Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/3

Morning,

Yesterday I did ICE Metabolic Total Body, but did the mishmash timesaver. It was a perfect length for me. I agree with all....tired of winter and it hasn't really started yet. I keep thinking we are going to pay for that mild December.

Lynda, I finished the DM series last night...I liked it a lot. How was the signing up for the free trial of Acorn? What does a Thunderbolt do and how does it help with writing? I am so behind in computer technology! I think I will try RS next time with weighted gloves as well...maybe .5 pounds to start with.

Judy, as John would say, our blood has not thickened enough for this kind of cold...usually at this time of year we have gradually gotten into lower temps and we can tolerate it. Even 30 degrees seems bitter to me right now. Good job on stretching/foam rolling...I need to do more of that.

Lori, sorry about Chester's ear...maybe they need to change the anti-biotic...remember Kylee's eyes? she was actually allergic to the first anti-biotic and had to change to a different one that worked for her...yes, I think the morning after sharing a bottle of wine would be difficult to get up and do workout...:). It's great that you and your DS's GF are that close that you can do that.

Valerie, great hike! does your knee bother you at all when you do all of that? I agree, anti-biotics are not working as they used to, I think it's because there are so many in our foods (meat) now. Like Judy said, I am sure there are foam roller workouts on YouTube that you can put on your iPad and try out. This way they are free and if you don't like it, you just delete it and find another one. :).

A workout, and then taking John's car this morning to have a remote starter put in.

Take care,

Deb, mostly not bothersome. occasionally a step is a uncomfortable but my 'good" leg is the same. especially in heavy nasty snow, your foot and leg can get tweaked and jerked around. it's fairly steep and relentlessly uphill. on snowshoes I don't think it's even possible to favor one leg. if we don't get more snow we probably won't do this one again. it's in a private timber area and it looks a lot nicer when the stumps are buried in snow. surprisingly has lots of wildlife although all we see are tracks and critter poop. some big elk.
I don't think this knee issue will ever go away completely but I should be able to improve it. at this point, deep knee bends cathe style are not good. If I do deep bends slowly and purposefully, they are OK. but as we all know, Cathe doesn't do "slow" too often. I was tweaking my knee position, and letting the left leg do more of the work, going down lopsided. so left got even stronger, and right knee wandered more. I'll be doing a lot of stuff, but nothing where my knee is allowed to "maltrack". this is a common issue for runners, it's not an really an "old person's issue. there is good joint space, I have good cartilage there. when I look ay my numbers for only one year..I took 57,000 steps uphill and downhill just on formal hikes. it will take some work to rebuild muscle and muscle memory to track better.

Lori did they suggest doing hot soaks on chester's ear? often that is a part of treatment. don't do unless vet approves though, as I don't know what part of his ear is involved

Judy thank you for that link. Is this what you do? I am impressed with how much upper body gets involved in doing foam rolling.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Ice Metabolic total body (47:53).

Deb, the Thunderbolt display is a 27 inch screen with a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. You just hook up the laptop and then work with the wireless keyboard, and the documents are nice and big to work with. Still haven't looked at DM. Maybe tonight I will take a look. I was going to take a look, but then started the second season of American Crime, which is superb. Wonderful actors--the same ones from last year, but re-cast in new roles for a new narrative.

Lori, we have soapstone counters--basically black, but this particular slab of soapstone from Brazil had more than the usual deep green veins in it. I fell in love with it. Not as shiny as granite except when I have recently rubbed it with mineral oil. The nice thing about soapstone is you can put hot pans on it. Poor Chester! I know what you mean about how expensive vet bills are these days. Last month DH put down 600 dollars total for all the annual stuff and then, because Max was rubbing off the flea and tick stuff around his neck after application, we had to switch to an oral medication that is much more expensive. Sounds like a great plan with the ladies if they like barre. Impossible not to like SB.

Judy, whenever my sons are home they ask if I want a foam roller. I always tell them I wouldn't know what to do with it, but I will take a look at this video.

Despite your knee problem, Valerie, you have managed to do a lot of working out, and maybe this was just a wake up call to ensure more years of an active life.

Hi to Josie!

Lynda, I am very confident this will get better. I KNEW I was doing it but didn't know how to stop it. I was working around it, by bending unevenly. in front of a mirror, I can't kid myself. I have done it for a long time and I really don't know how it got started. my legs look identical but when I do step ups, the left is much stronger. and once it was str9onger, it got into a self perpetuating cycle.

I'm rolling outer upper thigh and hamstring area. I don't feel 'tight" there but doing what is suggested. I got a hard foam roller. they are color coded. Your triceps and shoulders get worked supporting yourself in the process, which is not that easy. He is having me do bridges with my feet on a foam roller.... do you want to know where your hamstrings are? Try it! Yowza.

Mammogram done. hopefully done until next year.

we restarted The Killing. I remember it fairly well, but I'm sure it stopped at 2 seasons then. the rain is exaggerated. we hardly EVER get thunder with it. I'm enjoying it so far. I am more used to series where things don't get completed in 120 minutes like movies. I like the pacing in most series better.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was CUB 4 Crawls. This is what I named it since I took out 4 of the bear crawls. 4 is just the amount for my shoulders. I can't wait to try out today's Live Low Impact workout. It's 35 minutes and looked like fun.

Judy...thanks for that link. I have a foam roller but hardly use it. I am sure there are videos on YouTube but I just never get around to looking.

Valerie...wow that is alot of snowshoeing! Like I said before it amazes me you can do what you do without being in complete agony. We have spent a small fortune on our two dogs. It really is sickening how much Vet bills cost. But what are you going to do? They did not suggest any hot soaks. We'll see how this wax works.

Deb...we have tried 3 antibotics now. Nothing seems to be working. It is very stubborn. I'll have to try out the shorter Metabolic. Sounds like it will be good to tie in with another shorter workout. Born and raised here and my blood has never thickened. I hate the cold. :( We love our remote starts. Never will not have one.

Lynda...the soapstone sounds really nice. Some day we will get there. We may move before we do though. We both want to go South, closer to my inlaws. Ohhh the warmth. How do you feel about George R.R. Martin not having Book 6 out before season 6 starts? I was really hoping to have the book read beforehand.

Hi to Josie!!!

Hi Everyone,

I deviated from the ICE rotation today and did a 90 minute Spinerval+Strength dvd, "Ultra Total Body". Roughly 45 minutes on the bike and 45 minutes strength & core. It wasn't as comprehensive of a strength workout as Cathe's but still good. Tomorrow I will be back to ICE.

Deb-it was almost 50 degrees here today. It felt very comfortable. Amazing how much difference 20 degrees makes.

Valerie-yes, that is the dvd I use for most of my foam rolling. I really like rolling out my back. The hardest for me is my IT band. It's very painful to roll out, so I guess that is the area where I need the most work.

Lori-I haven't used my foam roller much recently. I think I'm going to try doing the dvd once a week and get into the habit of using it that way.

Hi to Lynda & Josie!

Judy

Good morning & Happy Friday!

This month is flying by, before you know it, we will be talking about spring. Yay! Maybe snow will pass us by completely. If only.

Valerie, even if the knee issue does not to away 100%, at least you know you can keep it in a place that allows you to keep doing what you like to do. I found out that seasons 3 & 4 of The Killing are not free on Prime..:(

Lynda, I watched the first episode of A Place to Call Home season 3. I had watched already on that strange video link I found, but wanted to start it from the beginning. One think I like about getting the actual DVD's is the bonus footage that they put on. The ones for Doc Martin were really interesting to see. The town they film in is so great. What a nice place to live. Is American Crime on Prime?

Lori, love the name of your "redo" of the workout with less Bear Claws! :) I hate the cold as well, but it seems if it starts gradually, I can tolerate it by mid-winter, not shiver at 35 degrees like I do now.

Judy, great workout! I saw your calorie burn over at MFP. Nice. Those foam roller moves sound painful.

Hi Josie,

Blood work today at 5:30. I hope my cholesterol went down at least a few points, my physical is next Friday and if it didn't my DR and I will be having that "conversation" about meds for it.

Meeting my friend for coffee this morning. Maybe squeeze in a workout before...

Take care,

Good morning. I did a 15 min warm up on the elliptical and therapy exercises. If I crank the elliptical right up to "10" and go fast, 15 min is a very good warm up and does not bother my knee one bit. then floor work from LBB and core 1. by the time I do all the therapy exercises, that was better than an hour. lot of them use a band. I'm getting good at firewalkers. I did 20 bridges with my feet on the roller. Oh yes, this activates the hamstrings! I will get to the new workouts in time. did the foam roller on ham strings and my right thigh. I'm not sure I'm willing to add much more rolling. very unpleasant. I'll keep doing what I am now.
yes Judy, the IT band area...why is that so unpleasant? ( rhetorical question) Hams feel pleasant, not so the IT band.
snowshoeing is hard for me. my natural stride is too close together to allow for most snowshoes. I have long narrow ones but I won't kid you, it's a lot of work. Not fluffy powder snow either, but heavy, crusty nasty "cascade concrete". still, a lovely day out and if you set a moderate pace and keep going, it's a great endurance workout. there's no way to favor one leg. we took a half hour lunch break at the high point.
I think the knee issue will just become something I will live with. I will need to be vigilant about keeping both knees working equally.

Deb, we're watching The Killing on Netflix streaming. we dropped Hulu. can always add it when we run out of content on netflix. bear crawls/claws ..I think I wasn't doing them right. I don't . remember them being so bad.

Deb, good luck on those cholesterol numbers. DH's numbers aren't good but he can't take statins though he's tried several times. a lot of people take them easily and then forget about watching their diet. we eat almost the same thing, my numbers are great, his crummy. makes no sense. he eats more than I do. I eat about half of what he does. when we eat out he eats bacon and french toast, things I don't make home anymore. I'm the gal with the salad, dressing on the side.

we're going mt biking today. still kind of cold for road biking. 35-40

Hi everyone--

This morning I did ICE Bootcamp (44:41). My major modifications on this one are to stay at 6 inches on my step and do regular instead of one arm burpees. I still feel worked out.

Deb, I have no idea whether American Crime is on Prime. We have cable, so I watch it on ABC. Good luck on the cholesterol! Funny--I always do the physical first and the blood work later. Then I usually look up my results at the patient portal and get a call from the nurse telling me everything looks good.

Judy, it's finally back up in the 30s today, and it feels so much better than the last few days of sub-freezing temps.

Lori, yes, it's irritating that George R.R. Martin can't finish his opus. I do think there was a falling off after Book 3--or at least I wasn't as absorbed in reading him. I am eagerly anticipating Book 3 by Justin Cronin this fall: The Passage, The Twelve, and one more I have pre-ordered from Amazon.

Valerie, we only go snowshoeing when the snow is recent and fluffy. Too much work otherwise for me. It's great exercise and if you can put up with the crust, more power to you!

I think I will be seeing Spotlight this weekend--about the Boston Archdiocese coverup of sexual abuse and the reporters at the Boston Globe that broke the case. It's been nominated for a few Golden Globes and has already had a lot of critical praise

Have a great weekend everyone!

We did our planned mt bike today. we managed to pick the one area where the fog didn't burn off. still fun! 40-ish but sunny feels so much warmer. about 2 hours 15 min riding. . we added some new trail sections today and they were mostly good. we don't do big mileage but must be getting faster because we can get much more done in 2 hours than we used to. this is a state park with lots of interconnecting trails that loop so you can add sections and still not end up too far away.

Lynda, I am looking forward to seeing Spotlight. I hope it's as good as the reviews suggest. Looking forward to hearing what you think. we were listening to a podcast interview today with Dan Rather. did you ever see Truth? on my Netflix queue. I think we will go to a theater to see Revenant. I knew the story of Hugh glass and the reviews sound like it will be brutal and scenic and probably best seen in a theater.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was Ice Bootcamp. First time I have done this one. I have done the Live version but not the DVD. I did use 2 rises then increased to the 3 as she did. I liked this one.

Deb...I need to do better with my cholesterol. My Dr has suggested meds but I have yet to take them. I wish you luck!

Judy...I deviate all the time from my rotations. I always get back on track and most times make up the workouts when I can and if not I just carry on!

Valerie...bridges using a band with feet on a roller ..yes I can see how this would activate the hamstrings. I also agree that using the roller on the IT band area is uncomfortable. Have done it a few times and frankly it just hurts so I pretty much stopped altogether. Perhaps if I had kept with it, it would get easier and less painfull.

Lynda...for some reason 1 arm burpees do not bother my shoulders so I have no problem with these yet I hate the bear crawls. Makes no sense to me. I have not heard of that book you mentioned by Juston Cronin. I will look him up as I am always looking for something to read.

Looking forward to your reviews on Spotlight. I am still trying to see Starwars!

My plan this weekend is to install the backsplash and select paint. We are leaning towards grey but not set on it.

Hi to Josie!!

Hi Everyone,

I did a Spinerval this morning. When I got up I just felt like I needed to ride. I'll be back to the ICE rotation next week.

Deb & Lori-that makes 3 of us trying to lower our cholesterol. I have to go the doctor later this month and I know he and DH are going to be pushing me to take meds if it isn't lower. Deb-I hope your test results are good.

Lori-I deviated again today but I will be back on track next week. It's hard to stay on one rotation when there are so many workouts to do..

Valerie-I've never been snow-shoeing. It sure sounds like a great workout.

Lynda-I'm looking forward to seeing your review on Spotlight too. It sounds like a good one.

Hi to Josie!

Have a great weekend!

Judy

Good morning,

Yesterday I did ICE Low Impact Sweat #1 with Icy Core -2. I can't do the side planks in core workout, but I just do what I can....someday maybe. Well I went to the blood lab at 5:30 am yesterday after a 12 hour fast, and the DR office never sent in my order....I wasn't happy believe me. It is now rescheduled for Monday. I am back on IF )Intermittent Fasting) so the fasting is no big deal, it was just going and not getting it done.

Valerie, yes, the elliptical is probably one of the best workout devices for low or no impact. I wonder if To the Mat would be good for you to try...lots of band work. It's really strange how cholesterol works.

Lynda, really liking the new episodes of A Place to Call Home. My DR likes to go over the numbers when I am in the office, so he has me go a week before the scheduled visit.

Lori, funny how we all like or dislike different exercises, I think I like the ones that are easy for me....isn't that the way it is for most people? We should be doing the hard ones, those are the ones our bodies need most. You are making me want to paint our kitchen.

Judy, deviation is ok....if it keeps your interest up, and you certainly don't have a problem sticking to workouts! I have tried different things this go around, that they claim can lower cholesterol, like eating an ounce of almonds almost daily, getting more fiber...but not really consistently. I just do not want to take the meds.

Hi Josie!

No plans for the weekend, I have a Loft gift card from last Christmas that I think I should use, so maybe a trip to the outlet mall.

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not posting. I have been trying to take a break from social media, but one you are hooked it is very hard. The peanuts left on Tuesday night, but I did manage to go spinning on Tuesday morning. I took a rest day on Wednesday and went to bodypump on Thursday and ran yesterday. Today I plan on going to bodypump and warming up with Zumba and tomorrow I will be doing a 38 mile ride. Karina has been sick for the past 3 weeks, but hopefully we will see her next week.

We are going to go see The Hateful Eight while my cleaning lady is working and maybe grab some lunch. It is a 3 hour movie with a 10 minute intermission :).

All of you seem to be liking the new ICE workouts.

I will be back later.

Josie

After I'd posted yesterday (while dinner was in the oven) I got down and did most of the therapy exercises. squats, lunges, band work, firewalkers, bridges on the roller, stretching and rolling. didn't do the step ups. my thighs got plenty of work yesterday riding. I can do most of the moves in the living room with the TV news going. I've been trying to follow WW again but weighed this morning and exactly the same. no gain over the holidays although I didn't eat any goodies. I've been very hungry a lot, waking up at night with my stomach growling, so I was hoping for something positive. no luck. I will trade my cholesterol numbers for weight loss with someone!
I have looked at To The Mat and I think it will work fine for me. by the time I do some low impact cardio and therapy, I have easily done an hour plus. yesterday I ended up doing almost 3 hours of work.

we also have no weekend plans. some garden work after it warms up a little. don't think the ground is frozen so we can transplant some big plants we wanted to move.

wow Deb, I would NOT be a happy camper. how sloppy is that! a 12 hr fast, an extra drive ...I would have tried to coerce them into doing the draw anyway with orders to follow. DH's cholesterol seems to improve if he eats fewer carbs, not "no carb" but if he subs vegies and fruit for some of the bread and cookies. mine stays good but no cookies, but I'm doing somewhat fewer carbs because the WW program has gone that direction. I have trouble hitting the numbers though because things like lentils, quinoa, beans, grains have jumped in point value and I eat a lot of those.

Deb, how are things going with the bike? have you tried it ? Hopefully John is using it a little.

It's funny because a couple weeks ago cousin wanted to see Star Wars and DH and I didn't, at least not with the holiday crowds, and I suggested Spotlight, but it was nowhere to be found. Truth seemed to disappear in an instant too. there are movies I think benefit from the big screen, while others are better at home. I think both Truth and Spotlight will be fine and maybe better for me at home. Revenant sounds like a better-on-big screen one.
