Good morning!

Just finished putting the spelt in the breadmaker, did a short version of STS total body earlier. I have to get back to the workouts, I can feel myself getting heavier, and I refuse to step on a scale.

We did speak with the 2 breeders that we wanted to see. The one from Syracuse said he is having 2 of his females bred this coming week. We'll see if it "takes" then the waiting begins. We watched them show the Wires. So sassy! I love the way they prance around the ring. Not that I would ever be interested in showing for conformation, it's just nice to watch once in a while.

I have to get out to the store to get the ingredients for my cranberry bars, it's so cold and we have lots of snow. ugh

Stay warm!! of course this does not apply to Josie!

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Tracy Mallett's Pilates Sculpt (60 min.).

I will be working on my Freud this afternoon, then I'm off to see Black Swan while DH watches the Patriots-Jets game.

Just received my Jacob's Pillow schedule, so I will have to get together with my women friends to choose which performances we will go to. Darn--there's a tango troupe the week I will be at the Jersey shore, and I love tango.

I'm with Deb on the "stay warm" mantra. It's supposed to go way down tonight because it's so clear. The one thing I really like about cold weather is that it's perfect for comfort food. Tomorrow I'm making black bean soup and later in the week a pot roast and mashed potatoes. Love this stuff! Grilling in the summer and braising in the winter.

I've been lazy all day so now I have to start work. I did get 3.6 miles in today. I'm trying to decide if I "want" to do a full body wo now in case I'm busier Tuesday. I do break up my wo. Usually I only get 1/2 hour of walking in at a time and then later in the evening the weights. It's still 2 hours out of a day.

I've decided motivation is overrated. I will never want to exercise I just have to do it.

Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer. As long as we don't get freezing rain first. I get hair colored tomorrow at 9am.

Joan

Garance, I love comfort food, too bad it's usually bad for you! Soups can be made to be " good" but most of the comfort has to be taken out. :)

Joan, 3.5 miles on the treadmill is pretty good for a workout! I could not do that and then do weights in the same day. I guess I could once or twice but then I would burn out and really not want to do anything after that. Maybe you should put some interval training into the cardio workouts? That kind of shakes things up, ( literally, but that's not what I meant;)), so that you burn more calories than when you do a steady state workout. Do you have an Mp3 player? The I-Tread walking workout is pretty good for that.

Hi to Josie, Valerie, & Cathy,

again, stay warm! IT'S 1 DEGREE HERE RIGHT NOW..BRRRR....

It's been about 55 degrees here and raining for DAYS. everything is flooded, warm rain melts the existing snow so a double load of water. this is not unusual but it's one reason most people take winter vacations to someplace, any place, where it's not raining. it might even have been 60 yesterday, very mild. but too wet to do anything. so we did some basement cleaning, and have a load of things for recycle, a used book store and the dump. that will be our fun project today. somehow on our last move 20 years ago we didn't have time to weed out things, and basically boxed it up and moved it and much has not been looked at since. so, way overdue.

I did a bike and treadmill workout saturday. sunday I took off. today we had hoped to mt bike but it's probably too wet so I'll do treadmill and disk 30 or 31, I forget which is next.

I tested 3 kinds of artificial sweetener and all seem OK to me. sweet & Low, Equal, and I forget the other. I don't need much because almond milk is slightly sweet so this will trim another 100 cal a day. DH says he wants to lose a few pounds too so it will be better if we both are trying. he loves corn chips, potato chips and won't give those up. I get by with eating 1 or 2 and then looking the other way.
Joan, that's a lot of mileage. sometimes I enjoy a workout ( motivation) once I get going but I tend to procrastinate though I usually get to it eventually. I like weight workouts but frankly don't think there's much calorie burn for me. I have more muscle than I used to, but it doesn't make any difference for weight loss or how much I can (or cannot) eat.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did KCM's Bootcamp Circuit, both 30 minute workouts (55 min.).

Black Swan was pretty hair-raising (or feather-raising). I actually yelped a couple times. Makes you think twice about 1) being a ballerina and 2) Swan Lake. I think I always knew how disciplined and potentially unhealthy (anorexia, bulimia, tortured feet) you had to be in order to become a ballerina and stay at the top of your game, but I never really analyzed Swan Lake as really kind of a crazy narrative. Natalie Portman was brilliant and so beautiful in a fragile way, and it looks like she will be getting all of the major awards (she just took the Golden Globe last night), but what a painful role. At one point she hallucinates that she is turning into the black swan and pulls out of her back these little baby wings. Agh! Her mother is a horror story all by herself.

Joan, putting in 2 hours a day would be torture for me. I feel like a martyr if I do over 60 minutes, as I occasionally do. I also like to mix it up and keep things varied and fresh in terms of the type of workout. I always know I'm going to feel good after I work out, so I remind myself every morning, even during these dark days of winter when I really would like to continue sleeping.

Deb, I don't think either my soup or my pot roast are too bad. The mashed potatoes are TROUBLE, but I just will have a small portion with my roast, and a small dollop of low fat sour cream with my soup. Lots of good veggies in both recipes.

Valerie, it's 8 degrees here today. Sunny, clear, and a lot of snirt (dirty snow) on the ground. I think I would hate your weather, because sometimes we get a lot of rain here, and I just start feeling gloomy and bleak.

Hi to Josie and Cathy!

It's a mixed bag... we have flowers blooming now or soon, like sarcococca, witch hazel and hellebores, heather. so it's more like spring most places. but sometimes the rain gets dismal. a love-hate thing!

I think the issue is that joan and I both are trying to lose while lynda, you are maintaining. sometimes gotta work harder for the extra burn to lose a few pounds. I will be getting off to the gym momentarily. you gotta do what you gotta do.

we've been trying to hook up our satellite radio so it works better when we have the camper on. really amazing how many people and places we've asked and gotten no where until yesterday. we put on an extra antenna today and it looks like it works. whoopee... hopefully no more losing the signal constantly because of the camper overhang over the top of the truck, and the antenna.

If I can eat what little I eat, I can't imagine what a tiny skinny ballerina must need get by on. distilled water and occasional carrot sticks? admittedly they are physically active a lot but they are so terribly thin.
Snirt... what a great word for dirty snow. never heard that before but it fits.

Valerie, I'm with Garance, I don't think I could take all that rain. It was 1 degree here when I went to work yesterday, but the sky was so blue, and the sun was shining so bright that I had to wear sunglasses in the car. I like the sun, makes me feel better. I agree, weight workouts are not much calorie burn unless you are doing heavy leg work and go for about an hour. My workout today was 30 minutes and I burned 155 calories.

Garance, that movie sounds hair raising allright...wow...is it out in the shows now? I do not pay much attention to movies.

Hi to Josie & Cathy, Josie, how are the workouts going?

Take care,

yesterday had planned on working out early after DH but he found out about how to hook up the radio so wanted to go do that right away. but we'd already loaded the truck with the junk for the dump so that had to happen first. I put off my workout. did dump run, then shopping. then had to eat lunch, he won't delay a meal without a lot of grousing. then install the antenna, which wasn't that simple. but it works.

The camper extends over the truck cab roof , interferes with radioreception. we like satellite radio since we're often out in the middle of nowhere. we've been paying & getting crummy reception, cutting in and out constantly. sirius radio, the ford dealer , camper dealer were no help. couldn't even identify the antenna. DH googled for it and found an on-line forum with other camper owners with the same radio issue. got an idea of what to look for & how to do it. Looks like we succeeded. won't be able to tell for sure until we put the camper on and go somewhere but for $40 it was worth a try.

So it's now 3 and I still haven't had work out time. so, I did 15 bike, 20 treadmill, and disk 31. I pushed weight, DH spotted chest presses. I went to 70 pounds. It's only 6 reps, 90% of 1 RM. I am proud! I did 60 lbs on the incline ones. I think I could have done 65 but DH was nowhere to be found. I'm a little sore today, but upper body is never like lower body DOMS.

we are done with most rain by today. I get tired of it sometimes, but when we have snow, that's worse. every place has some sort of weather issue during some time of year, have to find what you can live with.

Deb, I've only viewed the new disks. I'm on schedule to finish STS in 3 months and I'm not going to get distracted. but good to know that's a good workout! DH did it once and liked it.

Josie, we want to hear more about the new program.
Joan, I don't always enjoy working out when I'm doing it, but always feel good after. besides, I'd weigh 300 lbs if I didn't work hard.... that helps the motivation.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Bootcamp Boogie (63 min.).

Yes, Deb, Black Swan is out in theaters still. I try to see all the BIG films before the Oscars. The King's Speech will be here the end of January (although I could also go see it at the mall), and I definitely want to see The Fighter and The Town. I bought the Social Network on Blu-ray, so I will finally see that. Did not much care for The Kids Are All Right, and Annette Bening looked kind of crazed with her hair off in myriad spikey directions at the Golden Globes. Have also seen True Grit and Winter's Bone. Not sure what else will be up. Oh, yes, Inception. I must watch that one a second time. I need to concentrate more.

Well, if what they say is true--i.e., that weight loss is more about diet than exercise--then I would be shocked if you did not lose some weight, Valerie. It's true, all I am doing is maintaining after losing some weight with the broken elbow. Not sure when I will get to STS again. I am too much enjoying my barre and light weights. I actually think I look more cut than when I was doing the STS, but this may be because of the weight I lost.

Hey Josie, what's up with your workout program? What are you learning from the nutritionist?

Hi to Joan and Cathy!

Got artificial sweetener, Equal, and Splenda. there goes 100+ cal/day. my cereal is the only place I'll use it. I can't get by on much less food so making sure the cardio gets done. If DH joints in, it might be easier to keep foods diet friendly, but men always lose weight so easily it might be an annoyance too.

Yoga was quite tough this morning, this morning, she works us HARD. too fat to ever look 'cut' here, but I can dream. I have plenty of muscle but it's buried, and with my body type I'm afraid it will not change.

Lynda, I try to see movies before the oscars too. "The Kids Are All Right" was good. I enjoyed it. I really enjoy watching the young woman ( alice in wonderland) whose name escapes me right now. Wasikowsky? "Winters Bone" I didn't care for. the others are on my queue but doubt I'll get them before the oscars, which I'm thinking are sometime in Feb. but the waits are long or they're not even on netflix yet. My favorite annette Bening movie is The Grifters but DH dislikes it. her hair did look like an electrocution in process.

I wish I were at maintenance weight although my past hx is to get there and to gradually regain the same blasted 10 lbs until I get ticked off, and lose it again. and then start regaining. I must eat just a few more calories than I burn consistently, cause it's never a big splurge kind of thing. I don't binge eat or anything/

Good morning,

I had a bad night's sleep, no workout this morning. I would love to be able to get 6 hours of sleep in a row, without waking up every hour or so. I am trying not to take the tylenol pm any more, since reading bad things about acedominophin (sp?). I bought Unisom, but read bad things about the active ingredient in that too, and it says you should not take it for more than 2 weeks.

Garance, I agree about weight loss being 90% diet, but also think that if you do weight work, you burn more calories while going about your normal day.

Valerie, doesn't it make you feel good when you finally solve a problem that has been there for a while? I bet you and your DH will be smiling when that radio works.

Joan, how is the DVD issue going? Are you able to do the new workouts yet?

Off to get some much needed coffee, take care.

Hi Ladies,

Yesterday's work out was running. We did our warm up and then we did what they call death by 10 yards. We ran back and forth for as many reps as we could do for one minute. The first minute we did one, then 2 for the second minute and so on. I got to 13 minutes for a total of 91 reps and I could not do anymore. I was so sweaty and tired. Today we are going to our first nutrition class. I will share the information they give me with you when I get it.

Valerie, I use splenda. That is the only one I like.

Garance, I plan to go see Black Swan this weekend with my DD. I love movies that scare me while I'm watching.

Hi Joan, Deb and Cathy!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Squeeze (56 min.).

Yesterday was freezing rain, and today it's more snow. This has been quite a January. And the latest prediction is for sub-zero temps on Sat. and Sun.

Josie, that sounds tough. So far I don't think I could do any of your assignments with any competence. I gave up jogging in my 40s and can't imagine doing sprints like that without my knees suffering. More power to you! I will be interested to hear what you think of Black Swan.

Deb, I heard something about acetaminophen and liver damage recently, so you are probably right to roll back on the amount you take. Maybe you can take advil pm? Is it the snoring that wakes you? Yeah, I've heard that weight work is supposed to give you some after workout calorie burning. I wonder when we will get our KCM's.

Anyone watching American Idol tonight? I always enjoy the try-outs.

hi all, i am alive, thanks for not forgetting me. i have been working out , just havin a hard time gettin to the computer.
LOL! deb, i love your little guys, too cute.

Good morning,
Slept in today, at least until the alarm rang at 5:45!
bigavatar_rev15.gif
...Now I am running late,

Garance, thanks for telling me about the Advil PM...it's ingredient is ibuprofen. Not sure if that is good to take every day, but may be better than the other. We had ice here yesterday, now it's supposed to get really cold again. Just in time for the weekend.

Josie, that running sounds hard! I would love to hear about the nutrition plan they give you.

Cathy, good to have you drop in, even if it is not every day.

Valerie, missed you yesterday, were you and DH out doing something fun?

Joan, what's up in your world?

Take care,

Back again. Tuesday late afternoon did disk 32 plyo legs. not too bad. I like the oplyo ones though I adjust the intensity a little, like 3 risers instead of 4 but mostly I do it.

wed morning we split wood, good upper body stuff. then we went for the long planned for bike ride with the new cold weather gear. we did only 20 miles but was Ok. some starts and stops getting layers adjusted. about 45 degrees and partly sunny. not frigid but the wind chill is hard to adjust for. Our previous attempt it was cloudy and about 36 so we over compensated this time. too warm, too cold, too warm, too cold. layers on, layers off. not as nice as when it's warm but a decent 2 hours of cardio. my butt needs to get hardened up!

Deb, the main issue with tylenol (acetominophen) is many times people take plain tylenol for aches/pains, and don't realize cold meds and cough syrups ( several ingredients) may contain tylenol too. they can layer on too much because they don't look at the ingredients of the combination products. especially if it's a med they're taking 4 x a day. at some point, I don't remember how many mg, tylenol is hard on the liver. too much of anything isn't good... but with acetominophen as a part of so many other products it can get over the limit if you're not looking at individual ingredients.

Ibuprofen ( advil) is pretty well tolerated. some people get stomach issues with it, and the whole class of drugs called NSAIDS, kind of like with with aspirin. either tylenol or ibuprofen may help with the sleep issue by relieving minor aches/pains but diphenhydramine is the ingredient in both "PM" meds that makes people sleepy. you can buy plain diphenhydramine (benadryl) all by itself and skip the tylenol or advil altogether.

am I being clear or just confusing the issue? when I really KNOW I will have a difficult night, Ambien works best for me but I don't take it often. It's Rx only but it works well without making you feel bad the next day.

Josie, that sounds like a tough workout! congrats on 91 reps!. I bought both equal and splenda, and will see which works best. so far on cereal they seem pretty similar to me and I can use them to trim calories.

we're getting displaced again sometime tomorrow for the next section of floor. not sure when I'll be back but it will be stinky for a few times the next several days.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.).

I have a cold and feel lousy. I tried to stave it off with Cold-eez, but it's definitely moved in for a few days. I may sleep in tomorrow if I'm not so stuffed up that I can't sleep.

Valerie, that sounds like what I heard about acetaminophen and, in addition, that they were reducing the amount of it in painkillers. What I've also heard, though, about too much benadryl is that if you are a daily user, it increases the number of white blood cells. I had a friend who was scared to death when she got this really strange lab result, and then her blood turned back to normal levels after she got off tylenol pm, which she had been using constantly.

Deb, your pickle (?) looks like it had a great night's sleep. You are getting the same weather up there as we are down here. More snow tonight into tomorrow and then very cold weekend. Makes me want to hibernate.

Swamped with work but at least I didn't have to babysit today. We had a foot of snow so no school.

Deb to get a good night sleep I just sleep on the couch. My dh's snoring was just too much. We meet in bed for nonsleep activities.

I shoveled half my driveway. Dh had already got his side.I also did half my neighbors driveway. It took dh 45 min to go the last 5 miles to work. The snowplows were side by side on the highway so no passing.

Joan

People get the idea if a drug is OTC it's entirely benign, and they can take as much as they want as often as they want. especially with tylenol, it's an ingredient in so many other combo meds and you can unknowingly take too much and cause liver damage. one tylenol pm a night is *nowhere* close to that kind of amount. both DH and I use benadryl, plain or in tylenol PM pretty regularly and have no issues. that doesn't mean someone else won't. If you read the PDR you'd never take ANY meds! not getting restful sleep is a problem itself though, and I try to take as little of anything as possible. I do all the things I'm supposed to and still it's a major event if I sleep thru the night.

Lynda, sorry about the cold... always a drag. I feel so lousy when I get one that I work very hard to avoid exposure. If I get one that settles in, I'm done for a week. If I get it early with vit C (though it's not supposed to work) , cold eze, lots of sleep I can often head off the worst of it. not always though.

raining here again, yesterday was the good day. mixed snow and rain, definitely not nice but we don't have to shovel it! snow shoveling is a great workout but I'd rather do anything else.

My idea behind getting into weight training was maintaining/ building some muscle because more muscle makes activities easier, but also for the extra calorie burn it provides. As people get older they lose a big per cent of muscle mass and end up with a larger per cent fat even if they weigh the same. I shudder to think how little I'd be able to eat if I weren't keeping up the muscle mass.
