Pain in joint of big toe.. is it a bunion?

Hi,

I have been dealing with pain in the joint of my big toe on my left foot for quite some time know. I still manage to get through my cardio workouts but it's not very comfortable. My mother is telling me she thinks it's a bunion. I thought with bunions you had more of a bump on the side of your foot and I don't have that. It's a constant ache. Bad thing is now it seems to be starting in on the right foot. Not sure if it's a bunion or if there is something else going on.

Does anyone have any suggestions. Is there a better shoe to wear for this type of problem. Any suggestions to ease the discomfort??

Any feedback or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Brenda

Brenda,
I have the exact problem you describe, I went to a podiatrist and it was a bone spur. It still bothers me at times so I wear a "bunion pad" when I workout, you can buy them at wal-mart. I am not sure why this helps a bone spur but the padding makes it feel better, if you have a bunion it may help but definitely go to a podiatrist and have them xray your foot to be sure.
Hope this helps.

Could it be gout? I think gout often starts with a pain in the big toe - not sure if it's the joint or not...

Not a bunion

i've had 2 bunion surgeries, and they are not in the joint of your big toe, but on the side - they'll bulge out. Bunions are a misalignment of your big toe and the pain is like a burning lower down on your foot. Definitely, though, find a good podiatrist and have him take a look at your feet. I just got orthodics made for my shoes because the mechanics of my feet are terrible. I over-pronate and have low arches. These problems are why I've had to have surgery on both feet. You want to nip foot problems in the bud and not ignore them.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the information and input. I was thinking of trying a bunion pad to see if that helped. Yeh, I guess I better get it checked out so I know for certain what I'm dealing with.

Thanks again!
