Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/11

Good evening ladies!

I did great with Tabatacise yesterday. Better than I thought I would. Completed all five and felt great. Wasn't sure if I would start like I did cross fire with all the Hiit then decide I wasn't feeling it. The rest day on Monday helped. Today was RWH back, shoulders and bis. Seemed to move right along. I think I was supposed to do the Bonus Abs 1 but completely forgot.

Deb...Restasis as Valerie mentioned are the drops. Not sure what he will put me on though. I do not think I would like a doggie door either. We have some crazy wild animals where I live and I would be afraid something would find it's way in.

Valerie...great job on the hike. Oh to have it 40 or 50 degrees right now. I would be very happy with that!

Lynda...yes the tears were from 5lb weights if you can believe that. I was doing The Firm 500 calorie workout and must have moved the wrong way and ended up causing small tears at the bottom of my biceps. During the workout I felt a little something but did not feel it was anything so I continued. When I was almost done it really started to hurt and of course I stopped but the damage was done. I am smarter now and always stop when I feel any pain at all. Took forever to heal.

Josie...sounds like the personal trainer will be great for you and your DH. Makes sense about the feeling of accomplishment on your bike vs a spin.

Hi to Judy!!!!!

Have a great night all.

Good morning,
coffee.gif

No workout this morning, dogs got me up at 2:30, then again at 3:00...John got up with them that time, but I was still awoken. Ugh....

Lynda, that Virgin show sounds very predictable. Are the people good actors? Yes, there are probably movies I could watch, but I would have to do some research, I am not really into movies as they are at the shows, so I don't know what would be good etc.

Valerie, that was some hike! I can't imagine doing that in 40-50 degree weather. It's probably more comfortable than when it is hot out though. Yes, it was Restasis I was trying to remember. We have a corner lot, so a big side yard. It is fenced in with a 5.5 foot stockade fence. However, because it is a side yard, anyone walking down the street can get access over the fence easily. We had 2 other dogs poisoned a long time ago. ( they were both ok after emergency vet visit), We didn't find anything in particular but the vet said it was rat poison and we certainly didn't use any or have it anywhere in our yard. We thought at the time that someone may have tossed something over the fence. It is just too exposed for me ( nervous nelly that I am about these dogs LOL)..Yes, I have heard there are problems with other animals getting in too.

Lori, sometimes a rest day is just what you need. ahhh...The Firm...a blast from the past! I used to love those...the first 6 were the best. They were what started me on weight training.

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Work, then home to
smiley-sleep027.gif

Hi Everyone,

Sunday I did STS Back & Biceps, Monday I did a Spinerval, Tuesday I felt like doing full body so I did Muscle Max and Ab Hits. Yesterday I did Medicine Ball Abs and Stability Ball Abs then one of the Cathe Live spin classes. I backed off on the RWH Plyo workouts this week as I think that might have been the cause of my leg soreness last week. I have an adjustment and massage scheduled for tomorrow and will try the Plyo workouts again next week and see how it goes.

Deb-Great job on your rotations! Yes, you just put a regular bike on the trainer and ride it. You can adjust the tension on the trainer as well as use the bike gears to adjust the resistance. We have a mountain bike on it now and it seems to work fine.

Valerie-I've heard the La Monde spin bikes are very nice. It was really hard for me to find a spin bike locally too. I started out with a Spinner Sport that we found at Sears for $299. That was 6 years ago. In July 2013 we saw a Cyclops 300 pro at REI. Someone had ordered it and not picked it up so they put it out on the floor. I tried it out and really liked it so DH got it for me as an early birthday and Christmas present. I've been using it for spinning workouts and Spinervals since then. We got the trainer more for DH, as he doesn't like riding the Cyclops or any spinning bike. Now I just have to get him to use it :)

Lynda-I've been watching DA too and have the same feeling as you do. It seems like they are losing something. I still enjoy it but not as much as I did the first seasons.

Lori-yes the bike trainers have gotten pretty expensive. I had one back in the 90's and it was under $100. But it was also extremely loud and I ended up selling it to a friend as I thought it was too loud to use in my apartment. The new ones are quieter and the new, really expensive ones like the KICKR have Bluetooth and power meters and connect to smart phones. I don't even know how they work, haven't really looked at them.

Josie-Good luck with your training sessions. It sounds like you found a good one for you and your DH.

Judy

Hi Ladies,

I went for a power walk yesterday around my neighborhood and ended up walking for 2 hours :). Today Karina is training us, and let me tell you. I'm very sore from Tuesday's workout.

I got the medical release form signed from my Dr. she was laughing because I told her that I was ancient now and needed it ;)

Lynda, I tried to watch the Jane the Virgin show and thought like you that it was like a telenovela. I turned it off half way. Our trainer is charging us $100 per session. We are saving so much money by not working that we decided to invest on ourselves. The going rates around here are $80-100 per session per person, so I think that we are getting a great deal.

Deb, sometimes you just need your rest when your sleep gets interrupted. I have been going to bed around 11 PM lately and have been waking up around 7:30 and sometimes 8:00. That is late for me, but I guess my body needs it.

Valerie, that sounds like a great hike.

Lori, I'm not crazy about plyo workouts. You are amazing on all the high impact workouts and that is because you are the baby of our group ;).

Judy, did you finish your gym yet?

Josie

Judy we had a bike trainer once. yes, it was way too loud to watch TV. the roar was like a jet engine. so strange how hard it was to find a spin bike..... kept seeing fleets of them in gyms...so I thought it would be easy... but it was a battle. at the time REI had a very expensive one and nothing else. we ended up getting it at Precor a "local" company here. a lot of exercise equipment stores were disappearing from the market, so we bought from them because they'd stay in business. it turned out to be a nice bike. DH uses it regularly, me occasionally. I think i'll use it more now that he's not doing clipless. not that hard to change them out but sometimes that extra 10 minute step discouraged me from using it.

Deb, 40-50 degrees is fine for hiking.... layered shirts, hat and gloves is plenty. no ice until we got near the lake. I'm best in cool weather so I don't overheat. it felt almost balmy there with sunshine, as we had cold fog down lower.
that is awful about your dogs being poisoned. just crazy! How lucky you were to get them treated. how awful someone thought that was an OK thing to do. there are some crazies walking the streets. no other possible explanation. Does seem like they get into a pattern though, and something about 2:30 am has them interested right now. I don't blame you for watching them, I just think 2:30 will get old quickly in addition to messing with your workouts. I've heard about raccoons and stray cats getting in thru doggie doors.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did ba, sh, and bis from RWH (52:28).

Deb, I wonder what gets the dogs going at that hour. I would worry if Max woke us up in the middle of the night that there was something going on outside we should pay attention to.

Valerie, that sounds like a great hike. I agree that 40-50 degrees is ideal for a vigorous hike. I heat up pretty quickly when I'm hiking and I hate to be overdressed. Did you by any chance see those two climbers who did El Capitan on the smooth side? Wow--took them 19 days and very scary. By the way, I don't think Transparent is available anywhere else but Amazon because they produced the show. Maybe if it later comes out on DVD.

Josie, that sounds reasonable for training both of you. I have a second episode of Jane recorded and might take another look to see what all the hoopla is about.

Lori, good work on Tabatacize. That's the one I sold immediately. No way could I do all that impact without bad consequences. Gee, do you think your biceps were just not warm enough? It sounds like such a strange injury--or makes me wonder how common it is. I can do that belly exercise for the rear delts, but if I use 5 lbs., my legs want to go up and I arch my back. So I am down to 3 lbs., and that worked for me. I still felt it.

Hi to Judy!

037.gif

It's blowing, and so windy here, I could hear the wind all night. Needless to say, it wasn't a good sleep. I can't blame the dogs this time.

Judy, those plyo workouts are tough! Also tough on the joints. Good that you are putting some time between them. Hope the adjustment and massage helps today.

Josie, is your training session the Beach one, or is it in a gym? do you use weights?

Valerie, yes, small animals could get into the doggie door, and we have had enough of them ( 3 or 4 squirrels, I lost count) getting in the house without a doggie door! It is getting old. If I was retired, I would be taking a nap every day. How is the bathroom coming along?

Lynda, I suspect it's the paper person that wakes them up. I heard her this morning at 3:30. The dogs stirred and Keegan "woofed" once, but they didn't get up. Before you retired, did everyone ask you, "What are you going to do all day?"...? I hate that question. It makes me doubt my decision.

Lori, any remodeling projects this weekend?

Work, then agility class tonight, if I can stay awake.

Take care,

Yes squirrels! known for acrobatics and trickery for getting into bird feeders etc. it would be a simple thing to walk in a doggie door. I never had a doggie door so I assumed they required a certain amount of push to open. whatever, not my best idea.

got my test results back on my ANA test( antinuclear antibody) and it was negative. so no worries about autoimmune ailments like RA. that leaves my hand with the first diagnosis of chilblains. slowly getting better. worst in the am and gets better as the day goes on. I bought more gloves yesterday to keep it warmer and dryer and without needing to be washed as often. washable yard work gloves. they are thin and stretchy so dexterity is not impaired too much. they fit better than kitchen rubber gloves.

bathroom is moving along. they finished the grouting yesterday. we can move things back into the closet today or tomorrow. ordering the shower door today. have to decide on countertop material. either granite or quartz. quartz is more expensive but cut and installed in a similar way. floor and tile turned out beautifully.

Deb .. I can't figure out how we had time to work. we ride and hike. Way better on weekdays. husband doesn't have to eat PB&J for lunch because I cook more. even shopping is better not on the weekend. our house is cleaner and less messy, and the garden gets more attention. mostly, it's less hectic. we wake up when we want. we still get up early but it's lovely knowing you can wake up normally without an alarm. DH and I get to go more places with less scheduling and planning.

the climbers on el cap were amazing. very well supported by many who took care of the "everyday" things to keep them supplied. I am NOT a climber but I have admiration for anyone who can do it. I tried briefly in a mountaineering class, but no. hate exposure and have zero rock climbing skills. I found all the ropes and cams and waiting completely annoying.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did low impact hiit 2 with abs 2 (39:12).

Deb, people would always ask me if I would miss teaching. I always said that I just couldn't grade papers anymore. I don't have any problems keeping busy and I bet you won't either. If nothing else, maybe you will get some much deserved zzzzz. I like to sew and knit, read and have long lunches with friends, do some writing and recently some volunteer work at a women's shelter. I drive them to court appearances. Like Valerie, I do more cooking and recipe planning. I go to the art museums in the area (we have Mass Moca, the Clark, and the College museum) when they have new exhibitions, and I go to quite a few films and dances, and recently the college did a production of Hamlet that I enjoyed. When the weather is nice, I like to take Max for walks, and there's always my workouts. I don't ever feel like I would rather be grading papers to keep busy.

I think I will go to see Selma this weekend.

Chilblains? DH had those a couple years ago and now uses handwarmers--those things that heat up and you put them in your gloves. The dermatologist said to keep his hands dry and warm instead of wet and cold.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and stay warm!

Lynda, it's chilblains, also known as pernio. my derm had not seen it before, and she's not a newbie. I read more about it because there was no "event" to start off the process as far as I can tell. I went back and looked at what activities I did in the few days preceding the onset this time. no wet outdoor gardening or biking, just kitchen patrol. the 3 middle fingers of my right hand. It's the same thing I had last year but no one recognized it until I saw this derm, but it was at the tail end of it. with the recurrence, she was going to check and rule out more serious systemic diseases. so glad it isn't something more serious, not that this is any fun.

I am looking forward to your review of Selma, since it seemingly got displaced by the Sniper movie since the golden globes.

Good evening ladies...

Yesterday I did Cathe Live Lean lower body and today I did 45 mins of SB Barre followed up with some heavybag.

Deb...I started with the Firm years ago. I remember they were so expensive back in the day. Is there anyway you can get a hold of the newspaper people to make them aware as to how loud they are? That would drive me nuts. Lol! On the home improvements. I have one more shelving unit to install which is kind of an add on from the original project but that is all for this weekend!

Lynda...apparently the injury is quite common I had learned. The recovery took forever. I spent an entire summer in PT for it to flare up again. Then ended up having a surgical procedure where they went it with a needle guided by ultrasound and they pricked to reinjure in hopes to get my body to start healing again. Then another summer of PT. I was miserable. I think the protesters on 93 yesterday had their efforts backfire on them. I believe in free speech but I also believe you need to be smart about it too.

Valerie...great news that all is negative! Your bathroom sounds like it is really coming along nicely. Oh to hear you, Lynda and Jose to talk of retirement. I have such a long way to go!

Josie...actually I think Judy is a year younger so technically she is the young one of the group!! :). A 2 hour power walk is awesome! I miss my walks with Chester. It has just been too cold here. I usually walk in the winter but this year the temp has been ridiculous.

Judy...I like the RWH/Xtrain rotation I am currently doing. I have subbed a couple of the workouts but pretty much stayed with it. I am in my last week. I think I am going to start with her January rotation and see how this works out.

Have a great weekend!

Good morning & happy weekend!
I got to sleep in until 4:41 this morning...
banana016.gif
The dogs must have been tired because of class last night and they didn't get to sleep after dinner.

Valerie, glad your test results were good. I think those hand warmer things would be just the thing for you. Any particular color scheme for the bathroom? the counter etc?

Lynda, Will wait to hear your review of the movie. What movies are going to be or have been nominated for the Oscar? I read something about Jennifer Aston being "snubbed"..I think when people ask "what are you going to do all day? they expect you to say something like, "oh I'm going to travel, go to Europe",,etc. Travelling is not high on my list! LOL. One of the reasons I am retiring is that I am sick of business travel..( as you all know. LOL). I want to do more work with the dogs, get them certified to do therapy work again, visit places like schools, or nursing homes. I also want to get back to quilting, and heaven knows, my house has many projects that I have put off for years. I have 2 old steamer trunks in the attic that were used when my grandfather came over from Italy, and I would like to try to restore one and bring it downstairs and use it.

Lori, I wish I had the skills you learned for fixing and remodeling! Great jog on the rotation. I am going to start mine over this Sunday, I only did 3 of the 5 workouts this week due to sleep stuff.

Hi to Judy, & Josie,

have class this morning, then we have a Gurney ( I think that's how you spell his name). play to go to this afternoon. It has "Furniture"..in the name...maybe Family Furniture. ...Looking forward to that.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Ladies,

Yesterday was a rest day. Today I walked 3 miles with my friend this morning and will be going to body pump later on.

Deb, the trainer comes to our house. We use weights, bands and body weight.
The beach boot camp will be on Monday, Wednesday and Friday's starting February 2nd.

I will be back later.

Josie

Deb, I don't want to use hand warmers inside my house! my hands are never cold outside.... I'm good about wearing gloves (always) riding and hiking. I put them on before I start, keep them on, prefer to unzip my jacket for temp control. this must be related to getting cold and wet while working in the kitchen. it apparently is more common in more humid conditions and temps around 50, not icy cold arctic conditions.
I thought I did much better this year drying my hands and using the hand sprayer but apparently I still didn't do it well enough. My derm is on vacation for 2 weeks so I should be healed before she returns. I will review with her what I can do to make sure I don't have any more repeats.
I'm with you on the business travel. don't care if I ever see another airplane/motel. you'll find loads of things to do... can work out any time too, not stuck with 4 am. Is DH considering retirement yet? we like traveling in our camper and hiking and biking in new areas.
Jennifer Anniston was mentioned at the GG awards for a movie called "Cake". I'm not familiar with it but I generally avoid her movies because most aren't very good.
bathroom is off white, marble-look large tile with a line of decorative square glass tiles, floor is a "slate" looking 16 inch synthetic "tile" that is gray tan, off white. heavy clear glass sliding door walk in shower. double sink vanity with oak cabinets original. we are going as neutral as we can. brushed nickel fixtures. undermount white sink with undecided countertop, either granite or quartz. . Our jacuzzi tub still looks pink so we are looking into getting it refinished rather than replaced.

Lori I hope I don't end up with a long drawn out process like you had. I see ortho tomorrow. I will go to PT if recommended, get a cortisone shot, or rest longer.. whatever he recommends.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a short workout before my adjustment & massage. I did part of KCM "Like a Contender" and 10 minutes of Horizontal Conditioning. The massage was great, I felt so much better yesterday and actually got a lot done afterwards. Getting caught up on laundry and cleaning and things.

Today was a rest day. DH and I spent most of the day looking for a new vanity for our downstairs bathroom. We finally found one we liked at Menards and brought it home. We had to order the vanity top so we can't put it in until that comes.

Deb-I really underestimated how tough the Plyo workouts were. I want to keep doing them, but I'm going to have to make sure I don't over do them.

Lori-Great job with the rotation! I'm starting the last week of the STS/RWH rotation tomorrow. I've subbed a few workouts too, but stayed with it for the most part. I think I will start the January rotation next too.
I turned 52 on Dec. 1, not sure if that makes me the youngest or not.

Valerie-That's great news about your test! It sounds like your bathroom will be beautiful. We are just replacing the vanity in our small bathroom, and will probably paint too.

Josie-I'm still working on the gym but I think I'm almost done. That is cool that you have a trainer coming to your house!

Hi to Lynda!
