Pentagenarians & Beyond 3/13

This is a rest day for me. The “spring forward” has me feeling a little off today. Not so much tired as sluggish. I hope that you are all having a nice Sunday.

I thought I might sleep "in" this morning, but no luck. we changed our clocks last night so we got up at our normal time. I don't have big issues with the time change except its a PITA and I wish we could settle on one "time" and just leave it. I'd be happy with DST or standard time, its the process I get tired of.

we expected rain today and maybe some clearing but it didn't rain much last night and seemed clear early, so I suggested a road ride. we did an hour and a half on the trail near our house. it was really nice out and a lot warmer than expected. not crowded for a nice sunday morning. usually weekdays are better, and early is always better. its about 15 miles so I try to push the speed for most of it.

Yesterday I did Disk 21, so tomorrow I'll be starting week 4 of Meso 2. I managed all the weights yesterday, but really wondering how I'll go heavier, but I've been thinking that for awhile and keep managing it. Today I did My IMAX workout. I woke up at 5 this morning, which of course my body is registering as 4 a.m. Nick worked the overnight shift and got home around 7:30 this morning and slept for 8 hours straight. Clearly he needed it. I'm really not a fan of the overnights especially when like last night he has a 35 minute drive home. We had snow again this morning, but now it's near 40 and most of the yard is clear again.

Carolyn I was surprised I had enough energy to workout. I did at least fall asleep before 10 last night.

Valerie that's great that you got a ride in this morning! We're going to be over 50 the next few days and I'm really looking forward to that.

I really need to get down to visit my parents this week. Last time I saw them was at Christmas and we masked. I'm thinking I want to go that way again. I'm super careful when I go out, so I feel like they are more of a risk to me than I am to them. They go out to eat at least once a week and generally do something out every day. They mask, but my Mom won't wear a KN95, Dad does, and she's a sloppy cloth mask wearer. My Dad would stay home a lot more, but she just can't handle that and I don't blame him for going along with her as she has early dementia and isn't terribly pleasant when she doesn't get her way and she has no filter to realize it. Her Mother was the same way.

This morning I did Fit Tower Advanced Bootcamp premix lower body and bonus abs skipping the plank work. This was 43 minutes, heart rate 113/138, 165 calories. I forgot to check steps, but I do not think it was very many. Maybe around 1000. I have been so tired all day. Time change is messing with me, and I went back to sleep after getting up and taking some Tylenol and slept till 10:00. Yesterday I did a CDorner step workout 36 minutes, heart rate 108/130. This was an intermediate workout. 2,936 steps. I then started her neck and upper back stretch she did 11 days ago. It froze and kept spinning 8 minutes in. I tried to get it and gave up. Besides I could not do eagle arms and some of the other things. I went on to do Coffey FIt Raw athletic stretch which was mostly lower body, I had to skip come upper body stuff and down dog. I just reached for my toes to get my hamstrings. Kelly holds the stretches for 2 minutes each.
I have been fatigued all weekend. I did get some cooking in. I am anticipating lots of running around this week with 3 PT sessions with consecutive days and my cardiovascular visit and ultrasound. The last few days I have finally got the blood pressure to lower to where it is real good. Hopefully it stays that way. I have quit all but the morning cup of coffee. I drink low acid decaf later. Pretty much no dairy other than around 1/4 cup of low-fat kefir. I have been taking a Blood Pressure Support supplement that seems to work well as long as I take 3 a day. I started with one as it said 1 to 3 times a day. I will take it with me when I talk to the doctor. I really like my Withings blood pressure monitor and the Health Mate app. It was rated in one of the top ones when I purchased. I take at least two readings to make sure they match up pretty well morning and night. They are all in the app so I can print off or send to the doctor. Or just show him on my cell. The snow from Friday is melted off and it is windy here today. I went out for a bit to put some fertilizer on the hydrangea. I am hoping it comes back okay. It is sort of sheltered and rain and snow does not hit it very much because of the overhang of the roof. The endless summer variety always did well for me when I kept them in pots, but I would either cover or set in a sheltered area during freezing temps.

Carolyn I was up late and then the time change just really left me sleepy. I have been wishing I could nap, but do not want to mess up needing to get up early all week.

Valerie, I kind of like it staying light longer in the evening. I would not mind it staying one or the other though. It was always difficult with my children and grandchildren with nap times and feeding. They really get used to a schedule and change is tough. I set all of our clocks last night. Missed one though as I noticed the coffee maker was not on the right time. I do not use timed coffee settings often though as I am not going to drink a pot by myself.

Cathy, I remember when my children would have jobs working till early in the morning and I never rested well till I heard them arrive home. That is sad that your mother has early dementia. I seem to know a lot of people with that or Alzheimer. My aunt has Alzheimer. I am so sad for her. She was always such a busy energetic little woman. I admired her for that. Her sister had it too and passed away a couple of years ago. Sad thing is my aunt traveled in her RV and towed her car every year and visited warmer states. One of her last trips she lost her cell phone and no one could reach her. What a worry that was. Recently her son called my brother to let him know they had to take her to her house and she was diagnosed. It really makes me sad. I am sure your parents love it when you visit.

This morning I did ICE Boot Camp Circuit for 49 minutes and 312 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 152. I love this workout because it hits all areas of the body—cardio, upper body, lower body, and core. It’s not at all what I think of when I see “Bootcamp” in a workout name.

Valerie, nice job with the Sunday ride. I always set my clocks before I go to bed with the time changes. I keep my usual schedule, but I can never sleep in. I have a very strong internal clock and I can never sleep beyond a certain time.

Cathy, great job with STS disc 21 and your IMAX cardio workout. I hope that you are able to see your parents this week.

Diane Sue, you are making great progress with getting back to your workouts. That’s sad about your aunt. You have mentioned how independent she was.

Hello to Judy.

we minimize the time disruption. resetting the night before helps. I never liked waking up and realizing it was an hour later than what I was looking at. amazing how many devices have clocks on them these days.

carolyn, I will take a look at Bootcamp today. I've done mainly intermediate workouts for a long time. don't like high impact anymore. I don't remember that one although I'm sure I've done it. was planning on a weight workout of some sort so I'll see how that works for me. I can get sidelined with mainly cardio workouts if I dont pay attention.

.

Last Chest, Shoulder, Triceps workout for Meso 2 today. Was really struggling with some of it and backed off a couple pounds on the incline chest presses, but did everything else. Had to pick up a wormer for Chester at the vets and then went to my parents for a couple hours. My Mom's mother had dementia and her sister who is now in her 90's also has it. My grandma was in her own home far longer than she should have been, but she was still cognizant enough that no one was going to get her out. Finally after she fell a couple times and was taken to the hospital they refused to release her to go home. My great aunt was much more willing to go into assisted living before she really needed it. My Mom is a LOT like her mother and there's no way to even get her to get tested. My Dad is the opposite and still fully functioning and he takes care of her and will bend over backwards to keep her happy. Not that that's always a good thing.

Diane Sue it's fantastic that you are able to get in regular workouts now even if you can't do everything!

Carolyn great job with the ICE Bootcamp! Do you have the original Bootcamp? It's a really good workout, and I should pull it out and do it again someday. It's a minute of each Upper, lower, cardio, core. I don't remember the order.

Valerie I used to set clocks ahead, but now a lot of my stuff automatically changes, and I just do the random stuff like stove and microwave when I get around to it.

Hi Everyone,

I need to get caught up on posting. I was off work this weekend and did 45 minute Peloton rides both days. Today I worked a 6 hour shift in paint and took a rest day from working out.

Cathy-We got a few inches of snow on Friday and some on Saturday too but it's mostly melted now. It was so nice to have temps in the high 50's today.
Great job with the meso 2 workouts. That's good that you were able to visit your parents today. I'm sorry about your mom.

Carolyn-Great job with ICE Boot Camp Circuit. I plan on doing an ICE workout tomorrow.

Valerie-Great ride! You are definitely an outdoor person. Hopefully I will be able to get out a little more this summer than the past couple of years.

Diane Sue- Great job with Fit Tower Advanced Bootcamp premix lower body and bonus abs. You are making great progress! I'm sorry about your aunt.

I couldnt find bootcamp in the Ice folder, must have misfiled it. so did chiseled upper body and icy core 1 along with several sets of knee push ups, dips, and tricep push ups. I must have stuck it in the wrong box.

Judy we bought some bags of mulch again at Lowes. 12 bags. we went in the garden center entrance, showed the salesperson the code, and off we went to the outdoor stacks. no offer to get it loaded for us. nobody to check us out or even look at our receipt. I cant imagine how much stuff must walk out of that store's parking lot! we didn't ask for help because 12 bags of mulch are no biggie for us to load, but wow. that is just so sloppy.

Dementia is one scary thing! my mother lived to 98 and got pretty useless the last few years but she did seem to know what was going on most of the time. She stayed in her home until the end, but only because my brother was living there. he took her to appts, cooked for her but only because he was planning on taking the whole property for himself and his wife, plus he used her house to store more of his junk. he is a hoarder. he was pretty mean to her besides. I don't think a nursing home would have been much of an improvement. he couldn't carry her so he made her get up and walk which a nursing home probably would have let slide by, but it did keep her marginally but somewhat mobile . there aren't a lot of positive options or outcomes when you get that old and frail. she was very undisciplined and lazy even when she was young so I don't imagine much improvement with other locations.

diane sue my sister thinks she needs a total shoulder replacement. she lives alone and will not have any help unless a visiting nurse gets assigned. she cant drive, has no shower, bathroom is upstairs, and on and on. I've been paying close attention to how hard this has been for you on a lesser surgery and with help from husband and family! plus you are in 1000% better shape than my sister. she has no internet so I sent her a description of the surgery so I hope she reads it and drops the idea.

Valerie-That is surprising about Lowes. I agree, it's very sloppy for them to do it like that. Home Depot seems to do a better job, at least at my store. They keep very close track of the mulch and soils and always look at receipts and offer loading assistance.

Judy I thought last year when this happened it was kind of a fluke. there were employees around but we loaded by ourselves anyway, and nobody checked anything. I think last time someone had to open a gate for us. this time nothing was even locked up! its like big pallets of stuff are just out there to be taken. we have a big truck, DH can hand mulch bags to me if I'm in the back of the truck. we would probably skip the help even if it was offered, but wow. Lowes checks carefully when you go in and out their drive-in lumber yard. no clue why the garden area is so sloppy. now the garden center is not really operating at full strength yet, but we start early before things get hectic. I'm proud I can still heft those bags up and down but its still a terrible business practice.

we use the HD sometimes too, but not usually for garden supplies. its a longer drive and unpleasant traffic.

This morning I did RWH Low Impact HiiT One for 28 minutes and 207 calories burned. My average heart rate was 138 and maximum heart rate was 161. I made a quick trip to the store to get salad ingredients and a few other items. We are getting more rain starting today, so I wanted to get that done early. I also stopped for gasoline which was 5.049 per gallon.

Cathy, great job with your last chest, shoulders, and triceps workout for Meso 2. I’m sorry about your mom. It’s so hard to watch loved ones go through that. I do have the original Bootcamp, but I don’t care for it and tend to avoid it.

Valerie, ICE Bootcamp uses the step for cardio so you might have decided against using it. The cardio could easily be done on the floor.

Judy, nice job getting in a ride when you are so busy at work.

Hello to Diane Sue.

Today I did ICE Chiseled Lower Body, Muscle Meltdown Shoulders and Icy Core 2. I'm off again tomorrow then back to work on Thursday.

Carolyn-Great job with RWH Low Impact HiiT One. Gas is close to $5 a gallon here too. I'm with you on the original Bootcamp. I love the Muscle Endurance workout but I didn't care for the Bootcamp one.

Valerie-That's great that you can still lift bags of mulch. I'm proud of being able to lift bags of soil and mulch too. I don't think anyone is buying mulch here yet but probably by next weekend if the weather continues to improve.

Hi to Cathy & Diane Sue

If I can brag a little, I bought 2 costco size bags of Miracle Grow planting mix. I got them off the stack and onto my cart, and then off the cart and into the trunk. they are heavy and floppy so hard to handle. they are almost always wet on the outside too that makes the outer wrap sticky too. its hard to move them and not get them caught on corners of the cart .

Did Boxing Hiit Express this morning! Over 50 today and tomorrow we are supposed to be near 70! Looking forward to getting some fresh air in the house.

My grandmothers were total opposites of each other though both stayed in their homes until the last year or two of their lives. My Mom's mother had dementia and the last year or so had pretty much no short term memory, so you spent your whole visit answering the same few questions over and over. She was 98 when she passed away. My Dad's mother was still quite sharp when she fell at 95 and ended up in a nursing home. When she finally realized that she wasn't going to get to go home she basically starved herself to death because she could reconcile herself to that.

Valerie it really is crazy how easy it would be for someone to walk away with garden stuff there. The only heavy thing I buy is bird seed and I can manage the 40 lb bags as long as I put them on the cart and not on the bottom. I put one up on the seat area and if I need a second, I can lay in kitty corner on the opposite end and then stuff my groceries down in the cart between them. Not the easiest thing to maneuver around the store and I do get a comments. LOL

I never saw gas higher than $4.39 and the closest place to me is down to $4.09.

No workout. I did PT yesterday and again today. We are starting to get into full range on my arm in close to my head and straight over my head. Yesterday he had me do some reverse grip pullover type work with arms straight and a weight bar. He did not have me do that one today. I was glad as yesterday day I did a lot of intense overhead work. My scapula and lats are sore! We talked today about my workouts and what I do. He said I could probably do child pose with arms extended. He said if I pull my arm across in front of me to get a bit of stretch in the back, I should go up a little high or do it low as straight across causes some difficulty with a group of ligaments at that level. I told him I am not doing any moves that we are not already in the range we are working. I wish I had opportunity for some more workouts. I had Walmart deliver groceries and they were here 10 minutes after I got home from PT. I have doctor app with cardiovascular tomorrow and Thursday is PT again. Friday I thought I would be able to, but we have a large tv cabinet coming in the morning and afternoon I am going with my husband to a meeting. Maybe Saturday I can do something. When I was leaving my PT mentioned how active I seem to have been and getting back to it soon. He was encouraging.

Valerie, I do not know how your sister could manage that kind of surgery without someone there 24 hours a day. I had a hard time getting up and down as I could not use the arm to push off and could not put pressure on it. Going to the bathroom was work and the toilet paper roll was on the right side which I could not use the arm for and reaching across with left hurt. I finally sit it on the bath counter by the toilet. I could not reach the faucet with hand to wash it. I had to get a rag or water to wash with the left. Too many things you take for granted till you have one arm that is pretty much useless and the pain is near unbearable. A full replacement would be rough.

Hi to all of you. I will come back later to finish. I need to get some sleep as my cardiovascular job is a long way from home. I will leave an hour before time.

This morning I did Stacked Sets Lower Body, premix #4. That included segments 1A, 1B, and 2B. My time was 31 minutes with 177 calories burned, average heart rate 125, and maximum heart rate 145.

Judy, great job with ICE Chiseled Lower Body, Muscle Meltdown Shoulders, and Icy Core 2. Having a day off will be a nice break.

Valerie, you are able to do that heavy lifting for garden supplies because of your hard work. You are seeing the functional benefits! Great job.

Cathy, great job with Boxing HiiT Express.

Diane Sue, you are making great progress with PT and your recovery. Congratulations.

diane sue thank you for the info. hoping when my sister reads the description I sent her, she will let things stand as is. no doubt she needs surgery. she's had both shoulders surgically fixed before. rotator cuff repair? she falls because she has unexpected seizures. that will not change. stress amps up the likelihood of a seizure. there is zero chance anyone will stay with her. her son cut off all contact, her daughter lives in texas. If she does this, she will end up in a nursing home facility for weeks afterward. much of her plumbing doesn't work. only the upstairs toilet flushes. she has a tub . the shower doesn't work. no way can she get in and out of the tub without help.
very useful about the toilet paper roll! one of those things you don't think of until afterwards when you realize you can't do something. I don't see how she can keep her surgery site clean in her limited situation. I'm not sure if its her right or left shoulder. she can't get groceries delivered, has no internet to order. it is impossible to teach her anything. If she had sold the house, gone to senior housing, maybe this would be manageable but I don't see a way here at all. no one would stay in that house with her.

sounds like you are progressing well but it sounds very hard. you are not a wimp. rehab is challenging.

cathy I cant get the miracle grow dirt over the top of the cart. it has to go on the bottom. I put two bags there and then wiggle them out when I get to the car. I can lift them into the tailgate, a food lower than the cart. carefully. I think its core strength more than anything. its hard, that is my upper limit.

we tried skiing this morning but didnt work out. ended up hiking for 40 minutes but never got to the snow line.

My knee was a bit iffy this morning, after being okay for a long time. Didn't want to push it, so I switched and did back and biceps today and I'll do legs Friday. It feels almost normal now and I'm not sure what caused it. Nice day here today! Went out and walked. Still have 3 paths that are water logged in the last section, but I was able to do them with boots on straddling the middle of staying to one side.

Diane Sue you are making great progress and I'm sure all your activity pre surgery was a plus to your recovery.

Carolyn great job with Stacked Sets Lower Body!

Valerie sorry skiing didn't work out. Great that you were able to get a hike in! My lower back doesn't like lifting heavy weight from near floor level. Much better when I can grab something at waist or chest height.

Shopping tomorrow so I won't get a workout in. Was glad to see they pushed the rain till Friday as shopping in the rain is never a plus and the temp is supposed to be mid 60's. And it's not going below 40 tonight so I can ditch the winter coat and at most need a jacket.
