Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/24

Good morning & Happy Thursday,

Nice day yesterday, a facial, then lunch out, and a manicure afterwards. A pampering day for sure.

Valerie, great news on your knee and how improved you feel the ride was. :). I agree on the off-white. We have it in most rooms, but I did want something different in the dining room, so we did a very pale peach. I like the contrast with the white ceiling and crown molding, I didn't realize theaters didn't turn the lights way up when the movie was over any longer. That seems dangerous.
I think 400 calories for dinner is pretty light. They have made some good changes to MFP...maybe you should try that again.

Lynda, I also looked at Mozart in the Jungle and it didn't catch my interest. I read somewhere that this may be the last season for The Good Wife.

Lori, don't you wonder why we have nights like that? was it maybe work stress? how is Chester doing?

Judy, that sounds like a nice dinner out, how is the vet assistant training going? Have you had a chance to call on vet offices to see what the hiring is like?

Hi Josie!

I think it's dog grooming day here, after a workout. Both dogs are looking raggedy.

Take care,

I forgot to mention that I did x train bi's and tri's along with half my therapy before dinner. ended up being about 2 hours 15 min total yesterday.

Deb I may try MFP again after I finish WW in a month. this isn't working. I keep the dinner main dish at 400 cal or less most nights. I always eat a big salad and another minimum point vegie so the total meal is more. the way WW works ... it assigns a point value based on calories, sat fat, protein, sugar. meals with grains, beans, legumes always end up being very high points even if low calorie. they don't use carbs or fiber in the calculation anymore. I made a quinoa recipe that was 365 calories. it was 12 points, or more than a third of my days allotment. believe me, it was not rich and indulgent! I made fish last night but the piece was too small. also some baked squash and a larger green salad. I woke up so hungry in the middle of the night I had to snack on a small scoop of almonds. I hate to do that but my stomach was growling at 1:30 am. before that I made a grilled chicken and orzo dish that also was, unfortunately, 12 points.

Judy, yes I get extra activity points but I am still not losing anything so I don't use them. my metabolism is extremely resistant to weight loss but at least I'm not gaining.

I am suddenly not getting thread notifications of new posts. not sure why. I didn't change anything. anyone else noticing this?

Deb we don't go to theaters often. maybe we left too soon as end screen credits were still running. it was a long movie and we all needed the rest room. cousin /wife got up first so DH and I just followed them, but we stayed upright. .

Hi everyone--

This morning I did CUB with core 1 (52:46). I HATE those bear crawls. I do about 5 because I am so much slower than Cathe and crew. I also hate the side leaning windmills and I really don't know what they are meant to do--stretch your sides??

Valerie, the lights don't really come up until they have rolled through the credits in my experience. Good for you on doing over 2 hours of exercises and the improvements on your PT! That must be heartening. I would be discouraged with WW too if I woke up in the middle of the night hungry. I must have some kind of setpoint in my weight. I did lose 5 lbs last year at Rancho La Puerto and seem to have kept them off, because on my weekly weigh-in, I stay pretty much the same, up a pound, down a pound, but basically 132. The one thing I do that might have an impact is 2 days a week I eat a light breakfast and eat nothing until dinner--sort of a mini-fast if I breakfast at 7, and then don't have dinner until 7. I have also heard that you have to eat fat to burn fat and the new thinking is that whole milk is actually better for you than skim. I don't know. What works for one person may not work for someone else.

Deb, that sounds like a lovely day of pampering.

Judy, those workouts with the MM add-ons probably have too much dread factor for me. I have soo been enjoying these under 60 min. workouts and do only one longer one on Sundays.

Lori, just curious--who felt misrepresented in Spotlight? I haven't heard that. In The Big Short the director also has intermittent quotes--e.g., from Mark Twain, "It's not what you don't know that will hurt you. It's what you believe is true and it's not." Another one is something overheard at a Washington D.C. cocktail party to the effect that like poetry, no one reads the complex financial instruments for mortgage bundling bonds. I love poetry, so this one seems a bit disparaging, comparing it to the fine print in a legal contract. Just smug cocktail chatter I guess.

Hi to Josie!

Today's workout was Chisel Agility followed by 15 minute glute chisel, 56 minutes, 399 calories. I also did Kelly Coffey's Athletic Conditioning 2 premix low impact, 17 minutes that included the w/up and stretch, 123 calories. This really was 3 rounds of the strength work. I only used the 10# Kelly was using. Total time 73 minutes and calories burned 522.

Good evening ladies!

I had another sleepless night. Not sure what is going on. At lunch since everyone is feeling crappy and not working out - I did Low Impact Sweat 1 followed up with the SB sculpt that I did a couple of days ago. I only had 1lb ankle weights at work so I used these and felt completely worked after the sweat workout.

Deb...sounds like you had a lovely day! Chester is doing great and is back to his naughty self taking our shoes and what not. I think he is very proud of himself.

Judy..great workout as always. The steak house sounds great. I love going out to eat every now and then with my DH. We do not do it enough. I read the reviews on H&C and boy they are all over. I'll let you know my thoughts.

Valerie...your doing great woth your workouts. Glad you felt stronger when riding. You are certainly making progress. Good luck woth WW. I read somewhere Oprah has lost 25 lbs.

Lynda...I feel for you with the bear crawls. When doing the windmills I do not raise my left arm at all. I just hold it to my chest. With Spotlight I do not remember who it exactly was and since I have not seen the movie I am really trying to remember. Was there a head of a school in it? I think it may have been him. I could be wrong though. He said after he saw the movie he was sick to his stomach and could not believe what he saw.

WD...awesome workouts! Is the Chiseled Agility from H&C? For some reason this sounds familiar. If yes how do you like these workouts? 522 calories burned! Love this!

Hi to Josie!

labnick, yes it is from Hammer and Chisel. I am on my 6th week now. I started on a Thursday so I could have Sundays off.

Good morning & Happy Friday!

Yesterday I did the ICE Blast w/Muscle Meltdown Biceps premix. Those giant sets are killer. I always have to lower the weights after the first set or 2.

Valerie, I can understand why you are frustrated with WW. I really like MFP. Adding recipes is easy, and I like the "save meal" option. It makes it easy if you are the type that eats the same meal frequently. Also, the exercise calories are added to your daily calorie goal but you don't have to "eat them back" as it's called.

Lynda, I hate those bear crawls too....I go slow and do however many I can, modifying, and don't match Cathe/crew at all. Good job on the weight maintaining. It sounds like you are doing a "mini-intermittent fasting" a couple days a week. I have to say, that when I do the IF regularly, the weight comes off and the sugar cravings go away. I just have to learn not to sabotage myself with junk.

Diane Sue, nice workouts!

Lori, what is keeping you from sleeping? is it stress or caffeine? Glad to hear that Chester is back to his old self. :).

Hi to Josie, & Judy

Anyone have any exciting plans for the weekend?

A workout, and making dog food today...it's cold and not pleasant outside so a good day to stay in and get some HouseMax done....

Take care,

Bringing in a little spring!

Lovely amaryllis Deb. I pulled my pot out of hibernation 10 days ago. have several shoots but will be at least a month before it blooms. I saved the bulbs and put them all into one huge pot so I get 7 -8 bulbs that bloom in sequence. I usually stake the flowers or they fall over and break off.
I bought a WW calculator for $10 that calculates smart points from nutritional figures. a lot of recipes don't have data for the current plan. sugars were not listed separately. WW doesn't care about fiber or carbs anymore. they only want sat fat, and a lot of things have total fat only. WW will save it as long as you're an active member, unless the plan changes like it did in November. then all that data was erased. I didn't recover from that. it's now harder to enter ingredients and adjust to serving size if you make an entre that's 4 or 6 servings but you're eating 1.

they don't list ingredients as they are sold and how most recipes are written. beans are listed as 1/4 cup. you guess how much is a full can and change the amount to enter into a recipe. (is it a cup?) the entire ingredient list is set up as if you're cooking for one portion of a meal, not like you'd follow the recipe and divide into servings after. It is very cumbersome. it wasn't like this before. Deb, I eat her same meal for breakfast mostly, but other meals are varied.
Lori, you're right Oprah has lost 25 lbs since she signed up in august.
Lynda, for me a calorie is a calorie. I don't like whole milk. I've read a million times that eating "more " will make your body not "hang onto the fat" so closely, that the key to losing weight is to eat more. Ha! I wish..... If I'm not hungry a good part of the time, I'm gaining..... it's that simple. as I get older, the total calories I can have are dropping. I weigh 146. I'd be happy 10 lbs less, and 132 would be wonderful. I allow myself one tablespoon of ice cream or 1 small piece of dark chocolate in the evening and that keeps sugar cravings away for me.

I will give mini fast a try and incorporate into WW. need to jump start this process somehow.

I must be doing bear crawls wrong.... I don't mind them. I agree, don't see what windmills are supposed to do.

Only therapy yesterday. we painted the master, DH did most of it. I had to go to HD to get more paint in the middle of things. we have a bathroom to do but it isn't being carpeted. no urgency. we're storing a lot of things temporarily. we decided on the carpeting and will order it this morning. looking at install on 15-16th.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did ICE Bootcamp (44:35). I don't go above 6 inches on the step and I definitely use Amanda's modifications. I also substitute mountain climbers for those one-armed burpees.

Deb, we have been invited over for dinner Saturday night by one of DH's customers who loves his meats. I am getting ready to be intimidated because she also told DH that she invited Darrah Goldstein, the author of several cookbooks and the original creator of Gastronomica, a journal about food. I wrote a piece for the journal on Sylvia Plath because Plath was a real foodie and her journals are filled with descriptions of food she made and ate. It was a fun piece to write. I will let you know what the menu is. Ooh--love the flowers! It's lightly snowing here today, but they are saying it will be up in the 50s some time next week. I watched the first two episodes of Mad Dogs--phew, what a bunch of incompetent men. I may continue watching to see if they ever get out of the mess they are in.

Lori, anything particular that keeps you awake at night? Sent you a pm about the headmaster in Spotlight. I would be upset, too, if I felt slandered by the screenwriters. What does Nilla think of Chester's shoe fetish?

Valerie, when we had a Jersey cow I absolutely loved her milk. It was so rich I could drink it for dessert. No, I don't believe in the eat more, lose more idea, but I do believe in small portions and mini-fasts. MIGHT be worth a try.

Hi Diane Sue!

How is that extra MM working for you, Judy?

Hi to Josie!

Hi Ladies,

On Monday I did spin, Tuesday it was Karina, Wednesday was spin again and yesterday I did bodypump and Karina's workout was yoga.
She said that she will do this at least once per month. It felt great to stretch.
On Monday I had to go in to see the eye specialist to approve my surgery and he found a small tear on my right retina. He immediately sent me to the laser clinic to seal it. I have to go back in 3 months and we will see if he can approve the surgery at that time. I did not feel any discomfort at all after the laser was used.

Tomorrow I plan on riding with the ALC group and we are doing 35 miles.

Deb, hope you knee is better. The flowers are beautiful !

Lori, I have not been able to sleep either and It's not because I'm not tired. Who knows!

Valerie, I'm always careful to hold on to the rail when I go to the theatre. My DH always holds my arm. Hope your cousin is doing better. What works for me when it comes to watching what I eat is writing it down. I don't care for any of the programs out there.

Hi to Judy and welcome Diane Sue!

Josie

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did the kickboxing portion of Cathe Live Fusion and tagged on Cardio Kicks punching drills. Great little workout. I have unbelieveble DOMS from the SB workout with the ankle weights. Really feel it in my "cheeks". :). This is how I felt when I first did it earlier in the week. Not sure what possessed me to do it again so soon! Everyone at work seems to be feeling better, so the plan is to start the SB challenge that we plannd to start a few weeks ago on Monday.

Deb...the flowers are beautiful! I have no idea what is keeping me up. My boss is away on vacation so I should be sleeping like a baby. Who knows! How is your knee? Better I hope.

Josie...some great workouts. You are very consistent. What caused that tear in your eye? Did you even know something was going on? You must be anxious to get this surgery behind you. Hoping it happens soon after you get the ok.

Lynda...we are all so different! I would do one arm burpees any day over mountain climbers. I absoultely loathe mountain climbers and will modify and do a completely different move whenever they are in a workout. My best weight is 135 to 138 and I am very solid. I am 142 at the moment. Damm that holiday fun! I am only 5'2" but bone structure is not petite in anyway. I wear a 9 shoe and a 7 1/2 ring finger. Everyone always seems so shocked when they find this out. For my height that sounds odd I know. I have my mom's height and my Dad's feet and hands! I look way to thin if I go below that. Good for you maintaining the weight loss. Enjoy your dinner Saturday night. What great company. Can't wait to hear about it.

Valerie...where did you buy the WW calculater? Can anyone buy it or only when you join. Just curious. Like you I do not like whole milk. I was brought up on lowfat then switched to skim in my 30's. Even my son drinks skim as this is what he was brought up on. Don't you love the look of a remove after it is freshly painted?

Hi to Judy and Diane Sue!

Today's workout was Hammer Conditioning and 10 minute ab hammer, 42 minutes, 232 calories. I just realized looking at the rotation that I have only done this once and that was near the start of the rotation. It is in the second half several times. It is weights but seems to have a bit of a metabolic feel to it. It sort of reminds me of Beast Lucky 7 which is an all weight circuit. I finished off with Les Mills Pump Step, 30 minutes, 249 calories and Flow 20 minutes, 61 calories. Total time spent, 92 minutes and calories burned 542. A birthday party for my grandson tomorrow and family day Sunday. It will be a busy weekend.
As far as diet I have been pretty much eating Paleo over the last year and a half. Right now I am interested in the Wild diet. I had the book before they started the Best Diet show that Shaun T hosts. That cookbook is nice because it has pre prep days and then it is pretty simple to finish up the meals. He is a little different than most Paleo because he does allow a little dairy if tolerated. I did a Whole 30 which went well. The only problem I had is at one point I started eating too much fruit like bananas and honey along with nuts. It made me start to gaining a bit. The idea is that your body learns to use the fat for energy instead of the sugar and starchy carbs. Generally it is a pretty healthy way of eating. Anyway, I am still in size jeans. I make my own dressing and mayonnaise to avoid unhealthy ingredients.
I got the Fixate Cookbook and was a bit disappointed in it. I have made some good recipes out of it though. I like the turkey taco meat which I add to salad or a paleo tortilla that is sort of like a crepe. The dressings are nice. I have tried those containers and they just don't work for me. I went back to MFP. I have used it for years.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Cathe "To The Mat Legs & Icy Core Live". That was 58 minutes. Then I did Body Beast Build Legs, and Body Beast Abs. The Cathe Live workout was tough! I think it was harder than the ICE dvd workout. This morning I did a short Spinerval and tonight I went to the gym with DH and did a short upper body workout.
No special plans this weekend. I will be finishing up the ICE level 1 rotation. I have to do RS Kickbox, Low Impact Sweat 1 and Icy Core 2.

Deb-the training is going well. I just signed up for the 3rd, and last class. It starts Feb. 10th. I haven't called any veterinary offices yet but I should do that soon. The good thing is that there are so many vets around here. Hopefully I will be able to find something.

Valerie-I can't remember the last time I was in a theater. At least 10 years ago, maybe longer.
WW doesn't sound like much fun. I think you would like MFP. I've been using it for a couple of years.

Lynda-I don't like bear crawls or windmills either. I love whole milk and full fat yogurt. I feel better when I have a little more fat in my diet. I don't want to over do it though so I usually stick to 1 or 2%. I do use cream in my coffee every day. I use "mini moos", little half & half containers that are only 10 calories each.

Lori-Awesome kickboxing workouts! I'll have to check out that SB workout with the ankle weights.
It was really nice going out to eat with DH. We are going to try to get out more often. It's been a pretty rare occurrence the past few years.

Josie-Awesome workouts! I'm sorry about your eye, but glad you got it taken care of.

Diane Sue-You are doing some awesome workouts too! Great job!

Have a great weekend!

Judy

Good morning,

Yesterday I did the ICE premix with a Blast and MM Back. I still have doms from the MM Bicep workout the day before. I really like the MM's. We are supposed to have weather in the 40"s today and up to 50 tomorrow...Yahoo! This has been a great winter so far.

Valerie, good idea putting your bulbs in hibernation. You take them out in December then? Agree on the staking. These just "popped" the other day. Not sure why WW would not measure carbs....it's the big rage now...MFP's recipe section lets you enter the number of servings that a recipe serves, then when you add it to your diary, you just enter how many servings you ate and it figures out the nutrients etc for you for that entry. Try the mini-fasting....it helps. Then if you like it, you might want to try the 16 hour fast with an 8 hour eating window.

Lynda, that dinner sounds like fun, and I am sure you do not have to be intimidated by that author! I started the Mad Dogs series...watched a part of the first episode. I think there are creepy things to come.

Josie, wow, that news about the tear in your retina must have been scary. Too bad it delayed your procedure but good that you were going to have it or it would not have been discovered. My knee has been "wonky"....that is the only way to describe it. It clicks, and snaps when walk....very strange. I took the carpet out and am now just using puzzle mats over the concrete floor.

Lori, I can't imagine doing SB with ankle weights! Great job and no wonder you have doms....I'm surprised you a walk. :). I do any of those mountain climbers, burpees etc using my Firm step up stool instead of the floor. That is the only way I can do them...no way to do the 1-arm ones, I just do 2 arms. I love skim milk, but have limited the amount of milk I drink because of the sugar content. I use almond milk in my oatmeal.

Diane Sue, how is the Wild diet compare to Paleo? more strict? Are you referring to the containers in the 21 Day Fix?

Judy, nice workouts! I agree, you should be able to find something at a vet, even if it is part time to start. Funny about you and Lori saying you need to get out to eat more often. John and I need to stay home and eat our own food more! We go out too much.

Agility class today, then HouseMax for me....maybe a trip to the Outlets later on. I have a gift card to use.

Take care,

good morning. Deb, I've had a pot of amaryllis for years. they spend summer on the deck after flowers are done. I let them dry out, cut back foliage in late fall. winter them in a dark closet. when they start sprouting in late dec or early jan, I pull them out of the closet. the flower shoots "green up" in a couple days. flower stalks are growing rapidly now. they don't all bloom at once. very pretty but the red ones will stain whatever they touch.
I re typed my password list yesterday and there it was the pw for MFB. I will look at that again before WW is done.

I did TTM and therapy exercises yesterday. warmed up with 20 minutes on the elliptical. compared to Judy, I did nothing! wow. you really get a huge amount of workout time in.

we go to about 1-2 movies a year since we've been doing things with our cousin. I'd go more often if the volume wasn't so blasted high. going on a weekday afternoon isn't crowded which was my main issue with theaters but they should adjust volume downward when theater is almost empty.

I got a bit more focused and worked on WW for a bit. got a few things entered so I can click on them rather than having to enter recipes when I'm busy cooking. I will say the program is working much better than November. After they launched "smart points" program in November, they switched focus to cut saturated fat and sugar. I don't have much of an issue with either, but I eat more grains, beans, legumes than most people. I'm not a true vegetarian anymore. I eat some fish & chicken. a skim milk latte in the morning is my favorite drink.. like skim much better than 2%. I like 60 cal almond milk with my oatmeal. I cook with olive oil, make my own vinaigrette so I get enough fat but I don't do well at all limiting carbs.
anyway, when WW switched to the smart points program, they changed the way they calculate points and dropped carbs and fiber from the calculation. added in sugar and sat fat instead. a lot of recipes don't show grams of sugar, or just list total fat grams. Things like yogurt with fruit jumped seriously in points. I thought I could have a fruit smoothie as long as I used only "free" fruit and almond milk, but they judge smoothies differently. they are a LOT of points even without sweetener...another surprise. I have another month but at least the program is working now so I'll decide in mid feb if I continue or switch to a free program.
Josie, I agree.... recording what you ate and exercised helps. I'm not as consistent as I should be. bad surprise on the eye issue. hope this doesn't delay the other surgery too much.
Lori I think we are similar body types. I should be closer to 135 than I am at the moment. I was 135 for a long time. I gained 20 lbs gradually over a couple years around menopause and getting laid off my job. I took off 10 but the other 10 doesn't want to leave the area. I'm not giving up.
I bought the WW calculator off the
WW site under "shop". It calculates smart points quickly without a computer, so if I'm checking out a recipe in a magazine or in the kitchen, I don't need to truck off to do it somewhere else. it adds points for the day too, but I'm using it as an easy non computer way ton decide if a recipe is worth trying. you could do it on an ipad or desktop or maybe even a phone but I don't like to do it that way if I can do it simpler.

ETA did 20 elliptical, floor part of LBB, lots of therapy exercises, and core 1. I'm walking down stairs more normally than a few weeks ago. I'm feeling pretty optimistic today. I don't want to do any jumping or impact. If it gets sore, I might start using my knee ROM improperly and I don't want to do that now I'm making progress. I'm doing squats, lunges with 10 lb weight now. I wish I understood how this all happened but it is improving...... will worry about that later.

Today was Chisel Cardio and I added on STS med ball no partner abs. Workout was 48 minutes, calories burned 323. I stuck with the 10# dumbbell Autumn used and used a 25# kettlebell instead of the 25# dumbbell for the swings. My hamstrings were sore when I got up this morning.

Deb, there are those that are really strict Paleo and those that are not. The Wild Diet is not as strict as Paleo. He does have a portion size chart. You would be eating mostly vegetables and proteins. But, the food lists do include dairy but prioritizing the dairy as fermented, no sugars, unpasteurized, grassfed, etc.. Cheese on recipes is optional. There are some desserts in the menu plan but making a dessert does not work for me. Even though they fit the Paleo protocol I want to eat to much when they are around. For instance he had 1 choco nut cookie for dessert. I am glad I made half a recipe. I ate 3 which gave me over 900 calories. Ouch. But, if I stuck to the plan I would have enjoyed just one :) It is basically all as naturally unprocessed food as possible. Yes, the container system for 21 Day fix came with Hammer and Chisel. They use those for the nutrition plan. It is just a real pain to try to figure recipes in that are not already figured. for me. I use lots of recipes for my cooking.

Irongirl, I bet your legs are fatigued well :) Nice workout.
