To continue our P90X discussion from the other thread...

Would you prefer the P90X series over Cathe's workouts? If so, which P90X videos would you choose over Cathe's and which ones?

Thanks! :)

Kristen

The "must haves" from P90X, IMO, are:
Shoulders and arms (a very effective shoulder/tricep/bicep workout)

Plyo X (plyo--and not the "jump as high as you can" type, but more agility moves and direction changing moves with some high jumps)

Core synergistics (very unique core workout that isn't just the "back and abs" workout most core workouts are. Lots of functional moves.

Ab Ripper X (also included o all of the resistance workouts, so if you get S&A, you get this).

Chest and Back is also good, but is based around push-ups and pull-ups.

I actually like the whole set, because the rotation they set up works very well and is balanced, with sufficient recovery for muscle growth.

For an "ideal" rotation incorporatiing these workouts and Cathe workouts, I would follow the P90X rotation and use Cathe's S&H chest/back (or P90X Chest and back), P90X S&A, PLYO X and Imax2 (alternating doing those each week), Core Synergistics, a yoga workout (Yoga X or another power yoga workout), a kickboxing workout (P90X's Kenpo X is not too intense, but there are some unique arm blocks that aren't in other KB workouts and that were new to me and therefore a challenge), a Cathe lower body workout (either GSL or PLB) (though P90's Legs and back does have some new, effective moves, it wasn't enough for me to keep my booty in the shape I want it to be in! A Firm lower body workout could be used here as well...I find them very booty-friendly!)

In general, I prefer P90X upper body to Cathe upper body, and the sequencing of the exercises and recovery periods have a lot to do with that. I think P90X is much more time-efficient and effective. For example, in S&H, you do a shoulder exercise, then a bicep exercise, then a tricep exercise, then repeat the sequence, then take a break to do dynamic movements and stretches. This gives each muscle group time to recover before it's hit again, but that recovery is active. (I was able to increase weights and or reps on almost every workout with P90X. And got to the point of doing on-the-toe push-ups.)

If Cathe were doing this workout, and following what she usually does, she'd work the shoulders with several sets of several exercises, with a rest between each set, then move on to biceps after the shoulders were exhausted, work them, then move on to triceps. (I really wish we'd see some P90X-like exercise sequences from Cathe.)

Hey Kristen, I just ordered the P90X Shoulders and Arms DVD only. I don't have the cash flow for the whole series, so thought I'd start here since I'm really trying to ramp up my upper body with muscle definition. Can't wait to get it and I'll chime in when I have a chance to use it.

Thank you Kathryn for all of your informtion, this is great!

Is there a P90X Rotation posted somewhere on this or another website?

You are wonderful, thanks for taking the time doing this for me!

I need to figure out the videos I am going to get now. I may have a couple more questions after I look at it again. :)

I posted a P90X-like rotation based on the Hardcore series a while back (in the rotations forum. The "recovery" week is not that great=--because I was sticking primarily to Cathe workouts, and there aren't alot of hers that would fit in this category, IMO--but the other weeks are pretty good.)

Here's the P90X "Classic" rotation (there is also a doubles, adding extra morning cardio 3 days a week after the first week, and another lighter rotation which I think is lame because it omits one body part each week).

Classic rotation:
Weeks 1-3
Day 1 Chest/back & ab ripper
Day 2: Plyometrics
Day 3: Shoulders and arms and abs
Day 4: yoga
Day 5: Lesag and back and abs
Day 6: KenpoX (kickboxing)
Day 7: rest or stretch

Week 4 (recovery)
Day 1: yoga
Day 2: core synergistics
Day 3: KenpoX
Day 4: stretch
Day 5: Core synergistics
Day 6: Yoga
Day 7: rest or stretch

Weeks 5-7
Day 1: Chest/shoulders/triceps and abs
Day 2: plyoX
Day 3: Back and biceps and abs
Day 4: Yoga
Day 5: legs and back and abs
Day 6: Kenpo X
Day 7: rest or stretch

Week 8: repeat week 4

Weeks 9 and 11: repeat weeks 1-3
Weeks 10 and 12: repeat weeks 5-7

Week 13: repeat week 4

Thank you! I am going to print this out so I can start it asap! I know I already said this but I appreciate all of this very much!

how did you just order the shldrs and arms dvd only? i am interested in ordering that one also . i tried to click on that dvd on th beach body .com and it wouldnt come up. laura

I love P90X - I bought the whole set since it seemed to me a better deal. And the music is not really 'rock' to me, I hardly even notice it's there. I thought Tony would bug me, but I actually find him amusing. I bought the set on the $35/month for four months deal.

My favorites would be PlyoX, KenpoX, CardioX and all of the upper body weight workouts. Yoga X is too long, Stretch X is OK but rather ho-hum. And ab-ripper X is included on all the weight DVD's so no need to order that separately. Legs and back isn't really tough enough on the legs for me with the exception of those wall squats.

Kathryn gave you some really awesome information! That looks great!

It is no secret that I prefer Cathe to Tony. I agree with Kathryn that a P90X style from Cathe would be amazing! That would really kick ass.

If I had to choose one DVD of P90X that I think is better than Cathe, I'd say it is AB RipperX. It really is a tough workout...especially if you give it your all.

I just prefer Cathe's personality, set and music. Also, I think it helps me to be led by a female similar to my size, for I am barely 5 foot tall and I believe Cathe is 5'2".

I am not very versed in Cathe's workouts as I still do off Fit-TV, but I borrowed a copy of MIS from my library and Cathe seems to work one muscle group at a time here. I actually only did upper body from MIS yesterday, and am feeling it today. I can go heavier in this workout than other Cathe's I've done. I also like that she does barbell rows (?) and kickbacks for triceps one arm at a time - for me this made upping the weight easier which is why I probably feel soooooo good today with doms.
Is MIS similar is exercise sequence to the p90x's?

No, MIS works one body part at a time before moving on. The only Cathe workouts that are sequenced more like P90X are Push/Pull and Supersets (and maybe some others I've forgotten). But they are less intense than P90X.

I like S&A a lot. But that whole series rocks. This time around though I plan on subbing Cathe's Leg work or the Firm. My legs need more help than Beach Body. But another really good upper body workout is P90X Back and Biceps...I'm inlove with that one the most. Saw the most changes in my arms when I hit week 5 of the classic rotation. Not fond of their yoga, am still a Kest and Finn fan.

I actually don't mind Tony. I end up laughing at him a lot. I like the competitive thing and the rock music. I really like the set too. It just needs heavier leg work.

Great posts Kathryn! I loved P90X and Tony didn't bother me either. I got great results with my 1st rotation (besides eating clean too). I also add some Cathe's workouts to P90X. I sub for KenpoX and YogaX others that I like. I just started a rotation again yesterday. The Core Synergistics about killed me, although it only hurts when I laugh!! I am also adding Freestyle legwork and some Cathe upper bodys as I am doing the P90X Lean rotation. I like most all of the P90X except for the ones I sub. Shoulders & Arms tomorrow....one of my absolute favorites...:)...Carole

I need to look more into P90X and learn more about it so I know what to order from their vs. Cathe. Do they give you rotations to do every month like Cathe does?

Thanks for your info. I have alread learned so much from all of you!

Kristen

Kristen...P90X comes with three rotations. They are all 13 week rotations. The rotations are Classic, Doubles and Lean....:)...Carole
