Pentagenarians & Beyond 2/13

Good morning. Valerie, thanks for starting the thread before leaving on your trip. Today I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice for 18 minutes.

Hello to everyone and have a wonderful day.

Yesterday I did Cardio Challenge Express. I hadn't noticed that in my searches before. Not a hiit workout, but it moves along very rapidly with brief breaks. Uses 3 lb weights and a stability ball and is just over 30 minutes. Packs a lot in and a fun change. Since it's my rest week, I just did some stretching this morning.

Carolyn nice job with the yoga!

Valerie great job with Body Weight and Bands! I hope you have a smooth day of traveling.

travel was decent, dry and sunny, but a long day. all ok when we arrived but still 10.5 hours of straight thru driving and then unloading everything. I bring dinner ready to go so I need minimal cooking skills. this morning we had the huge local elk herd all over around our house. we haven't been here since november and our closest two neighbors aren't here either. it's been a quiet area for elk all winter, and they hang out where they aren't disturbed. they graze and stroll 10 feet from our house. too dark for pictures then. by the time it's getting light they move into lower areas where they aren't visible. weather forecast isnt great with snow and wind but not thrilled with anything strenuous today. I need to acclimate a little! I notice altitude much more than DH. dont plan to lie around but not up to xc ski today either.

Hello Ladies. This morning I did Rev’d Up Rumble for 41 minutes and 299 calories burned. My average heart rate was 132 and maximum heart rate was 157.

Cathy, nice job with Cardio Challenge Express.

Valerie, I’m glad that you had an uneventful trip. The elk herd around your house sounds like a wonderful sightIng!

Waving hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday was a rest day and today I did 85 minutes of Peloton rides, the first half at a harder pace and the last half as a recovery ride.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice and Rev'd Up Rumble.

Valerie-Nice job with Body Weight and Bands. I'm glad you had a good trip. You probably mentioned it before but what is the altitude there? I definitely noticed it when we were in Colorado and I didn't really get a chance to get acclimated.

Cathy-Nice job with Cardio Challenge Express. I'll have to look that one up, I don't think I've done it. Enjoy your rest week!

Hi to Diane Sue!

nothing worked as planned this morning but we hiked for an hour and a half after driving around in the park a little. had to connect with some people via phone calls. the cell service in the north section of the park is barely there.
judy we are in the valley at our house elevation is 5300 feet. everything is up from here. elevation in the park varies....... where we were today was 6300. a lot of colorado is much much higher. I remember breckenridge and being so out of breath but I think it was 9000-10000 feet. most people would notice that.

when we got up this morning it was still dark. as it got a tiny bit light, we realized we had a herd of elk all around our house. hundreds of them. they spread out and when you ythink you have a head count, suddenly another group will show up. it was too dark to take pictures but some were no more than 10 feet away. we tiptoed around in the dark and peeked around edges of blinds so we didnt scare them off. as it got lighter we could see more and more. they all move together, so if something scares one, they will all gallop off. we see them here from late fall into spring but not usually so close. there is always evidence they have been here. footprints, poop, etc but this was the best!.

Today I did PHA 2, a timesaver that omits segment 2A. My time was 42 minutes with 248 calories burned. Average heart rate was 126 and maximum heart rate was 150. The smoke detector was chirping with the low battery warning throughout my workout which drove me crazy! Afterwards I got the ladder and we were able to replace it.

Judy, great job with 85 minutes of Peloton rides. I’m still trying to decide if I want to order Kelly’s newest workouts. I have so many of hers that I rarely us, but I like to mix her in periodically. She posted a short video on Facebook with the correct way to do basic punches, including good explanations. I picked up a couple of form pointers/reminders.

Valerie, nice job getting in a hike yesterday.

Hello to Cathy and Diane Sue.

Carolyn-Great job with PHA 2, that's my favorite PHA workout. I really like Kelly's new workouts and I feel like I will get a lot of use out of them, I am like you with Kelly's workouts, I like to mix her workouts in periodically but I've never her workouts for an extended period of time, really. I saw the Facebook video and thought it was good.

Valerie-Nice hike! We were in Colorado Springs, so about 6,000 feet. We were only there for a couple of days. I didn't feel sick but I didn't feel like I could have worked out hard. Twenty years ago I went to Switzerland with a group of friends and we went to the "Top of Europe", Jungfraujoch. It's around 11,000 feet and I definitely felt that! I remember being light headed and feeling so out of breath.

Hi to Cathy & Diane Sue

we xc skied today. final elevation was 7990 feet. it ended up cold windy and snowing lightly. we skied for a total of 3 hours. then the seams on my jacket fell apart. it's goretex so not stitched together , but taped. it's old and needs replacing but I was waiting for new season arrivals. so we duct taped it. duct tape works for almost everything. might get a new jacket sooner than planned. I was looking before this trip and its still mostly leftovers from last year and I'm a common size, medium or large depending on brand. marginal colors and sizes left over from last year. I would love to be an extra small, never need to pay full price for anything. we want to ski again tomorrow but not sure. today was long and coming back down was as much work as going up due to the snow. we saw 3 huge bull elk still with huge racks of antlers and a lot of bison.

just that's amazing you can ride that long. 85 minutes! wow.

judy there are meds you can use to help the transition. a lot of people fly to destinations and dont get to acclimate. I use one calleed Diamox. it is rx only. I only use a small dose for 2 or 3 days, and it helps me a lot. DH sometimes uses it but he gets skin sensitivity from it, while I dont. I take the first day off but didn't this time. today was day 2 and it felt decent today though it will improve for every day for a week to 2 weeks. exercising helps adjust.

Playing catch up! Yesterday I did Cardio Hiit Plus Core. Another one I'd never done and I will say that it's definitely a good workout and left me a sweaty mess, but I didn't love the mix of exercises. Then today I went shopping because we're getting snow again on Thursday. It's a good thing this is my rest week, because I'm getting plenty. Had an appointment for tomorrow morning to get a part changed in my car for a recall. Called this afternoon and not only don't they have the part, it was never ordered. Ugh Then less than an hour later I got a call that my tires are in, so I'll still be heading to Battle Creek in the morning, just a different place.

Valerie that is so cool about all the elk around your house! Fantastic that you are getting in good hikes and skiing. Why is it when clothes, shoes die it's never when it's a good time to replace them.

Carolyn great job with Rev’d Up Rumble and PHA 2!

Judy nice job with the Peloton rides!

cathy it was ridiculous to see this jacket suddenly regress to disconnected pieces of fabric. its a lovely blue color. always loved it. the long strips of duct tape actually blend in pretty well. the first failure was early this winter but I couldnt find a jacket I liked in my size to try on and decided then to patch it up and wait for spring. this kind of jacket is expensive so I wanted to try in person, not take my chances online. I dont wear it for cycling. a lighter inexpensive jacket is ok for that.

more supply chain issues... at least your tire arrived. not encouraging to know the part was not even ordered!
I'm reminded again about how much I dislike the Macbook. I read the paper on it. screen jerks, it jumps it is so hard to read smoothly. I tried the touch pad, now use a mouse. neither is good. I cant imagine reading a book on this thing.
carolyn we are watching a series, 'Trust". about the Getty kidnapping. it is excellent. a limited series not sure how many episodes, maybe 12. one season. very well done! its from a couple years ago but I never heard of it before stumbling onto it. donald sutherland, hillary swank brendan Fraser. rich people behaving badly but nothing like succession. I think you would like it. Nettflix. want to watch "dont look up" again. movie. I'm slow to pick up sometimes, and I missed a lot the first time before I saw what was going on. lots of big name people in it.

This morning I did JS HiiT Walk from her 30 Day Plan. That was 30 minutes and 241 calories burned. My average heart rate was 141 and maximum heart rate was 166. I did a virtual WW meeting after that, then rushed out for grocery shopping. I also went to Costco.

Valerie, that’s odd that your coat just came apart. I guess it never occurred to me that Goretex was not stitched, not that I have experience with it! I am aware of it only because my son-in-law loves outdoor winter sports, as do my grandchildren. I am really enjoying Succession. My husband has been pulled in as well and we finished season 2 last night. There was a long Covid delay between season 2 and season 3 which just came out a few months ago. I have read about the Getty series and I do think that I might like it. Is the name of it Trust?

Cathy, nice job with Cardio HiiT plus Core. It’s so crazy with the car parts situation. I am beginning to think that the supply chain problems are not going away anytime soon. There are many factors at play, not just the pandemic.

let me bore you with my knowledge about goretex. it works because the pores of the fabric are smaller than a water droplet. water vapor from perspiration, on the other hand, is gaseous and smaller and can exit outward thru the fabric. so, rainwater cannot get in, but perspiration can get out. waterproof and breathable.
lines of stitch holes from being sewn together is a place for water to leak in. doesnt seem important until you are outdoors in constant rain, or against wet brush for hours and hours, or days. most fabrics get soaked. cheap waterproof fabrics are ok for sedentary activities like fishing, but they dont allow perspiration to exit. you get wet from your own sweat. wet is deadly for heat loss no matter how you got wet. goretex (any waterproof, breathable fabric )is a wonderful invention.
used to be constructed with french or false french seams sewn without an external seamline. or the seams were "sealed" with a painted on liquid or tape. it was complicated to make garments with the special seams, and the painted on sealer didnt last. so the last MANY years, the fabric has been joined with goretex tape ironed in place to hold pieces of fabric together. I have a roll. used it to fix jacket hem several years ago. that was easy. the side seams and under arm seams are harder to tape and iron in place. goretex tape is special, cnt just run to Joanne Fabrics and pick some up. When we go home I will fix the latest seam failure. time to replace jacket. no warning, all of a sudden the fabric disconnects from itself. thats all anyone needs to know about goretex.

so far succession is only on hbo max. I hope we can see it eventually, because we saw the first seasons far apart.
carolyn sure you would enjoy Trust. rich people behaving very badly, unbelievable jerks! a smart, complex script and situation with side stories mingled in. great acting. I strongly recommend.

No workout since I was off shrinking my bank count to get new tires. Car definitely rides better and it's quieter. I got ones that are highest rated for winter driving, but not pricey enough to really break the bank. The part my car needs is a recall part. They literally spent a year telling us "your car may do this at high speed..." before they had figured out what to do and manufactured enough parts. The parts are available, not ordering though, ugh. My car in one that you rarely see. In the 3 years I've had it, I've only seen two other ones. It's a Toyota, but is really a Mazda. Don't know how that all happened. Toyota dropped the model the next year, but the current small Mazda is basically identical. The inside looks just like mine.

Gotta say, I know there is a trucker shortage, but dang I had to drive I-94 this morning and you would certainly not know it by the number of semis on that road. It's always bad, but I hit an extra fun time today.

Derek had his interview for a zoo internship this afternoon and he said it went well. Fingers crossed on that!

Carolyn great job with JS Hiit Walk!

This morning I did Lean Legs and Abs. That was 51 minutes and 234 calories burned. Average heart rate was 127 and maximum heart rate was 140. I’m already feeling the effects!

Cathy, I remember that Toyota and Mazda developed some type of partnership a few years ago. They have a plant in Alabama that recently started producing vehicles. Your car must have been one of the first results of that partnership. I hope that your son gets the zoo internship.

Valerie, thanks for the info on goretex. I didn’t know any of that. I thought that I saw that Succession was streaming on Hulu, but I guess I was mistaken.

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

we xc skied for 3.5 hours today and it was lovely. wonderful. cold and windy but great snow. carolyn there is a huge difference between waterproof and water repellant. for day trips its not that critical, but for longer overnight trips you just do NOT want to get wet. I live in a wetter climate where you can get wet from rain or wet from wet brush, but most of the year you will not dry out . it is really important in the mountains.
I'm not totally sure it was HBO max but it a channel we don't get. I will keep watching. maybe the first two seasons were available, but not the latest season? Succession has always been hard to access.

speaking of supply chain, I just read a story about how garage doors and their accessories are in very short supply and causing all kinds of hold ups in home building. probably truck related too. cathy I agree, heavy truck traffic on the interstate here too.

Valerie, it is on HBO and HBO Max. Maybe the earlier seasons were available, maybe available with an additional charge. We are watching it on HBO.

It used to be on something else because we saw two seasons and we never had hbo or hbo max. I don’t remember. We will find it eventually. Thanks for looking.
