OT - Jimmy all "growed" up

Cathlete
Many of you know the story of Tucker and Jimmy, and have seen photos of Jimmy through out this past year. As so many of my Cathe friends have expressed interest in him, I thought I'd share some photos of him - he's such a DOG now - no longer a puppy. :-( But, he's still a great doggie!

Jimmy and me his second day home (not a good shot of me at all - but Jimmy is cute!):

RE: OT - Jimmy all

What a cut doggie Christine. I love the pictures. My dd has a stuffed dog that looks exactly like him and she named him Checkers.

What breed of dog is he? We have no clue what to look for if we ever go to get one. Is this breed of dog good with kids?

RE: OT - Jimmy all

Aww - thanks - he'd love to be pet and cuddled! He's definitely a lover!

Jimmy is an Australian Shepherd. They can be good with kids, but they are herding dogs, so in dogs with a strong herding instinct, they can be nippy. So you have to be careful about that. And they are very high energy dogs as well as very intelligent (he's smarter than I am - which may not be a good comparison! :+). Perfect distance running or hiking companions - but they need a lot of exercise or they get bored and destructive. But, they are very loving, loyal dogs (read - they will follow you everywhere - you do not shower or use the restroom alone if you have an Aussie). Neither of my aussies (Tucker was one as well) where nippy - but both will use their bodies to gently herd our neighbor's 2 year old back to us, if they think she's too far from the adults - it's really sweet.

You might want to check out www.dogbreedinfo.com - they have a lot of great information on various breeds. And definitely consider a breed rescue - puppies are a pain to train, and you can often adopt a dog who is one or two, and has a personality that is already formed so you know what you're getting when you get him/her. You can find couch potato Aussies.

Christine,

Jimmy's such a sweetie, I could just squeeze him! Thanks for sharing these. And BTW, I'm never happy with photos of myself, either, but I think you look pretty!

RE: OT - Jimmy all

Christine, what a lovely animal you've raised. LOL at him being smarter than you. Aren't all of our pets smarter? Look who's working to provide them with good food, a warm home and someone to pet and cuddle them. I would love to be a pet of mine....

RE: OT - Jimmy all

Cathy - you're too sweet! I do laugh at that photo - to think that he once fit neatly in my lap (he still thinks he fits, but it's not as neatly!). One day you'll meet him, I hope!

Robin - thank you! He made it easy. I would love to be one of my pets. Obviously you know where the name "Jimmy" comes from - my fellow Parrothead!

RE: OT - Jimmy all

Christine,

he is sooooooo adorable. What a handsome dog!!!! Oh my, how did the time fly by, it seems like yesterday when you got him.

By the way, I think you look very beautiful on the picture. I can't wait to meet you in person!!!!!

Karen, Aussies in general are very family oriented dogs, very kid friendly as long as they come from a reputable breeder and are socialize properly from a young age.

I have 5 (yes, you read right FIVE, yes, I am a nut case) Mini Aussies. When I got my first Mini Aussie, Scooter last year in April, someone told me that Aussies/Mini Aussies are like potato chips, can't just have one :)

My dogs are basically the same as Christine's Jimmy, just in a smaller, more compact package. If bred right, they have the same character traits and high energy as their bigger cousins.

I totally second what Christine is saying about Aussies being a velcro dog, own an Aussie and wave good-bye to privacy in your bathroom. I have 5 dogs sitting in front of me or around me whenever I shower or use the bathroom. Definitely not a breed for everyone.

I am out with my dogs 2 to 3 hours at a minimum every day, hiking, dog park, throwing balls/frisbee, agility, walking/runing, any less than 2 hours per day my house will be destruction central.

There are some couch potato Aussies, the male that my little girl Pepper was bred with and had puppies was the quintessential couch potato, Pepper is somewhat lazy, she will do whatever I ask her to do, but she is perfectly happy just hanging out next to me on the sofa. Unfortunately, those couch potato character traits didn't rub off on their puppies :) She had 7 puppies, so far one of them has turned out to be a little more laid back, I kept 3 of the 7 pups originally and ALL of them are HIGH energy.

Aussies/Mini Aussies come in all kinds of colors (black tri, red tri, blue merle, red merle and all kinds of variations). Christine's Jimmy is a black tri-color. I have 4 black tri-colors (which is my personal favorite) and a red tri-color. The other pup I kept was what is called a blue merle, Maverick, but he now lives with my dear friend Virginie.

If you go on my picture trail you will find all colors except of a red merle.

If you are looking into getting an Aussie, talk to people who have one, as Christine mentioned, they are extremely smart and you ALWAYS have to be one step ahead of them, for them to be the best they can be, they will NEED a job, be it bringing the morning paper, waking up the kids (as they do in my house :)), agility, retrieving balls or frisbees, search and rescue, herding, whatever you can think of, if you don't do that, they will find a job and it usually isn't something that you want them to do, digging, barking, redecorating your house, redesigning your backyard ....... If you don't have 2 hours a day to devote to them, it won't be the breed for you.

They are BEAUTIFUL dogs, just look at Jimmy, they are extremely smart and easy to train, BUT they need and want to be involved in every aspect of your life. If you can't handle that devotion, a constant companion at your side, and the enourmous amount of exercise, it is not the dog for your family, the dog won't be happy and you won't be happy.

Aussies have become almost as popular as Labradors now, but if you go to a shelter you will find a huge amount of Aussies up for adoption, because a lot of people don't know what they are getting themselves into. It's not a low maintenance dog.

I have owned Labradors and German Shepherds before, I like them but I would NEVER ever get anything else than an Aussie (well, a Mini Aussie in my case), they are my kind of dog!

Sorry this was so long-winded. Sorry, Christine, didn't want to take away from Jimmy, as you know, I am just very passionate about that breed and I get easily carried away.

Big hugs to the Jimmster!!!!

Oh Christine! What a beautiful, precious dog. He takes my breath away!

Just last summer, we lost our beloved dog, Striker, who was a mix of Australian Shepherd and Retriever. Your Jimmy looks so much like him.
He makes me miss Striker so much!

Thank you for sharing these wonderful photos! :)

RE: OT - Jimmy all

Awww, he's soooo cute!! I can't believe it, it seems like you just got him! And you're too cute also, Christine! :)

RE: OT - Jimmy all

JeanneMarie - Tucker was hit by a car last March, and the Catheites helped me through a horrible time. So, I do understand how tough it is to be without our beloved pets. {{{{HUGS}}}} An Aussie/Retriever sounds like a wonderful mix. Such great traits.

RE: OT - Jimmy all

Carola my dear and fellow Aussie Lover - I could never be upset with you for adding information! I'm as passionate about the breed, but I'm not as eloquent. So thanks for posting!

Just to add to what Carola said - Jimmy does go to doggie day care twice a week, and then for a long hike on the weekends. This keeps him happy, and not destructive.

RE: OT - Jimmy all

Catherine - Thank you! Oh yeah! He's very lively and keeps me on my toes. (Wait, I thought I had teenagers for that. :+)
