Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/31

Hi everyone--

This morning I did RS with 1 lb gloves (47:50). I think this counts as a core workout too. Or, at least I feel a lot of the moves in my middle.

Judy, yes, smoking sections on planes is a ridiculous idea because everyone is breathing recycled air. It's really been a gradual process of elimination. After that stopped, they confined smoking in plane terminals to bars, then prohibited smoking completely. I guess what has always surprised me a bit is seeing hospital workers on break smoking outside. I think I will try that MM triceps tomorrow as an add-on to CUB (I think it's on there).

Deb, if you are hooked on The Guardian, how many seasons do you have to watch? I'm not sure, but I think he was in another series after that one which was on for a really long time. I think it's probably good that both DA and TGW are in their final seasons. I will miss them, but I think they have run their course.

Diane Sue, another thank you to your husband for his service. One of my sisters lived in Bartlesville for 40 years. Where are you in Oklahoma?

Valerie, I am too lazy to bother with tracking and monitoring anything--probably why I just seem to stay about at the same level of fitness. I guess I am a lazy Cathlete, or is that an oxymoron?

Lori, I agree with Deb, your workmates are very lucky to have a fitness guru all of their own.

Good evening ladies,

No workout this morning but we did 21D Barre Legs at lunch. Today was heavy package day butbthe packages were not really heavy so we felt we needed to workout. Love everyone is back into working out. This was my only workout and feeling good about it. :)

Judy...I think I was typing when you were posting yesterday. Weather has been great here too. Rainy today but I am good with this. I am not a fan of TTM but like the Live version. I jave yet to do any of the MM! I feel I am really missing out here and need to get on this. Good luck on your new rotation.

Deb...I watched Sunday's DA today and all I can say is WOW! The ladies do love me as I love them. The ones that workout are mostly long timers like me. At this point we are more of a family. I took the SB rotation that we are doing and went thru each workout to make sure it would work for the group. When there was a workout I know would be too much (sometimes SB is heavy on planks) then I substituted a workout we have done in it's place. I sent everyone a calendar of the rotation so there are no surprises. They laughed at me but all said they really appreciated it. ;) I am a goof and they know it.

Valerie...xc skiing one day then mountain biking the next. Good for you! I remember Bamboo growing at a local park when I was a kid. I was always fascinated with it.

Lynda..kickboxing always work your core. I love her Live RockmSockm workout too. It is nothing like the DVD with the same name though. Great core workout in both.

Hi to Diane Sue and Josie!

Judy, I have looked at the Garmin. I looked up lots of reviews before I settled on my HR7 Polar. If I continue to have problems I may try one. Polar says they will try to get it back to me quickly. I keep lists and have notebooks with all the particular notes on workouts and premixes and also approximate calories I burn and which body parts they are mainly focused on. I to have used heart rate monitors for years :) Thanks for the link. It looks similar to what I am using. You have a good plan worked out ahead. I still haven't purchased Ice yet. I will eventually though. I have all of Cathe's but Ice.

Lori, that is so nice that you have a group to work out at lunch. Band work is a good idea. I used Cathe's Travel Fit when we went to Cancun on a vacation. I get emails from someone that has nothing but band workouts.

Fox2star, I think I pretty much killed off the bamboo. They had planted it along the outside of the back fence but it moved under the fence and shoots popping up all over. I dug down and pulled out as many rhizomes as I could get and then used Tordon RTU which I had to order from Amazon on the each piece that I cut and along the fence area. It will kill anything so you have to be careful what you get it on. My Dad had tod me about it when I had some horrible vining ivy that had long but thin sharp needles on it. It was covering my shrubs and coming up in the lawn. Now that I had a hard time keeping up with. It works way better than Round up and is meant as a stump killer.

traildoggie, they say that bamboo can get so out of hand it will start growing in the neighbors yards. Our zoo has it and I wondered at that. I guess for the animals. We have had a lot of bikes and a couple of scooters. I have never been adventurous enough to ride them. My husband tried to get me to ride the scooter but I didn't want to. The big bikes are much more comfortable. We had a Gold Wing once and it had the stereo system, and even a heater :) It was really a nice ride. That being said, they scare me. Once going down the freeway there was a 2x4 in the middle of our lane and vehicles on the other side. I was sure we were going to go flying.

Garance, I live in the Oklahoma City area.

Ladies, I hope I learn all of your names soon. Also, I wanted to clarify that my husband was not one of the soldiers. He worked training them and wore the gear, went out on missions with them and was embedded with them. Taught them police tactics. A contractor. He did this in Iraq as well. We definitely are huge supporters of our military and what they do.

Hi Everyone,

I was pretty sore this morning so I decided to do some housecleaning and organizing instead of working out. Tonight I did MM Back.

Diane Sue-I like Polar products too, they have some nice running and multi sport watches out now. A running friend loaned me his Polar HRM in 1995, it was the first time I wore one and I was hooked. They were so expensive at the time that I had to wait another year before I could buy one of my own :)

Lori-I started out thinking I would love TTM, but now I'm having second thoughts. It just wasn't working as well for me yesterday. Maybe I will try the live version again next time and see if I like that better.

Lynda- when I worked at the health food store, several of the other employees were smokers and they would go outside for smoke breaks regularly. MM Triceps is really good, I think you will like it.

Deb-This week's Downton episode was very good. I am going to miss that show when this season ends.
It looks like winter weather is back, it just started snowing and it's getting colder.

Hi to Valerie & Josie!

Judy

Good morning,

Yesterday I did ICE Metabolic Total Body. Another good one. Today is To the Mat....ugh...the dread factor is making me want to switch to Chiseled Lower Body..

Valerie, what season of Downton are you watching? They are "building" a new bike trail really close to us...about 2 miles away but this one will be easily accessible by bike.....I can't wait until it is open officially. All the others have to be driven to with the bikes on the rack. John and I always joke about the bamboo....if you have neighbors you really hate, just sneak over and plant some bamboo somewhere in their yard under the cover of darkness...:).

Lynda, yes, Rock'em Sock'm should count as a core workout...especially if you use 1 pound gloves. I wish there was more kicks in this one. Prime had 3 season free of The Guardian . Not sure if there were more after that, I will need to Google to see. Also will see what other series that actor was in. I like Dabney Coleman in this one too. He plays his father. Are you watching anything on Acorn? I cancelled the membership.

Lori, you should get some extra cudos ( 0r cash!)..from the management where you work....do you know how much of a boost in morale you are providing?

Diane Sue, you NEED to purchase ICE. I think it is Cathe's best series yet. Who is it that has nothing but band workouts? Travel Fit is a great one. I used to take it with me on business trips all the time. Thanks for the tip on that stuff that kills bamboo.....I will be ordering it from Amazon very soon. When those sprouts come up this year, that is what I will try. One of my best friends in high school was killed on a motorcycle...she was 17.I know that are fun but they have scared me since then. Soldier or not, your husband was there and what he did was for our country and the men over there. You will get our names pretty quickly...

Judy, I am with you on TTM...I wish it was all band work. At least there are premixes that reduce the dread factor. Oh no! If you were getting snow yesterday, we will have it today. We always get Michigan weather a day later.

Not much going on here....a workout is all I have planned. John is off so maybe he will want to do something.

Take care,
( Deb)...:)

Hi Ladies,

I did not ride on Sunday because it rained and took off Monday too. Tuesday I went spinning and Karina killed us, Wednesday I went spinning again and today Karina again. I plan on running tomorrow and on Saturday It will be Zumba or spinning and bodypump and Sunday I will be doing a 35 mile ride before the superbowl :). I have to earn my junk food calories.

I went to see my Dr. yesterday to follow up on my blood results for my cholesterol check up, and I'm happy to report that it went down by 40 points, my sugar is still a little bit high, but she said that it was due to heredity, but overall she was very pleased.

Lori, your ladies are so lucky to have you around.

Garance, I'm with you on monitoring anything. I don't like using gadgets while I'm training.

Hi to the rest of the ladies!

Josie

Hi everyone--

This morning I did CUB with core 2 (55:26). I don't know why I thought MM triceps would be an add-on to an upper body workout.

I made Nigella Lawson's chili for Sunday this morning and I will make my cake tomorrow. The house smells delicious. It's nice to have my own personal butcher--DH cut up the shin beef for the chili and I know I would never be able to do that as perfectly as he does. This chili has some semi-sweet chocolate in it which gives it a mole flavor.

Deb, I'm watching a murder mystery on Prime titled Fortitude. I noticed that Stanley Tucci was in it and I really think he's a great actor. I have watched 3 episodes so far and it's pretty good. I kept Acorn and put two series on my watch list--Brief and Justice. They are both courtroom dramas and look good.

Josie, that's a great drop in your cholesterol. Anything particular you are doing that you think accounts for the drop??

Judy, I will have to look for the MM Triceps--this body part always needs more work and to be honest, I don't like the triceps work on CUB. Those half-pushups with your leg up in the air? I don't feel them very much, so I must be doing them wrong.

Diane Sue, I have never been on a motorcycle either. I'm not much of a risk-taker and, of course, get fixated on all the celebrities who have had terrible accidents on cycles--Liam Neeson, Gary Busey (who seems permanently brain-damaged), and Bono.

Lori, I still think you should get extra pay for your work with the ladies. Does your boss notice it at all??

It's restaurant week here in Williamstown, so we are going out to dinner tonight.

Today's workout was Total Body Chisel and 10 minute Ab Chisel, 49 minutes, 241 calories. I had to lower some weights. I went pretty heavy on those 8 reps yesterday. Besides the Total Body today I have Iso Speed Hammer tomorrow and Iso Strength Chisel Saturday. Lots of lifting. I was sore before I started.
Total Body Chisel is 3 sets of 10 reps 3 rounds of three body parts each done a 1 set of each body part done 3 times
Squat 37.5 each hand all 3 sets
Bench Press 22.5 each hand all 3 sets
Reverse grip row 25# each hand all 3 sets

lunge right 25# each hand all 3 sets
lunge left same as right
incline fly 15# each hand all 3 sets
lat pullover 15# each hand all 3 sets I can't believe I had these again today. 45# yesterday. My lats are sore

step down cross back right 15# each hand all 3 sets
step down cross back left 15#
Incline curl 20# each hand; 17.5; 17.5
bench dips no weight 10 reps each set

Judy my first two Polar heart rate monitors were pretty expensive. Even the FT 60 which was the new one when I purchased it was 220.00. I have not spent that much since. I have lots of straps. Fortunately you can get small straps now. My first ones were always too loose. I sewed one up smaller and I still have one that has a safety pin in it. I purchased an extra small once all by itself but the HR7 was available with a small strap so it fits perfect. They used to be one size fits all.

Deb, thanks :) I want Ice but I belong to a check in group to not purchase new workouts. Anyway, I am hoping to ask for it from my family for Mother's Day . That doesn't count as a purchase. I am sort of wanting 21 Day Fix Extreme but, I am on the fence still. I don't see anyone that really says they love it. Hammer and Chisel has Dirty 30 Extreme on one of the discs. I tried that and it seemed similar to some others but she is working faster and with lighter weights. I have such a huge collection of workouts. I forget some are there. I think my family gets tired of having to buy me fitness stuff LOL How sad to lose your friend at 17. I watched my oldest granddaughter now in college grieve over the loss of a friend in high school. It is tough.

Valerie, do you raise animals and butcher or does your husband just butcher? My daughter is raising some cattle with plans to have them butchered. We bought a side and had them cut and packaged how we wanted them. My daughter has 15 acres and they have chickens, cattle, and bees. Also garden. I don't know how they keep up when both work as well. Whenever they leave on vacations they have to have someone stay at there house to take care of the animals.

Here is a link to one of the you tubes with the guy that I get band training e-mails from.

Good evening ladies!

No workout this morning. I planned to do the Cathe Live Gloved up and Ready when I got home. I just finished it and I loved it as I do all her Live Kickboxing. She does Tabatas on the bag during this workout but as usual I use the bag the entire time. At lunch we did SB Upper Body and wow this one bites. We used 3lb weights and boy it was tough. I brought out 5lbs thinking no way would I reduce to 3lbs but yup. I needed too. Funny how I lift so heavy with Cathe but SB kills me with light weights.

Diane Sue...first and foremost...your husband is a hero in my book. I have 21D Fix Extreme. I have not done the cardio workouts but have done all the weight ones. I did these last year with a few coworkers at lunch. They are good workouts but I would not call them extreme. Again, we never did the cardio as the lunch ladies preferred weighted workouts. We love Cancun and go usually every other year. Always so much fun. I too bring travel fit with me but this year with Cathe On Demand it was so much fun to do a workout that I felt like doing at the moment. The hotel we stay at has a great gym so I would bring my Ipad and set up shop and go to town. Thanks for the youtube link on the band exercises. What is the person's name/email? I would like to get the emails also. When we workout at work we do not have enough weights for everyone but have plenty of bands so I try to stick with light weights or band workouts. The Total Body Chisel looked like a great workout.

Judy...I completely understand about TTM. Pretty sure at the moment every one at my office are non smokers. Which is really nice.

Deb...I love the Ice Metabolic workout! I am so sorry to read about your friend. Same thing with my DH. He knew of someone that was killed while riding. That is why I just could not keep doing it to him. He would be a mess until I got home. I completely understand. That is awesome about the bike trail. How many miles will it be? Extra kudos at work will never happen. They are clueless.

Josie...In reading your post and seeing all your workouts and what popped in my mind was...wow! This group of ours really kicks butt! We are a group of some very fit women and I am so glad to be a part of it. Great lab results!

Lynda...omg...your Chili sounds delicious. Be carefull. You live driving distance from me and the way you described that I may show up at your door! Lol! My DH and I love Stanley Tucci. Yes, agree he is a great actor. Funny you should mention tricep pushups. In today's SB workout we did tricep pushups but had one knee on the ground and the other leg straight out with thigh resting on the foot of the leg with the knee on the ground. I know this makes no sense the way I just described but it was very intense.

Hi to Valerie!

I have tomorrow off! And so does DH. He joined a gym that has a pool so we are going together (me as a guest) to workout and swim. He loves swimming laps so this will be good for him. I may hit the sauna though and not go swimming. :)

Lori, here is a link to his website and you can sign up for the newsletters and some free stuff. If you click on his library there are quite a few videos and lots of information. http://resistancebandtraining.com/
We have been to Cancun a couple of times and Jamaica a couple of times. I know our hotels had nice gyms and there were workout classes. Which brings to mind sitting at the tables one morning watching the yoga class and an obviously inebriated woman falling all over trying to do yoga. I always worked out in my room and figured the walks on the beach and swimming (I paddle, definitely not a swimmer) I was good. Once we went to Cancun and forgot what day we were leaving. I guess we were so relaxed we forgot to go home. We had to rush around to make flight reservations etc. for another day. We had our own suite with a hot tub on our balcony. We sat up there and watched fourth of July fireworks over the ocean. It was beautiful.

Deb, we watched the final DA episode last night. wrapped up a little too neatly for my liking but still pleasant. They do some real fast personality switches to get things to moderate out in the ending. I will miss the series.

Good news on a bike trail. I live no more than 2 miles from a trail, but the roads to get there would be suicide. we'd love to be able to ride to the trail, but not going to happen.
We are still watching The Killing, end of second season. wow. what a disappointment. the first season was semi reasonable, although it made law enforcement here look like a bunch of idiots. the second one devolved into a lot of BS and nonsense. this last episode was ridiculous. like a silly stupid soap opera with no one acting like they have even 2 functioning brain cells . not sure we'll even watch the 3rd season. the first season was not my favorite series but this second season is a bad joke.

we went mt biking this morning and rode 1 hr 45 min, covering a lot more ground than usual. If we do this same ride a few tines a week, I really get tougher. can ride up long hills without stopping multiple times. can't compare directly because trails are closed now and need to stick to the roads. that was enough of a workout for the day. Diane Sue...... Garance (Lynda) is the person with the farm and animals. I have a cat and a vegie garden. Don't worry, hard to sort everyone out at first.
Josie, I am on the same page as you... no interest in monitoring with gadgets. I'll check heart rate and time the workout for total minutes. That's about it. as long as I know I worked hard, I'm good with that.

Good morning,

It's Friday! No workout yesterday, I did not sleep well the night before and could not get into it.

Josie, that is great news on the cholesterol number! 40 points, that's awesome! What is your secret? Did you eliminate something? Add something? Mine only went down 11 points, but all the separate numbers improved too so DR was happy.

Lynda, that chili recipe sounds delicious, John would love it, anything Mole! How can I get that recipe? I added Fortitude to my Prime watch list, it does look good. There is only one season correct?

Diane Sue, great workout! Thanks for the link, I will look into those workouts. I think we are all in that club of people that have more workouts than they could ever do. :) Every couple of years I cull out the ones I never do and sell them on Ebay. Your description of Cancun makes me want to go again.

Lori, yes, having Cathe on demand is a great thing for traveling. When my friend was killed on the motorcycle, my SIL was so upset, my brother immediately sold his bike. To make it even more upsetting was that it was a hit and run and the guy who did it was never was arrested. We all knew who it was too. He had come out of a bar and left the scene because he was drunk. No one could prove it though. How great that your DH is going to take up swimming for exercise! Not sure about the new bike trail yet, nothing has been published about it..people were using it last year, against signs posted etc.

Valerie, were you watching season 6 of Downton? the actual last season? How did you do that? Good to know about the second season of The Killing. I would only watch it if they make it free on Prime anyway.

Judy, we never got your snow....how are the kitties doing?

A workout, then meeting my friend for breakfast. Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Deb...I just finished up watching season 6 also. My friend bought the dvd's perhaps on Amazon? I think it is on Prime already too (but not free). The series is long over in England so makes sense it is on DVD already. Not sure why the broadcast lag to America. If I remember a couple years ago another friend actually found the current season at the library before it had finished broadcasting here. Crazy!

Lori,

You're right! My library has quite a few copies, but they are all checked out or on a waiting list. I guess I will finish watching on PBS...since by the time I get the DVD's the season will be over!

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Bootcamp (44:50).

Deb, you can find the recipe at LiveKellyandMichael.com under recipes and they have a list of all the chefs. It's really easy if you have a good butcher to cut up the shin beef for you. I guess you could also use a chuck roast cut up as well. It's easy, but it certainly makes a lot. I usually freeze what is left over after the Superbowl and a couple more meals. Kelly also has a great recipe for a baked artichoke dip that I think I will try, after cutting it in half.

Diane Sue, I am the one with the husband who raises grass-fed beef, pigs, and free-range chickens, definitely not Valerie, who is mostly vegetarian. We have 135 acres in the Berkshires. You can find his Facebook page if you google East Mountain Farm and look for Williamstown. Lots of pictures of our place, the animals, and Max who is our official greeter. I'm a retired professor, still doing some writing.

Lori, you can definitely stop by for some chili on Sunday! Not sure you also want some of the other calorie rich food we will be serving. The Milky way cake is very dense and I had forgotten that it calls for 1 1/2 C. of butter and 6 giant bars of Milky Way. The house smells divine today again, but this time it's chocolate and caramel, not mole.

Our prix fixe meal was excellent last night. A gorgeously plated salad with trout, a short rib on a bed of red cabbage, pierogi, and Boston cream pie. The chef also sent out a plate of liver pate, compliments of Mezze, because DH supplies so much of their meat. They are planning a CarHartts and Cocktails event in a couple weeks for local farmers, followed by a whole comfort Sunday meal based on DH's pork.

I don't really care who wins this weekend, but I will enjoy the commercials and the half-time show anyway.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Valerie, thanks for pointing me to the right names. I keep thinking I am getting them right, sorry. Our housing addition is near a lake and we have a park with walking and cycling trails . Also one lane is dedicated to cyclists . I don't own a bike. We have a friend that rides the area all of the time and he is the one who alerted us to the home we have now. I take my dog walking that way sometimes or out by the pond area since we are below the damn. I will only go on the road side of the park area and trails though because I don't want to be out in the woods by myself for safety reasons. I would like to get my husband to go walking with me.

Deb, I really did have to cul out my workouts when we moved because we downsized to over 1000 square foot smaller house with a much smaller garage and not the storage space we had before. I put most of them into a couple of binders and just kept the sleeves to them because I had so many I ran out of room on two sets of book shelves plus I kept the lesser used ones in cabinets that were where the roof sloped down in my workout/ game room upstairs. It is nice that I can just grab a case and carry it with me if I want to. One is mostly all Cathe workouts :) I left the ones in cases like the X train series and Low Impact series etc.. No real plans for the weekend. We generally have a family brunch after church at my daughter's house which is always fun. We play card games and I get to enjoy the grandchildren. Funny I have two age group sets, 21 months, 5, 8 , then 15, 15, 16, 18, 19. We seriously thought the older crew was going to be it then we got some more. My one daughter has the baby, the 8 year old and a 15 year old. He is a great big brother.

Lynda, thanks for sharing some about yourself. I will go check out your pictures. So you are retired but not completely retired :) My husband retired and is still working other jobs. With insurance etc. costs can't afford to completely retire.
Your land sounds wonderful. I go to Sprouts and try to track down grass fed meats and poultry. Sometimes if I want ground pork , I buy a good pork roast and run it through my food processor. Then I don't have to worry about what is in it. My daughter is a doctor and her husband a policeman getting near to retirement possibility. They wanted to be self sufficient so that is what got them started. Actually they have shared back and forth with their neighbors bull and their bulls. Sometimes they have opened up the pasture area and shared. This is their first year at bee keeping. They started with chickens. She shares eggs and garden stuff with me. Last year they had deer and and other animals clean off their fruit trees while they were on vacation. Their chickens roam free. I only buy free range eggs when I buy them. There is so much in sneaky wording to eggs. Cage free doesn't mean much. Their dogs have been pretty good with not killing the chickens. I think one did when she was a pup. They have two labs. I have a black lab and a very tiny yard :)

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a 1 hour indoor bike ride and today I did Chiseled Lower Body, MM Shoulders, & an ab segment from CTX. It was about 74 minutes total workout time and 359 calories on my Garmin.
It was very cold and windy last night but no more snow. It did get icy out. We went to Home Depot last night and had to be very careful as there was black ice everywhere. DH was looking at paint and I picked up a couple of packages of the gym flooring mats. I'm adding an extra row. After doing a little reorganizing, I found I had room to do that. I'll have to take pictures when I get it done.

Deb-I'll have to look at the TTM premixes.
I'm very sorry about your friend's accident :( I lost a couple of friends to accidents in high school too, and one of my running friends lost her teenage daughter to a motorcycle accident almost 20 years ago. My friend was never the same after that. It was a devastating loss.

The kitties have been doing great! They sleep all day and play all night. At least I have company if I can't sleep :)

Josie- great job on lowering your cholesterol! Enjoy your ride this weekend!

Lynda-I don't care for the tricep pushups either. I prefer overhead presses or lying extensions. Those seem to work best for me. I think MM Triceps is one of the most effective tricep workouts I've done. I had DOMS for several days afterwards.
I've never ridden on a motorcycle either.

Diane Sue- I remember the loose HRM straps from the 90's. I was always having to readjust them as they kept slipping. I ended up using a safety pin too. Thanks for the link to the resistance band site. That looks interesting. I signed up for the emails too.

Lori- The live kickboxing workout looked like fun! I plan to do it soon. The new gym sounds like fun! I used to love using the sauna when I belonged to a bigger gym.

Valerie-awesome mountain biking! I really need to get back outside and do more riding this year.

Here's a couple of photos of Chino & Shadow that I took this week.

Judy
