Pentagenarians & Beyond: 03/16/2025

This morning I did IMAX 4 Combos and then I put together a workout using all the standing core from STS 2 and a ball stretch from Total Body Stretching. Rainy here, though it hasn't rained in a few hours now. We lost 2 trees in the crazy winds yesterday. One I called the grapevine tree, as it died years ago and was spiraled with grapevines several inches thick. The other one, I'm not sure what it was. Both fell in our yard, one in a way that we probably can just leave it, the other one has about 10 feet into the grass.

Valerie snowy's and short-eared are so different, that I can't imagine how anyone could confuse them. Sadly, short-eared are endangered here. Doesn't help their cause that they are ground nesters, often choosing fields. We have the same thing here with the snowy's. There are always areas in the UP that get quite a few wintering, but years when the lemmings are down, they come further down. My favorites are Barred and Saw-whet (which are just SO cute). When I used to stay on Mackinac Island twice a summer, I'd sometimes go out hiking at night and you could hear the barreds in the woods. I've read that they like to fly behind people, but never had that happen. Great Horned and Barred Owls are the most common owls here. Though where we are at we only hear Great Horns and Eastern Screech Owls. And going back a bit, Derek and I have long argued over orange flamingos. We've seen at least 3 different types of flamingos and I feel there are definitely some that are orange. He feels they are always a variation of pink.

Carolyn I hope you weren't impacted by the storm. I know near my sisters place in Brevard got hit pretty hard. The city is out of power, and she said there were at least 14 trees that hit houses, including one that killed a couple boys.

I did my usual Sunday morning yoga/mobility for 20 minutes this morning. The heavy rain and lightning from the storm came through around 2:00. We don’t have any damage, just a lot of debris in the yard, but some areas were not so lucky.

Valerie, nice job with the yard walk and therapy work.

Judy, great job walking 40 minute of Peloton ride, walking, and 20 minutes of Peloton lower body.

Cathy, great job with IMAX combos and your blend of STS 2 standing core and Total Body Stretch. The storm did a lot of damage and left a trail of destruction in its wake.

Hello to Diane Sue and Shannon.

I couldn't understand how they got confused about short ear versus snowy owl. they ran a big pictorial article about how lucky this person was to get pics of the "snowy" owl. I contacted them to put in my 2 cents but never was acknowledged. we have short ears here, also screech and pygmy owls and great horned but the most common is barred. i saw the great gray in our yard a few years ago. we hear a barred one in our yard daily so maybe it will nest here. last year a pair nested in a neighbor's yard. they were vocal and visible teaching their offspring to fledge. we have spotted owls in the mountains in old growth forest but they and barred look so much alike I would not trust I could tell the difference. we see a lot of barred in the mountains often flying and roosting over roads. love seeing and watching owls!.

I did half the stacked upper body workout and a short spin and feel appropriately slightly sore, I lightened some weights and skipped most over the head moves, or did them with one arm. will do again tomorrow. want to ease back in. doing shopping today.

what a nasty series of storms.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, ladies! Is everyone wearing green? I am not.

Going back to Friday, I did LMR Functional Core Fusion and Functional Yoga Fusion, which made a very nice recovery workout. Saturday I was able to take a five-mile walk after the rain stopped. Sunday I raked leaves and moved a bunch of very heavy rocks. I am sore today and probably need to take a rest day. I certainly don’t need to lift weights, which is my normal Monday workout.

When I was moving rocks, I turned one over and a snake was under it. It was black on top with a red underside, thin and less than a foot long. I knew it wasn’t one of our poisonous ones, so I wasn’t worried. But I’d never seen one before, so I googled it. It’s a worm snake, so called because its only food is worms. I’d say a good place to find worms would be under a rock!

Cathy – Good job on sleeping through your alarm Friday night, LOL. I’m sure it felt really good. Wow, you really did have some crazy wind! I’m glad no trees landed on your house. I used to have a tree sort of like your grapevine tree, only it was covered in poison ivy. Ugh, it was a true horror, LOL.

Valerie – Yes, I may have heard a barred owl, but I’m not sure. I didn’t see that one, since it was dark. And I rarely get close enough to actually identify one. I usually see them in the woods, and all the tree branches interfere with a clear view.

Judy – I hope your six-hour day wasn’t too hard on you. It’s when you do several in a row that they really add up, right?

Carolyn – I’m glad you weren’t impacted by the storms. We had a very fast-moving line come through with no problems. But like you said, some areas weren’t so lucky. Tornadoes killed three people in northeast Arkansas, and I know there were something like 30 injured as the storms gained strength as they moved east.

Good chance it was a barred owl shannon. they make all kinds of weird sounds, howls and barks. very vocal. especially during daylight hours.
snakes are fascinating. we have rattlesnakes in montana but havent seen one in a long time. supposedly there is a large den area where many rattlesnakes over winter thats close but weve never seen a single snake. other snakes often but none are poisonous. garten snakes, bull snakes, rubber boas. im not afraid of them but I dont do stupid things either. look when you move rocks, dont reach up over rocky ledges if you cant see, etc. im good at spotting them and see them where dozens of people have walked by and not noticed them. I assume because Im clumsy and watch the ground more than most people do so I dont trip. DH walks right by and never sees them.

that is scary weather. a big reason I left the Midwest. I could not function when there was a severe weather warning. it terrifies me. cant eat, cant sleep, just a mess.
