Pentagenarians & Beyond: 12/01/2024

Yesterday, I did CDorner Step #436 "energizing" 46 minutes, 237 calories, heart rate 132/165, 4,401 steps. The music and moves were fun. Then I did Lift, Move, and Restore Anytime Mobility bonus17 minutes, & bonus upper body foam rolling 15 minutes (a bit of work near the end with push ups and triceps push ups and dips with the roller). Made my ribs a bit sore this evening. Time for both of LMR workouts was 32 minutes, 52 calories. I did the back pod work and viewed some of the barre workout. Total time was 78 minutes, 291 calories. I thought I posted yesterday.

Valerie, I am glad to hear the eye surgery went well. We always have purchased HP computers other than one Lenovo and an Apple that my husband tried and sold to someone else.

Carolyn, nice work on Jessica Smith Fat Blaster. I am not sure about how easy the Total Body will be. I have to figure out how to protect the ribs. Every time I think that I am doing well and can try a little I end up hurting.

Shannon, good job on the Mobility Fusion workout. I watched the cardio portion while using my back pod today. It looks like a good low impact cardio workout.

Cathy, nice work on STS 2 Standing Core Plus Floor and Total Body Stretching w/ball #1. It would be better having the guide. I had to write down my moves today.

Good morning, ladies. The card signing “party” is done! Yay. Ended up going very well, and everyone jumped right in, didn’t mess around and got the job done early. Now I get to stay home and work again.

I had extra time yesterday, so I did two of the new workouts. Yeah, I know, maybe a little extreme, but it can’t be worse than hauling rocks for a couple of hours, right? I did Functional Lower Body and Functional Upper Body. I did not do any of the bonuses. Lower Body is a great workout. Lots of traditional moves, but many with new twists to them. And Cathe just about killed me with the band work at the end. I don’t do those exercises very often. Upper Body seems to have a lot of shoulder work, and it also has some exercises that my arthritic wrists do not like at all. I ended up taking Tylenol afterwards. It’s a good workout, and I totally get the importance of overhead lifts (shoulder presses, etc.) as being very important functionally. I just have to be careful. So I’m not sure how often I’ll use the Upper Body workout. Maybe I can just skip some of the chapters that don’t agree with my shoulders or wrists.

I am in desperate need of a good, sweaty cardio workout, so that’s on the agenda for today!

Cathy – Don’t you just love the STS 2 Core Plus Floor? It’s my favorite one.

Carolyn – I’m glad you liked the Total Body workout. I don’t use a barbell either. Dumbbells are far more comfortable to hold.

Valerie – I’m glad your surgery went well. Congrats on getting in and out so fast! Nothing like being the first in line, for sure. Yes, it’s amazing how so many medical procedures continue to advance, and how recovery is so much easier now. Thank goodness.

Diane – I wonder how your body will respond to the Pilates workout. I saw a good review of it in the New Workouts forum. It sounds promising.

Hello to Judy!

the surgery itself is very fast. everyone is lined up in their own bed, IVs running. I was the first but the doctor was late getting there. bad fog that morning that messed with driving. the actual procedure is 15 minutes or less. you are completely awake during and he might give some directions, like "look at the lights". each person is on their own wheeled bed and ready to go. assembly line. there is no recovery time, you are ready to go immediately after. you get a little iv anesthetic to calm things but most is topical. bathroom pit stop on the way, and wheeled to the car. this clinic puts a plastic cover over the eye for several hours but it's variable. I remember back in the '50's and '60's where people were hospitalized for weeks with head immobilized. I remember visiting a family friend in the hospital. truly amazing the progress that's been made.

cathy are you affected by the lake effect snow? what a PITA that must be.

Shannon I also like dumbbells better . we have 2 easy curl bars that are great, but DH keeps them loaded up with heavy plates. I need to take off and reload to use the bar. I got tired of unloading it plate by plate while watchingout for the end to flip up if it got too uneven. I cannot use a straight bar, the angles are WAY wrong for my wrists.

My new DVD's got hung up somewhere between Grand Rapids and my Post Office, which is not a great distance, but they are finally showing out for delivery. Of course, I'm thinking that will be late since we've had 2" of snow. Yesterday I did STS 37 Squat Rack Legs. Now this workout has 4 different exercises, repeated 4 times and you get 3 minute breaks. During said breaks I did a lot of stretching. BUT, clearly not enough, because every part of my legs is extremely unhappy with me. So this morning, when I didn't shop because-2" of snow, I did Stretch Max with the band and some very uncomfortable foam rolling. Derek and I went to my parents yesterday, good timing because they got 6". Had a last visit before Derek moves to ND, and we have no idea when he'll be able to visit. Since I likely won't leave early tomorrow morning to shop because our road won't be clear and I prefer good light for that drive, I'll try one of the new workouts to help my poor legs, assuming the PO doesn't decide to further complicate their journey.

Diane Sue thanks for the review sounds like they will be very useful.

Valerie I'm glad your procedure went really well. I haven't worn make up in a very long time and before that it was sporadic. Now when going out, and I remember, I fill in my eyebrows. The out half has decided to go gray with my hair and it makes the whole of them seem non existent. Horrible how Dell is handling your computer issue.

Shannon thanks for the review of the mobility workout. Sounds good and I can already agree on the cardio without having seen it. LOL

Carolyn thanks for the review.

Hi Judy.

Today I did LMR Functional Lower Body. My time was 60 minutes and 227 calories burned, average heart rate 110, and maximum heart rate 136. This was a good lower body workout. The weights used are light to moderate and I used some of the modifications, but not many.

Diane Sue, great job with Functional Lower Body, Functional Restorative Yoga bonus, CDorner step, LMR Anytime Mobility, and upper body foam rolling. Your review of the Lower Body workout helped me decide to do that one today. The Total Body workout might be hard on your ribs, but the weights are light.

Shannon, glad that your in office time went well and you are back to working from home. Great job with Functional Lower Body and Functional Upper Body. I use gloves with wrist support when doing upper body exercises and I‘m cautious with weight selections for shoulders.

Cathy, great job with STS disc 37 Squat Rack Legs. I hope your new DVDs arrive today.

Hello to Valerie and Judy.

I'm more into make up. I use a light foundation every day. its got moisturizer and low level sunscreen. I have rosacea and this routine keeps it 100% settled down. my right eyebrow was a casualty on a pool edge when I was little. I always fill in the missing area. and mascara. the higher spf sunscreens and many moisturizers irritate and this doesn't. cant go near retinol.

Did a 30 min spin this morning. all therapy work this afternoon. getting my hair cut this afternoon. once every few months whether it needs it or not...

I’m continuing with my shorter Peloton rides, rows and lighter weight strength workouts. I also did an hour of Yin Yoga on Tuesday. We have some holiday things going on this week and weekend so I won’t be online much starting tomorrow. Hopefully I can get back to a normal workout and posting routine next week. I did receive my new DVDs this week and am looking forward to the User Guide.

Carolyn – Great job with P 30 Low Impact HiiT, Functional Total Body Timesaver #1, JS 30 Minute Fat Blaster, and LMR Functional Lower Body.

Valerie-I’m glad your surgery went well. I am similar to you with makeup. I use a light foundation with sunscreen every day. I’m sorry about your computer issue. Dell is really handling this poorly.

Shannon- I’m sorry about the sleep. I know how that goes. Great job with Functional Total Body, Mobility Fusion with the cardio add on, Functional Lower Body and Functional Upper Body. Thanks for your review of the workouts. I’m really looking forward to getting started with this series.

Cathy-Great job with STS 2 Standing Core Plus Floor and Total Body Stretching w/ball #1, STS 37 Squat Rack Legs and Stretch Max with the band plus the foam rolling. I hope you got your DVDs today.

Diane Sue-Nice job with Functional Lower Body, Functional Restorative Yoga bonus, CDorner step, LMR Anytime Mobility, and the foam rolling. Thank you for the review of the Functional Lower Body workout. I will do that one soon.

Happy Friday, ladies! I hope you all have nice plans for the weekend ahead. Yesterday I did All Out, extreme premix. Although I don’t consider this a true extreme workout, since it’s only 52 minutes. Then I did the Lower Body Balance add-on from the new Functional series. It was interesting. My first thoughts were that it would be great for people in the mid- to later phases of recovery from an ankle injury. I may use it as an add-on when I do a yoga/balance routine on my own. I also previewed the Upper Body add-on. I suspected that my wrists would not tolerate it, and I was right. I just sat and forwarded through each chapter to see what it looked like. Those moves when you put the balance disks under your hands would absolutely kill my wrists. So I won’t be using that one at all.

Somehow or another, I managed to pull something up by my left shoulder blade. Dang, it hurts. How could I possibly pull a back muscle doing cardio? Maybe I slept wrong. I don’t know. Anyhow, my workout tonight – if there is one – will depend on how that feels. This morning it even hurt when I was opening my dog’s pill bottle! Who knew that you used back muscles to do that? LOL.

Valerie – your description of the surgery procedure is fascinating. Who ever thought surgery would make to an assembly line status? I’m with you about the angle of the straight barbell. It’s a killer for my wrists too. I’ve never tried an easy curl bar.

Cathy – So did your DVDs finally arrive? Or did they get bogged down in the snow? I do not envy Derek moving to ND. UGH. How are your poor legs today?

Carolyn – I’m glad you liked the lower body workout. I think it’s a good one too. I have wrist wraps and gloves, but not gloves with wrist wraps. I should probably get some, because putting both of mine on is rather cumbersome.

Judy – I hope you have a really nice time this week with your holiday gatherings. And I hope you find time to try the new workouts.

Hello to Diane!

Shannon for the first eye surgery , I was later in the morning. they "sanitize" between patients. a very smooth transition from person to person with the same team of people. I'm guessing they can do maybe 2 procedures per hour if all goes smoothly. all the decisions are made before, like which lenses are getting implanted. my Ophthalmologist does surgeries on tuesdays. several other MD's in the group use the surgical suite other days. there are clinics where the docs exclusively do cataract surgery. I thought about using one of those but you need to transfer records to them. If you do that, I doubt you can go back to doc #1. I assume I might need other eye care as I get older, and felt better staying at a clinic where Ive been a patient for 15 years. my DH goes there too. I saw the same nurse teams both times. there is some comfort going to a familiar place with familiar faces. beds are lined up with iv's going and people chatting as they wait their turn. not a lot of white knuckles.

we did a park walk again this morning for 1 hr 20 minutes. then some necessary errands on the way home. my DVDS arrived wednesday. I looked at one workout while I was spinning. it will likely be raining this weekend so will give one a try then. what I watched looked very easy excerpt not sure I can do squats at all anymore even shallow ones. one knee is ok, but knee #2 is not. I can do them but will get sore after.

I always liked using the E Z curl bar. if the same weight plates fit it probably isnt a big investment to switch. right now I have 12 lb dumbbells that are very thick in the middle. I have trouble with the left one because arthritis is worse there. I bought them during the pandemic and the fat dumbbells were the only ones I could find.

This morning I did Functional Mobility Fusion, Basic Mobility timesaver and Low Impact Cardio add-on bonus. I did the cardio first which was 15 minutes, 106 calories burned, average heart rate 134 and maximum heart rate 162. I didn’t realize that there was no warm up until I was already doing the workout. There is a premix for the cardio add-on that includes the warm up and I will choose that one next time. The Basic mobility timesaver was 18 minutes and 62 calories burned.

Valerie, nice job with the 30 minute spin and therapy exercises. My ophthalmology office has a similar set up for cataract surgery with certain days set aside for that. There are several doctors in the practice.

Shannon, great job with AOLIH extreme and Lower Body Balance add-on. I’m glad that you can still enjoy extreme cardio workouts. I bought Cathe’s lifting gloves with wrist support and I really like them. I can see how separate gloves and supports would be cumbersome.

Judy, nice job with the shorter Peloton rides and light weights. Enjoy your Christmas activities.

Hello to Cathy and Diane Sue.

Judy, and anyone who wants to chime in- spin bike question. Do you know if the handlebars can be adjusted to an upright position? I know that’s not the best option for speed and power. But the thought of being all bent over for an entire workout makes me cringe. It would probably make my wrists hurt too. I don’t want a recumbent bike though. So maybe I should consider a treadmill after all.

Today I did Lift Move Restore mobility timesaver #1 warm up and cardio, 21 minutes, 100 calories, heart rate 122/150. I then did LMR Lower Body Bonus, 20 minutes of balance work on the discs standing. 44 calories.
I printed up the moves on the upper LMR workout from the workout manager. I won't do the bonus as it looks like it is all push ups and stuff using the balance discs. I know my ribs and chest may not handle it well yet. Things have been crazy busy. Yesterday I had a dentist appointment in the morning and came back and did LMR mobility fusions 26 minutes is all I had time for as I needed to get ready to go to my daughter's for dinner and them our grandson's musical production. Hopefully tomorrow I get up early enough to do more. I have things to get ready for next weekend family Christmas early.

thanks for that judy. I sit more upright than I used to but usually lean on my forearms on the bars. DH raises the whole handlebar section way up. not good for me. its easy, one lever, lift or lower. when I was shopping for spin bikes I remember seeing ones with 2 position bars but thats a long time ago.

Judy I dont agonize over make up. I find light foundation with moisturize, low level sun screen works best. DH makes a big deal out of using SPF 50 sun screen on days when we are in the sun more or on snow. I found using a lower level non irritating sunscreen every day protected my skin from sun damage. I also wear a hat or visor. my skin looks very good. I should have been more careful about arms and legs. still, Im late 70's and grew up before there were sunscreens, period. and I am pasty white! I had laser treatments for rosacea. rosacea is disfiguring and it hurts! people dont talk about painful a rosacea flare can be. I used to flush, get zits, and swollen areas with a flare. the topical creams made it worse. during menopause it was really awful. I spent money on IPL ( it cost no more than a years worth of worthless topicals) and completely removed every trace of inflammation and discomfort. this was 20-30 years ago and a "new thing" then. it cured it permanently , it never came back. best money I ever spent.

Yesterday I shopped so no workout. Today I did IMAX 3 step combos. My legs are much improved. Derek had the hand massager thing that is heated and noticed it in a corner of his room and I asked him if I could use it, and he said I could have it. I really worked it on my quads last night and as soon as I was done, I could feel the difference and they are vastly better today. The rest of the areas are much better too with just stretching.

Valerie I think there are a number of minor things these days that are done in an assembly type manner. When I drove my brother to get the shots in his back, the doctor who did them does nothing else, but shots like that. As to your lake affect snow question, no we aren't close enough to the lake, but my parents are, hence they got overall 8" to our under 3". I have told them over the years that that's what they get for moving south. LOL Though in reality they are more west, and only about 20-25 miles farther south than we are.

Shannon my DVD delay had nothing to do with the snow as they came the day we got the snow. Just one of those weird glitches. My favorite was the time my package made it to a facility in MI, then went down into OH, and went back to the exact same place in MI before coming to me. That one really bemused me.

Carolyn one of the reasons I really want to get the User's Guide is because so far in looking how best to use them isn't really clear. I did the beginning of the Lower Body Foam Rolling one the other night and it's a quick run through of foam rolling the legs/glutes, but then the rest is a workout using the foam roller. I wouldn't have ever thought of a foam rolling segment as a warm up.

Hi Judy and Diane Sue.

Hi everyone. Happy Saturday. Yesterday I did some gentle, selective stretching. That muscle in my back was still cranky, so I gave it a rest day. I took a walk this morning while it was still nice and chilly, in the 30s. It felt so good. It’s now about 52. I plan to do a hands-free leg workout in a bit using loops and bands. Probably by tomorrow, my pulled muscle will be ready to go again.

I spent some time fast-forward previewing some of the new workouts. I revisited the upper body balance add-on and wrote down some moves that I may try on my own. I really want to be able to hold the V-sit while sitting on the disc. That’ll be something to work up to, LOL. I looked at Pilates to see what it’s like, since I really have no clue about Pilates at all. I’ll wait for a yoga day to actually try it. It’s kind of short for the workouts I like to do right now. I also previewed both workouts on the Core disc. The 33-min main workout is a bit long for a core workout, but who knows, maybe I can combine it with Pilates on a yoga day. I’ll try the core bonus sometime for one of my regular core segments.

I think the next one I will try will be Barre. So far, I like the weight workouts the best, and then the mobility workout. I really do wish Cathe would give us some new low impact cardio, and not just a 15-min add-on!

Valerie – I’m with you about keeping an eye doc you trust. My vision is horrible, and my eye doc knows my history from way back. I’m sticking with him until he retires.

Carolyn – good work on the functional mobility workout. Yeah, the way Cathe handles some of the bonuses and stuff is a little odd on this series. But they are still quality workouts. When I do extreme premixes, they aren’t as extreme as Cathe does them. But yes, I’m very glad I can still do the longer workouts.

Diane – I know this is sure a busy time of the year. But I hope you really enjoy your grandson’s musical production and the early family Christmas!

Cathy – I envy you and all the step workouts you get to do. All the pivots really irritate my Achilles tendon. I have degenerative tendinosis. Sigh. I dearly love step. I’m glad your legs are better! Now you need to do that workout again and keep getting stronger, LOL. Oh brother, sometimes you have to wonder about the postal service.

Judy – thanks again for the link to the handle bar extenders. I’m still contemplating whether I should get a machine.

Today is my rest day. I braved the cold to go to the Farmer’s Market. It was 31 degrees when I got up this morning but was up to the 40s by the time I went out. We didn’t have the wind chill today so it wasn’t bad outside. I am always tempted to buy more produce than I can actually use, but I restrained myself today.

Diane Sue, nice job with LMR Mobility timesaver #1, Lower Body Bonus, and Mobility Fusion. That timesaver is the one that I should have chosen yesterday.

Valerie, you’re right that no one talks about the pain of rosacea. I‘m glad that your treatment worked for you. I am meticulous about my skincare routine, but I never use makeup anymore. I got out of the habit during the pandemic and just never started again. I use my cleansers, serums, and moisturizers but nothing else.

Cathy, nice job with your IMAX 3 combos. I feel the same way about the user guide. I’m trying to figure out how I want to use the workouts. The rotations help a lot with that.

Shannon, stretching is always a good idea. I’ve done some Pilates over the years, but not much recently. Some of Cathe’s core workouts have Pilates type exercises in them.

Waving hello to Judy.

Today I did LMR Core Fusion + Core Fusion Level 2, I skipped the push ups and the last plank move. I think it is a real good workout. This was 41 minutes, 147 calories, heart rate 107/149 heart rate. I finished with some foam roller work on my back and did CDorner Deep Stretch along with a few minutes with the back pod, 32 minutes, 41 calories. I decided against the upper body Lift, Move, Restore for today. Too many moves that would make the costochondritis to flare up. It was weird that my ribs bothered me last night. I do not think the cardio and lower bonus would aggravate. Maybe it was carting in the 32 pack of water and groceries along with cleaning last night.

Carolyn, I used the premix that was the part of the warm up for the Mobility Fusion (which at first I thought I chose the wrong workout) and the cardio. It was a decent workout for a short amount of time. I hope that you enjoyed your rest day today.

Shannon, I have done some pilates workouts attached to other workout sets and I have PiYo. Most of the time I feel I am in uncomfortable positions for too long and a lot in plank position. It may just be the instructors though. I have not looked at the LMR one yet. I am afraid it will make my ribs and back hurt. The Barre workout looks good. I watched it while using my back pod and stretches on my own.

Cathy, nice work on the I Max 3 combos today. I was a little surprised at the push ups and dips at the end of the upper body foam roller. I think I will skip that part next time. Is there exercises on the lower foam roller workout end?

Valerie, nice job on the park walk yesterday. I have to be careful about what types of sunscreens I use. I mostly use Elta Md for hands and arms. My foundation has SPF 50 so I usually do not add more.

Judy, good job getting in shorter Peloton rides and light weights. My workouts have been shorter because I have been so busy too. I will be glad when they get the workout guide so I can see the workouts in order and moves without going to the workout manager.

I did 15 on the spin bike and watched part of the new upper body workout. I only did about 20 min of it but had already done push ups, therapy work, curls. I was surprised. the first exercises looked easy but in reality were not all that simple, didnt plan my time well. will finish it tomorrow.
we are tearing out our old guest bathroom. had not been remodeled in 35 years. looked "old" even though it didn't get used much. upgrading the whole room. didn't intend on changing the tub but it got a big ding from some tile we were taking down so it has to go too.

diane sue, DH uses the Elta one also. I use it sometimes but not for everyday use. I'm fine with spf 15- 20. we are not in a sunny area and are pretty far north. I bought a pair of "sun gloves" for outdoors in summer. they are light gray sun blocking material with half fingers. look like bike gloves without padding. the trouble with hands are that sunscreen gets washed off. gloves have turned out to be a good option. bike gloves are good too if the padding doesnt get in the way. they cover back of hands and wrists so you dont constantly need to be reapplying sunscreen.
I use a moisturizer on my face at night only. had good luck with an Almay one that does not have retinol. my skin does not like retinol.
