Good Morning,

Today I did the Total Body Timesaver from Muscle Max, 59 minutes 377 calories. I have put together a rotation using this workout, KickMax and some Cardio Coaches for this week. Hopefully I will be able to stick to it.

Keegan's agility instructor has to cancel classes indefinitely because her husband slipped on the ice and was in the ICU for 9 days over Chrismas, brain damage, is home but needs 24/7 care....scary. She e-mailed all of us to plead with us to get these things called YAKTRAX that go over your shoes or boots if you have to walk anywhere..she said she has worn them for years, especially when walking her dogs....her husband has them but just didn't put them on at that moment....John and I are going out to get some of these this afternoon....sometimes our walks in the morning with the dogs are trecherous...

Garance, I looked all over that website and could not find that workout series at all....I wish I would have known you were selling KickMax, I would have bought it from you instead of buying it new from Cathe....

Cathy, you were up really late!

Hi to Valerie, and the vacationing ladies, Josie & Joan...

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Physique 57, the "classic" workout at 57 min.

Deb, I couldn't find BBL at first when I went to the site. Then I hit on Beach Body at the site and the message was that she would either have some of these workouts or would have them sent from BB, so I went ahead and ordered and she had 11 of them in stock. I think her name is Mary. They mention her a lot over at Videofitness as the best on quick deliveries, prices, and postage.

That's so sad about your friend. DH has thought about getting those for me but worries that I wear too many different pairs of boots and shoes. I know that they sell them at Eastern Mountain Sports. It's really snowy here and just seems to keep on snowing. A big white powdery souffle. Think I will go snowshoeing this afternoon for a while.

They finally turned the heat back on in office buildings. They turn everything off while the students are gone in the hopes of saving money (this is the second year they have done this, and I think it's a stupid idea because I like to work when things are quiet here). In another office building, the sprinkler system went off and ruined about 18 offices, and speculation is that the bone chilling temperatures on 29-30 were responsible. Not too much money saved and a lot of very very unhappy faculty who have ruined books, ruined files, ruined carpets and office furniture. Wonder what they will do next year.

Monday

Good Morning,

Today I did Cardio Coach #7, 45 minutes, 378 calories burned. This was a really good one, I liked it a lot. I only got through the first challenge and half of the second. If I had more time I would have tried to finish the second challenge.

Garance, I think I will wait on ordering any more DVD's for now. Let me know what you think of this series. DH and I did go get the Yaktrax yesterday and I am planning on just putting them on the boots I walk the dogs with and leaving them on those. We got a lot of snow yesterday too. DH had to snow blow and he was feeling terrible. I felt terrible watching him but I have no idea how to run the darn thing, I should probably have him show me one if these days. How dumb are those people that take care of your office buildings? Turn the heat off? I can see lowering it to around 55-60 to save money, but off?

Weigh in is tomorrow morning, I hope I didn;t gain too much over the holidays. I have to go to Palm Springs for our annual Association meeting and am dreading packing. I know my summer clothes will not fit.

Anyone have any ideas on what to pack for Palm Springs resort wear?

Joan, Josie are you back yet?

Cathy, how was that horseback riding?

Valerie, what's up for you today?

Have a great day!

I've done something every day except one. one day I did a bike warm up, 15 on the treadmill, and disk 7. yipes, that was a killer and I'll be repeating it. I couldn't find my worksheet for 7 or 8 so guessed at the weights as I went along, which didn't help. I printed one so the next will be more organized. I did not do #6, dh and I were going to do it together and we got distracted by other things and ended up taking a day off, so I need to do that one probably today. yesterday we went on a brisk but pleasant walk in a park nearby, a couple miles uphill and down. not a killer but pleasant.

I don't have yaktrax but have Stabilicers. they were a little more expensive but you can replace the traction screws on the soles as they wear down. Not sure if that is worth the cost difference but we use stabilicers a lot. they work GREAT but it's important to take them off when you get onto smooth floors, like after you negotiate the grocery store parking lot, stop in the doorway and remove them. traction devices are as treacherous on smooth floors as the ice itself. I didn't find out the hard way but it would be easy to forget, get past the icy stuff, and then fall on your a$$ inside.

My brother fell on some ice a few years ago and had a very bad rotator cuff tear. he's had numerous surgeries, not fixable. he'll never work again in the field he was in. it changed his entire life and not for the better.

Happy New Year Ladies,

I'm back and I'm going trough all of my e-mails. I ended up getting sick during the holidays because of my grandkids. They both had the flu like last year and I ended up getting to. My workout plans went out the window, so I feel like I have to start from scratch.

Deb, when is your trip to Palme Springs? We are having temperatures in the 70's right now, but it gets cold at night. You can bring casual wear and a few sweaters and a light coat for the evenings. Where are you staying?

Garance, I wish I could go snowshoeing with you, I have not seen snow in years. I still have not tired p57, but I plan to do it as soon as I get rid of my cough.

Hi Joan, Cathy and Valerie!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie (welcome back!), Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Step Moves for the second time (44 min.). Still some rough patches, but I do like it and was working up a sweat. Went snowshoeing yesterday afternoon for awhile too.

Deb, Palm Springs sounds like heaven after all the snow we have had. I went to Borrego Springs several years ago after an MLA convention in San Diego, and was struck by how cool it was at night in the desert. So Josie's recs sound right. The snow finally stopped last night, but now they are predicting another burst of snow showers on Wednesday. That's probably the best strategy on boots. Just dedicate a pair to walking the K & K cuties.

Josie, sorry you were sick over the holidays. I finally did manage to get the H1N1 shot, so I am immune to my students for both the seasonal and swine flu.

Valerie, I don't even take notes on STS. I won't do what bores me, and so I just wing it. You will probably do much better on strength gains than I because of my being stubborn!

Are you back, Joan?

Hi Cathy!

Tuesday

Good morning,

No workout this morning, :( I have been up since 3 am, I think I have gotten DH's cold. I thought I would try to get some sleep.., so I turned off my workout alarm, and ended up awake at 3 anyway.

Valerie, we looked at those stabilicers too, but decided to get the mid-range YakTrax, which were $30 a pair. The cheaper ones at $20 were plastic and did not look like they would last as long. We will only use them for walking the dogs. Sorry to hear about your brother. The man that fell has a very bad head injury. We are praying there is nothing permanent.

Josie, it seems like everyone I talk to is sick..thanks for the tips on the clothing for my trip..not sure where I am staying, some resort hotel. I have to remember that it cools down a lot at night in CA.

Garance, have you tried Travel Fit yet?

Hi to Joan, hope you had a good trip.

the biggest criticism of Yaktrax is the cheaper ones break quickly. DH and I have stabilicers and also Kahtoola microspikes ( for mountain conditions) they slip on easily like yaktrax and are lighter than stabilicers. I like the stabilicers a lot but you need to sit down to get them on right, not a big deal unless there's a lot of on/off.

Thanks for your kind thoughts, it WAS too bad about my brother. he was working at a job in Indiana a few years ago and went to throw some salt down but fell himself. He didn't get medical attention right away and his rotator cuff was not fixable. he has since fallen off a ladder and torn the other one. I'm not sure how many surgeries he's now had but maybe 5, and is barely functional. he had an intense industrial job involving lifting heavy weight that is out of the question now. Hope the friend that fell does OK.

Did disk 6 (legs) after a bike warm up and a mile on the treadmill. sore this morning but not overall, just outside hip/thigh area. I did the whole disk, including the leg blast. a couple moves I don't do weights on. the wall squats are improving and I think next time I'll use 5's. I haven't been able to get down to pick up the weights but I think I had my feet in too close. I'm more stable if I move them out a couple inches. the sit-and-stands I don't know. just can't seem to do that move without a lot of arm action for momentum.

garance, I print a workout sheet for each disk and write down the weight used with an up or down arrow. It speeds things up. there are so many different exercises it's much faster if I know what I used, plus it's cool to see progress.

sorry to hear everyone has colds/flu. all those holiday get togethers sure pass the viruses around. everyone's sick at DH's office so he will probably be next, and that means my number will be up after him. we both had flu shots but a headcold is hard on me and everyone who needs to deal with me.

Wow, turning the heat off? Down but not off would make more sense. Water damage is so expensive... takes months before the full extent is even known.

today is yoga and disk 7, tomorrow will be long cardio.

We are wet and raining, raining a lot. last year we had snow so I am not complaining. It's pretty but such a mess for getting around. palm springs or anything sunny sounds awful good right now.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did the short P-57 for upper body plus 2 miles with Leslie (60 min.).

Nope, have not tried Travel Fit yet. Probably on Friday.

After the mildest November that I can remember ever, we are really getting hit with WINTER big time in the Northeast. A lot of snow, and it just seems to come in little spurts, but never really to stop.

Sorry you are not feeling well, Deb. I hate colds, but I haven't had one for over a year. DH is convinced if you suck those Coldeeze drops continuously over a couple days that you can stop a cold in its tracks. Not sure that works for me, though, and I hate the taste of them after awhile.

Valerie, that is really too bad about your brother. Has he found another type of work?

Reality has set in and I am getting my course packets ready for second semester. Darn!

Hump Day!

Good Morning,

The cold is a little better today, so I decided I would take one more rest day. I think sleep is the best thing for me right now. If I could get the dogs to stop having to go out in the middle of the night the sleep would be even better.

Valerei, yep, the guy at Eastern Mountain Sports said the same thing about the cheaper Yaktrax..they break after a while. I hope the mid-range ones last at least for the rest of the winter. Like I mentioned, we don't plan on going on long walks or anything, just the one in the morning with the dogs. I can't do those sit n' stands either, I don't think they are good for your knees... or the wall squats! Maybe you are right and I was standing incorrectly.... I also print the workout sheets for each workout and record what I do. I am like that about things....If I don;t record something, it's like I didn;t do it! Especially using the HRM..love recording how many calories burned.

Garance, maybe I should get some of those lozenges...this is the second cold this season for me and that is not normal. I think it's when I am stressed and not sleeping well, my resistance is low or something. Too bad about having to go back to teaching every day. I think if I took a year off, I would be done with it! No way you could get me to go back.

Hi to Josie, Joan & Cathy!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Cardio Barre (55 min.). Gosh this is tough! I think my legs are really getting a workout this week.

Oh, Deb, I don't teach every day. My classes are on Tuesdays and Fridays, back to back from 1:10-2:25 and 2:35-3:50. I love teaching, but the grading is what really gets to me. I think I have read whatever 18-22-year-olds have to say on Shakespeare multiple times. Nihil novum sub sole ("nothing new under the sun"). For awhile I would come up with these really quirky paper topics in the hope that I would read something new. That was a disaster! So I returned to pretty straightforward topics.

Hope you feel better soon, Deb. DH swears by those lozenges, but you have to start taking them early he believes. I think Josie likes something called emergen-c (?)

Are you back, Joan, or in hiding?

Valerie, I know what you mean about those wall-squats--you have to have your legs out far enough to make them work. I was lousy at them and the sit-and-stands.

Hi to Cathy!

Hi Ladies,

I will not be working out until tomorrow; I feel about 80% now and will see how it goes tomorrow. I'm a bit tired, I had to take my DS to San Diego, and he finally left on his deployment yesterday. He had to fly to Dallas then to London and then to Bahrain (sp).
I know my poor DS is very tired by now.

Deb, I do use Emergen-C all the time. These also give you energy.

Garance, time went by so fast did you finish with your writing?

Valerie, I also don't like wall squats, I can do 1000 regular ones, but I hate the wall ones.

Hi Cathy.

Josie

I'm back.

We flew in just in time to have the snow start. We're supposed to get 8 inches. I'll read last weeks posts to catch up later.
I think I may have gained 10lbs. Tomorrow I have to really get serious about my diet.

I think I told you we took my sil and db with us to Las Vegas this time. We had a great time but I think we ate more frequently with them there.
I was playing $5 dollar poker($25 per hand) and hit a royal. I won $20,000. They wouldn't give me a check so I got a safe deposit box at the casino. On New Year's eve after the party I went down into the casino and hit another royal for $4200. It was a good thing I hit those because I lost on every other machine I played.

I am still thinking about what kind of rotation to do.

Joan

hey all, well, i did shock cardio circuit blast today. and , it was not as hard as i thought it was gonna be. nice change to not die from one of cathe's workouts.

i love tracies' new workouts, i am kinda doing the rotation she made for all of hers, but, will add in shock cardio as i can.

man, i can't believe it, it is gonna be bad cold here the next few days. of course, cold is realative, :) since some friends just drove in from winnipeg, where it was -31. AAGGHH! can't even imagine. but, for here 19' is very cold. and that is what is what it is gonna be here a couple nites. YUCK!! tomorrow cold and windy. then, cold for several days.

no fair that we have the summeres we have down here and then have to have cold winters. we wait for winter down here when usually it is like 40's-70's. this 10 and 20 stuff is for the birds.

Thursday

Good morning,

I slept well last night but did not feel like getting up to work out..:(
It is freezing rain here today, very slippery and dangerous driving. Joy.

Garance, I am feeling a lot better, but not enough energy to work out. I wish I had your class hours for my job ;). I can understand why you would want to vary the lessons a bit to get different types of papers...it has to wear you down after a while reading the same thing over and over for years.

Josie, (( prayers)) to keep your DS safe Is the Emergen-C more like taking Vitamin C? or like a cold remedy?

Joan, $20,000?????  ...wow! I need to do something about my diet too. What type of rotation are you looking for? Using STS? or other workouts?

Cathy, LOL about your "cold" winters! Ave temp here right now is in the 20's during the day. I don't mind the cold as long as it doesn't snow. Hate driving in it, hate having to walk in it. what are Tracie's new workouts? can I see them on Collage or does she have a web site?

Hi to Valerie!

Have a good day!

Hi ladies,

Just about to go outside to shovel snow.

Deb I have put in the new rotation for sts/cardio and will try to do it for the next 2 weeks. Once I get busy I'm going to follow Garance's suggestions and us shorter wo. I do have Kelly C-M 30 min wo. I think I need to at least schedule something and substitute later.

Well, worked the plan tuesday, # 7 for the second time writing down weight used. DH was complaining mightily that I didn't have anything recorded, as he grabs weights a little heavier than what I write down. I did a bike and short treadmill before and felt good. wed we went snowshoeing, a beautiful day. about 5 hours round trip, nothing complicated, just up a road with great views. snow was very nasty and crusty but there were some other folks going up on skis. must be better skiers than we are! there were 3 parties up there, all driving Subarus. we could have driven a bit higher but coming back down the ice is where the real challenge is, and we didn't want to put on chains though we have them. sometimes it's easier to park and walk a bit further rather than spend 15 minutes wrestling with chains. We tried out our new microspikes... like yaktrax but with points... they're great for ice.

I felt much better about wall squats... josie, I'm not doing 1000 of them though! my whole problem was my feet were too close. if I stick them out further it's easier. next time I'll add 5 lbs. there's a modification for sit-n-stands on one of the cathe tv tutorials. someone gave me a link to it, and that's what I'll do next time. I'll go get the link if anyone would like to see it.

My approach for colds is preventive. I know it doesn't help to say this after you're already sick..... but extra vitamin C and zinc seems to help if I feel like I'm coming down with something, along with lots of fluids and more sleep than usual. On prevention, I've gotten methodical ( compulsive) about hand sanitizer. I keep it in my car and purse. Every time I shop, handle public surfaces, etc I follow with a good dose of sanitizer and am extremely careful not to touch my face before sanitizing. I've cut down significantly on colds since I got serious. I added vit D supplements. most of us can't get enough from diet/ sunlight and it's supposed to help immunity. I had a vit d level last year.. I was way at the bottom of normal , and I was already getting extra in my calcium supplement. Dh was very low too. so we added 1000 IU per day except in the summer when we get loads of sun. I don't work out when I hav a cold, I feel way too awful. and yeah, it sure feels liek you are starting from zero but it comes back pretty quickly.

Wow, $20,000? I'm not a gambler but what a score! good time of year to get serious about diet, everyone's talking about it and half the population is doing some kind of holiday recovery with diet and exercise. Shoveling snow is a great calorie burner and a great upper body workout.

Deb, freezing rain is just the worst. stay home and safe.

Hi Ladies,

I will be working out with Kevin tonight. My old barber died yesterday, he is my wo partner’s dad she is also a barber thanks to her dad and cuts my hair now. I knew him for 20 years since I started taking my son to him when he was 9 years old. I got a chance to say goodbye to him on the 1st of the year and after I talked to him and made him laugh, my DF said that he went into a coma and never woke up from it.

Deb, I sent you a link regarding emergen-c. It is a mega dose of vitamin C but they also have other for heart health and joint health etc.

Joan, I want to go to Vegas with you. You are a lucky lady. Congratulation!

Valerie, I'm interested on the link. Please post it. Thanks for the information on the vitamin D, I used to do all my running outside, but since I don't run anymore I know that I don't get enough sun.

Cathy, I remember those cold winters in El Paso and I'm glad that I live in Los Angeles. It has been in the 70's so far this week. It's in the low 40's in the morning and at night though.

Garance, when does school start?

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan (welcome back!), Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did the P-57 express workout (30 min.) plus a couple miles with Leslie wearing my 10 lb. vest (30 min.).

Deb, if you put together Josie's and my recs on cold prevention / treatment, you will end up with Valerie's--zinc in Coldeeze lozenges and Vit. C in Emergen-C. Yes, I suppose it sounds pretty cushy to only teach 6 hours per week, but there's lectures to prepare, assignments to create, papers and exams to grade, committee and dept. meetings, office hours and tutorials, faculty meetings that can get very boring and/or contentious, and so on and on.

Josie, I will keep your son in my prayers. The world is such a dangerous place these days. 1000 squats???!!! Sacre bleu! I have about 250 pages written, but I need to make sure everything fits together properly and write a strong intro before I send it off to a publisher.

Joan, you are one lucky dame! I am not a gambler, but I'm sure if I were I would probably be a loser. Can't imagine ever winning anything. Good luck on your new year plans for exercise and diet. Maybe you should try one of those plans where you buy the food--Jenny Craig and Nutri-system. They sound like no-brainers in terms of figuring out what to eat, and with all of the moolah you won, you can afford it.

Cathy, 19 degrees does sound cold for where you are. Mil and Fil are in Florida, and even there has been cold. Hard to believe totally in global warming this year.

Valerie, I would be interested in seeing the modification for sit-and-stands. I found them virtually impossible without a lot of unseemly grunting.

HOLY FRIJOLES!!!!! i do not remember staying power (the new tracie long), being that hard. i am fried. although, like a dummy i did jiggle free arms before SP, cuz as i said , i don't remember it being that hard. i won't make that mistake again.

i love her new workouts. great work, not killer on your old body. if you like tracie, you will proabably like them. they are kinda a combination of AWT, sports drills, core, and little of the stuff from the TLT's, ( i think, are those the ones w/ SIM, EFM, etc.)

they are hard, but not where they kill you and very easy to modify if you can't do any hi impact. there is not alot of hi impact anyway.

just some info for ya'll that may be interested in them
