Pain in left quad???

Hi Cathe,

I was hoping you could answer this one for me. I run alot...more so this time of year. I was doing pretty good in the injury dept until recently. Im not sure why but when I start running I have this uncomfortableness (if thats a word) in my left quad, right in the center. It doesn't really extend any further then that. Im not sure what may have caused this b/c I haven't injured myself doing anything, I change my sneaks quit frequently and I also weight train.

I am covering a fair bit of distance each week. Anywhere from 60-70 kms and I am currently doing STS on the days suggested. Its not an unbareable pain or even a pain that I would have to stop for but with racing season here, its causing me to worry a little. My next race isn't until the 26th of July and its a 10 mile one. I think I should be able to take a few days off and not be affected by it at all.

My question is, what could it be and how can I fix it? Is it a torn muscle maybe? It doesn't hurt when I walk or when lift...just when I run. Would a week off help? In the past it would ease up about 10 mins into my run but today it stayed with me the whole time.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much!!!

I can diagnose you over the internets.....for a small fee. heh heh heh! :p

PS: Uncomfortableness is not a word. Discomfort is (that internets tidbit was a freebie) ;)

Hmmm...When I read your post it made me think of a stress fracture. Let us know what you find out.

Hi Lori Ann! Sorry to hear your leg is sore lately. I really can't tell you exactly what this could be but from what you are describing it sounds like the start of an overuse injury making an appearance. These types of injuries usually develop from highly repetitive motion over time, especially so if there is a sudden increase in frequency, duration, or intensity without the proper recovery time before hitting the activity again.

You definitely will do yourself a favor to rest it for about a week and do a lot of stretching and icing to the area along with isolation leg conditioning drills as to keep the area strong, but free from the high repetition activity.

If after the rest period it doesn't go away definitely have it looked at by your doctor.

Good Luck and hopefully you are feeling perfect in time for your race :)
