Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/2/17

Lori thanks for clarifying. I haven't looked at "ask cathe " for a while and would think this would have posted to " new and upcoming".

Deb thanks... I will look at the premixes, once the shock wears off. when I start playing a disk, remote is hard to fool with. glad I don't have a disk or player problem. There is no place to set the remote on the elliptical. Once started, I need to stop the workout to adjust anything other than volume. I assumed that modifications would be in the main workout.
I still think Slam is a pretty challenging workout and might not be worth if I need to modify half the moves.

Today I wanted to check out Cardio Slam with the modifiers. I mainly wanted to see if it has pauses when it switched screens with the modifers and it does have a jump. Anyway, I did the workout with extra modification, no overhead arm stuff or to the floor stuff. I just repeated other segments that were doable or did something like the speed skater move. Spiderman I did side to side knee raises. I also wrked through most of the breaks. I was surprised how many calories I burned considering I modified so much. I bet the whole workout without modifications is an excellent calorie burner. This was 50 minutes, 332 calories, heart rate 126 avg/152 max. I then did Barre Amped Power Stretch, again doing modifications for bending over moves and overhead arm stretches. 24 minutes, 53 calories. Total time was 74 minutes and calories burned 385.

Deb, I read about the pumpkin on a paleo blog and went to check it out on the internet. Maybe they consider Pumpkin a type of squash, so they let it go. I didn't mind the mat part of the Cardio Slam workout but I think it would be easier just to pretend that there is a mot there. Maybe it was because I wasn't jumping. On the modifier where she is twisting across the mat and back I just did it lightly without a bunch of hopping. Does Cathe appear on the upper corner when you do the modifications premix? She is in the lower right corner on mine. I feel it is so brief though. There was one modifier that felt a bit uncomfortable and then the modifier was gone so I had to work it on my own.

Valerie, I think that you will find the modifications much better. There are some spots that I didn't get into the hopping on because I did not want to do any type of jumping and of coarse the burpee moves are out for me as well as the plank jacks and spidermans even though those are low impact. I have two mats, one is smaller than the other and it is a Nike. The other is one that I got with Thai Cheng from Beach Body and it is wider and longer. It has more texture to it and I do not like it very much. It gets slippery at times. I put my high step next to my spin bike so that I can lay the remotes on it and a towel. That gives it enough height that I can reach it.

Today I did PHA Training. That one definitely keeps the heart rate up. I had more pauses than Cathe as I adjusted my weights or just needed to catch my breath. I like it and look forward to doing it again now that I know what to expect.

Valerie, the modifications for Cardio Slam make it a good workout for those who don't want to do high impact. If I do a premix it will probably include the mat and step portions. I actually enjoyed those.

I will try to take a look at the modification parts today if I can.... I need to erase those images of 2 million jacks and flying angels! the spidermans didn't look very easy either, . the crew is so springy and bouncy... I saw plenty of things that were doable. I have the elliptical set up in a corner next to the treadmill. it doesn't have any flat space to set a remote, so once I start, I have to get off to adjust anything. I was thinking about the stepping across the mat move in LIS, and wondering why I had difficulty with it. it never crossed my mind that their mats might be a few inches narrower. no wonder it seemed harder. DUH!! still, putting it off until after our trip.

I've read that about pumpkins and squash before. I always use my winter ( hubbard and butternut) squash as a sub for pumpkin. the plants are all the same family .. cucurbit. they cross pollinate freely too so if you grow winter squash, zucchini, or pumpkins, any volunteer plants that come up next year will not grow to be what you expect. you can get some very weird fruits.

Good evening ladies,

This morning I did the premix of Cardio Slam with no mat. Sometimes I used modifications and sometimes not, depended on the move. Then went on to 2 of the 3 SB bounce barre workouts. Total time was 70 minutes and 545 calories. Really enjoyed this mix.

Diane Sue...I guess quite a few people received the preacher dvd. When I traveled to florida in November I did Country Heat and Barre and a Cathe Band workout I made up a while ago using my downloads. I agree that the modification window could be a little longer. Great that she did this though.

Valerie...yes...check out the modification premix of cardio slam. Kickboxing is a great travel workout! I frequently bring some with me when I travel.

Judy...I love SB and can't go to long with out one of her workouts. :). How did you like that Lower Body Band one? I have not done this one but it looks like it would get you deep in the upper glutes/hip. Will need to try this one out. I am also thinking about her detox rotation.

Deb...I do not mind at all making my own premixes. I really enjoy doing them. It is really very easy to do. I did not buy the dvds and this is the first time doing so. I love all the premixes and wondered how I would feel not having them. Then I realized I love having all the premixes but hardly ever did any of them. Just did a select few. And then even with the premixes there is always a dread factor for a move I did not like. Well problem solved with downloads and so thrilled Cathe offers thems. Well I just remove the move! One example was the bear crawls in I think one of her Ice workouts. There were 8 and that was too much for my shoulder so I condensed to 4 and all is good!

Carolyn...I am with Deb...too much dread factor in the mat portion of Cardio Slam. I love everything else. I may make a premix utilizing some of the mat workouts though. I can't wait to do the PHA training. Not sure when it is up in the rotation.

Have a great night all!

Good morning,

Yesterday I did a Walk Fit workout on the treadmill. John wanted to get his reservation fishing license renewed, then we planned to go out for lunch. The reservation is along the lake. There were lake effect storms going on, and I was a little hesitant to make the trip, but he thought it would be ok. We were 3 miles from the reservation, in white-outs, could not see a thing, when we turned around and came back home. It was a "nail-biter" for sure. We did end up at a really nice place for lunch though, once we drove out of the lake effect stuff. :)

Lori, thanks for the info...I guess this kind of mix up can happen with a large DVD producer/distributor. I guess over 20+ people received the preacher DVD. I think that is great that you can eliminate, or reduce the reps of a move with that software you have!

Valerie, I think you will be pleased with the modification premix for Cardio Slam. I did have to do more than Cathe did, but it was easily done. When in doubt, I just insert Ice Skaters, or swimming move it on the step. I really wish I would have gotten a mat more like the one Cathe & crew uses. Mine is really think..almost pad-like. Theirs seem to lie flat on the floor and really narrow.

Diane Sue, agree Cardio Slam is a great calorie burner, even with modifications. I always thought pumpkin was just another form of a squash, but when it is supposed to be Pumpkin, according to the can label, it should be Pumpkin!

Carolyn, funny how we are all different when it comes to the parts of Cardio Slam that we like!

A workout ( I think Giant Sets in the one for the rotation today), then meeting my niece and cousin for lunch..:).

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did PHA Training and added the floor and ab section from Pure Strength Legs at the end. I loved PHA Training! It goes so fast, with almost no breaks and my heart rate stayed up so it was a great calorie burner too. Today I will be doing a cardio workout, not sure if I want to do Cycle Sweat or something else. I might try one of the Jessica Smith workouts that I haven't done yet. I have a chiropractor appointment and a hair appointment in the afternoon. It's very cold here this week and the wind chills are below zero. No significant snow yet but we might get something this weekend.

Deb-driving in white-out conditions is really scary. I'm glad you made it back ok. I haven't looked in the forum to see if anyone mentioned the missing cardio segment in the boot camp premix. It's not a big issue, I'll just do the regular workout and add the bonus abs after if I'm doing the ab workout that day.

Diane Sue-I agree, Cardio Slam without modifications would be a great calorie burner. On my DVD, the modification box is in the upper right corner. It doesn't stay up very long.

Valerie-I agree about all the jumping and the flying angel jacks in Cardio Slam. I can do jumping jacks but I haven't been able to do all the variations that they do. I think I have the same mat that they use, a blue mat that has "Cathe" on the end. It was still hard for me to jump across and I had to modify that section a lot.

Lori-That's a great calorie burn! Those SB bounce barre workouts look like fun! I really liked the SB lower body band workout. I added it to my favorites. It's kind of like physical therapy for me as I have issues with my hips and glutes.

Judy

We got snow last night. Everything is covered this morning. Gertie did here leap when she went outside like she thought she was going to jump over it , but that was impossible. It is cold and she was back fast. Oddly they are forcasting up to 60 one day next week. I guess that is not really odd for OK. I am probably going to so some lower body today and maybe some cardio. I guess I will see when I get upstairs. I was amazed when I got up this morning and my fitbit said goal met on sleep. I got 8.5 hours!! I love it when that happens since it is so rare.

Deb, I never like to take chances with weather. No visibility is frightening when on the road. I am glad that you made it jome safely. At least lunch was a bonus. I read another article that claimed Libbys pumpkin is another variety of pumpkin that is small and looks like squash, Another I had read said Libbys crossed varieties of squash. It all tastes okay but sill is deceiving. Now I know when I cook pumpkin and make my pies and desserts that it tastes somewhat different. It tastes good. My families favorite though iwas when I used acorn squash from our garden instead of pumpkin.

Judy, I thought PHA looked like it would be a calorie burner. That is interesting that the modification box's in a different spot. It doesn't make much difference where it is because it is gone quickly. SB lower body band sounds like it would be a good one.

Today I did a Jessica Smith 30 Minute Fat Blaster walk. I started a Barre Amped stretch but I was interrupted before I got to do much. The modifications box on my DVD is in the lower right corner. That's odd that it appears in different locations.

Deb, I'm glad that you were able to salvage part of your outing. We have snow and rain in the forecast starting this afternoon. People here don't handle it well and I intend to stay in and keep warm.

I love both pumpkin and butternut squash, but I would like to know which one I am eating. Today feels like a day for soup or chili.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucurbita_pepo this is really interesting!.
summer squash, winter squash, pumpkins, gourds are all in the same family and are one of the oldest cultivated plant groups in the world. maybe 10,000 years old. there is plenty of disagreement on origins and plant groupings historically and currently. Huge variation in size, shape, color and also in what people call each one. I use butternut and hubbard because they grow best here. it is really just a name game as to whether it's a squash or a pumpkin.

Deb, that is so scary. white out conditions can come up so quickly. wish us luck on our drive tomorrow. weather is deteriorating later in the day so we are leaving early to get some mileage covered before it goes downhill. we would like to get to Bozeman tomorrow but it depends on driving conditions. we will stay somewhere else if driving is poor.

I did a premix from S&S bootcamp yesterday that was Ok. no modifications but the part I did didn't need any. I played the cardio slam premix and saw the modifications. curiously they showed up on the bottom right of my screen and don't appear until several reps of the regular workout have shown. and like you say judy, they don't stay long. Yes, you are all right, that will make this workout much more doable. so I did the 25 min premix and then 20 on the elliptical.
one reason I got the step is to transition back to toe pushups. I did about 16 yesterday using the step with no risers. I can do quite a few knee pushups but doing more of those doesn't change things much. Lori, as many times as I try bear crawls I can't figure what exactly they are supposed to 'work". I was squatting down too low, and recently noticed cathe is much more upright doing them than I was. they don't target anything specific for me....so maybe I'm not doing them correctly.

My issues with the mat are it's so easy to catch a toe, flip up the mat. I thought about putting colored tape on the floor and using that as lines to jump. I'd hate to cut the mat width down by several inches, and it still is thicker so that might not fix the problem.

Today I checked over Strong and Sweaty Boot camp no upper premix. I modified a lot and since I was not doing the weights and modifying cardio to keep it all low impact, I did not take all of the rests. I also checked out the first premix that is all 6 rounds with the abs. It skips the first cardio which is plunge lunges (I think that is what it is called) I did not do that one, just checked it out. It still has the weight segments from the first round. I added a bit more step and off the step reverse lunge to knee ups so the workout was 45 minutes for me, 237 calories. I then did Great Glutes disc, bonus chair, and stretch, 24 minutes, 45 calories. I finished with Barre Amped Lower Body Stretch, changing up whatever kept me from staying more upright. For the most part this was doable as is, 20 minutes, 27 calories. Total time, 89 minutes, 309 calories.

I think maybe they need to identify the squash types better. I like pumpkin or whatever is in most of those cans. Sometimes I have purchased some brands that were a bit more pale and not as tasty as others. Some tend to have a bit more water in them. It makes a difference in the outcome of the baked items.
I would not put all of the squash varieties like the summer squashes like zucchini and yellow squash or patty pan squash in the same group as far as cooking. I got patty pan from my daughter and it seems like a waste of time. I stuffed it after baking. There is not much there but lots of seeds and skin and very little flesh to eat.

Valerie, my Nike mat is the right size, rather thin. I still manage to catch it with my toe. Cathe steps on them and everything and they do not seem to move. When I was able to use my puzzle mats without them sliding across the room, I used the lines on them and no mat. They just do not stay put even when placed wall to wall. I think my carpet has some odd texture that they cannot grip. I put weights on the edges and they pop up and apart in the middles. I got tired of the frustration. Thinking of tape for marking, I would think that would work on bare floors. I have a roll that came with my Tai Cheng workouts. I kind of wish the modifier pops up sooner and that on Boot Camp they showed it sooner. Once I learn what they are though I will just start doing them right away. I just did something low impact till she got to the modifier. I have had moves that I wondered what exactly I was supposed to be feeling. Honestly, I am not sure with bear crawls. It seems to work arms and legs at the same time.

I went and googled bear crawls. Many do not look quite like what Cathe does. But, they work a bit of everything. Mainly core, shoulders, and quads. Some seem to work lower on them than others. I saw some actually sliding weight plates while going forward with their feet. That would be tough. My grandson used to do them through his whole house for wrestling.

definitely cooking procedures vary a lot. we get variation year to year even on the same butternut and hubbard, some years sweeter and dryer than others. some years years bland and not sweet at all. gotta believe that happens with commercial growing too.

my yoga mats flip up easily. I bought 1/4 inch thick ones for better cushion. we have a wood ( laminate) floor in our gym, so a low adhesive tape like the kind we use to cover things for paining would work. off to do some sort of workout.

Good evening ladies!

This morning I wanted something lighter so I did JS 30 min Hiit Walk. I used 2lb ankle weights and 1lb hand weights. I'll have to say it was a really nice little workout. I plan to do the S&S ab workout tonight.

Deb...that storms sounds horrible. My how quickly the weather can change. Lunch sounded nice though. :). I love making videos. Whether they are workout ones or for friends and family. Makes no difference.

Judy..great workouts today! The plan was for PHA for tomorrow but my son showed up tonight and will be staying for the weekend so I had him bring up my Jumpsport. I will also grab my 8lbs weights and do live Giant Sets with light weights tomorrow, at least I will feel like I am somewhat keeping with the rotation! SB's Bounce workout is up on Amazon so of course I ordered!!! Very excited.

Diane Sue..we had snow too. Not a lot but more to come tomorrow, GiGi was Spayed pn Wednesday. Doesn't seem to have phased her at all. She is so excitable so we are trying to calm her down when she is in the snow. Very hard to do. Awesome on the sleep!!!!

Carolyn...I laughed when I saw your post about JS Fast Blaster. I had plan to do this one this morning but switched at the last second. I really like the workouts on that dvd. Love you can choose the intensity too.

Valerie... I actually do not put a mat down and feel I get a great workout. I "visualize" one and that works for me. I never liked bear crawls. I can handle a few but any more it is just uncomfortable for me. Thinking they work the shoulders and core.

Diane Sue...I now need to google bear crawls! You have me intrigued. Your grandson bear crawling around the house sounds great!!! Lol!! Good workouts today. You are doing very well easing into things. The SB bounce dvd looks really awesome. I know I am going to love it. Doing barre on the jumpsport adds a level.

Valerie, you are so right on the crops. We have done the same thing in the past. I found when going to Sprouts that sometimes the stickers would change labelling growers etc.. I learned which one to choose when I bought watermelon. One did not have much flavor and was usually kind of mushy. The other was always good up till they had no more to stock. They say they stock local produce unless it is not possible.

Lori, I am guessing the new bounce workout uses the bar? Some of the moves were fine for me but the ones she had you using leverage made if feel I was bending the bar toward myself with my weight, if that makes sense. You will have to let me know how it is. My dog Mudd was so active when I had her spayed. The vet said she woke up and was bouncing all over the place. She had some of her stitches out in no time. I was seriously worried about her. I had to keep Gertie from wanting to play with the other dog so separated them for a few days.

did Flextrain today. a great non dread factor workout. matched cathe's weight most of the time. few moves with8's rather than10s. have 3 kickbox workouts to take along. hopefully will have time to do them.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did S&S Total Body Giant Sets...whew! that was a good one, a great weight routine. Then met my niece and cousin for lunch, and went for a manicure. A nice "girls day out".

Judy, I feel the same about the PHA training workout...a really good weight workout with the addition of calorie burn. I think there was a thread about a missing cardio or some section of a DVD...it got kind of nasty as the person started to criticize how the Forum Admin responds to people. Oh...Diane Sue said it...its the Plunge Lunges that are missing from one of the Boot Camp premixes....caused a bit of a "flurry" of responses and criticism of the Forum Admin's tone in his/her responses.

Diane Sue, that is sure a strange weather swing! Up to 60 would be great though, even for a day.

Carolyn that is strange that the modification box is in different places...I wonder why that is? Maybe the set up of a DVD player or something...

Valerie, good info on pumpkins and squash. The weather that we had was called "lake effect" snow. You can be in a blizzard and 2 miles down the road it can be sunny and dry. When we were coming back home, the lake effect was behind us and we were hurrying to keep ahead of it. Some areas were so bad that the kids could not get out of the schools, buses couldn't make it out, and parents couldn't make it to the school so they kept them there overnight. I guess the kids had fun, watching movies etc. :). I don't understand what those bear crawls are supposed to work either. I think I bought the thicker mat for cushioning and it doesn't lay flat at all...I just don;t use it for any of that mat type cardio, and "pretend" there is a mat there.

Lori, the Bonus Abs of S&S is the only one I haven't done yet. I heard it was pretty tough and that set up a "dread factor" for me. I have been avoiding it. What did you think of it? Great that Gigi came through the surgery with no issues. They say that the female spaying is tougher than the neutering of a male.

Agility class this morning, Any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Deb, it sounds like a very pleasant ladies day out, It is nice to hear that Total Body Giant sets is a good one.. I don't know why people get so worked up over a premix. After all that is what it is and Cathe distinctly calls that first cardio section an extended warm up. If they want to do it they can pause and do some plunge lunges or go back and add them at the end. I guess I am not that picky and can easily go along and not even notice things like that until I hear someone else say it. There is so much good features with Cathe's dvd's that are not on a lot of instructors workouts and the prices are not bad.

I just watched the SB clip for Barre Amped Bounce. It looks good. I put it in my cart. When I can use it I will purchase it. I like that it is different workouts and a separate stretch.

This morning I did Total Body Giant Sets. I love this one. Deb, I agree this is a great total body weight workout. I was able to match Cathe's weight on most of the exercises. I looked back at that thread where people were complaining about the Bootcamp premix and the tone of the response from forum administrator. It surprised me since I rarely see that kind of interaction on these forums.

Bonus Abs is the only workout from the series that I haven't done. I also saw several comments on how hard it is. I did preview it yesterday and I can see how it could be challenging.

Have a good afternoon and stay warm.
