Our litigious society

I hate our litigious society!

I had to go to the elementary school yesterday because my DD had royally turfed it on the slick walk and gashed up her knee. The school nurse called because she had washed out the cut but really thought it needed some neosporin and she's not allowed to put any on. Of course I didn't mind going in--I would have wanted to see my daughter anyway since it was such a bad fall. But it's so ridiculous that the school isn't even allowed to put some ointment on a cut! Our previous school district didn't even have school nurses, but what good is it to have one if they can't do anything?!?

My kids can't take cough drops to school--they are technically a drug. Our state legislature had to pass a bill to allow children to carry their inhalers. It used to be that they had to keep them in the school office--how unreal is that to a kid with asthma where every second counts? Now we have to fill out a form and provide a doctor's note at the beginning of every school year just so they are allowed to carry it on their person.

When will common sense prevail? We are so burdened with restrictions just because people will sue anyone for anything. Should I now turn around and sue the school district because my daughter fell--thereby further reducing the amount of money used to educate my children?

I'm not saying that there aren't legitimate reasons for people to sue. I'm talking about people that sue just for money or attention without good cause.

Ugh! Whew! End of rant. Climb off soapbox.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's fall. Hopefully she is doing better.

My daughter fell on Tuesday on her way to school. She turned around and came home. She rested on the couch the rest of the day with an icepack on her knee. She is fine now. That darn ice can be very dangerous.

You are right - there are people that sue for little or no reason and then there are the ones that deserve to sue.

Completely agree. We now have a "no food" policy at our school. You can't have any food for any school parties or birthday celebrations or anything ever for any reason except school lunches. There was some craft project recently that in years past we've used Cheerios on (not to eat, mind you, but to glue on to a poster board) that we were told we could not use Cheerios on anymore. Kids can't eat snacks during the day (it used to be it was OK if it was fresh fruit/veg - now, not even that). They are concerned about kids w/allergies. Which is a legitimate concern, of course, but this seems to go too far.

We also have the same rule about medicine. It's really frustrating. I don't blame the schools - they have to protect themselves. It's a shame that the very few people who are unreasonable ruin it for everyone.

Elsie,

I hear what you're saying. I am a family daycare provider & it is the same for us. I have to take lengthy tarining to give meds. whether prescription or OTC. I have to have written permission to apply SUNBLOCK!!
At our school we are fortunate that our nurse will give the kids Tylenol if needed. I'm sure she's not supposed to & hope it doesn't bite her in the butt some day. I do appreciate it though. The kids can't even keep a bottle of water with them w/o a Dr's note!!
Hope your daughter is doing well today.

I remember if I got a headache in HS, I would just take a tylenol for it that I had in my locker. Now if DD gets a headache, I would have to come from work in another town to give her something for it.

My daughter is fine today--thanks for asking. You guys are very sweet--thanks for your concern.

Written permission required for sunblock absolutely takes the cake, as does not being able to use cheerios for a craft project.

Remember when they had that paste in elementary school that everyone used to eat because it smelled so good? I'm sure that wouldn't be allowed anymore, LOL.

Have a good day, and be careful on the ice.
