OT~Coughing attacks!

Can anyone recommend a cough med that works? Something OTC? I start my fall session today and wondering how I am going to get thru classes withhout coughing my head off. I am dealing with a sinus infection and when I lay flat the coughing starts, sometimes I have the attacks even standing. Sleeping on the couch sitting up the last three nites has not been fun. Waaaah! TIA!

Debbie,

I've had a bad cough for almost 2 weeks now. I have the same problem you do--sinuses that drain and then trigger the cough. And you're right, cardio in particular really stirs it upx( .

I tried OTC Delsym and it didn't help at all. I finally got a prescription cough syrup that I've taken at night only, and boy oh boy, that first dose really knocked me for a loop--I slept close to 12 hours!! I really needed it though, because I hadn't been able to sleep for several nights in a row. I've also been using Flonase which is helping to drain my sinuses. At this point my sinuses are draining and I feel some pressure around my eyes, but I haven't seen any indication of infection--greenish drainage, fever, etc. If you have a full blown sinus infection you should really get to the doctor--you probably need an antibiotic. HTH and I hope you're feeling better soon. I can vouch for you that nothing takes it out of you like a persistent cough ;(

Well Debbie, you said OTC so this might not benefit you. But I have found nothing OTC that will help my cough. Doc says it's viral and will last around 2 to 3 weeks. He called me in something called benzonatate and it has helped quite a bit. At least I'm getting some sleep now. It doesn't make me drowsy at all. Perhaps if you can't get to the doc, maybe he would call something in for you?
Feel better soon.

Debbie,

I have been taking Tylenol Sinus Severe Congestion (Daytime) and it is working GREAT. It's stopping my post nasal drip so I don't cough too much. It's fantasic and is working for hubby too. We both have a cold.

I hope you feel better soon!

:)

When I have severe coughs though, nothing OTC really helps. I know my son's pediatrician has prescribed him this cough medicine with codeine in it. It totally stops the cough but has to be taken at bedtime, because it knocks him out.

Thanks Michele! I'm sorry to hear you are suffering with the same thing and for TWO WEEKS! Funny thing is THANKFULLY, I don't have any stuffiness, eye tearing, blowing my nose or any "green" stuff! YUCK! I am just dealing with sporadic spells of coughing mostly when I lie down but occasionally just out of the clear blue, while just walking around. I had hoped to not have to go to the doc and just get over it quickly but may cave & do that. Thanks for answering and get well SOON yourself! :)

Thanks Lisa and Dani! Maybe I'll try to pick up some of that daytime med Dani and if I am not better after tonight I'll probably go see the doc. Was hoping to avoid her. I may just have to wait it out. Hope you both get better soon. Sounds like it is hitting many right now. Thanks so much for your advice.

I'm just at the end of some nasty bug, and in the coughy stage (almost over). I drink lots of water (with "Emergen-C" in), and take Halls Plus cough drops regularly when I'm teaching.

Nasal irrigation can help dry up (but not dry out excessively) the sinuses. I was using my Neti pot (little "Alladin's Lamp" pot without a cover, that you put saline solution in, stick in one nostril, bend over and let drain out the other nostril) quite regularly at the start of this thing, and it really helped me keep from going through boxes and boxes of kleenex!)

P.S. If you find a good solution, let me know, because I have a student who has been coughing since day 1 (though I think it's partly a nervous tic---whatever it is, it's grossing me out).

You're right about fluids--drink, drink, drink! I drink alot of water and hot green tea with honey and lemon. I also take extra vit C. I haven't tried the nasal irrigation. The Halls cough drops don't work for me but I do like to suck on them nontheless. I like cherry and honey lemon the best.

Kathryn, if your students have seasonal allergy problems as I do, this problem could hang around awhile. I usually have varying degrees of symptoms throughout the year--UGH!!

Thanks Kathryn & Michele! I seem to be doing okay walking around here today and am HOPING that it will be the same once I start JUMPING around in class! I've been taking my Vit. C and drinking lots so I'll see what happens. I called the doc and since I don't have any "green" stuff she said to just go buy an anithistamine or sinus med OTC. She recommended Robitusson. (sp.?) I appreciate your thoughts and Kathryn, hope your student gets well soon. I know the frustration of the cough when you can't control it in public. Quite embarrassing! I am headed to class at 3:15. Thanks everyone!

Hi Debbie,

My doc and the kids doc always prescribes Donatussin. I've tried that Delsym syrup as well. That didn't really help. We just got over the same thing in our house.

Hope you feel better really soon!
