Good morning,

I did STS Total Body today, the pre-mix that does one set only. It's about 47 minutes long, and was just enough. It includes the core work and the stretch as well.

It is snowing a lot here, so our warm spell is over.

Take care,

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Rockin' Models (70 min.). Legs are already sore.

Deb, how is Keegan doing with Kelsey gone? Given the age difference, I don't suppose they were big players with one another, but I think dogs do feel a loss through their human companions. No snow here, just a lot of rain last night and very warm today--45 degrees.

Josie, I cannot wait to hear when you start that new regimen on the tenth.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Nothing too intense. we did some light hiking on 2 days, a couple hours of easy trails. higher stuff is pretty much snowed in now. skied/cleared road on the other day for 4.5 hours. we went back to the same road we started working on wed and did most of the rest of it so it will be clear skiing for the rest of the season. no one seemed to be using it probably because of a very large tree across it preventing machines from continuing. whoopee. gotta be happy for blow downs sometimes, since the forest service doesn't set aside much for non motorized travel. 1( one) road. tomorrow we plan on a longer ski that will (likely) involve some road clearing but don't know til we get up it a ways.
clear, cold and sunny for several days, colder than we're used to. a change from the usual 40 and raining.
I still have hummingbirds coming to my feeder, the first time I've had some overwinter here. I've read that they did, but never had any myself. I exchanged a frozen feeder for a warm one the other day, and one of them flew around under the deck making all sorts of noise like he(she) was saying thank you. a little anthropomorphizing there...

Deb, hope you're dealing with your loss OK. Have you thought about another doggie or is it too soon to consider it?

Hi,

No workout today, I tried to sleep in a bit, not that it worked. Back to work for a full week. I could get used to 3 days a week.

Garance, Keegan is ok, he is a little confused about being alone I think, or maybe it is us just projecting our feelings on him , (anthropomorthizing as Valeries mentions below). He is liking all the attention he is getting that's for sure.

Valerie, The only time I saw a hummingbird was in Saratoga at my in-laws. They always had a feeder out. So pretty to watch. I do think about another dog, it is there, but not actively there, if you know what I mean? We definitely will get another dog. If the breeders we know had a litter now, we would probably do it, but we have not reached out yet, and maybe will wait until spring because of the training etc. We house trained both Kelsey and Clancy in the winter and it was tough. It's hard scooping up a squatting puppy and running out into 2 feet of snow with no coat, boots etc.

Take care,

Keegan is sleeping in Kelsey's bed/basket right now...is that me anthropomorphizing or does he miss her?

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did KCM's double Bootcamp circuit (55 min.).

Deb, if little K is sleeping in her bed, he must miss her presence. No, I don't think you are anthropomorphizing. Dogs are so close to their human companions they must share in the same feelings. Think of all the dogs they use for therapy because they are so comforting and helpful and seem to intuit what humans are thinking, needing, feeling.

I'm back in the classroom for Winter Study this year. My course completely transfers the burden to students: "Your Favorite Director." So far, it's Spielberg, Cronenberg, Wes Anderson, Paul T. Anderson, and Howard Hawks. Three more to go. We just watch a movie by each the first two weeks. This afternoon, it's JAWS.

Valerie, we have many hummingbirds during the summer. They love bee balm, but also just about any flower. I love watching them.

no ski today... though we tried. got there and there was no snow, nothing like the area we were at on saturday. we thought there'd be plenty but no. a big surprise, must not have gotten any when most other places did. very icy, could not drive very far on the road. so we stopped at a state park and did a walk along the river looking at ducks and eagles and came home. will do treadmill instead.

I think dogs and cats sense a lot more than we give them credit for.. sometimes they're smarter than we are.... I didn't last long after our previous cat passed on. He was a terrific cat, we adopted him when he was 11 and he lived to 17. It was very distressing to lose him. maybe a week went by, and I went looking for another little guy. each is an individual, so I never feel like I'm "replacing" the lost pet, but providing a good home for a new little guy to get to know and love. I love dogs too, but cats are easier when we're gone as much as we are, and dogs can't go to many of those places. so deb, no rush, do it when it feels right.

Good morning all,

No workout again, I have to give myself a good "talking to". It snowed a little last night, not much to make a big difference in any way.

Garance, watching movies doesn't sound like a bad class to take, or to give for that matter.

Valerie, we can send our snow your way.

Hi to Josie, Joan, and Cathy,

Take care,

worked the plan.. did 15 bike and 35 treadmill. I will keep working on going faster for parts of the run. I'm amazed at how easy it is to run faster for a minute and then back off for a minute or two and keep repeating. the walking this morning wasn't enough to count for exercise.
DH watched STS total body while on the treadmill and thought it looked good. I haven't watched it since I changed the settings. the "stretched out" people won't be a distraction.
Yoga this morning and then groceries, and somewhere the first disk of meso 3. DH likes meso 3 the best and is going to repeat it. at least we are setting weights up for the same exercises that way, so less clutter in the room.

my resolution .... boring , I know, is lose 10 lbs. and continue 3 weight workouts a week. I'm going to take advantage of the general diet/weight loss frenzy that happens in january every year and see if I can get some progress. I have not regained the weight I lost a while ago though it wasn't 5 lbs as I first thought. must have misread the scale without my contacts in. no, I didn't take them out to save weight! just weighed early before I had them in. more like 3.5 pounds. not real sure where I started cause I didn't write it down.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Zumba Live (55 min.).

Deb, you're absolutely right about Winter Study. It took me ages to figure out a type of class that was virtually no work for me, did not have any high expectations about student commitment, and would, in fact, be fun. So this afternoon is Rushmore. Have not watched this one since it came out, but I remember loving Bill Murray in it.

Valerie, nothing wrong with your resolutions. Good luck! So far I have not been procrastinating on getting things ready for spring semester and finishing up some stuff from last semester--like knitting a Christmas stocking for Max. It will be finished and tucked away for next Christmas. I really thought I would finish it in time, but then was distracted by other stuff--as usual.

Hi Ladies,

Back at work! I just finished going over my 389 e-mails. I will be going to the gym and doing a boot camp workout this evening. My DS ad GK's are still at my house until the 9th, so I will be busy, but if I don't schedule something I will end up not doing a workout.

Ok Deb! Get back on the workout horse!

It as been very cold her in LA, and there were a lot of road closures due to snow and ice.
I'm so glad that my DH and I did not go to Las Vegas. People were stranded for hours coming back to LA.

Joan, I hope that you are winning.

Hi Valerie and Cathy!

Josie

A movie class.... sounds terrific. "Jaws" has been running on one of the cable stations the last week or two and I feel like I've seen it at least 2or 3 times from the clips I keep catching. Seems so tame now. Bruce seems fake now but it scared me to death when I first saw it. I remember seeing Rushmore and not liking it. too long ago to remember why.
I just went thru the lists of the local critics favorites for 2010, and loaded many on my netflix queue. If you only watched box office hits you'd miss almost all the good ones. Can't believe another incarnation of The Fockers is making a bundle. no accounting for taste. blech.

Deb, Josie is right. get back on the horse. even if only for 15 minutes.... but try for longer.

Our weather has changed from clear and cold to the more usual warmer and rain tonight. mountains will be off limits tomorrow because of avalanche risk, which probably will be too high. If not too wet we may try a ride but rain chances are 100%.

Good morning,

Nothing much going on around here...work, eat, sleep, work, blah blah blah..

Valerie, I am still perplexed on what makes some TV's/DVD players do strange things with the new workouts, and others are fine. Mine has that small black stripe top and bottom of the TV screen, but the picture is normal, no stretched out people etc. Joan couldn't even play hers. My TV is probably 10 years old and the DVD player at least 5 or more. I never had an issue with any DVD's played on it. There HAD to be something different done when they made this series, although the tech people here say no..

Josie, when does that free fitness program start?

Garance, I should have a resolution similar to yours, get the stuff around the house done that I have been putting off for months. Like straighten out our guest room/sewing room/junk collecting room. It is so much easier to just close the door.

Gotta run, take care,

Hi Ladies,

The new program starts on January 10th. I went to the orientation yesterday and everyone left very excited and ready to start. We will be working out for 1 hour on M,T,TH and F and on Wednesdays we will have our nutrition class. We are only allowed 4 absences and if you are late, you need to attend a different class. That way you don't interrupt everyone that got there on time. I love that part.

I will be picking up my bike from the shop today. I took it in for a tune up so that I can start training for the "Tour de Palm Springs" on February 11th. I signed up for the 55 mile ride.

I have a slight cold that my GS gave me and I'm trying to get rid of it before next week.

Valerie, I don't swim in the ocean because of JAWS! It ruined it for me.

Hi to Cathy, Joan and Garance!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Squeeze (56 min.).

Valerie, I had not seen Jaws in many, many years, and I jumped again every time Spielberg wanted me to. You don't really see Bruce until toward the end, so it's just John Williams' music for him, and it continues to work well. Rushmore is a bit aimless, but there are some good laughs. Today is Raising Arizona. I'm dreading tomorrow--Night of the Living Dead. Why do students choose stuff like this??? If you want to see a really riveting but disturbing film, try The Stoning of Soraya M. Based on a true story.

Josie, for a long time after seeing Psycho I did not like taking showers.

Deb, it sounds like you are a having a bad case of the blahs. Wish I could cheer you up.

The Stoning of Soroya was excellent... unimaginable cruelty and unfairness and viciousness that is hard to comprehend, directed at women. Jaws... I guess the sequels undid some of the scare factor for me, but i still get distressed with the beginning attack scenes. I don't think i've ever seen Night of the Living dead. my parents absolutely did not allow us to see any "horror" movies and I never got interested later.

Josie, that's a good policy, will force people to show up on time! Feb 11 doesn't sound too far off. Keep us posted on what you're doing.

I had an excellent yoga class yesterday. new instructor works us hard and is very good at explaining in words and example what she wants us to strive for. then did disk 25. I increased weights a little but I don't feel safe doing bench presses without a spotter if I go heavier. and DH is not around every day. I'm a little achy today in all the right places.
weather is totally crummy so doing house projects. getting our dining room hardwood tuesday. had to clean the room out, pull carpet, molding, other prep.
also reset the toilet better. that is such a PITA job. why ( rhetorical question) are toilets always in rooms that only one person can maneuver in when it needs 2 people. got it in but what a thrash. I'd love to see how a single plumber does it, there must be a trick.

Deb I think ( no tech expert here) it was filmed in widescreen, the shape of newer TVscreens. It escapes me too why the older disks work fine for everyone. my player is set to 'letterbox" and that seems to work fine for all disks. the black edge is barely visible. Losing a loved pet is a hard process. I was very depressed when we lost our previous kitty, so much so that DH wanted me to go on antidepressants for a while. exercise seemed to help though it was hard to get going.

Good morning,

2 more days until the weekend, I can't wait. The only thing we have is my nephew's one year birthday party on Saturday. I am glad my niece is having it on Saturday, nothing I hate more is something that has to be done on Sunday night.

Josie, keep us up to date on the new program, it's sounds interesting. That bike ride should be a breeze for you.

Garance, I saw Jaws when it first came out, and liked it then. I never had the desire to see it again though. The only movie I will watch over and over is To Kill A Mockingbird.

Valerie, where do you put all the stuff from the dining room when you have to move it out to have the floors done? We have so much stuff in our living room, there would be no room left. I know I will be feeling better as time goes on, regarding Kelsey. I know we did the right thing, it is just hard to be motiviated to do anything but what absolutely has to be done, like go to work. It is good that Keegan is here, it helps a lot too.

Take care, stay warm,

Deb, our living room and dining room are one big room. chairs to the basement, table temporarily in the living room. living room is not real usable but we don't ever use it much. old carpet is under the truck in the garage. costs almost the same at the dump for a big or small load, and we'll be accumulating more. our family room is our main "living" room. I would never pick the stupid floor plan we have, but this was the house design the builder put here, so we live with it.
I should add that I did not take antidepressants after my cat passed. DH brought me a sample and just one pill drove me completely batty. like 10,000 cups of caffeinated coffee! really unpleasant. I went to the shelter looking for a new kitty a couple days later and that helped ... he is a very sweet little guy with a totally different personality... everyone is different and you still have your other doggie. I was already semi retired ( doing home based computer work) and I spent a lot of time at home alone, and my kitty was main companion.

Josie, I was thinking that 55 miles will be a looooong ride unless you get your "undercarriage" hardened up between now and Feb.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.).

Deb, I think I only saw it once when it came out, too, because I had forgotten how much I liked Richard Dreyfus in his youthful days. I think what's smart about the film is the balancing of the three characters--an "old salt" who hates sharks because of a Navy experience in WW II, a chief of police who does not even like to swim, and a shark expert and rich boy who has been studying sharks since he was a kid. I dread this afternoon, but at least it's a short film (88 min.). Then next week we start with Bringing Up Baby, which I could watch a million times and never get tired of it. Cary Grant and Kathryn Hepburn. Hilarious!

Valerie, what are you doing to tweak your diet to lose weight? I'm just pleased that I did not gain back the weight I lost when I broke my elbow. I'm trying to stay at mini, mini portions, which is sometimes very hard. My mashed potatoes last night were sooo good that I wanted a bigger helping.

Josie, yes, yes, keep us all in the loop on your new program.

Ahh, portion size. I'm always working on this. Since Dec I've been more focused. when DH and I hike or ski we usually have a long drive and take a PB&J sandwich to eat before we leave. I cut to half sandwich. when we have chips, I count what I eat and have been staying at 5 or less. I've eliminated most but not all bread. I never use butter/ mayo so nothing to cut there. I have a large salad every night with 1/4 of an avocado and real vinaigrette because I like it and can't stand 'diet" dressing. I use as little as possible. when we have fish I've been cutting my portion in half and having the other half for lunch the next day. dessert (when we have it) is 1 chocolate truffle that is less than 1/4 ounce. I've gotten back to harder treadmill workouts. I was getting a little lax. I'm doing 2 yoga classes a week rather than 1. when I serve our dinner I'm making a big effort to give myself half what I give DH except for salad. we had one dessert in Dec at a restaurant and we split that, chocolate mud pie. it was wonderful. I've only eaten one cookie out of the cookies I made in Dec. I cut it into fourths and treated each like a whole cookie. My weight has been stable, I haven't gained and cut to where I can't eliminate much more without being constantly hungry. .

today, I did disk 26. Geez, that is a tough workout, plyo legs. I need to take slightly longer rests after the plyo segment. I go by heart rate & wait til I drop to 140 before continuing, maybe an extra 15 seconds. I get up to 160 after some of the 30 second bursts and that's high enough.

One thing I'd like to do is eliminate the agave syrup on my oatmeal. is there any artificial sweetener that doesn't taste funny? generally I don't like it other than in the (rare) diet soda I drink. I can't get unsweetened oatmeal down, gotta have something on it.
