choose an Advantage program. I like freedom of choice so I can get a good doctor if I have to find a different one. I have to wait till Nov first to sign my husband up for Medicare.

Carolyn, I really like that Jane Adams yoga segment.

We went to a medicare service to switch me. once you are on an advantage plan, it’s complicated paperwork to switch to supplement. DH had already signed up effective nov 1. Mine will change jan1 but it still takes a while after to transition but we will then be on the same program thru same company. A discount if both people are on the same thing . I don’t have anything pending so a good time to switch. Because we now are part time in two states I need more options. Travel went ok yesterday and good to see my friends.

Today I did Ellen Barrett’s Feel Good Fusion from her 7 Day Challenge program. This workout is a mix of pilates, dance, and yoga. My time was 30 minutes with 100 calories burned. Average heart rate was 107 and maximum heart rate was 127. I also walked on the treadmill for 10 minutes for an additional 52 calories. I’m planning to do lower intensity workouts this week.

Hello to everyone and have a wonderful day.

Today I did Low Impact Circuit time saver cardio blast, 48 minutes, 352 calories, heart rate 150 average, 190 max, 4,332 steps, met 8.3. I thought the heart rate reading was high, but then things seemed really low for weights today. I did Kelly's Raw 5 Day Strength day 3 shoulders and legs skipping the shoulders. I started at 13 minutes with the core segment that splits shoulders and legs. This was 27 minutes, 89 calories, met 4.5, 313 steps, heart rate average 98, max 130. I finished with my PT exercises which are basically shoulder and upper back work, 24 minutes, 41 calories, 185 steps. Total time was 99 minutes, 482 calories, 4,830 steps. I need to go out and run errands before the cold ugly weather hits. I will check back in awhile.

This morning I did another workout from Ellen Barrett’s 7 Day Challenge, Power 15. It was 15 minutes and 67 calories burned. Average heart rate was 111 and maximum heart rate was 139. After that I did Jessica Smith’s WS3, Tone and Flow. That one was 32 minutes with 218 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 157. Both workouts were very light weights and high reps. I used a 2# dumbbell, the same as Ellen. I am amazed at how effective this type of workout is.

Diane Sue, great job with Low Impact Circuit and Raw Strength. Low Impact Circuit is one of my favorite workouts.

Valerie, I hope that you are enjoying your vacation.

Hello to Deb, Judy, and Lori.

This morning I did Walk Strong and Have Fun: Have a Ball, 33 minutes, 197 calories, heart rate average 135, max 158, met 7.6, 2,654 steps. I then did JS Walk Strong Build Balance + Inner Strength, session #1 core control 32 minutes, 163 calories, heart rate average 129, max 175, 1,479 steps, met 6.2. Total time was 65 minutes, 360 calories, 4,133 steps.

Carolyn, I have always liked Low Impact Circuit. I started thinking I was going to do the cardio and lower mix, but when she started doing lower with overhead work with the dumbbell, I switched which mix. I am often amazed at the work that I can get from some of the light weight and the band and tubing workouts. I have been pretty sore lately from those, even my legs.

Hi Everyone,
Monday I did a 45 minute Peloton Ride and Jessica Smith Walk On-Belly Blasting Strength, Power Posture Walk, and Hips & Knees Bonus. Total time for all was about 95 minutes. I felt like doing more because I worked over the weekend and didn't really get any good workouts in.

Valerie- I would be very stressed out if we had to fly. Twenty years ago I flew regularly and was fine but now I'm sure it would cause me a lot of anxiety.

Diane Sue-Nice workouts! I am also amazed at how good of a workout I can get from using lighter weights and bands/tubing.

Carolyn-Great job with the Ellen Barrett workouts! It's a good idea to have lower intensity weeks. I've been doing more Jessica Smith workouts recently for that reason.

Hi to Deb & Lori,

Here are some photos of our kitchen lighting project-the first on is before anything was done. We had fluorescent lights with panels over the ceiling. This was the only photo of the old kitchen lights that I could find :). Chris finished installing the second track last night so the only thing left is to install a dimmer switch.
I'll post a photo of the finished lights later today. For some reason I couldn't get the one I just took to upload.

Good morning,

No workouts to report. We are getting ready to leave tomorrow for Rochester NY, trialing in agility again Friday and Saturday. It is only about an hour and a half drive, but starts at 8 am each day, so we decided to just go tomorrow and stay 2 nights. Less stress for sure.

Valerie, I feel exactly like you do. Flew for work, I guess I was more or less immune to it because it was often, and had to be done. Now I hate it, dread having to go on a plane. Good that you and your husband are going to be on the same medical plan, makes things so much simpler. (if anything to do with medical insurance can be called "simple" LOL). We have yet to renew, John wants to go to a lesser expensive version of our plan...I am not sure if that is good or not. We have been very lucky, with minimal health issues, but you never know. We have no PCP co-pays now, that would be something like $20...with new plan, and instead of $65 a month each, it would be $0.00. No referrals needed on either plan.

Diane Sue, hope you are feeling better. I would not want to give up being able to choose your doctors either....

Carolyn, great job on the workouts....still doing a Cathe rotation, with changes where you want them?

Judy, the lights will be really nice! Lots of work, but worth it :)

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

This morning I did Rev’d Up Rumble which was 41 minutes and 302 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 144.

Deb, I’m glad to hear from you today. I was wondering if you were okay. I’m not really following a rotation this week. I’m using Ellen Barrett’s 7 day Challenge for a change of pace. Some of the workouts are only 15 minutes, so I have been adding on something similar for a longer workout.

Judy, great job with the Peloton ride and Jessica Smith workouts. Your kitchen lights will be a nice addition. I’m sure that you will be happy with the change.

Hello to Diane Sue, Valerie, and Lori.

This morning I did Kelly Coffey Cardio Sculpt Overload premix Low Impact and Lower (this is all I have done of this since I got the dvd right when I was having so much pain) 28 minutes, heart rate average 141, max 174, 179 calories, met 8.6, 2,348 steps. I watched the compound and boxing portions when I was done. No way can I do some of those moves since there were some snatches and overhead presses. That will have to wait. She does boxing with light dumbbells. I then did Fit Split Low Impact Cardio timesaver, 28 minutes, heart rate average 134, max 182, 1,924 steps, met 8.0, 167 calories. This was 56 minutes, 4,272 steps, 346 calories. I also did some pt exercises and rolling with foam roller and therapy balls for 24 minutes, 33 calories. I forgot about the mountain climbers and plank walk in and walk outs to standing. I ended up modifying and doing something else part of the time.

Judy, that is going to look so nice when you are done with your project. Cute picture of Shadow. Keeping an eye on the what you are doing :) We had a half Siamese cat named bobo who used to sit on top of the refrigerator and knock down the dog treats so she could get into them. My husband used to say she was almost like a dog. She played fetch with us and brought things back. I am enjoying JS. I plan on doing at least one of the balance and inner strength workouts tomorrow.

Deb, it probably would be less stressful to get there early for the trials. We are going out of town Friday for a road trip that is about a 3 hour drive, so we are staying the night and doing a sight seeing drive for the fall colors and will come back Saturday. I need to call my grandson and have him come and take care of Gertie and hang with her a bit. I like my medicare plan the way it is right now. It has been way less stressful since I have not had to pay any co pays other than part D. Unfortunately they are raising the deductible on part D for any tier levels above tier 2, so there will be a deductible when I get my arthritis medicine + my co pay. But, they are the lowest of the others I checked. I never did like flying. I hate airports. They are so big and I am always afraid I will get lost or miss a flight.

I got an email from the arthritis center that I go to telling people that are checking their open enrollment to check up on the insurance providers for those that get infusions for particular biologic meds. One provider (unnamed) is planning on taking away some of these meds. They put it on hold since doctors that use these are not happy. They said that they will probably only put in hold till open enrollment is over. Then people are stuck. That is a dirty way to treat people. I am not on those, but it makes me angry.

Carolyn, nice workout choices. I think it will take me awhile to get back to the heavier workouts. Hopefully I can do Step Boss by the time they come out.

Today I did Jessica Smith Walk On 6 Mile Mix, total time 1 hr and 45 minutes. I went for my annual mammogram this morning and it was normal. This is the first time I've gotten results the same day as the test. My doctor called with the results around 5. Usually it takes a week so I was very happy to get results so soon.

Diane Sue-Thanks! Shadow is a cutie! She's my little sweetheart. I really enjoyed the JS workout today.

Carolyn-Thank you! I am very happy with the new lights.

Deb-Good luck at the agility trial! Hope you have a nice trip!

Here's the new lights. They are pretty bright so it will be good to have a dimmer switch.

Judy, the lights look nice. I like them bright. We got rid of our chandelier kind of light and put up a light fixture that hugs the ceiling with the track lights and it is nice that they can be adjusted for direction and are a lot brighter. That is great that you got the mammogram results that fast. It is always such a relief to hear the good news rather than wait and worry.

Good morning,

A busy day yesterday running around with errands to do before we leave today. Its amazing how much planning goes into taking 2 dogs on the road for 3 days!

Carolyn, I bet its nice to get away from a rotation once in a while and do something different. I looked at the November rotations and it is something I would really like, all strength based. However, I would probably try to sub some of the live workouts so that I feel I am getting my monies worth.

Diane Sue, you seem to be doing a really good job monitoring what you should be doing, and not doing on all the workouts. Do you still have Kelley Coffey streaming? Mentioning infusions, would you get one? my cousin ( actually my mother's cousin) that lives in Florida had horrible RA, for many many years. She just passed away ( heart attack) this past week. She was much older, probably in her late 80's. Not sure if it was related to the infusion, she had one very recently.

Judy, thanks for the good luck ! the lighting looks great! That is really good that you got the mammogram results so quickly. Waiting for those can be stressful.

Valerie, hope you are enjoying your visit with friends.

Hi to Lori,

Take care,

Today I did more of Ellen Barrett’s 7 Day Challenge, days 3 and 4, since I didn’t do it yesterday. I did 15-Minute Quick Cardio for 94 calories burned. My average heart rate was 122 and maximum heart rate was 150. After that I did Core Yoga for 30 minutes and 84 calories burned. Average heart rate was was 102 and maximum heart rate was 133. The yoga was a mixture of standing and floor yoga that worked the entire core. I can really feel it!

Deb, good luck with the trials, but even more with the 3 day road trip! I looked at the November rotation and plan to start it Monday. The focus of the rotation is strength training, which appeals to me.

Judy, that’s great news about your good mammogram results. I get my results immediately after the procedure too. It really helps to know and not have to wait two weeks.

Diane Sue, nice job with KCM Cardio Sculpt Overload and Fit Split Low Impact Cardio. That’s terrible that the insurance provider would stop coverage for the infusion therapy patients so suddenly.

Hello to Valerie and Lori.

I am late checking in. I was trying to get things accomplished so I could relax and enjoy our road trip without thinking about things needing attention. Today I did a YouTube Jessica Smith Latin Spice Dance Walk, 31 minutes, heart rate 140 average, 167 max, 197 calories, met 7.5, 3,283 steps. I then did Jessica Smith Balance and Inner Strength grace and poise, 35 minutes, 112 average, 136 max heart rate, 1,148 steps, met 5.5, 140 calories. I finished with a You Tube Jessica Smith Weight Loss Yoga, 21 minutes, met 3.0, 65 calories, heart rate average 98, max 120, 137 steps. Total workout time was 87 minutes, 4,568 steps 402 calories.

Deb, I am sure it takes a lot getting the dogs ready and things loaded up for your trips. I do still have Kelly's Raw streaming. That is what I used for the lower body workout the other day. I just skipped the shoulders that were on the first half of the workout and picked up lighter dumbbells. I also did her tubing and stability ball workout. Boy, was my legs sore the next day. I had to alter some shoulder stuff, even on that. Today's JS balance and inner strength workout which is very light weights and works on posture inner muscles, still had to be modified a bit. She hits upper back and shoulders from all around. If I felt I was losing form by lifting and using the shoulders wrong, I did something else.
On the infusions, I don't want them. My daughter had talked to me about a couple of newer biologic meds that doctors seem to think are great. One has been out 14 years and she said it has stopped the progression of RA. Her father in law was using one of them, but the doctors refused to give him more because he had allergic reactions on his skin. He wanted it because it stopped the pain he was having. I have read up on so many of these, and the ones she mentioned, and I am worried about the side effects and other problems. I think God made our bodies to be able to heal and I feel like those meds often stop one thing only to cause the body to have to fight back and other problems happen. I was not real happy about getting the steroid injection. I would not want to do that too much. Steroids can cause bones to become brittle from what I read. So long term use does not seem to be a good idea. I personally was relieved that they did not want to change the medicine that I am taking. I just read recently that the recommended dosage has been lowered for the Paquinel that I am taking. Now it is what I put myself on when I chose to only take one pill at night instead of two a day. The doctor was fine with that. Then my daughter in law told me they lowered her on it to 1 a day. I think this makes it much less to cause eye problems. I think the medicine that my daughter's father in law was on is new and it is called Remicade and is an infusion. They are very expensive treatments. I think that one came from rats. Humira has some terrible side effects as well. Linked to TB and cancer. I am not that trusting of big pharma that wants to make money. There was a time when I would have figured the doctor knew what they were doing and I would have been trusting, but that has pretty much dropped away.

Carolyn, I guess the use of those meds are costing the insurance companies too much money. It is not fair to those that need it or want it. Particularly when doctors are working with them and have to find something else to help them.
