Pan's Labryinth

Has anyone else seen this? I watched it last night and found it quite disturbing and very frightening (not in a slasher movie kind of way, either). There were lots of parts where I had to cover my eyes. I'm sure glad I didn't go see it on the big screen.

Ironic you mention this film. I have not seen it but my co-worker yesterday told me he watched it and hated it. He felt he was misled about what it was about.

I have it on the way to me this week from blockbuster.com. Can't wait to see it. It got 96% on the tomato-meter at rottentomatoes.com

I think a lot of people think it's a fantasy kind of film. There was nothing misleading about the trailers. If people paid attention and did a bit of reading, they would know that it's not like the movie with David Bowie. The guy at the video store warned us that it was in Spanish with English subtitles, which we already knew, but I guess lots of people don't realize. And I've heard that people were renting it for their kids. Which is absolutely insane. If I was a kid and saw it, I'd probably never sleep again.:p

I watched this on the plane on Saturday from Frankfurt to Philly. I loved it. Then again, I enjoy dark films like Tim Burton's.

It was certainly not a child's fairy tale, meaning the film is definitely not for kids. Think the real Grimm Brothers, not that watered-down Disney crap we've been raised on.

I thought the film was excellent.

So, for those who've seen it, did you think that the faun and the labryinth were real, or did she conjure it in her head to deal with all the other atrocities going on in her world?

I am so out of touch. I had never even HEARD of this movie before this thread popped up! I went and watched the trailer for it. SPOOKY! I think I'd be afraid to watch it although it DOES intrigue me a the same time....

Saw it in the theatre. It was good, but def scary. I most certainly wouldn't take kids to it. EEKKK!!! They wouldn't sleep for weeks. I do admit, I couldn't quite figure out the end. Was she making it ALL up?? I think is a movie people will really like or really hate - no in between. I liked it, but prob one of the more frightening movies I've ever seen.

My take on it is that it is all in her mind, because at the end when her stepfather finds her in the labyrinth, the faun isn't visible to him.

She created the faun/labyrinth to escape. She witnessed horrible things and she may have been a bit insane.

I thought it was one of the most disturbing, yet poignant movies I've ever seen.

I din't find it *that* frightening, and is isn't gory. It's nightmarish but not slasher/violent.

I think the ending spoke to the human longing for happy endings.

Nancy,

I don't know if you'r referring to my post, but it's disturbing in the sense of what the girl goes through.

It really is a touching and sad movie because the girl is so young, but it is not like a gory, scary movie.

If I had to vote between this and "The Departed", I'd give the Oscar to Pan's Labyrinth.

I just put it in my queue at Netflix.

It is billed as a Fairy Tale for Adults.

Now I am having second thoughts about viewing this film.

Notes on a Scandal was disturbing enough for me.

Amy - the story is about a little girl, Ofelia, who is going with her pregnant mother to live with her stepfather. Her stepfather is a captain in post-civil war Francoist Spain and he's been charged with routing out the resistance in the mountains. When they arrive, she finds an old labyrinth on the grounds of the house and there is a fairy tale intertwined with the scenes of the captain (who is a sadistic so-and-so) trying to crush the resistance. The fairy tale is NOT a pretty, Disney thing. It's dark and scary and quite violent. The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles.

Thanks, Clare. I'm just trying to surround myself with more upbeat things these days. I'm sure it's a great film, but it doesn't sound right for me at this time. I may see it some other time.

It is certainly a dark movie! I went to go see the movie with my husband and sister. In the middle, I left the theatre. I was not offended, and I thought it was brilliant as well, but the intensity/ darkness was just something I don't tolerate well. I went out to ask the concessions guys if the violence let up much at all. They all agreed that it didn't, so I took a walk and met my sister and DH afterwards. They both agreed that it was a GREAT movie, but that it was probably a good thing that I didn't come back in to witness the rest of the gore.

I don't understand the whole "brilliance" thing. I thought this movie was OK, maybe 3 out o 4 stars, but nothing to win awars except maybe for special effects. It was cool that she was imagining all of it, it was a neat story, but even being "gory" I didn't see that either...or scary...nope.....I was way more freaked out at 28 weeks later and that story sucked...
