I didn't vote on this b/c often I do cardio & weight training on the same days, but they're split--I'll do cardio before work & hit the gym after work.

Before summer started at least twice a week I'd do them at the same time & be at the gym for like 2 hours on Sat/Sun. But I like this split much better for a couple of reasons:

--Both workouts are much better this way--I don't exhaust myself with cardio & then hit the weights, or vice versa. My strength has increased dramatically since I started this.
--I have so much more time on the weekends! Now I cram all my workouts in M-F, which can really be a PIA, but it is so worth it to be able to relax on the w/e & maybe just do some pilates or yoga or a light cardio workout.

RE: Part 1: How do you rotate cardio and strength train...

I voted cardio and weights on separate days. I recently started doing this after I switched from doing all FIRM to mostly Cathe's workouts. I think I am seeing better results this way. But, my question is, I can work out 5 or 6 days per week, about 1 hour per day. The recemommended amount of cardio is 20 minutes per day (minimum)6-7 days per week. This is for weigth loss and for cariac fitness. How does anyone accomplish this in the limited time period?. I find I see best results with weights 2-3 days and cardio 3 days /week. Thanks for the advice!:) :)

RE: Part 1: How do you rotate cardio and strength train...

I think the recommended cardio has been increased to at least 30 minutes a day.

Really the only way it's accomplished (for me anyway) is to just make it a part of your daily life. I just get up an hour early before work every day & get in some cardio. Truthfully it makes me so much better at my job--it gets the blood flowing to my brain, which is desperately needed in the mornings, it gets my metabolism moving, it really makes me feel like I've accomplished something before I even get to work.

So the one word answer is.......HABIT.

RE: Part 1: How do you rotate cardio and strength train...

I do everything every day. At least 40 minutes of cardio. I can't bring myself to not do cardio every day. Maybe once I hit my goal weight I will. But for now it's a habit I just can't break.

I'm doing the August rotation - just started - and most of these are circuit or endurance workouts, so it's on the same day. Even when I was lifting heavy, I'd either do Cardio in the AM and weights at lunch, or weights in the AM and Cardio at lunch.

My understanding is that the recommendations are 30 minutes of cardio a day for health, 60 to maintain a weight loss and between 60-90 to lose weight. I'm up in the AM too. Only way I can fit it all in and not be disowned by the family. Today's BodyMax/200 jacks/40 push ups took me 104 minutes and was a mix of weights and cardio. I can make time to do this, but it takes some discipline on my end - the snooze button calls me every morning...

RE: Part 1: How do you rotate cardio and strength train...

I voted for cardio and strength in the same day. Right now I am doing a rotation that calls for both cardio and strength on the same day 4 out of 6 days per week. On the other 2 days it's cardio only although I have recently decided to add some extra leg work to one of those days as well...

RE: Part 1: How do you rotate cardio and strength train...

Thanks, I have already eeked every workout minute I can out of my schedule. I get up at 5:00am to workout before I leave for work at 6:30. I don't think it's possible with taking care of my kids, working a high stress level job and being responsible for all the after school activities to get up earlier or workout later. I do believe you are correct about the 30 minutes. I guess that's the problem, if I do my workout as cardio, I can't fit in the weights which for "appearance" and bone density I really need 2-3 times per week.

I do it both ways, depending on time, my mood, and what sort of rotation I come up with. I like it both ways, but I prefer to do the combined workouts on weekends, due to time constraints during the week.

I didn't vote either - I like them both.

This week I'm adding 30 min cardio to my strength training days and doing full cardio workouts on non-strength training days.
