Before I lose my mind...

There was an article in one of these recently (I think it was) that I tore out and cannot find anywhere - and it is about to drive me nuts!! I have been going through my old issues and tearing out what I was interested in and I KNOW I tore it out but of course, there is the chance that memory is not serving me correctly! It was an article about something and within that article was a chart on how to start running. It was something like run 1 min, walk 2 and you gradually built that up to a 5K, I'm pretty sure. Anybody know what the heck I am talking about, and what magazine and issue it was in? Thank you in advance.

I don't know about that particular article, but I know a lot of people like the Couch to 5K program:

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

They advocate alternating walking with running, then upping the amount of time you run each week. And I think they have two versions; 1 done with time and 1 done with distance. I used something similar when I started running and it works! Good luck.

I'm with Anne. Runnersworld and coolrunning have the best 'start to run' programs. That's where the fitness mags get their information from.

Yes, yes, yes!! I know exactly which article you're talking about!! It's in Oxygen. I was just organizing all my issues into a binder, and I just tore this article out too! My only problem is I left the binder at my in-laws, so it may take me a few days to find the exact article, but it was definitely in Oxygen!! I will post again as soon as I find it:D

Dania - ahhhhh, thank you!! I may be begging you for the chart :)

Thanks to everyone who helped out. Janie - I could not view that article but I don't get that magazine so I know that wouldn't have been it though. I'm like you - I just want to KNOW I can do it :)

Anne - I have heard of that program but I'm not that dedicated...yet!

Clare - I will have to look more closely at those magazines. I've glanced at them but that's about it. Thank you.

Okay Shana, I found it (hope it's the right one!)

For some reason, it only says Spring 2009, and it doesn't give a month like they usually do. (The fitness model on the front is Amber Elizabeth, and she's in a pink bikini, if that helps.)

The article is called Crank Up Your Cardo - A Beginner's Guide to Running. And here's the chart you were referring to:

Oxygen's exclusive plan to running your first 5K race:

MON TUES WED THURS FRI SAT SUN
WK 1 1mi rest 1mi rest 1mi rest 1.5mi
WK 2 rest 1.5mi rest 1.5mi rest 2mi rest
WK 3 1.5mi rest 1.5mi* rest 2mi rest 2.5mi
WK 4 rest 2mi rest 2mi* rest 3mi rest
WK 5 2.5mi rest 2.5mi* rest 2.5mi rest 3.5mi
WK 6 rest 3mi rest 3.5mi* rest 4mi rest
WK 7 2.5mi rest 4mi* rest 3mi rest 4mi
WK 8 rest 2mi* rest rest 1.5mi rest RACE DAY!

All runs, except those starred, should be run at a conversational pace, an RPE of five. The starred runs are tempo runs, so ramp them up to an RPE of seven or eight.

Hope this helps!

Dani - bless you, bless you, bless you!:D Yes, that is exactly the one. I have stuff that I tore out of that one too - just not this page (or article - whatever it was!) Thanks a million times over. Have you done the abs in that one? I think it is Amber Elizabeth who demonstrates - she is in a yellow top and blue shorts or something like that. Wow - talk about effective ab work.

Thanks again - you are my hero ;)
