Pentagenarians & Beyond: 12/08/2024

This morning was STS Disk 28 Chest and Back.

Shannon I hope your back muscle is feeling better today. I enjoy step, but I get bored doing them the regular way with the whole building up the section, so I've created some combo only ones in the Workout Blender. Cathe hasn't done any step since she had the issue with her eye, and at this point, I don't think we'll be getting anything new. I don't trust our post office out here at all. Several times we've gotten not just other people's mail, but up to 8 pieces of other peoples mail, and a couple months ago we had a reimbursement check from the insurance company that showed out for delivery, but didn't show up for a week! If I need to mail something, I take it with me when I shop and use the PO there. I'm thinking I won't do more than try some of the non weight new workouts till I'm done with STS, as I don't need more weight work. LOL

Carolyn that's quite brisk for you! We are into a brief warmer spell and it's going to be upper 40's for a couple days. Bye bye snow. I know the temptation with produce, and it always results in my fridge turning into a morgue.

Diane Sue I've found that if I'm going to hurt myself it'll be some random every day thing rather than a workout. I hope your ribs are feeling better today. I stopped the foam rolling one after the actual foam rolling as they stand up and start using the foam roller as a workout tool rather than for rolling, so I don't know what comes after.

Valerie that sounds like a pretty challenging remodel you're taking on. I have no eye issues other than needing reading glasses, but I've had the same eye doctor for a bit over 40 years, same doctor for 25 or so and while the dentist is newer at probably less than 10 he and his staff are great about working around my stupid lower jaw not numbing well issue. If I moved out of state, I swear I'd come back twice a year to see him. LOL

Hi Judy.

This particular eye clinic has been around for decades, first the father who I used for most of the time, and now his son ( and other colleagues) who has stepped in. he's been there for years too, so not a "newbie". location is ok. its where I got glasses and contact lenses and eye exams for at least 10 years. that they do cataract surgery is convenient. people who usually see an optometrist need to upgrade which I did around the time I got onto Medicare. DH has different eye issues so he saw an ophthalmologist for longer, same clinic. I have been told that if you transfer records for cataract surgery( and your current clinic does not do it) you will not be welcomed back for routine care. the clinics that do exclusively cataract procedures did not sound convenient for ongoing care. I used an optometrist for eye exams and contact lenses but he retired and medicare pays for exams done by ophthalmologists but not optometrists I believe. not sure about that but I wanted to simplify how many people I need to see.

cathy we are doing the prep work ourselves but hired contractors for the rest. it saves a little money and DH likes to do this work. we need one group for wall and floor tile, a plumber, and a granite counter person. weve had to switch dentists when our previous guy retired.
I didn't get sore from the upper body things I did so will plan on doing the whole workout later today. Ive never been able to do step at all( no amount of coaching and movement breakdown helps) so glad that was not a part of this.

Good afternoon. This morning I did yoga/mobility for 18 minutes. I put up the small Christmas tree in the entry way this morning. Having decorations up gets me on the Christmas mood, but I don’t want the main tree up yet.

Diane Sue, great job with LMR Core Fusion + Core Fusion level 2 and the foam rolling.

Valerie, nice job with 15 minutes of spinning and part of LMR Upper Body.

No workout today. I went to church to see the Christmas Cantata. The music and narrative were great. I may do some stretching or yoga tonight. It depends on how quickly I get housework done. My husband is off the next few days and we have things to do. I have the ladies group Christmas gift exchange to go to Tuesday. My abs are sore from the LMR core work that I did.

Cathy, nice work on STS Disk 28 chest and back. I did not know Cathe had an eye issue. Was that around the time she did Step Boss?
Our last house was the worst with postal issues. Plus we had a community mailbox. A couple of times there was not room in the package boxes so rather than take them to someone's doorstep they just set the box on top of the community mailboxes in the open. They also, I am guessing did not want to deliver a bunch of advertisement cards and dumped a huge pile of them into my box. They were always delivering to the wrong people. They were impossible to contact. I got the run around and all plead they were not responsible, someone else was. We have got someone elses mail or they got ours here a few times.

Carolyn, nice that you got in yoga this morning. We have only decorated outside so far. I pulled out a few ornamental things yesterday. No tree yet. We decorated our pine tree in the front yard though.

Valerie, whenever I need to get my cataracts taken care of I will go to the eye doctor that did my upper lids to get rid of eye obstruction. He would still be my eyecare person, but is some distance away and I won't drive from there with dialated eyes. My new doctor does something else which costs extra or I can get a lighter dilation. I pay the extra. My brother had his first knee replacement 2 years ago and that went well, he got the other done last month and had to go back in because his knee was so swollen and they needed to go back in and drain it and replace another part. He has MRSA . It was rougher too because he has AFIB and they had to monitor that when doing surgery. I keep checking on him because he has no family there in Florida and his wife passed away last Thanksgiving.
Mine have issues and the doctor says I "probably" am losing cartilage. Really, this arthritis doctor does not check much, he just pronounces his thoughts. I told him it pops out of place. Oddly it is when I am doing yoga or something and getting up off the floor.

Hi to Judy and Shannon

Its not perfect but our mail delivery is generally decent. we occasionally get a wrong address piece but when we have a regular delivery person, it's usually accurate. mail theft unfortunately commonplace around here. sometimes the thieves take the entire blue box. I never use the outside drop boxes anymore and only mail things by walking inside the PO. like most people, we dont get anywhere near the mail we used to get. we pay most bills electronically on autopay. we have a locking box at the top of our driveway. didnt do that workout as planned, but finished the bathroom tearout and went to the dump with a truckoad of old tile and drywall plus yard debris so that was enough of a workout. also did therapy work.

Good morning, everyone. Yesterday I did the functional upper and lower body DVDs again, playing around with a few things, especially on the upper body. I want to find a way to use them both, but probably skip some chapters so the workout won’t be so incredibly long, because I sure could use another total body workout, in addition to the Total one she includes. I just really don’t like splits. I don’t usually do a structured workout on Sunday. But I am having a toenail removed today, so I won’t be able to exercise this afternoon. Stupid toenail. I had it “permanently” removed last year, treated with acid to supposedly kill the root, but it grew back.

Let’s see, since we have a conversation going about makeup and sunscreen … I haven’t worn makeup since college, a very long time ago, LOL. I used to wear contacts, and bits of mascara would flake off and irritate my eyes, and then I’d rub all my makeup off trying to get it out. Much easier and more comfortable just to do away with it. I’ve never been very good about wearing sunscreen until the past few years. I developed photomorphic light eruption (PMLE), otherwise known as a sun allergy. I’d break out into itchy bumps when I got into the sun, even in winter. I had to start wearing long sleeves in summer – not fun down here in Arkansas! But I just sweat the sunscreen off too fast. I suspect but can’t prove that it was a weird side effect of menopause. It’s not as bad now. But I still have to wear it on my face, or my nose gets ugly red blotches. Probably more info than anybody wants to know, LOL.

Carolyn – What sort of produce is still available this time of the year? I hope you enjoyed your rest day. I don’t put out many decorations, mostly just a nice Nativity. But I really enjoy it while it’s out. Sometimes I think I should leave it out all year.

Diane – thanks for the info about Pilates. I remember PiYo. I considered it, but I remember thinking much of what you described – that the positions were uncomfortable and too much in plank. I remember Cathe’s eye issue. She tore her retina and had to lie face down on her couch for days. I can’t even imagine dealing with that. I’d go crazy. I hope you and your husband enjoy your time together and get lots accomplished.

Valerie – I was surprised about the upper body workout too. Much harder than it looks. I’ve never heard of sun gloves. Interesting. I used to get a lot of PMLE on my hands. Wish I’d known about them then!

Cathy – Thank you, yes, my back muscle is all better. I was able to do upper body without a twinge. I’ve noticed how you create your own step workouts. Very cool! I’ve thought it odd how Cathe never puts out any sort of cardio DVD anymore, just weights. I’ve wondered if it’s an age thing for her. If so, well, it’s something of a comfort to know she is aging too!

Hello to Judy!

This morning I did Low Impact Sweat 2 and the Floor Yoga Premix from the new workout. I'm wondering how much I'll actually need my yoga blocks since I didn't need them for that.

Valerie it's good that you can do part of the work yourselves. I did some stuff when I sold my house in '97. Tore out the carpet, even did wallpaper in a couple rooms which I vowed never to do again. LOL And lots of painting. Even hung a couple of interior doors. Since then I've done nothing but some painting, I'm not good don't hire me! and wallpaper borders years ago. Unless I'm getting a package, I rarely get relevant mail. We do pretty much everything online, too.

Carolyn with everything going on with Derek's move, I keep forgetting Christmas is coming. We'll probably put up our tree this weekend. He's gone up to visit his fiancé for a week, and will only be home one full day before leaving, so we'll do Christmas with him then.

Diane Sue I'm glad you enjoyed the music. A few years back, Cathe had a detached retina, the info is somewhere on the site. She had to have emergency surgery and was off for awhile. At one point, she said because it had messed with her depth perception that step was out. I don't know if that's still true, or if she's just opting not to do it.

Shannon I'm glad your muscle is fine now. Even with the lives Cathe doesn't do much cardio. In the last few months, she's done a couple of kickboxing workouts, but mostly a combo of weights, core and stretching. I love to use the Workout Blender to create things. Weird thing though. My password stopped working for my laptop, which is a problem because it's the only way you can create new workouts. But, it the Roku is still working fine for OnDemand and Live, but I can't sign in on my laptop, or phone. So, I'm going to have to suck it up and get a new password and then I'll have to sign in again to both things on the Roku. I just don't get how one still works and the others don't.

Hi Judy.

Today I did JS 15 Minute Calorie Burst, 15 minutes, 120 calories, average heart rate 139 and my heart rate 157. Then I did LMR Functional Core Fusion timesaver. That was 21 minutes and 88 calories.

Diane Sue, I’m sure that the Christmas Cantata was great. I’m impressed that you did the full Functional Core+Bonus!

Valerie, the bathroom tear out sounds like a functional workout to me.

Shannon, nice job with Functional Upper and Lower Body. I’m sure that you will find the mix that works for you. The Farmer’s Market is open year round. They have the usual fall produce like cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, different varieties of winter squash, cabbage, collards, turnips, and different varieties of lettuce just to name a few. I always get kale, arugula, lettuce, then add whatever I want to cook during the week. They also have apples from North Georgia.

Cathy, great job with Low Impact Sweat 2 and Floor Yoga. I’m getting more in the Christmas spirit now that I know that my other two daughters will be here. I thought it might be just the two of us. Youngest daughter had to wait for her latest scan results to see if she would need to change her chemotherapy schedule. That worked out and oldest daughter adjusted her work schedule.

Hello to Judy.

We intended to xc ski this morning but did the drive and snow was way less than expected, icy and driven on. I didnt ( barely anyway) ski or snowshoe last year due to the big surgery. I was nervous about even going. will try again after there's more snow. it forced us to locate all the gear, load it, and think we might ski so that alone is useful.

Shannon make up is a reason to keep my hands off my face. a massive help in avoiding upper respiratory infections, eye infections. it kills me to skip mascara on one eye this week! havent had a URI in a LONG time ( like 10 years?) even when DH has gotten one. I credit washing/sanitizing and not touching my hands to my face. I got the sun gloves from OR, Oregon Research. they are very light but sun blocking. we got them for our trip to the desert SW early this year. the backs of hands really get fried. at the time I could not find a cheaper knock off version on Amazon. they're like short finger bike gloves without the padding. hands lose sunscreen fast so these worked out well for us. the couple we hiked with had them already. I they were $20-30 but thats cheap compared to skin cancer. one friend just hand MOHs surgery on his nose due to cancer so its preventive on another vulnerable area. I dont like the feel of sunscreen but I use a combo of it plus hats and sleeves. Ive had two small skin cancers. a huge PITA. we've always done hiking, skiing, etc on snow so even winter its needed. I dont like it but I didnt like surgery either.
this is them expensive for what they are but comfy in the heat and block the sun, weigh almost nothing. the fabric is light but tough.

I'm going to totally guess here that Cathe wore contact lenses before her retinal detachment but doesnt anymore. I never could wear glasses. it messed up depth perception. couldn't walk. contacts ( for me) dodge that completely. it was the first sensation when I got glasses. I never got over it. I could wear glasses for TV but not up and moving. especially going down stairs. impossible with glasses. all done with that! contacts didnt help with step , still cant do that.

Cathy we do that kind of thing ourselves. we will paint the room first and get countertop measures by a contractor tomorrow. plumber coming Wed to see what he needs to do. we picked out a tub and faucet/sink/lighting. still will take a while to get done with the holidays in there. no rush,I use the room to pee at night but its a very outdated room.

we rode the mt bikes around the neighborhood for 45 min this afternoon after another computer problem this time with norton.

Today I did CDorner cardio workout from 4 days ago, 45 min, 273 calories, heart rate 148/179(the highest I saw on my watch was 63 so not sure about the 179 as I was not working that hard), 6,169 steps. Something tells me all of the rebooting and connecting devises when I changed my scale batterie and had to adjust and do again, changed up readings. I followed with LMR Functional Yoga Fusion timesaver floor which does include the warmup, 25 minutes, 42 calories. 70 minutes, 315 calories. After that I did the back pod and started watching the pilates DVD. I really like this as it is pretty much just a mobility type workout using the foam roller. No planks. I did through the spinal decompression and stopped there. I checked the workout manager, and I just missed 3 moves. I will be doing this more.

Valerie, sorry there was not enough snow. At least it was a step toward getting through the anxiety getting started again.

Carolyn, nice work on JS 15 minute calorie burst and LMR timesaver core today. I was surprised that the full core workout did not bother my ribs. My ab muscles were sore, but that feels much different than the ribs hurting/

Shannon, maybe you could use timesavers from the workouts and put them together for a full body workout. I always explore the timesavers :) As posted above the Pilates is functional and no moves through planks and up and down stuff. It is more like what I have been doing with mobility through Youtube Ana Pilates PA. I have the PIYO series and Beach Body Hammer and Chisel has a killer pilates workout as well as one of the P90X workouts. I think number 3. They all make me wary of pilates workouts.

Cathy, I think maybe the bonus restore yoga you would need the yoga blocks. Good job on Low Impact 2 and Yoga floor work today. I wonder how I missed Cathe's eye troubles. I must have had something else going on.

This morning I did a 45-minute Peloton ride. I had my PT appointment this afternoon. The therapist did a short exam and gave me a few stretches to do at home. This was a much shorter appointment than when I went in for my shoulder (that was a different office, one no longer covered by our insurance). To be honest, I wasn’t very impressed. The therapist was ok but the office seemed kind of disorganized and chaotic. They wanted me to schedule PT appointments twice a week for the next 4 weeks but I don’t really think it would be any better for me than just doing PT at home on my own and going to a massage therapist every week or so.

Cathy-Great job with STS Disk 28 Chest and Back, Low Impact Sweat 2 and the Yoga Premix. I remember when Cathe had her detached retina, it was in 2021. I remember because a co-worked of mine had something similar going on at the same time.

Valerie-Great job with your mountain bike ride, therapy work and the bathroom tear out. That was definitely a workout.

Carolyn-Great job with yoga/mobility, JS 15 Minute Calorie Burst and LMR Functional Core Fusion timesaver.
That's great that your daughters will be there for Christmas.

Diane Sue-Great job with the CDorner cardio workout, LMR Functional Yoga Fusion timesaver floor and the back pod. The Christmas Cantata sounds wonderful.

Shannon-Great job with Functional Upper and Lower Body. I hadn’t really thought about it but you are right, Cathe doesn’t really put out cardio workouts like she used to.

Good morning, ladies. The toenail is gone – again. Hopefully it will stay gone this time. The doc gave me an extra dose of the acid, I think. He apologized and didn’t charge for the procedure. He said he wasn’t aggressive enough with the acid last year. I did some floor stretches last night. I’ll probably do something gentle again tonight, but then it should be fine to exercise again.

Cathy – Low Impact Sweat is a good one. Maybe I’ll try the floor yoga premix too – might be a good idea to stay on the floor one more day. I’m with you on the yoga blocks. Honestly, the only thing I use them for are for elevated lunges because I don’t have a step. It’s interesting to think about how Cathe’s workouts have changed over the years. She used to be really into cardio, but she’s gradually changed her focus to weights. I think you can tell it in her physique, too. I hope you get the password issue fixed so you can keep on creating in the Blender!

Carolyn – What did you think of the Functional Core timesaver? The farmer’s market sounds fabulous! I’ve never had truly fresh produce for any of those veggies, just stuff at the store. I’m sure there’s a huge difference.

Valerie – I hate it that you felt nervous about XC skiing. You are such an amazing outdoors person! I’ve never skied in my life and don’t plan on it, LOL. Thanks for the link to the gloves. Very interesting! I’ll keep those in mind if my stupid PMLE doesn’t go away. I remember one time taking a long walk after a big snow/ice fall. I didn’t even think about putting sunscreen on my face. OMG, I suffered for DAYS from the most horrible burn. Trust me, that was a big lesson learned! Glasses vs. contacts – I wore contacts from about the sixth grade until I needed bifocals. My prescription is very weird, so I couldn’t wear contacts anymore. I am so much more comfortable with glasses! I wish I’d switched a long time ago. I had to wear rigid gas permeable lenses because back when I started, they didn’t make soft lenses for astigmatism. The gas perms were so uncomfortable, my eyes were dry, and I always got crap in my eyes that really hurt.

Diane – I hope you get the readings on your watch and stuff straightened out. I’m glad the Pilates workout works for you. I’ll have to give it a chance. For some reason I’m sort of skeptical about foam rolling. Don’t ask me why. Yes, I’ll have to check out the timesavers. I like Cathe’s premixes on several of her DVDs. I’ll just have to start experimenting.

Judy – Your Peloton rides are getting longer! Congratulations! From what I’ve heard, it seems like it can be hard to find a good physical therapist. And they are so expensive. If your plan to do it at home ends up not working (but I’m sure it will), you can always look for another PT.

Did STS Disk 30 Shoulders, Biceps and Triceps this morning. Playing when can I shop. My weather apps are all showing different things. From no snow to 3". West side and northern areas are going to get hit way harder. And that's to be expected because kids up at Northern Michigan will be heading home for break. I lived that for 7 years. They had issues at Thanksgiving return and now going for Christmas break. Not just figuring out how to get across the UP to the bridge, but often worse getting from the bridge halfway down. Don't envy them. I noticed when I opened the Roku this morning that the new workouts are there, they just haven't loaded them beyond the images. At least I'm guessing that since they all show 0 minutes for time.

Valerie sorry to hear your x-country skiing plans were a bust. I believe the ski hill in Marquette is officially open as of last weekend. They'd been making snow, but did get some and then had to make more. Last year was horrible for the ski resorts in MI. Great getting in the ride. Truly I hope you get past all your computer issues soon. So frustrating.

Shannon what's the procedure for toenail removal like. I have small feet, but really little toes. The nail in my little toes has never been anything but a slit. Very weird. But, my big toes, if you a call maybe a bit more than an inch big! Curve inward. This leaves them really prone to ingrown toenails, and it's a battle I keep fighting. I know I can fix the password I just don't want to deal with it before I have to. LOL

Judy it does sound like you can save yourself the commute time and just do things at home. Sad that they are so disorganized.

Diane Sue thanks for more info on the new workout. I'll definitely be trying out the pilates one.

Carolyn that's great that your daughters will be there for Christmas. It'll not only be weird to have neither of the boys here, but also when they are it won't be at the same time. First time in 26 years without.

My xc ski history is long. I used to be a really good xc skier and taught DH how to ski. we used to go often and a lot of miles. there used to be a lot of old logging roads in the mountains that went to trailheads. we would drive up the roads as far as was safe, and then ski from there breaking our own trail. it was a lot of work but absolutely beautiful, peaceful and alone. neat footprints, lot of ptarmigans( like a grouse) in the snow. we could cover way more distance than on snowshoes because the route back was always downhill and fast on skis. we even did some xc ski camping by hauling a sled up with our supplies. overnight camping is a heavy load of things. the FS gradually let almost all those roads deteriorate or just closed them. no funding. there are few usable anymore. the roads get over grown with brush and trees and get washouts. several remaining got set aside for snowmobiles. (I will not go on a rant about motorized people.) I'm just not as good a skier anymore. part of that is way fewer places to go. we are down to only a few and they sometimes need clearing by cutting and hauling fallen treesbranches. skiing was(is) an extremely physical activity. snow conditions are often not as good either. it's warmer, makes snow sticky and gloppy. weve gone to resorts with groomed trails too, but its a completely different activity. and I'm just plain old!
The sunshine reflected off snow especially at altitude can cause serious sunburn. weird places too, like under your nose, inside roof of your mouth, under chin. most other skin is covered with multiple layers. .

computer did not want to work and suddenly it decided to. my replacement is coming in about 3 days.

shannon I have an astigmatism too but did great with soft lenses. whatever works for you is the best option. old hard lenses were less adaptable. I tolerated a lot to avoid glasses. sunglasses on snow too. your eyes can get burned from the reflection. I always wear wrap arounds for the side protection.

judy I do the same with PT. try to get a printed exercise sheet and then do it at home. I have one place close by that does a good job and the docs here will let go where you want to go.

I'm also a fan of premixes. I dont like to work out indoors for as long as cathe does.

Today I did Stacked Sets Upper Body. My time was 44 minutes with 147 calories burned, average heart rate 107, and maximum heart rate 140.

Valerie, that’s too bad about the XC skiing. It’s good that you were able to ride the mountain bike.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Cardio workout and LMR Functional Yoga Fusion timesaver.

Judy, great job with the 45 minute Peloton ride.

Shannon, glad that the toenail problem is fixed.

Cathy, great job with disc 30 Shoulders, Biceps, and Triceps.

Today I did a 30-minute Peloton walk, 10 minutes of rowing and LMR Lower Body Foam Rolling Bonus + Anytime Mobility Bonus. We bought a walking pad (mini treadmill) last week. So far, it’s working out well for doing short walks and I can do the Peloton walks using the app on my iPad or phone.

Shannon-That’s good that your doctor didn’t charge for the procedure.

Cathy-Great job with STS Disk 30 Shoulders, Biceps and Triceps. My weather apps are the same. I had 3 completely different forecasts this morning. One said 3+ inches of snow for Wednesday, another said little to no accumulation expected and yet another didn’t even mention snow, lol!

Valerie-I love premixes too.

Carolyn-Great job with Stacked Sets Upper Body.

Hi to Diane Sue

Happy Hump Day. Yesterday I did LMR Functional Core and Functional Pilates. Core was sort of fun, but like I said the other day when I reviewed it, I’m just not sure I’ll use it that often. I did not like Pilates at all, especially the parts where you’re lying on the foam roller, and when it’s under the hips. YUCK. I can think of much better ways to release the spine, or whatever Cathe said it was supposed to do. Thank goodness my toe is ready for a real workout today!

Cathy – How’s the forecast looking? I hope you get your shopping in before it hits. Toenail removal is pretty simple and quick, just about 10 or 15 minutes. The doc gives two shots into the big toe, one on each side. I guess there are two major nerves to numb. Those suckers hurt! Then he ties a tourniquet at the base of the toe. He pulls the nail off with the doc’s equivalent of pliers. It’s amazing how easily it comes off. Then if you want the removal to be permanent, he swabs some sort of acid down into the roots. He also applies something that helps to staunch the blood flow, because there’s hardly any blood on the bandage the next day. The tourniquet comes off, and he bandages the toe. You keep the bandage on overnight. Then the next day, you can remove it and just use a regular large-size Band-Aid. Soak the toe daily for 10 days. Wear the Band-Aid for as long as you need to, until the skin toughens up. Easy peasy.

Valerie – Very cool about your XC skiing. What got you into all the outdoors sports? That’s so sad about the climate change and less snow, but yeah, it’s happening everywhere. It even used to snow more down here, but it’s happening much less often now. You can rant all you want about motorized people. I agree 100%. Have you actually gotten sunburn on the roof of your mouth? Good heavens, that sounds awful!! By the way, you are awesome for being “just plain old!”

Carolyn – Good work with Stacked Sets Upper Body. Yep, I’m glad the toe is fixed too.

Judy – How was the foam rolling bonus? I’m hesitant to try those, especially considering my reaction to the Pilates. I bought a foam roller just for this series, but I’m afraid it’s going to end up as a waste of money.

Hello to Diane!

Shannon-the foam rolling bonus was good. There is only a few minutes of actual foam rolling, most of the bonus is a short workout using the foam roller as a prop, with calf presses, plie squats, side to side lunges, crossback lunges, glute bridges and inner thigh lifts. It's perfect for an add on or an active recovery day.

Shannon I grew up in wisconsin. nobody I knew did sports that I think of as sports. I used to ice skate in the winter, a little downhill skiing. I bicycled some but not very good there. too hot humid and buggy to do much in summer. I hated it there and moved to WA as a 20-something, also to get away from my crazy dismal family. I signed up for a mountaineering course because I knew nothing about anything, and thought it would be good to meet people with similar interests. water activity is big here but I dont like ater much. but I liked hiking, biking, and tried xc skiing and liked it. I met my DH in the mountaineering class. I got him interested in biking and skiing and we were already hiking and backpacking together. it was what we both enjoyed but neither of us came from families that did anything but sit and watch Tv. it was clear soon that if you wanted to do physical things you needed to stay in shape all year so we started running to supplement and set up a home gym for when weather was bad. neither of us liked or wanted kids so that freed up a lot of time and energy. we see shrinking snowfields and glaciers. places that had all year snowfields are now melted out. it makes mountain travel easier and some harder. the tree line moves uphill too so things that used to be open meadows are now becoming forested. way fewer birds and animals than there used to be. some has to do with hiking getting crazy popular and the human population going up. nothing like humans to discourage wildlife.
I have a foam roller but dont like it so far. I will try again in the new workouts. I dont remember what I got it for anymore.( FWIW I dont like massages either. Ive had 2 and could not wait to get off the table) got a balance cushion but looks like I need another one.
will wait a bit on that. I do one legged balance almost every day as part of my back therapy and biking helps balance too.

dont know how much this affects everyone else, but the big pending grocery store merger has been blocked! such great news! almost every store here would have been under one company, a terrible precedent.

toenail removal sounds less bad than imagined.

one outing DH and I had with mountaineers ( way back) was a weekend on snow learning snow travel skills and ice axe arrest. several people burned roof of their mouths. heavy breathing with mouth open can get reflected sunlight into strange places. sunscreen wont help there! DH got fried. zinc oxide was the most effective thing then. its like solid white vaseline. I dont remember what I did but got thru it without burning. back then it was just the cost of outdoor adventures. bandanas and hats helped but OMG it gets hot on a snowfield in direct sunlight. you roast!

we dont hike much anymore compared to what we used to do. neither of us like it if there are 47 other people on the same trail. our usual vacations were camping and backpacking somewhere for a week or two.
