P90X

Hi

I've been working out with Cathe since Feb 07. I love Cathe. I saw a commercial about P90X and I know some of you like that workout. What's so special about it and how does it compare to Cathe? Will I chock my body if I use it after using Cathe or it's kind of similar.

I am in Canada, where do you think the cheapest place to buy it is?

I need to see change in my body. I am doing different exercises with Cathe but I feel stuck in my weight and body look.

Thank you
Darine

Hi, I have been thinking of making the same purchase. I know the shopping channel had it as of last week. You might want to check them out.

P90X is a great investment. Definitely different than Cathe (at least what she has out now). I have done 3 rounds of it. And I still use some of the w/o from time to time on their own.

As far as where to order from, I am not sure since you are in Canada. I know at one point they had it on QVC.

You might look into Cathe's STS too- just a thought ;)

ok, so the program is done in 2 weeks? Since there are 12 workouts, I am aussuming 6 per week. Is that how it's suppose to?

Is it harder than Cathe? What kind of difference did people see

sorry to ask again, I just would like to get more opinions

P90X is a 90 day rotation. I am not very good at explaining the rotation. But you are basically alternating the workouts in a way that your body should improve.

I could not do chinups or pullups before p90X, but now I can do several in sets. My main gains were strength. I did not follow the nutrition plan.

I live in Canada and I purchased my P90X through beachbody.com. I really haven't seen it advertised anywhere else. That seems to be the only website that sells it, as far as I know.
Give it a try.

If you do an advanced search for P90X in the title of thread (Open Discussion), you'll find a lot of info about it.

Like Catherine says, it's a 90-day program. You have 3 weeks of intense work (a three-day split weight workout, a plyo workout, a Kenpo cardio workout, a yoga workout and a stretch workout) followed by a recovery weeks(focusing on core work---a great workout called "Core Synergystics"--yoga, cardio and stretching). Then you go back to intense work, with two different upper body workouts (same lower body). The last 5 weeks are four weeks alternating between the intense workout weeks in segments 1 and 2, followed by the final recovery week.

Definitely worth the money, IMO (and I paid full price when it first came out).

And compared to what Cathe has already come out with, quite different (STS looks more similar, though since it's not out yet, I don't know if it will take the title of "best workout system" from P90X or not). The way Tony (the instructor) cycles the exercises is much more effective and interesting, at least for me, than the straight-set workouts Cathe usually comes out with. Tony also incorporates rest and recovery, and the entire system will teach you how to set up an effective rotation.

Hi there!

I'm not sure if all the threads from the old forums made it into the new "Nation" setup, but if you do a search for P90X you should turn up a LOT of threads that describe it in detail. Also, there are some coaches on this board who will very likely chime in next time they visit.

I have P90X, and here's my take on the system. This is just my opinion.

The package includes 12 DVDs, a nutrition plan, a workbook and a calendar for tracking your workouts and recording your progress.

To start the system, I needed to buy a pull-up bar (I bought the door gym from Amazon, about $40, but there are lots of choices). I already had a variety of dumbbells and a barbell.

The nutrition plan is very much like "The Eat Clean Diet" or any lean protein/veggie/complex carb plan of that ilk. So, probably effective and helpful if you need guidance in that area.

P90X works using "Muscle Confusion", which means that you do essentially the same workouts for three weeks, take a rest week, then start a different cycle for the next three weeks, then another rest, etc. You master one series of exercises, then present your body with a new set of challenges. The theory is sound, as far as I know. It's similar to the principle behind STS and the mesocycles.

Each workout is about an hour in length, including a warm-up and cool-down stretch. Ab Ripper X is only 15 minutes, and you are encouraged to use it as an add-on.

I was already in good shape when I started, and I didn't notice any HUGE improvements, but I also didn't actually do the whole thing as written. One change worth noting: at the beginning, I could do NO pullups. I can now do three to five, depending on the day.

I admit that I have a bit of a limited attention span and I get bored pretty easily. I rarely stick to a rotation for more than a month. Six weeks is pushing it. 12 weeks...well, it was never going to happen. I tried all of the workouts. Some were pretty challenging and fun. Some of them I just didn't like. At all.

I liked Tony just fine as an instructor, and all the workouts were sorta challenging, but personally (I emphasize "personally", because I know many people on these forums REALLY LIKE P90X, and it really delivered results, and each person's experience is unique- again, just my opinion), I didn't find any of it as challenging as Cathe's workouts. You are encouraged to select challenging weights and to push yourself, and I'm totally into that, but even going full-force, crazy-hard into some of these, I felt like they were just slightly easier. Still effective! But easier.

Workouts I did once and will never do again: P90X Ab Ripper X, Back & Biceps, Cardio X, X Stretch, Yoga X. Ugh.

Two that were just OK: Chest & Back, and Chest Shoulders & Triceps.

Ones I liked: Legs & Back, Shoulders & Arms, Kenpo X, Plyometrics and Core Synergistics. Especially the plyometrics and the core synergistics. I include these in rotations all the time.

So now you have a detailed opinion from someone who loves to workout hard, is in good shape, and prefers Cathe to all other instructors. Who has a sufficient amount of focus to complete a one-month rotation, and doesn't really care for pull-ups and push-ups. I like the low-tech, traditional gym-style approach, but I guess I didn't appreciate having 90 days of workouts and nutrition planned out for me as much as I thought I would. I like a bit more flexibility and surprise in my program. I'm more excited about STS, because Cathe only schedules three of my weekly workouts and I can do as I please the rest of the time. I think I'd be more likley to adhere to that style of program.

It's still a solid bunch of workouts that you can use to change things up, and heck, maybe you would like some of the stuff I didn't like? Hope this helps, and good luck! Let us know what you decide and what you think!

I'm in canada and bought my P90X at the store, "As Seen On TV", if you have one of those stores close to you, they have most of the BeachBody products. Then you have no shipping charges, etc. Kim

Here are my thoughts. I am new to P90X. Like you I've sorta got sucked into the informercial and the results of the people on the infomercial. I researched like crazy trying to find reviews of it. Of course also like you I noticed a lot of people here that love it. I went ahead and bought it from Amazon.com for about $90 w/shipping. Now down to the workouts. Cathe is sorta the ultimate standard of ADVANCED home DVD fitness instructors out there. I also like Ilaria, Mindy, Jari, and the Element series of yoga, ballet conditioning. I only mention this because if you are particular about cueing and instructors with regards to your DVD's I highly suggest you do a P90X search on youtube to get a preview of his style. He does not do the whole workout with you and instead walks around instructing and cueing based on the other people working out with him. Also you have to set your own goals. It isn't the way Cathe's workouts are which she pretty much picks a weight and does 15 reps. For example when your doing push ups he'll ask you and the gang working out with him "How many?" Meaning how many are you going to do within a period of time. I sorta just pick someone to follow and do what they are doing because I don't do good with setting my own goals. I have to have someone tell me what and how to do it. Then you write down and keep track of what you've done. So, to answer your question is it as hard as Cathe's? It can be if you push yourself. It totally opens the door for you to set yourself up for success. Now as far as the style of teaching. I don't care for it. I'll keep it and maybe get used to it. I think it is good to have in your fitness library. I think I'd much prefer Cathe's 1 rep max and STS but like I said Cathe is sorta my standard.

P90x is a very effective program, imo.

I followed the program for the full 90 days and had great results. I saw noticeable results from days 1-30, no change for days 30-60, but then major changes in days 60-90. So this shows you sometimes you just need to stick with a program because you won't see changes every week. Things sometimes take time.

When I started the program I had to do pushups on my knees, now I can do them one-handed.

As far as being advanced, if you think Cathe is advanced, then you will find this advanced as well. Well, the weight work and abs is advanced, the cardio is not as challenging. Some of the weight work is more difficult than Cathe - Chest and Back for example is all push up/ pull ups. That's hard. I ended up subbing the P90x cardio in the program for other cardio. But what you learn for P90x is the power of a rotation and that you don't necessarily need to do a bunch of cardio to get results.

Thx

very helpful

I really want to buy it now. I will do search for the cheapest place.

Hey Darine! I LOVE P90X. I used Cathe workouts for a good year or so before finally trying it. I love Cathe, but I'd never pushed myself like I've pushed myself w/ P90X. I could not do chinups or pullups when I started and now I can! I've gained so much strength from P90X.

Everyone else kind of answered your questions. Feel free to ask if you have any more. I'm a Team Beachbody coach (click on the link in my signature).

HTH!

after completing my first rotation,i lost inches in my hips and gained muscle and do alot more pushups. with cathe,i did not have as much strength gain and my core was not as strong. cathe is good for cardio and legs. i just decided to get STS from watching a preview. instead of doing her usual 3 sets of 12,its more supersets which i like much better

I really liked P90X, I did it with DH and we made it about 70 out of 90 days into the rotation. I got really sick of some of the workouts, but thought the program was good. The current major difference from most Cathe is that all Cathe work seems to exhast one body part then move on. Tony did one exercise, then switched to a different part, then came back to the original. So Cathe does 5 chest exercises, then 5 back exercises. While Tony would do 1 chest, 1 back, 1 chest, etc.
Cathe seems do be doing the alternating style in STS, though.
HTH,

I purchased P90X and it is mainly based on muscle confusion or doing totally different workouts each day. Since I usually do different workouts on different days, I have not used it in the manner that it is intended. That being said, the workouts that I have done from P90X, I love. I do the shoulders and arms at least once a week and that is my preferred upper body workout right now. I also do ab ripper every week as well which I do with my sister and her core strength has improved. Some discs I haven't done and some I have done limited workouts. Since it is summer, I usually do alot of workouts outside but I'm sure to use more of the program in the winter months when I workout mainly inside. My only complaint is with the chin up or pull up sections as I don't have a pull up bar so that can get frustrating.

That is one of my FAVORITE P90X workouts!

In fact, I'd suggest to anyone who is a bit intimidated by all the pull-ups and push-ups in the first workout of the rotation (chest and back) to start their rotation with S&A instead.

I let P90X sit on my shelf for weeks (if not months!) because after I previewed the workouts, I was intimidated by C&B. When I finally decided to either do the workouts, or get rid of the system, I started with Sh&A, and it made the transition easier.
