Cathlete
good morning.
I hate shopping today.. but will. duct tape fix on my jacket is holding OK but other seams must be close to failing too. no warning, suddenly the seal gives and fabric is flapping. I found a jacket online from last season that might be what I want in a decent color. not that fussy about color, but not white, black, or yellow/green/ brown cow flop color. I can't comfortably wait longer. we are back to winter this week with snow and rain and that's when I need a decent jacket the most. so off to the outlet mall.

Did anyone watch the Olympics? we watched bits and pieces. it has developed into so many events and categories, it's less interesting for us now. some competitions are absolutely supreme athletic events ... I dont want to sound critical of the athletes... but too tedious to actually watch. x-c skiing. bobsled. luge. biathalon. so many ski, snowboard, skating categories now I can't keep them straight.

Hello Ladies. Today is my rest day and I didn’t even do yoga this morning. I‘m having a slow lazy day. Valerie, good luck with your shopping. I hate weekend shopping now that I have retired. For too many years it was the only time available. I didn’t watch any of the Olympics this year.

Have a great day everyone.

Success!. I hate shopping... especially weekends AND at an outlet mall we were in/out in less than 30 min. I did my research, knew what I wanted. tried things on, avoiding the "order, try, return" cycle so common with online ordering. beautiful blue color. expensive, but not crazy ridiculous. it has pit zips which I was not counting on but it fit best. Hiking in wet brush or rain allows extra venting opening zippered areas under arms to dump heat, a feature useful for hiking or possibly riding and not much else. it's for my birthday in more than a month, but I'm using it right away.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did Cathe Live PHA Super Sets (No repeats) and a Peloton yoga session.

Carolyn-I hope you had a nice rest day. I didn't watch any of the Olympics this year either.

Valerie- we went to REI yesterday to look at some new bike gear. We are determined to get some outside rides in this spring and summer and are trying to plan ahead.

Hi to Cathy & Diane Sue

I was supposed to do kickboxing today, but after my workout yesterday my upper body was like no don't want that! So I ended up doing the IMAX 3 combos instead. Leg day tomorrow.

I avoid shopping on weekends at all cost. Only time I've done it in the last year was last time I was in Marquette and Derek remembered he needed things after we got up there. Was in and out as fast as I could, considering I'm almost completely unfamiliar with that store. Self checkout and back to the car I went.

Valerie glad you found something that works for you.

Judy Great job with PHA Super Sets and yoga!

Carolyn sometimes a rest day is just what's needed.

This morning I did JS Stride and Step, which was 30 minutes and 197 calories burned. My average heart rate was 127 and maximum heart rate was 160. Then I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Evening practice for an additional 28 minutes and 44 calories. The yoga gave me a nice stretch for my hips which is one of the things that I like about it. She holds the lower body poses a little longer.

Valerie, that’s great that you found a new jacket. This was probably a good weekend for shopping for winter wear.

Judy, nice job with Live PHA Supersets and Peloton yoga. I really needed a good yoga session today. It’s easy to overlook that aspect of fitness, but it’s important for me to do some kind of yoga/stretching regularly.

Cathy, great job with your IMAX Combos. Kickboxing the day after an upper body workout can be hard.

Hello hello to Diane Sue.

Now that I have a new jacket I can tear off the duct tape and repair the old one with goretex tape. fine for garden outdoor work, anything where the jacket falling apart spontaneously won't be an issue.
DH was brave to go to the mall. neither of us is a "shopper". outlet mall, holiday weekend, people lined up before opening. not good! extra 10% off for the holiday. it's a "shell" jacket. no insulation. waterproof breathable. wear all year ... hiking skiing, a common mistake is a warm insulated jacket for strenuous activity. you get too warm quickly and sweat, end up damp and cold. a shell jacket is waterproof and windproof and has enough room for layers underneath. you can custom tailor to the temp and the activity. its my go-to jacket. I carry a light puffy for backup and sitting around. I'm convinced most people don't like outdoor activity because they never learned to dress right. end up being uncomfortable all the time. wool as a base layer has gotten popular but I stick to synthetics. my bare skin and merino wool do not get along.
we stopped at home depot, only 5 min apart. HD is a nicer store and better stocked than Lowes.

I did body weight and bands yesterday. I can get myself pretty sore with that one! I have to watch some of the floor moves that target the hip bursitis area. skipping those.

Yesterday I did a 30 minute Peloton ride after work and today I did KCM Cardio Pump workout 2 (strength). I'm only working 12 hours a week for the next few weeks and am looking forward to having some extra workout time. This is a really slow time at HD. It won't pick up again until late March.

Carolyn-Great job with JS Stride & Step and Jane Adams Gentle Yoga. It's really important to do yoga/stretching regularly, I agree. It's helped me stay injury free and has really helped improve my lower back and hip issues.

Valerie-Nice job with Body Weight and Bands. That's another one I need to do again soon.

Cathy-Great job with the IMAX 3 Combos.

Hi to Diane Sue

Judy good luck with getting outdoor rides in. I love outdoor riding. mt biking is popular. there are (maybe) places to ride close by you aren't aware of. we have forest service roads here that sometimes are perfect in the right season. or not! you never know from one year to the next. we find places that are kind of boring to hike are often good for riding. downhill ski areas (out of season) might be good as are x-c areas. businesses have caught on to a profitable use of their terrain after downhill ski season is done. they can groom winding routes or can chairlift people/bikes to the top, then ride down at crazy speeds. that is not for me but cant tell until you look. we had no clue where we would ride in AZ but it was easy to find places. if you rent bikes somewhere, the bike shop will have routes.

Trailforks

not sure I got the site names right but those are the names. there may be other groups in the midwest. both of these have lots of trail information. everything won't be usable. I find both awkward sites to use but some info will be useful especially in a new area. we had some books covering local areas but they are mostly outdated now since this is a fast changing sport. also very subjective how hard routes are. for AZ we knew we had to be close to scottsdale so we looked around PHX area. dozens of places. note how difficult trails are. we found that pretty accurate. we got help from the REI adventure center too mainly because the lady working could list off some places to try.

I did a spin last night for 35 min and sets of push ups and dips.

Today I did Chiseled Upper Body for 43 minutes and 165 calories burned. My average heart rate was 111 and maximum heart rate was 241. We are having a beautiful day in between the days of rain. It’s warm and sunny and feels like an early spring day.

Valerie, great job with Body Weight and Bands. Band workouts are deceptive and can really get deep in the muscles. I always feel it afterwards.

Judy, great job with the Peloton ride and KCM’s Cardio Pump. I finally ordered the two new workouts, but they haven’t arrived yet.

Hello to Cathy and Diane Sue.

I could have sworn I posted yesterday but apparently it was a figment of my imagination. Yesterday's workout was definitely not. Disk 14 Legs. That's tri sets plus calf raises. The ones where you end of doing 60 on each side. And as of right now my hamstrings, glutes and inner thighs are REALLY sore. Other areas a bit. I didn't sleep well the last couple nights so skipped working out today. Not sure I would have managed anything anyway. Shopping tomorrow in case I leave Thursday to head north. The weather that looked good yesterday, is now really NOT. Ugh Cancelled my reservation because I had to do it 48 hours out. May still end up getting there then, but I can still get a room there or somewhere else without an issue. That area got 10-21" today so Derek had no classes. Fort Worth may be getting ice again in a couple days, so TCU may end up closed, too. Fortunately this time, Nick works later in the day and it'll be in the upper 30's by then. Plus he works at the closer hospital.

Carolyn nice job with JS Stride and Step, yoga and Chiseled Upper Body!

Valerie great job with Body Weight and Bands, spin, pushups and dips!

Judy great job with the peloton ride and KCM Cardio Pump!

Valerie-Thanks for the trail links. That's very helpful. There probably are a few areas close by that we aren't aware of. Nice job with the spinning, pushups and dips.

Carolyn-Great job with Chiseled Upper Body. I hope you get the new workouts soon.

Cathy-Great job with STS Legs. I really like tri set leg workouts, but I haven't done the STS one in years. I bet you are sore! Sorry about the sleep and the weather.

Judy we have found some nice spots but also not so great places. vary all over the map! a resource to check and see if there is useful info about the area you want to ride at. as usual, week days are preferable to weekends.

I used to do cathe leg workouts. not anymore. I get enough leg work and hers get me too sore especially my knees. legs along with other parts like total body workouts are ok yet. hope to xc ski tomorrow or at least give it a try. Wa is not as good as MT for that.

Today I did CDorner Cardio to the Beat Low Impact without doing arm moves. This worked to get a few steps and calories. 42 minutes, heart rate 115/128, 181 calories, 4,075 steps. I kept it all low impact. I also did some V sits to work the abs a bit without supporting with my arms. PT went well yesterday. I managed to ice a lot and soaked in a mineral bath, rolled the knots that were trying to take over (PT said that was a good thing to do as my traps and neck keep getting inflamed) He says everything has to relearn after lack of use and wearing the immobilizer so long. I think the therapist did not push quite as hard this time after telling him about the spasms and pain. Not that it did not still hurt though. He asked if I was okay. I can reach a bit further and we are working to get my arm up a bit further in back. I canceled going tomorrow as it is supposed to be sleeting and snowing right at peak chances when I was supposed to go. Hopefully I can go Friday morning. My surgeon said I could ride the spin bike as long as I was not putting pressure on the arms. Then he said to talk to the PT about what I can do. So, I am going to try and get a bit of cardio back in. Working on getting my blood pressure back down as well. All of the meds and I suppose pain etc. had had it high and I have my appointment for the ultrasound and visit with my cardiologist next month. I am not wanting him to off up meds.
Not much to report. I am getting around more and started driving last week so I do not have to rely on others to take me places.

Diane sue, Is this your first post back? Congrats on getting thru the surgery and getting on the long road thru rehab. A little bit at a time and a lot of long careful work!! It sounds challenging to say the least. Shoulders are so important in doing just about everything. Sounds like a long road back

Today I did Low Impact Sweat workout one for 28 minutes and 186 calories burned. My average heart rate was 132 and maximum heart rate was 175.

Diane Sue, it’s great to hear from you. Sounds like your recovery is going well. I’m sure that it’s frustrating for you to have these limitations since you are usually so active, but it does take time. Being able to drive yourself is wonderful. Nice job with CDorner Cardio to the Beat Low Impact using your own modifications.

Cathy, nice work with STS disc 14 Legs. Cathe’s Leg workouts can be tough, especially those in STS.

Hello to Judy and Valerie.

No workout yesterday as I shopped and was busy organizing to head north today. Eating an early lunch and heading for Mackinaw City. That gets me ahead of the snow we are getting downstate tonight. Then I'll go on to Marquette. The Upper Peninsula got dumped on. National Weather service station in Negaunee not far from Marquette had 37.1" in 54 hours and set a one day record of 21.6". There are cars stuck and buried all over, including campus. Told Derek to be glad he didn't have a car. Giving them another day to plow, though it looks like the highways I'd use up there are okay. Note those highways are two lane except where they put passing lanes in.

Today I got up and did Disk 15 Back and Biceps. Drop sets. Going to have to adjust my days for STS. Next one will have to be Sunday instead of Saturday. Hoping to do cardio the next two mornings, but that is contingent upon the space in my rooms.

The crazy Sandhill Cranes are back. At least the early birds are, and probably regretting their decision. We had a lot of fields flooding from our rain earlier in the week, but they then froze over. So the cranes can't stand and sleeping shallow water to deter predators. There's about a dozen that spent the night in the fields I can see, and before I went to bed last night they were carrying. Something was messing with them. Probably raccoons. They are probably 1/4 mile from me or a bit more and so loud! They were gone barely over 2 months.

Diane Sue great that you are back posting and getting back to cardio workouts! Sounds like PT is rough, but it'll be so worth having put energy into.

Valerie I hope you were able to xc ski.

Hi Judy!

This morning I did KCM’s Power Splits, workout one, Lower Body. My time was 34 minutes with 185 calories burned. Average heart rate was 122 and maximum heart rate was 143. I finished up with the Extended Stretch from Perfect Pump. The new KCM workouts arrived just after I posted on Tuesday.

Cathy, great job with STS disc 15, Back and Biceps. Are you going up to pick up your son?

Hello to Judy, Diane Sue, and Valerie.

we got to ski yesterday. it had its good points and not so good ones. sunny and cold. we did an hour of chain saw work to get rid of downed trees. mid size trees leaned over across the road. can't drive past unless you cut and roll the chunks out of the way. the snow was mixed.... some very nice and some pretty awful and icy. went up for an hour and a half and then down. I lost a ski on the way down. it slid on the ice off the road over a steep bank. took me a while just to find it in the downed trees and brushy debris. DH climbed down to get it and tossed it back uphill to me. that was a catch I didn't want to miss. I was crawling under hanging tree branches, ski started sliding downhill. I could not catch it before it went over the edge. lucky I was able to find it at all. xc skis dont have the ski stopping devices that downhill skis have.

I love sand hills! quite a few in MT, usually first in mid march in the places we've been. been really cold in the minus numbers. no melt water ponds for them. yes, they are loud! I had no idea they spent time in northern MI. there are ponds near our house in spring so we can hear them but not annoying loud.

Had good roads all the way to the straits and hoping for the same tomorrow. Yes, Carolyn going to pick up my son for break. Michigan has a lot of Sandhill Cranes. We are near one of the two major migration stopping points here and we get thousands of them feeding in the fields in our area. They are in bigger flocks in the fall and some years there are crazy numbers of them in the air. They'll stick around for awhile in the spring, but then they will disperse all over the state and some probably go on up to Canada.

Valerie sounds like your skiing yesterday had added adventure to it. Glad you got your ski back! My sister warned me when we were hiking in NC, that some people there carry machete's to clear paths, but everywhere we went were well used, popular places.

Carolyn great job with Power Splits Lower Body workout and extended stretch. I think I have room to do cardio in the morning, just not something that requires a lot of space. Don't need to leave until check out at 11:00 or I'll get to Marquette to soon to get into my hotel there. And the only downer of the trip has been that I got out at the first rest area and realized, my boots are sitting in my laundry room. :( I had meant to wear them and just use my workout shoes for indoors. So, no hiking tomorrow, though given the amount of snow they have guessing trails won't be open to anyone trying to walk. I've seen pics of people up to their thighs in snow! There's always next weekend.
