Pentagenarians & Beyond: 01/19/2025

Today I did my Jane Adams yoga/mobility for 18 minutes. It is hard to lose friends that you have known all of your adult life. The third member of the college trio passed away 2 years ago. We were in college together, all three went into the military after graduation, but different years. We were occasionally stationed in the same areas then we all retired here. It’s a major life milestone for my husband.

Judy, great job with 30 minute walk, 20 minutes of rowing, 45 minute Peloton ride and 30 minutes of PT/stretching.

Valerie, nice job with 30 minutes of spinning and 30 minutes of upper body work.

Hello to Cathy, Diane Sue, and Shannon.

Today I did a 45-minute Peloton Walk. We have a cold weather advisory for early this week, with windchills down to -20. We plan staying home as much as possible. Fortunately, I’m not scheduled to work until Feb 6.

Valerie-Great job on the spin and upper body work. It sounds like a TKR will work well for you. After seeing Cathe’s progress after her TKR, I feel like it’s not that big of a deal to get one, especially if you are in good shape, which you definitely are.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams yoga/mobility. It is very hard to lose friends, especially ones you have known for a long time. I’m keeping you and your husband in my thoughts.

No workout today. It has been a busy week. Next two weeks will be the same so if I am missing here that is why. Yesterday I did another short workout. Raw Arms 20 minutes, 119 calories, heart rate 118/137. I followed it by Lift Move Restore Core Bonus and added the stretch, 14 minutes, 56 calories, heart rate 100/133. This core workout requires some balance and coordination. Total time 34 minutes, 175 calories.

Judy nice work today on the Peloton Walk. It is really cold here today. Not -degrees though. It should warm up a little during the week. I wish I did not have to go out this week. Sitting at home in front of the fireplace is much nicer.

Carolyn, good job on the Jane Adams yoga/mobility. I have friends in my ladies group that were both in the military and married husbands in the military. They have stayed close after retirement and both couples settled here. It is fun looking at their pictures when they were young. Sadly one of their husbands is diagnosed with onset of dementia. They are both my age. Lots of memories together and sad when you cannot share anymore.

I did 35min on the treadmill today walking uphill with hand weights. I watched the total body workout, and did a few of the exercises after the treadmill. not sure how my knee will like all those squats and lunges even if they arent as intense as in older workouts. It is feeling fine today so sometimes its best to just back off a little and let things settle down.
cathe is an amazing creature and recovers in what seems like minutes. I plan on calling the ortho office and finding out how far out they are scheduling things. I am not in a rush for this.

diane sue you are right about the balance and coordination aspect. that seems to be a constant theme running thru these workouts. lots of exercises like that.

we are quite cold for here, probably mid 20's tonight. Imeant to look this morning and forgot. very frosty out. its clear tonight so will be colder.

Note: I just realized I never hit post on this!

This morning I did STS2 Lower Body 2, the 2 sets max premix.

Valerie the only positive thing about doing the Chicago route is that, as long as Derek's days off don't change, I'd be driving through there early on a Sunday morning. Sounds like getting on the list for the knee replacement now is a good idea since it's so far out. Too bad your DH is still having a hard time adjusting to the cat. Most cats do mellow out as they age, though some take longer than others.

Judy power outages in the city where you get to keep using your water is a plus. Out here everything goes, so I keep 10 gallons of water stashed for the fun use of flushing toilets. Do you have a gas stove, too?

Carolyn I'm very sorry to hear about your husband's friend.

Hi Diane Sue and Shannon.

This morning I did Live Crush it Low Impact and STS 2 Mobility 1. We are under a severe cold warning and going all the way up to 9 today. Derek's severe cold is giving them a high of -9 so I'll take our 9. Even Nick in Fort Worth is under a severe cold warning through Tuesday morning.

There's so much core involved with the new workouts that I've backed off how often I do core workouts, and use that time for something else. So many of the moves in that set involved the core.

This morning I did Rock’m Sock’m kickboxing, timesaver premix. That was 35 minutes and 255 calories burned, average heart rate 134, and maximum heart rate 164.

Judy, nice job with the 45 minute Peloton walk. We are also under a cold weather advisory, but with single digit wind chills. Nothing like Michigan, but really cold for us.

Diane Sue, nice job fitting in a short workout with Raw Arms and LMR Core Bonus and Stretch.

Valerie, nice job walking on the treadmill with light weights. I agree the LMR series has a lot of balance work.

Cathy, nice job with STS 2 Lower Body 2 premix, Live Crush It Low Impact, and STS 2 Mobility 1. This cold weather is really hitting the south this time. They are even expecting 3” of snow in Houston!

Have a great day everyone.

Today I did 40 minutes of Peloton Strength work.

Diane Sue-Nice job with Raw Arms and the Lift Move Restore Core Bonus and stretch.

Valerie-Nice job with the treadmill workout.

Cathy- Nice job with STS2 Lower Body 2, Live Crush it Low Impact and STS 2 Mobility 1. I agree, there is a lot of core work in the new series. We don’t have a gas stove.

Carolyn-Nice job with Rock’m Sock’m kickboxing, timesaver premix. It seems like most of the country is dealing with extreme winter weather this week.

Hi to Shannon

Good morning, ladies. My friend and I had a great visit, but dang was it cold. She’s in the Dallas area. The wind cut like a knife. We visited, went out to eat, etc. We did manage to take a short walk Saturday. It had warmed up a bit, and I really needed to work out the muscles in my lower back after the drive. I think I’m ready for some warmer weather. This stuff in the teens with single digit wind chills is really just a bit too much. My parents’ water froze Sunday night, but they were able to get it thawed out, thank goodness. I got home Sunday evening and had yesterday to take care of the usual weekend stuff. I also lifted weights on my own, and added on the LMR lower body balance disc bonus and ICE abs #1.

Carolyn – my belated sympathy for the loss of your husband’s friend. I hope your husband is doing okay.

Judy – Bbbbrrrrr! Windchill of -20? I hope you didn’t go outside even to take out the trash!

Diane – I hope your week goes well. We will miss you if you aren’t able to pop in.

Valerie – Cathe is truly amazing. Is she already back to doing live workouts? Wow. Best wishes as you prepare for your knee replacement. It does sound like it’s time.

Cathy – I feel for Derek! My nephew is in Laramie. Born and raised in Arkansas, he is having a hard time with the negative temps up there!

This morning I did my AOLIH mix and STS 2 Upper Body 2. Two sets Max.

Carolyn that's interesting. I hadn't heard that about Houston, but I checked and Fort Worth isn't getting it. My sister has friends who are living in their RV in Alabama and they got snow there. Almost the entire country is extra cold right now. We're at 0 going to 5 today and all the school's are closed again.

Shannon I'm glad your visit went well even with the cold.

This morning I did Barbell Total Body, 57 minutes, 150 calories burned, 102 average heart rate and 135 maximum heart rate. This upside down weather system is very strange. It’s snowing along the southern areas of the country. I just saw a picture of New Orleans with Bourbon Street covered in snow. They issued a blizzard warning for New Orleans! It will start snowing here later this afternoon.

Judy, great job with 40 minutes of Peloton strength.

Shannon, I’m glad that you had a good visit with your friend.

Cathy, great job with AOLIH mix and STS 2 Upper Body 2.

Hello to Valerie and Diane Sue.

Today I did a 60-minute Peloton Walk and 30 minutes of Yin Yoga.

Shannon-I’m glad you had a good visit. Nice job with the workout.

Cathy-Nice job with your AOLIH mix and STS 2 Upper Body 2. All of the schools here are closed today and tomorrow.

Carolyn-Nice job with Barbell Total Body. I agree, the weather this week is unusual.

Hi to Valerie & Diane Sue

we did a walk this morning, colder than usual, about 28. 1 hr 15 minutes. typical for us. what is odd is no snow in lower elevations . we wanted to snowshoe / ski and the elevation where there is enough is about 3600 feet. that's high. only major highways go that high. we don't care to deal with those crowds so usually use lower elevation areas. hopefully we get more snow soon. I can still hike like a younger person so I am hoping to get through this summer with this knee still working ok.

really, schools close for that? I shouldnt be surprised because they close here for minor amounts of snow. because the roads get so slippery and we are not geared up to sand/salt enough of them. and half the kids get bused and buses are not great on slick roads... we used to live near the schools we attended. here, if it doesn't happen every year, there's a tendency not prepare for it. we dont get snow every year but we pay for plowing either way. I know we went to school all the time in below zero weather. it was such a common thing in the 1950's. I used to go ice skating at local parks all the time in the evening and early morning when it was very often below zero. there were warming huts and we dressed for it.
unfortunately in areas where it usually isnt cold, builders take short cuts and put uninsulated pipes on outside walls and dont insulate well anywhere. our house had several areas like that. one in the garage that was easy to slide on a tube of insulation. other spots are inside finished walls, like pipes to kitchen sink/DW. we have not torn the wall open , but leave cabinet doors open at night to let warmer air in. I can imagine in places like texas and louisiana etc that there are worse flaws. we have covers for all outside faucets. it should only take once to get surprised about what frozen pipes can do. had trickle chargers in the garage and jumper cables in the trunk. motels had those hook ups on every parking space for engine block heaters.

Good morning, ladies. I’d like for the weather to warm up, please. Not to summer temps, just to get us out of this sub-freezing stuff. I don’t see how you northerners survive this every year. Ugh. Yesterday I looked at my workout schedule and flat out did not want to do what I had down for the day. I really need some new, fun, low impact workouts! Instead of the planned cardio, I did After Burn again.

Cathy – Nice job on the AOLIH mix and STS 2 upper body. Reading how your schools are closed because of the cold reminds me of the days long ago when our school closed because of the heat. It was a very poor, old school and didn’t have air conditioning.

Carolyn – A blizzard in New Orleans? Good grief, that’s just insane. Good work on Barbell Total Body.

Judy – your walk and yoga sound like the perfect workout. If it wasn’t so dang cold, I’d go for a walk outside. Blah.

Valerie – I’m glad you got to go for a walk, even though the snow didn’t cooperate with your snowshoeing plans. So you’re going to wait until next year for your knee surgery? You really are planning in advance.

Hi to Diane.

This morning I did the combos from IMAX 3 and the Lower/Upper body balance discs. Added bonus of Tux decided to help me with lower body by laying under my face during push ups and when I gave him a shove he rolled on his side claws extended - towards my face!

Valerie it is pretty standard across the board here for schools to close if the windchill is going to be -20 or lower. I still follow some things in the UP and I think every school in Michigan closed yesterday. Around here they are closed again, but I just checked and there are very few closings listed for the UP. I'm still on the NMU parent group and several people posted yesterday that their kids said when the message went out that they were closed the dorms and cafeteria erupted in cheers. LOL The winds coming off Lake Superior are brutal when it's cold and some of campus is quite near the lake and the rest not far from it. I know Nick walked the 20 minutes to his classes at the sports complex in some pretty horrific temps.

Carolyn I hope you didn't get too much snow. It's really crazy how far south that band of snow was.

Shannon some winters are much worse than others. Last winter here really wasn't too bad, and this year it was after Christmas before it got nasty here. I'd just like it to stay at least 32.

Hi Judy and Diane Sue.

this will sound like crazy but we never had "wind chill" numbers reported. started hearing that phrase sometime during my adult years. wind chill certainly was a reality but weather people didnt report it like that. the other thing was, these days mostly both parents work. a cancellation needs to get done before the last second so adults can plan to go to work or stay home. lots of changes since the 50's! when I was a kid women didnt often work outside the home. I knew one parent who did. stay at home mom was almost universal. they could send kids home early and almost everyone would be able to get into their home.
closures happened but not at the rate they do now. most kids lived within walking distance of their schools then. Milwaukee didnt get the same weather severity that northern WI did. being right next to the lake buffered temps a little. it is not as cold and wintery as it used to be! except apparently if you live in southeast. its odd when temps and conditions are so weirdly wintery there.

Cathy - Goodness, I would not want to add the Tux Challenge to my workout! Did you tell him he was a bad kitty?

Valerie - I don't remember hearing about wind chill numbers when I was a kid either, and that was in the 70s. But I think it's a good thing that they report it now, because It sure can freeze you fast! My mom stayed at home, so a snow day for us kids was no big deal. But yeah, today it can create a lot of major headaches for parents.

Okay, I was just scanning some news headlines. New Orleans got TEN INCHES of snow! Way down there? That's just nuts.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout two, 29 minutes, 213 calories, average heart rate 133, and maximum heart rate 155.

Judy, great job with 60 minute Peloton walk and 30 minutes of Yin Yoga.

Valerie , great job on your walk.

Shannon, great job with After Burn. Yes the snowfall amounts for New Orleans and other areas on the Gulf Coast is shocking. We had about 1.5 inches here, but some areas south of us had more snow. The temperature has been below freezing since Sunday so not much thawing is happening yet.

Cathy, great job with IMAX 3 combos and Lower/Upper Body Balance discs.

Hello to Diane Sue.

Today I did Glutes & Guns and 20 minutes of stretching.

Valerie-Great job on your walk.

Shannon-Great job with After Burn.

Cathy-Great job with the IMAX 3 combos and the Lower/Upper body balance discs. Chino & Shadow like to “help” with my workouts too.

Carolyn-Great job with Cardio Quick Fix, workout two.
