Pentagenarians & Beyond: 10/6/2024

Today was STS Disk 2 Back and Triceps. In our continued not October weather, it's going to be 78 today and we have a red flag warning. Surprised it didn't happen sooner as we haven't had anything but super light rain here for about a month. Still no rain in the forecast for the next couple weeks, while other areas are getting way way more than they could ever need. My sister needs one thing to fall in place tomorrow and they will head back to NC, as they are in the Tampa area and the latest hurricane is heading right for them.

Diane Sue great job with CDorner Arms and Abs. It's always a pain when a workout turns out to be working an area you weren't expecting. I think the craziest things on some fridges is the ones that have a built in computer screen. I find it quite easy to bring up recipes and my iPad, whose cases folds into a stand and I can have it sitting right next to me on the counter.

Carolyn are you going to be affected by Hurricane Milton?

Hi Judy and Valerie.

We drove back to WA yesterday. 10 hrs and 45 min of delights. not a bad drive. its also unseasonably warm in MT. this week will be similar , but also a smoke issue now. we think it was from a fire near Sheridan WY that must have grown due to the wind. we got out of the smoke quickly as we drove west.
so sad that florida is bracing for another hurricane. I have friends there too. it has to be exhausting expecting another storm already. I hate Florida weather. the reasons people live there are beyond understanding. hard to imagine this being the course every year but with climate change, no way to know. warmer air holds more water and contributes to storm formation so it does not look promising.

cathy those screen fridges are expensive. I love my French doors but they are plain fridges. I love the thru the door filtered water but thats as fancy as I will get. its like the jazzy washers/dryers. gee, what kind of service nightmares would they be? seems to unnecessarily complicate having your food stored properly and your clothes washed and dried.

we have our old fridge in the garage now. it still worked fine. life span of new appliances is not like old ones. the garage fridge was 30+ years old and still going. DH suspected it was failing. it outlived several other newer ones. we replaced with a french door in the kitchen and put the side by side in the garage. as long as it does basic things right, Im fine.

This morning I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga for 18 minutes. We are not expected to be impacted by Hurricane Milton, but these things can change. I hope not. The southern part of our state is still without power in some areas and the clean up is ongoing. Augusta and Valdosta were both hit with the full category 2 force impact.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Arms and Abs and Flow with Myra Spine Flex.

Cathy, great job with STS disc 2 Back and Biceps. I hope that your sister gets back to NC without problems. Is NC her main home?

Valerie, glad that your drive home went well. The weather patterns are all over the place these days. Hurricane season start earlier and lasts longer now.

Waving hello to Judy.

DH and I just completed a Great courses class on meteorology. hurricanes are driven by the heat of water and also the heat from the ground surface when its warm and wet. I would not choose to live in a potential hurricane vulnerable area. not sure exactly where safe places will be in the future when inland areas can get swamped too. we are ignoring the effects of climate change. we can expect continued changes in previously predictable patterns. it sort of sounds like everywhere. trying to ignore it wont make it go away. this will be a hard adjustment for people to make because it does not look like we will be able to stop it any time soon. Im as guilty as everyone else.

Today I did STS 2.0 Supersets Total Body, 2 sets. My time was 55 minutes with 194 calories burned. My average heart rate was 110 and maximum heart rate was 139. I had forgotten how hard this workout can be. I don’t try to do three sets anymore. Two is more than enough for me.

Valerie, yes the warming ocean temperatures are a factor in the development of these strong storms. Meteorologists here provide a wealth of helpful information on contributing factors to help people understand what’s happening.

Hello to all and I hope that you have a good day.

We did a road ride this morning, our usual `15 miler it was way colder than expected and I almost decided to go back to the car. I had on 3/4 capris , a long sleeve shirt and a bike jacket, helmet cover and long finger gloves but it was not enough. I had a scarf in my pack and tied that around my head covering my ears and rode the rest of the way. it warmed up and was Ok for most of the ride but at the start I was freezing! wind chill is huge. later did about half the therapy work. I dont do everything every day.

carolyn its a so distressing to see that new storm heading right toward florida. and it amped up just as expected. I hope most people and leave the area. its such a big area with a high population. hard to imagine the traffic jam as people try to go either north or south.

No workout for me today. My husband had a neurology appointment and that took up the morning.

Waving hello to everyone. Have a great day.

No workout yesterday. Nick's car wouldn't start Sunday night and Monday morning I was texting with him. Car ended up at the Toyota dealership. Not just a new battery (the small one-it's a Prius) and the radiator was leaking plus a couple other things. It'll be ready late tomorrow morning, but a pricey fix and he had to miss a shift at work. Getting rides to and from work tonight, and he'll probably take the dealership shuttle to pick it up tomorrow. Fortunately a scribe friend gave him a ride to class this morning and he missed his afternoon class, but apparently that was okay. Not a fun surprise. Today I did STS Disk 3 Legs. Still working out what days to do things on this rotation.

My sister and her husband got to NC early afternoon today. Extra long drive with all the traffic. They left late last night and drove through. My BIL prefers to make the drive at night if he's driving. But they spent Sunday putting up their hurricane shutters along with those of two other couples. One couple are both in the hospital and another hasn't left Michigan yet. Then yesterday my BIL spent most of the day helping friends get their houses set up. He crashed soon after they got to the house in NC. They were able to find gas. Some stations were out, but it was never all stations at an exit. They aren't in an evacuation area, but their place there will get the winds and the rain.

Valerie glad your drive back went okay. I always found when riding that having my ears covered made a big difference even if the rest of me was cold. Great job with the ride and therapy work.

Carolyn great job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga and STS 2.0 Supersets Total Body, 2 sets. My sister's primary residence is in FL. They considered making it NC, but the cost of doing that was apparently more than they wanted to pay. They pretty much split their time 50-50.

Hi Judy and Diane Sue.

Cathy it is so weird. if my ears are warm, then I am ok. if my ears are cold , nothing will be right. most of the year I carry an ear band in my pack but I hadn't moved it to the pack yet. I did when I got back to the car. even a cotton scarf helped immensely. I dont carry a lot with me. helmet cover, kleenex, band aids, lip balm, ID, a map of the trail, phone, gloves, a snack, and thats about it. I keep tools, a tire pump and extra tube in a underseat pack on the bike frame. its best to over dress a little and unzip or remove as needed. I didnt look at the temp before we left and thought it was warm but it wasnt.

hope your family members all get thru this ok. sometimes they can over hype but this looks like the straight story. there are just a few miles north or south that will make a huge difference as to which area catches the worst.

I did therapy only today. see orthopedics tomorrow about my failing knee and my meager options.

Yesterday was an active rest day. Today I did 40 minutes of Peloton rides. I’m still dealing with a shoulder issue and now I seem to have a little sciatica going on. I have an appointment for a massage tomorrow and am hoping that helps.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga and STS 2.0 Supersets Total Body, 2 sets. I agree about 2 sets being enough. I hope you don’t have any problems from the storm. I have been watching some of the live weather streams on YouTube and am learning a lot from the meteorologists.

Cathy-Great job with STS Disk 2 Back and Triceps and STS Disk 3 Legs. I’m glad your sister and her husband made it to NC safely.

Valerie-I’m glad you made it home safely. Great job with your ride. I hope your orthopedic appointment goes well tomorrow. That meteorology course sounds interesting. I'll have to look into Great Courses again.

Hi to Diane Sue

Yesterday I did Raw kickbox #7, 33 minutes, heart rate 134/156, 177 calories. I followed with raw String along glutes, 20 minutes, heart rate 114/143, 83 calories. I finished off with Raw Yoga Stretch, 14 minutes, 22 calories. Total time was 67 minutes, 282 calories.
Today I was tired and dizzy. No energy since I hardly slept. I just did CDorner Total Body Morning Mobility day 6 and STS 2.0 Mobility #1, 34 minutes, 51 calories. I was planning to go to my ladies group get together to make cards, but just was not feeling up to it. So basically a rest day. I have an appointment early in the morning so will comment tomorrow.

This morning I did P 30 Low Impact HiiT which was 31 minutes and 201 calories burned. My average heart rate was 128 and maximum heart rate was 148. I did a virtual WW meeting after my workout. I find these meetings to be very helpful with the focus on wellness and lifestyle behaviors.

Cathy, nice job with STS disc 3 Legs. I’m glad that your sister is back in NC.

Valerie, I hope that your Orthopedic appointment goes well. Nice job with your therapy exercises.

Judy, great job with the Peloton rides. I’m sorry that you are still having shoulder problems and now sciatica. Hopefully the massage will give you some relief.

Diane Sue, nice job with Raw Kickboxing, String along glutes, and Yoga Stretch. Mobility workouts were are good choice when you weren’t feeling well.

Have a good day everyone.

Judy we bought two meteorology courses. the first one we didnt like, too focused on graphs and complicated physics. hard to understand. the second one was much more relatable and we liked. I want ed to understand everyday things. hurricanes, thunderstorms, tornadoes, basics about how weather works. I will look up their names of people who gave the classes. we are thinking the company is working its way toward eliminating DVDs which we prefer. easier for us because we can use them without fussing with streaming. .

ETA the Science of extreme weather. Eric Snodgrass.
the one we didnt like was by Fovell. it was too complicated and I dont interpret graphs that well. HTH.

The massage really helped my shoulders and upper back. She didn’t spend as much time on my sciatica but the plan was for her to work primarily on my shoulders so that was ok. I have another appointment in 2 weeks and she will work more on my lower body then. I haven’t gotten regular massages since before Covid started and I had forgotten how much they can help.

Diane Sue-Great job with Raw kickbox #7, String Along Glutes and Stretch. I’m sorry that you didn’t feel well today. I hope you feel better tomorrow.

Carolyn-Great job with P 30 Low Impact HiiT.

Valerie-Thanks for the info on the meteorology courses. I will check out the one you recommended.

Hi to Cathy

Today I did a workout after I came home from my eye appointment. I did CDorner Biceps and Triceps using Raw Timesaver warm up since there was no warm up, 29 minutes, 150 calories. I finished with Flow with Myra chest and shoulders stretch/mobility, 25 minutes, 37 calories. Total time 54 minutes, 187 caloriesI need to get in the rest of the upper body sometime this week. I had something happen in the joint just below my next to little finger a few days ago and it still hurts, has a knot and is bruised looking. It makes it hard to lift and avoid pressure on it.

Carolyn, nice work on P30 Low Impact Hiit. It is nice having something like weight watchers to help wit health plans and choices. I always feel like I need at least something like mobility so I do not get stiff sitting around.

Valerie, I hope that your orthopedic appointment goes well. Good job getting in some therapy work.

Cathy, nice work yesterday on disk 3 STS legs. Car repairs are no fun. That is good that your sister and her husband made it to NC.

Judy, nice work on the Peloton ride. I understand shoulder issues. Hopefully the massage will help.

Today I did Ramped Up Upper Body. My time was 51 minutes with 162 calories burned. My average heart rate was 106 and maximum heart rate was 142.

Judy, I’m glad that the massage helped.

Valerie, the meteorology courses sound interesting. I haven’t done any of the Great Courses but I enjoy learning new things.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDorner Bceps and Triceps and Flow with Myra stretch.

Hello to Cathy.

Yesterday I walked at the zoo, and today I shopped. As of this evening, my sister still hadn't heard anything about their place in FL. She knows there's no power, but may be that cell service is out too as they can't contact anyone. She said their lines are all underground, but I'm sure they lost a large number of transformers. Nick's car was finished yesterday. Ended up needing the radiator replaced as it was leaking. And they finally got our water heater in so it was a pretty expensive day.

Carolyn great job with P30 Low Impact HiiT and Ramped Up Upper Body.

Diane Sue great job with Raw kickbox #7, Raw String along glutes, Raw Yoga and CDorner Biceps and Triceps and stretch/mobility. Sorry you've been having sleep issues.

Judy great job with the Peloton ride. Glad to hear that the massage helped.

Hi Valerie.

we did a lovely hike today. 4.5 hours, not sure about mileage. probably 6-7 miles. climbed some but not crazy steep. lots of fall color and lots of frost and a dusting of snow on the ridgetops. my favorite season. I shot up and back down like I was shot from a cannon. I work a lot better in 50 degree weather.

I found out yesterday no more gel injections in my knee. insurance decided it wont pay for the treatments any more and its too expensive (somehow) for the orthopedic clinic to do it without insurance coverage. I understand a lot of people don't think gels dont work but I have had success for several years now. does not make my knees like when I was 20, but IMO it has helped. impossible to compare because if you get the injections you can't somehow also see how your knee would be without them. I seem to benefit from them. I didnt get much help from cortisone. its very subjective but IMO the gel helped.
so the other option is platelet rich plasma which I will pay for and will give a try. I also made an appt for a consult with the main doc who does knee replacements there. if it works and helps, great. if it doesnt, I will know by the time I see this guy in january. I had PLP used in my dental extraction recently. it might turn out to be useless and just a money generator that doesnt help. it may not be the same for everyone. anyway, its not $5000, its several hundred dollars. I realize no guarantees but I'll take a chance. if it puts off a knee replacement for a year I would be happy and consider it money well spent.

my friends in florida are pretty much ok. no power, lost a fence and some trees, and a freezer full of food that needs to be cooked ASAP but not too bad. they were north of the main storm area. some flooding but nobody died. houses are standing and ok.
carolyn we always want something to watch during lunch. the course lectures are 30-40 minutes. some are fantastic, others not worth it. most are beginning level classes, like "101" courses, introduction to botany, or Geology, history etc. we enjoy them and feel weve learned a lot . get them "on sale" and dont overpay. like college there are some great teachers, and some not so great. if you are disappointed, they will refund your money but you must return the DVDs. thats the only way weve used them. a big range in instructors and how serious the courses are. we've been satisfied with most.

Today I did CDorner #423 Step Workout with minimal breakdown, 47 minutes, 251 calories, heart rate 135/168, 4055 steps. I then did STS 2 Metabolic Core warm up 11 minutes, 46 calories. I also did CDorner foam roller workout (stopped when she had it on her upper hip/lower back) and did 8 minutes of her neck and shoulders stretch from her mobility challenge which was 12 calories. Didn't use the watch when I did the foam roller.
