Pentagenarians & Beyond: 11/17/2024

Just finished a mix I put together from Intensity, a very well named workout! Derek was, as he termed it, being an adult, and filled out his first apartment application last night. It's 4 minutes from the zoo. Very different than his multiple highway 30 minute drive now. And where his current zoo, gives all staff a couple T-shirts with the logo on them, because they are open year round, this zoo gives them a T-shirt, a hoodie and a winter coat! Do you all think my DH would be agreeable to me taking off for a couple weeks next spring. Stop in Marquette for hiking, on to Bismarck to see Derek, drop straight down to Fort Worth to see Nick...I'm thinking not, but we'll see. LOL

Valerie I can still do Lotus, but generally don't since nothing I do uses it, but when I was in elementary school (3-5th grades) we had school sings where we all went to the gym and sat on the floor the whole time. One day I got this great idea to do lotus position for the WHOLE thing. Got done and I could barely stand up. LOL I'm sure I was being all smug that I did it and trying desperately to hide the fact that it did me in, but all I remember is doing it. My husband would never attempt to do the computer stuff, and he seems to have gotten over be upset about what happens after an update, but for years, after every update, he'd go on and on about having to close out everything to use it. You'd think at this point in their existence, Apple would have figured out how for them NOT to open up every application after an update so that you have to close them all, but no.

Carolyn it's definitely easier to buy greens at the store especially pre washed ones.

Hi Shannon, Judy and Diane Sue.

Today I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga for 18 minutes.

Judy, thanks for starting the thread this week.

Cathy, great job with your Intensity mix workout. Derek’s new employer sounds like they are serious about recruitment and retention. That would be quite the two week trip if you could swing it. I always buy my greens in bunches, but I just didn’t want to deal without them this weekend. I hope that they look good next weekend. I plan to cook a collards/kale mix for Thanksgiving as one of my vegetable side dishes. I will cook them in advance and freeze.

Diane Sue, I know that you are having a wonderful day with your family.

Hello to Valerie and Shannon.

what can I say? I can sit cross legged but my knees are high. my mother used to complain when I was a kid because all the floor sitting in school got my socks dirty! after 10-15 yrs of yoga knees are just as high. never changed even a little. I've seen new, first time people show up in class and sit down, even men, and their hips open outward and their knees go almost flat. that convinced me it's anatomy. maybe some folks become more flexible and change their position a little, but not everyone. fire log was another pose that was a joke for me. shoulder moves I could always do easily. I never stopped trying but hips didnt give a damn.

good idea carolyn to prep in advance. I do a lot of things ahead of time. we don't do big dinners anymore but with one oven, it wasn't possible to do everything at once.

I ended up doing therapy , 35 min spin, and a half an upper4 body workout yesterday.

No workout today, not even the back pod work. We had our family Thanksgiving dinner and I am getting ready to go to bed. We had a nice time and played games later. Tomorrow I will pack up leftovers in smaller containers and some will go in the freezer.

Cathy, nice work on the new mix from Intensity. My husband would want to go with me. That is a nice perk getting the t shirts, hoodie and coat for working at the zoo.
I am like Valerie, my right knee is always way up in the air. Years of yoga and trying have not changed anything.

Carolyn, nice work on the Jane Adams Gentle Yoga today. I always feel like the greens go bad faster than when I get them and chop them up myself.

Valerie, nice work on therapy, spin, and half of an upper body

Happy Monday, everyone. I did my usual 5-mile walks Saturday and Sunday. The big excitement was on Sunday, when two bee keepers came to remove a hive from my Granny’s trailer. She passed away a few years ago, and since then a family friend has been renting it. He’s moved out, and we’re getting ready to pull the trailer out. Over the years, bees have built a hive in the wall and up under the eaves. The bee keepers relocated the hive to one of those bee boxes and set it up against the edge of the forest in the back yard. It was fascinating to watch them, and they told us all sorts of stuff about bees. It was a huge hive!

Judy – I’m sorry you have IT band tendonitis, and I hope it heals quickly. But like you, very glad it’s not worse!

Cathy – LOL that your workout manager thinks more of your abilities than you do! Hey, it’s just challenging you to reach higher and lift more! Congrats to Derek on his new job – and on the free coat and stuff. Very nice! I think you should take that multi-week vacation next spring, whether DH wants to or not!

Valerie – Yep, let DH have the technology setup job if he wants it. It’s a pain in the patooty, and if I had a DH, I’d let him do it too. Thanks for the info about the bikes at Costco. I think we have one in Little Rock – I’ll have to check. Yep, anatomy has a lot to do with yoga and flexibility. Over the years, my hips have become more flexible, but nothing dramatic. I will never be able to put my knees to the floor when the soles of my feet are together in cobbler’s pose. Never. And that’s okay.

Carolyn – Cold and sunny sounds lovely. I wish it would be cold here. Lucky you! I like Yoga Relax too. Cathe has some pretty decent, solid yoga routines. I’m not really sure I’ll keep yoga in my workout schedule, but I feel like I should. It’s one of those things I’m playing around with right now. I used to like it more than I do now.

Diane – I’m glad your family Thanksgiving was a good one. I’m sure you were tired, but it was a “good tired,” as they say, right?

Just finished STS Disk 21 Back and Biceps. My lower back was being cranky, so I skipped the deadlifts and stretched it during that time and it feels way better. At this point, I will never voluntarily travel more than an hour or so with DH. He is really NOT a good traveler. That trip in particular, would mean hotel stays where you check in and don't leave until check out. He gets SO bored. The boys and I do quite well as we have things to do/watch on our devices, but he can't do that. And the stops with the boys would likely include times when they are working an neither place really has much to do that we would enjoy. Again, he'd be bored. LOL I just want to have time with them, but he's not social and even with them his conversations are awkward. So, all in all, I'm over any attempt to do that. LOL

Going to be weird holidays here. Derek doesn't work Thanksgiving, so I'll do a meal for the three of us, it'll be the first time we've done Christmas on our own, as until this year Nick has flown home for it, and Derek will be gone about a week before Nick gets here. They want him to start Dec 27, so he'll be traveling over Christmas, and being Derek he's planning to work in stops at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and the Minnesota Zoo outside the twin cities cause he's crazy.

Shannon that is really cool that you got to see them move the bees. Anytime a hive can be saved and moved is huge given the population decline. Great that you got in your hikes. Do you always go to the same place?

Diane Sue I'm glad you had a nice early Thanksgiving with your family.

Valerie did you regularly sit on the floor in school to get your socks so dirty? We only did it at school assemblies. I do agree that people's anatomy can be structured differently for sure. I was incredibly flexible when I was younger, but could never do the Chinese splits yet I had a friend I cheered with them who could do those, while not having much of any back flexibility.

Hi Judy!

my mother was weird about so many things. cathy, they always had us come to front of the room and sit around the teacher in a semi circle. we all sat cross legged. we girls all wore white ankle sox. they probably did get dirty but really. what a silly thing to get riled about. we had 30-39 kids in a classroom. it was probably easier to talk to us when we were closer.
I think it has to do with the hip socket and how the ball-and-socket bone fits into the joint. its natural for many, not possible for others. I'm overly flexible in many places. no matter what I tried there was no change in hip mobility. hips ( so far) work fine and Ive hiked and ridden a million miles but no lotus.

too bad DH is such a bad traveler. I dont like drives but I can entertain myself and DH for 12 hours with puzzles and reading to myself or aloud. DH listens to sirius I tolerate it. tired of the same old thing. internet coverage is good most of the way and the areas where its not are smaller sections that im familiar with. lucky I can read without getting motion sick. I cant sleep.
we were hoping to go to montana next weekend. weather looks doubtful. undecided/.
shannon how cool to see a hive being moved! weve had big hornet/yellow jacket nests but never a bee hive.

Today I did JS Pyramid Power Walk for 30 minutes, 201 calories burned, average heart rate 128 and maximum heart rate 160.

Valerie, good job with therapy, the 35 minute spin and upper body work. I can’t sit cross legged either.

Diane Sue, I’m glad that you had a nice early Thanksgiving with your family.

Shannon, your walks sound very relaxing. How nice that you could see the bee hives moved.

Cathy, good job with STS disc 21 Back and Biceps. Holiday celebrations definitely change as our children grow up and have their own lives. We will have one daughter and her family for Thanksgiving this year, but they won’t be here for Christmas. They alternate years with his family. The other two daughters can’t come for Thanksgiving.

Have a good day everyone.

Yesterday I did a 20-minute Peloton ride with a 5-minute cool down. Today I did a 20-minute row, 10 minute upper body and 5 minutes of core. I’m going to keep my workouts on the shorter side for a few more days. I have my first PT appointment next Tuesday. I spent 3 hours decluttering our office and office closet today. The closet was the hardest part. We have a lot of miscellaneous things stored there and I needed to get everything off of the floor, which meant moving and going through several large storage tubs. Hopefully we can schedule a carpet measure soon and keep the momentum going with this project.

Cathy-Great job with your Intensity mix workout and STS Disk 21 Back and Biceps. That sounds like a fun trip that you have planned, hopefully it will work out for you.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga and JS Pyramid Power Walk. I need to get back into JS workouts again, I really enjoyed them when I was doing them regularly. I love Peloton, but the one negative is that it keeps me from doing some of the older workouts that still love too.

Valerie-Great job with your therapy, 35-minute spin and upper body work.

Shannon-Your walks sound wonderful! Nice that you got to see the bee hives getting moved.

Diane Sue-I’m glad that you had a good early Thanksgiving with your family.

Today I did CDorner Halloween 2024 Step, 47 minutes, 220 calories, heart rate 125/150, 4,206 steps. I then did Raw Yoga Stretch and Flow with Mira Chest stretching/shoulder & neck, 37 minutes for both, 52 calories. I also did the back pod work.

Shannon, nice job on the walks this weekend. Bees can be interesting. My aunt kept bees and had multiple hives. She sold honey for years. My daughter and her husband tried twice my aunt told them the first hive they had had mean bees. I never thought about bees having mean or nice personalities. Anyway, their first hive did not do well, and the bees died off. The second time they got nice bees, and they got honey. They only lasted a couple of years. I was hoping for more honey. I have purchased honey and bee pollen from a local place and have read a lot of info on bee keeping they send out via e-mail. Interesting stuff.
The storms last night and this morning kept making lots of power outages off and on. I realized several of our surge protectors do no work anymore as surge protectors. Everytime the power goes out I have to reboot my husbands hearing aid case. I think that may be the problem with my tv in the workout room having color issues. We had bad storms just before that started happening. I am replacing several of them.

Cathy, nice work on STS Disk 21 Back and Biceps. Sometimes it is hard to get everyone together at the same time. We were missing 3 family members yesterday. Still, we had 17 of us counting my granddaughter's boyfriend.

Valerie, maybe the weather will change for you. We had downpours so heavy last night and this morning. They cancelled school because it rained so hard visibility was bad for driving. The sun came out this afternoon and we went and checked out the area nearby with trails for walking and bikes. It had a lot of stuff. I saw one biker and mostly people walking their dogs there. My husband is working on getting his second bike rack set up. Hoping to maybe go tomorrow and ride.

Carolyn, good job on JS Pyramid Power Walk today.

Judy nice work on yesterday's 20-minute Peloton ride with a 5-minute cool down and today's I did a 20-minute row, 10 minute upper body and 5 minutes core. Cleaning out closets with lots of things stored in them is a lot of work. I hope it goes smoothly for you.

Today I did Live Weight Plate Abs and STS 2 Total Body Stretch.

Valerie WOW on those class sizes. We generally had around 28. My class was the largest to every go through the school, my brother's class two years later out did us. They built a new school that opened when I was in third grade, but the years proceeding that they were stuffing us around the area in old school houses. I was in a 2 room school house in town. While living in the country which was weird. It had a kindergarten and a first grade, The new school added 4 rooms for each grade, which made for 4 elementary schools, but even then I found out not that many years ago that when we were in 5th grade there was actually one classroom at the high school! They had to go every day for recess and lunch to the elementary school next door, but THEY got to go to all the high school assemblies. Sorry to hear your your trip to Montana might get delayed.

Carolyn great job with JS Pyramid Power Walk.

Judy great job with the Peloton workouts. Hopefully the PT sessions will help you.

Diane Sue, always a pain when there are a bunch of short power outages, as bad as a longer one, since if you are awake you keep resetting things every time. Great job with CDorner Halloween 2024 Step and Yoga Flow/Stretch.

Hi Shannon.

This morning I did STS 2.0 Upper Body 2, express one set premix. My time was 49 minutes, 121 calories burned, average heart rate 103, and maximum heart rate 133.

Judy, great job with 20 minute Peloton ride and 5 minute cool down, 20 minutes of rowing, 10 minutes of upper body, and 5 minutes of core. Jessica’s workouts are just right for getting a good workout without feeling like I’m killing myself.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Halloween 2024 step, Raw Yoga Stretch, and Flow with Mira stretch.

Cathy, great job with Live Weight Plate Abs, and STS 2.0 Total Body Stretch.

Waving hello to Valerie and Shannon.

Yes class sizes were pretty overwhelming in the 50's. at least 30 kids per class. those poor teachers! kids were more disciplined than they are today so it worked out. we used to have 4 shifts using the cafeteria, each a half an hour long. lines in bathrooms etc. that is so true about power outs. go and reset everything and then do it again in 20 minutes. etc. were not sure at all about MT. we have a limited window and if weather isn't pristine it wont be worth the drive.

did a yard walk yesterday for 30 minutes and therapy work.

we have potentially bad weather later today. intense wind storm with rain. wind will blow in opposite direction than normal, and that is the most concerning. from the east rather than the west. its very wet already and blowing trees the opposite way can be destructive. we are getting our kitchen cabinets refinished right now. they use some caustic chemicals on the old finish. use an industrial fan to clear out the fumes. we told them come early today, but its already 8:40 and no one is here yet. hoping to get itdone before the storm develops, if it does. very hard to predict who will get intense wind and who wont, but we will likely have power outs around here. the tree doesn't have to be across the wires in front of your house to cause widespread outage. we are charging everything up. we wont have kitchen access all day either, and dishes and kitchen supplies are not accessible right now. all taped off and cabinet doors gone. thinking of dinner in the camper! the last predicted wind storm didnt materialize so we will see.

Today I just did CDorner yoga mobility and flexibility and her mobility challenge neck and shoulders, 49 minutes, 60 calories. I have been hurting again since all of the work I did preparing for Thanksgiving family day. So, a break today.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I got up at 4:15 and hit the road early to go to Little Rock for some work. I had some meetings and other stuff to do. Monday I did STS 2.0 Giant Sets again because I wanted to play around with a few changes. They made a big difference for the leg exercises! Not so much for the upper body, but that’s okay. Yesterday I did After Burn. I’ve always loved that one. I’ve been doing some thinking about my workouts. I’m not as ready to back off as I thought I was, LOL. My main concern was about getting dizzy during cardio, but the cardiologist said all is well. So I’m going to push the workouts a little more and see what happens.

Cathy – I do think you need to take that trip and spend time with your boys, because really, they’re not boys anymore, are they? These times will be few enough in the future. Yes, I usually walk on the same route. It’s not a nature hike, it’s a walk on the road (not a highway, just a rural county road). I have to pick my times carefully because we don’t have sidewalks here. So I go early in the morning on weekends, before everyone starts moving around. The route I take has the most hills, but not big ones. Just low rolling ones. Okay – wow. Your school sounds even smaller than mine! We had about 100 students, K-12. I graduated in a class of 14.

Valerie – I’m glad we don’t have yellow jackets. Ouch. Although when we first moved out here, we did. My dad drove over a nest in the ground while he was bush hogging the field. That was not fun. I saw the weather moving in over the Northwest. Wow, that looked pretty amazing. How is everything now?

Carolyn – Do you have all of Jessica Smith’s DVDs? I was sort of interested in them at one point. I should probably get them while they’re available, for the time when I do need to slow down.

Judy – how’s your knee? Way to go on decluttering. That must feel good. I know you’re looking forward to the new flooring!

Diane – Very cool about your aunt keeping bees. The guy who moved our hive said that if bees in a hive are mean, it’s because the queen bee is mean. He said if you replace the queen bee, the whole hive will calm down. Very interesting! We got some of your storms the other night, but nothing as bad as what you experienced. The front was not as intense down here. Dang, I sure am sorry you are hurting again. You’ve been so careful, and one day messed you up again.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout one. That was 26 minutes, 199 calories burned, average heart rate 135, and maximum heart rate 156.

Valerie, nice job with the yard walk and therapy exercises. I hope the contractors were able to work on your cabinets.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDorner yoga and mobility. I’m sorry that you are in pain again.

Shannon, great job with STS 2.0 Giant Sets and After Burn. I don’t have all of Jessica Smith’s DVDs, but I have a few. I use her cardio and yoga or stretching more than strength workouts .

Hello to Judy.

Yesterday I did 60 minutes of Peloton rides, 30 at a moderate intensity and 30 at a very light intensity. I did 20 minutes of Arms & Light Weights after that. Today I did 40 minutes of Peloton strength work and a 10-minute stretch.

Diane Sue- Great job with the CDorner Halloween 2024 step, Raw Yoga Stretch, the Flow with Mira stretch, the back pod work and CDorner yoga and mobility. I’m sorry that you are in pain, I hope you feel better soon.

Cathy-Great job with Live Weight Plate Abs and STS 2 Total Body Stretch. I’m looking forward to PT, to see what they have to offer. If it doesn’t seem worthwhile, I won’t continue. There are so many PT channels on YouTube that can probably do it on my own anyway.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2.0 Upper Body 2, express one set premix and Cardio Quick Fix, workout one. I agree about Jessica’s workouts, they are intense enough that you feel like you are getting a good workout without it being too much.

Valerie-Great job with your walk and therapy work. I hope you are doing ok and staying safe with the weather there.

Shannon-Great job with STS 2.0 Giant Sets and After Burn. I like After Burn too, that’s another one that I need to revisit. My knee isn’t too bad. It’s a little better than it was last week.

yesterday I did a spin for 35 min and half of stacked upper body and therapy. today I did a 90 minute park walk.

the storm last night was impressive. we came thru without any damage. the power flickered several (many) times. we were sure it was going out but it didnt. it was windy, very windy. our immediate area did not get the brunt of it. the wind came mostly from the east because of the low pressure area off to the west , not the usual direction so not a typical storm here. it was a "WOW" looking swirling circle of clouds when offshore. . this morning we drove to the state park we walk at and did a 90 min walk. there had been a lot of power outs there, and a ton of tree debris down all over. 4 trees across the trail but minor size ones we could step and just tons of limbs and branches. tide was very high. no beach left at all and rough water. lots of ducks had blown in and were along the shore. still very windy there. we kept an eye on trees while walking. some ski areas opened today. another smaller storm on friday.

the cabinet guys come back friday and will put the doors and drawers back on and in. they are doing a very nice job. we did not want to replace the cabinets but they needed freshening up because the finish was worn and not cleanable anymore. we used this to declutter a lot. more needed but this was a start.

Today I did CDorner Step #413 no breakdown, 26 minutes, 120 calories, heart rate 120/141. I did Raw Glute Finisher with a medium fabric loop, 17 minutes 63 calories. I started the bridge work, but stopped because I could feel it in my chest and ribbed. I finished with CDorner 30 minute Full Body Stretch with strap for part of it, 33 calories. This one holds stretches for 1 minute and has a timer. No timer on the warm up moves. Total time 73 minutes, 196 calories. I also did the back pod work. Feeling better today.
