Cathlete
Good Morning,

Nothing new on the UTI issue. I am just trying to keep the symptoms at bay until the tests tomorrow afternoon. I am getting a litle worried though.

Lori, I hope you had an uneventful tril home. You made me think for a second when you said you would get back the hour you lost when we turn the clocks back...I thought you meant turning thm back last night...I thought, " what did I miss?"...LOL...

Judy, I don't think I have ever done a Cathe workout without the DVD using only the sheets. that's a clever idea, as long as you know the numer of sets/reps, why not?

Josie, glad your DB is doing better. :)

Valerie, Yes, the 3 trips to DC this past month really pushed me off "the fence"... I cannot see me doing this much more. I amy have o do a couple of the same day out and back ones before I retire, but that will be the last of it. Are you planning on seeinf a DR for your foot?

Lynda, how was the movie?

We have a Worker Appreciation dinner at the dog club today, and HouseMax for me...

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Good morning ladies!

No work out yet. We got home at about 11:30pm last night so I was exhausted and actually slept until 8:00am which is unheard of for me. Guess I needed it!

Think I will do the Live butts and guts again today. This was a fun one and now that I am home I can heavy up the weights.

What do you guys think of the Nourishing Guru that Cathe sent out? I am going to look into it and see what it is all about. I eat well but certainly can improve in many areas.

Deb..no surprise the past two trips convinced you to go for it. Again I am very happy for you!

No plans today. DS and girlfriend are here so breakfast in the morning, workout, unpack and walk chester. This pretty much sums up my day.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Suzanne Bowen's BarreAmped Bootcamp (71:00). Really like this workout.

Deb, I didn't go to the movie. It's over 2 1/2 hours long and the reviews have been mixed. I don't think either Robert Duvall or Robert Downey Jr. were in "Fargo." Duvall is probably best known for playing Tom, the consigliere in the "Godfather" films and for the TV series "Lonesome Dove." I believe he won an Oscar for playing a very authoritarian father in "The Great Santini," and apparently he is a similar character in "The Judge." Robert Downey Jr. has been playing Sherlock Holmes and the super-hero Iron Man in recent films. They are supposed to be very good in this film, but the reviews talk about too many plots set going. I think maybe I will wait for this one to come out on DVD. I am happy for you as well. I think you are more than ready for the pleasures of retirement.

Lori, my eyes glazed over as soon as I saw that they are opposed to GMO food. My diet is really pretty good--mostly locally grown fruits, veggies, and of course, our own meat. Your vacation sounds just about perfect. I bet Chester and Nilla were happy to see you.

Sorry you are having so much trouble with your foot, Valerie. Hope you get back to being the happy hiker soon.

Josie, does your brother have a job, or is he on disability? It sounds like he is on the mend.

Hi to Judy!

Indian Summer is definitely over I think. The leaves are still beautiful, though.

Hi all.. I did the 23 mile ride today in spite of the wind which was considerable. lovely, warm, but wow, windy. tailwind part of the way, but one heck of a headwind to get back.

I'll look at the nutritional gurus but not expecting much that I'd change. Hope that doesn't sound too "close minded!. my diet is really quite good, by my definition of a good diet. I am not interested in limiting good whole grain carbs, eliminating grains/gluten/ dairy or going anywhere near paleo stuff. I eat very very little "junk" food. I'm in favor of labeling gmo's if it can be done in a meaningful way, but IMO it would be hard to eliminate them even if you wanted to. I have been "weirded out" by the direction a lot of diet trends seem to be going lately.

Yes Lori , that is one of the best moments of vacation...when you get home to the "pet greeting". makes you feel so good.

was wondering if it was Fargo the movie or Fargo the TV series. steve buscemi? ETA I was thinking William macey maybe.

It was Billy Bob Thornton I was trying to think of that is in The Judge...and it was Sling Blade, ( not Fargo) that he was in.

Good morning,

It's Monday again..ugh. Going to the DR today for the 2 tests. CT Scan and a Cystoscopy. Hoping they figure out what this is, but that they don't find anything, which sounds crazy right?

Lori, I liked the site for the Nutritional Gurus. I would sign up for the free seminar, but will be at work at 1:30 on a Tuesday. Why would they do it at that time? They did say that they are recording it so it can be available for those that can't hear it live.

Lynda, With your DH and his raising cattle and chickens etc, I would have thought you would be all for the non GMO foods.

Valerie, glad your foot is better and you were able to do the ride.

Hi to Josie, & Judy,

Take care,

Relaxing after a "hard" weekend!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Petra Kolber's Just Dance (50:45), another oldie but goodie.

What a cute picture Deb! If DH fed his chickens and pigs only feed that was not genetically modified, he would have to quadruple his price. Billy Bob Thornton played the villain in the TV series of Fargo. He was really good, but like all villains, he came to a well-deserved bad end. I think he plays a slick lawyer in The Judge. Have you been keeping up with TGW? It was really good last night. Hope your doctor visit is helpful and good.

I'm with you, Valerie, on my diet. I had a colleague a couple years ago who was trying to lose weight on some diet based on her blood type. I didn't say anything, but I could have told her it wouldn't work. It didn't and then she went to some diet involving insulin and blood sugar monitoring. It didn't work either. She's heavy, but not obese, and has a gorgeous face and a mane of naturally blonde hair that I envy. She's sexy and I don't know why, really, she is bent on fighting her genetics.

Hi to Josie, Lori, and Judy!

Lynda maybe your friend is having blood glucose issues... borderline type 2 diabetic? Lots of people have a chance to head off type 2 diabetes by taking off a few pounds and increasing their exercise. maybe she's trying to outsmart her genetics.

I'm leery of diets where entire food groups get removed for some questionable reason.... I don't include GF in this because there are clearly people outside of those with diagnosed celiac disease who have issues with gluten. plenty of people are doing it because it's trendy right now. this is one area where I wonder if GMO foods are maybe (??) causing a problem but it would be hard and costly to sort out.
it seems to me that if you remove one food group, then you replace it with another. one needs to look at what the final outcome will be. grain based foods are such an important part of most peoples diets and I seriously wonder what replaces them. in theory fresh fruit and vegetables but I doubt that happens often. guess I heard about the blood type diet... sounds goofy for sure. my yoga instructor recently announced that she was now "grain free" so I guess this topic is a bit of a hot button for me right now because I think that it's crazy unless someone has a serious and real, not imagined, problem with grain. I don't think replacing all grains with, for example, bacon is a great idea. or protein supplement drinks. it seems to me that grains are an important component of a balanced diet for most people. even celiac people can have rice and rice based products, corn.
gotta go shopping more later.

ETA back from shopping and flu shot. now maybe the insurance co will stop leaving me reminders!. Hope you get some help Deb... my aunt had something called interstitial cystitis which sounded a lot like what you've described. I think cystitis refers to any bladder inflammation so that isn't very useful.

saw a Brother sewing machine at Costco for $135 that I plan on getting. I use one just for repairs. but DH killed my existing machine trying to sew some jeans. he goes thru the knees and was trying to put a patch on, yanked too hard, won't zig zag anymore, just straight stitch forward and back. it would cost more than that to get anyone to even look at my old machine to see what's wrong, much less fix the problem.

Lori, what a lovely spot with wonderful colors..

Hi Ladies,

No workout today. I will be taking my DB home on Wednesday and then we are going to Las Vegas on Friday to celebrate my DH's birthday. I can't wait to get back to my routine.

Lynda and Valerie, I hate all the diets that remove whole food groups also, I also don't like liquid diets, I like to chew my food ;). I got rid of all the diet books that I have bought over the years. I never did stick to any of them.

I will be back later.

Hi to Judy, Deb and Lori!

Josie

Old Stone Church.jpg
Wanted to share this beautiful picture of the Old Stone Church near my home. A friend of mine posted it on Facebook. It is about 15 minutes away from where I live and on my route to work so I get to see it every day. The church is non active and it is only the shell that remains. It was built in 1891 and is pretty much used for wedding pictures. It is a beautiful place to visit and have a picnic this time of year.

That is a beautiful photo Lori! You live in a very scenic area.

Love the photo of your dogs too Deb! So cute!

Good evening ladies...

No workout this morning. Between adjusting from Central time to Eastern and my usual Sunday night blues I knew I was in for a sleepless night. Wanted to workout tonight as the plan was to start SB 6 week challenge today but just could not do it. Oh well tomorrow will be my start date. :)

Judy...yes I live in a beautiful area. Many country roads and tons of trees. It reallly is so beautiful this time of year. But then the snow comes and ugh.

Deb...loved seeing your doggies! They are just so cute. Hope you made out well with the doctors.

Josie...glad your DB is better. Have fun in Las Vegas! I have never been able to stick to a particular diet either. Never would I even consider a liquid diet. I need substance! When I need to lose a few lbs I still eat the same foods just cut back a little more and up my exersising and I have started this today. As much as I worked put last week I still ate way too much! Seemed like we were always eating. Cutting back the next 2 weeks is in order.

Valerie...thanks for the reminder on the flu shot. I need to get this done. I can't imagine being grain free! I could never do this.

Lynda...sad that your friend seems to have such low self esteem regarding her looks. I do understand though. I was always try to change the shape of my thick legs. Now I have learned to love my muscles and wear them with pride!

Have a great night ladies!

Good morning!
The DR apt went well, CT scans were negative, and cystoscopy looked good. I guess there was some bacteria when they took the sample last Thursday, ( words were "it was not clear") so I am finishing the antibiotic, and he gave me some cream to use, for the irritated area, and to build the tissue. its topical only. I am not too keen on it as it is a hormone, but will try it for a bit to see if it helps.

Lynda, yes, keeping up with TGW. I watch it on John's laptop off CBS Full Episodes. Saw Sunday's episode last night. It's good, but I kind of miss the old days with Lockhart & Gardner being the main law firm. I never did understand all those crazy diets, blood type etc.

Valerie, that's sounds like a good deal on the sewing machine. I used to quilt, but haven't in years. Another one for my "when I retire" list. I read up on IC ( that your aunt had), and that was a fear I had. There is no cure, and really the treatments that are being tried are scary.

Josie, how nice to celebrate your DH's birthday in LV!

Lori, beautiful picture! Driving by that every day would be great, what is it like in the winter? What is SB again? So many programs, too little time! LOL..

Hi to Judy,

Take care,

Deb what good news! we just watched a Frontline report on bacterial antibiotic resistance and it's concerning that many bacteria are getting resistant to most antibiotics ... it's not like it was in the '50's where one dose and you were cured. I may stop and get the sewing machine today. there was an additional $35 off until the end of the week. I've fussed with my broken machine and can get it to work a little, but did not want to spend hundreds of $$ to fix something I barely use. so crazy. there's probably some minor part broken but for someone to take it apart and look and not even fix, costs more than a brand new machine.

Josie, Lori , totally true for me too. drinking calories is not a good approach for me. I never could succeed on a liquid diet. I avoid high calorie beverages, even fruit juice but especially soda. I eat the fruit itself, almost never just the juice because it's so easy to get a load of calories and not feel like you consumed anything. I have a couple "diet books" that I re read occasionally, but they emphasize exercise, portion control, and good basic food, no weirdness. the last one I tried was Dean Ornish but I could not stand the flavorless food. I don't like fatty foods, but close to zero fat was awful. everything was flat and tasteless.

I am seeing an orthopedic doc this morning to get an opinion& probably xrays of my foot. I'm getting around OK, we've ridden, I've used the elliptical and yesterday I did burn sets bi's & tris, and core 1. there is still some clear soreness and tenderness on the outside of my foot and I will be very surprised if I don't have a stress fracture..... I don't know what else it could be. I'm getting ahead of the game a bit here. I also want an opinion on the bunion issue. I'm skipping yoga this morning because if traffic is messy because of the rain, time will get too close.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, that is good news. Nice to have a diagnosis that it's nothing serious. Yes, after you retire you might take up quilting again. I have a friend who is a serious quilter and does all of the actual quilting by hand. For her it is definitely an art and she usually does one a year for an exhibition.

Lori, what a beautiful photograph! This year I think the foliage has been especially spectacular. Unfortunately, it sounds like we are in for several days of "fetch" rain off the ocean and that will probably ruin the foliage.

Valerie, that sounds like a reasonable price for a good little machine. I have, on the other hand, a Bernina with a lot of wonderful electronics that I bought 4 years ago--much more expensive, but I do a lot of sewing and not much mending. Before that I had a Pfaff for several years. The nice thing about electronics is that there is very little oiling--just the bobbin case and wheel. Good luck with your orthopedist!

Have fun in Vegas, Josie, and maybe you can win some $$$$ for a shopping splurge.

Hi to Judy!

Back from the orthopod with some not very good news. it actually is not really a bunion. it is just bad osteoarthritis in that joint but it is not angled outward much at all. however, the joint is pretty much gone. it doesn't bend any more because there is no joint space, just a big solid arthritic bump. it looks pretty awful. Because the joint doesn't bend anymore, it's changing my gait and throwing more stress onto the outside of my foot. there is either a small stress fracture or tendonitis there. so no jumping or high impact stuff, stiffer shoes than I want to wear, or boots and hopefully it will settle down in 2 weeks or so. I need to avoid anything that makes it hurt. the surgery I will be looking at is a joint fusion with a 6 week to 2 month recovery period. 6 weeks with no weight on the foot. that should restore my movement to a more normal gait but I need to read more about this. I'm not sure how soon.

so I can use the elliptical, ride , upper body, pretty much anything that doesn't make the joint or the outside of my food hurt. I won't be doing any hiking for a while unless I try something short and it doesn't hurt but that will take some trials to see. yoga is OK as long as it doesn't cause pain. it's hell getting old....

I'm sorry Valerie, I hope it settles down for you. Is there anything besides surgery that you can do for it?

Good evening ladies!

Today I started Suzanne Bowen's Fit for Fall Challenge. I started out with Cathe's x10 warmup then went into the challenge which consisted of 25 minutes of supported barre and then 15 minutes of upper back of thigh. I then threw in her adv hiit workout which was only about 10 minutes. Ended up being tougher than I thought. Some of her workouts sneak up on you.

Deb...that is great news! You will be feeling better in know time. I wish I knew how to quilt. I had a neighbor years ago that made many beautiful quilts. Perhaps I will learn when I retire!! :). SB is Suzanne Bowen. I am really loving her workouts. Yes beautiful here in the fall but like you we get tons of snow which looks beautiful but you get sick of it real quick.

Valerie...oh no! So sorry to hear of your foot problems. Are you going for a second opinion or do you know your doctor and trust his judgement? Smart to really take it easy for a couple of weeks to let it calm down. If you have the surgery the recovery time will go by quick and then you will be right back at it.

Lynda...I am going to the Cape this weekend and haven't checked the weather. Hoping it clears up. Going with DS and his girlfriend. We have a time share and there is an owners meeting that I like to go to. Then we stay at the time share Thurs thru Sun at a hugely discounted rate. We stayed last year and the 3 of us had a great time. This year we are bringing our bikes so hoping for nice weather.

Judy..I upped the weights on the live butts and guts on Sunday and my legs are still tired from that workout. Was a lot of fun and I can see myself doing this one often.

Hi to Josie!

I'm sorry too..... I hope I can get the secondary issue ...outside foot, to settle down. he said the joint is going to need fusing at some point, and recovery is better and faster when you are "younger" and then the joint will function better. I am going to get at least another opinion but you don't need to be an expert to look at a plain film and see there is no space. Every other joint looked good with space and healthy. Every other joint looks great!. just the one , the big important one, is toast. eventually the other foot may go the same way but who knows? not going to worry about that now. It is not a 'rush" but the toe is barely bending at the joint anymore. just a ball of solid arthritic bone. the good news is that I function pretty well regardless, and my hiking abilities seem not to be impaired. some of dealing with this has to do with wearing stiffer boots so I can't avoid the big joint by rolling off to the outside. a stiff boot won't allow that movement, and that is how people get into secondary issues. nice, don't have to say I have a bunion anymore!
Lori, I think this guy is right because all the pieces fit, and I can see with my own eyes. I could see my toe getting deformed over the last year or so. I still will get another opinion and not rush into anything.

so I did the ch, sh part of Burn sets, and core 1.
