Opinions about step machines wanted please!!

I would really welcome your opinions about step machines. At the moment I have a mini stepper which is hydraulic and has dependent pedal movement. It was very cheap (about £20) but has lasted a year without any problem. It loses tension after about 20 mins and needs to "cool down"! DH and I are thinking of adding a full-size step machine to our home fitness collection (and yes, before you ask, the treadmill is already getting a lot of use - LOL!!!!)

I wondered if any of you either have a stepper at home or use one in a gym and what your experiences have been. In the past I've found that an intense 15/20 mins on just my cheap mini-stepper has really toned my butt and hamstrings as well as burning fat. This really helped to kick start my weight loss early lasy year! Plus I enjoyed it because it was such a short time to spend to get those results.

Any opinions wuld be most welcome, including brands used as well as results. I already have my eyes peeled on a reasonably priced Tunturi C500 or the Kettler Power Stepper. Stairclimbers' StepMill is way out of our range financially right now and we wouldn't have the room for it anyway - otherwise we'd be getting that probably!!!!

As an aside, whilst I find that tall box (ie large stepping work on a 14-17" "box" a la Firm) really bulks me up, smaller steps (eg a step machine or using my Reebok step) tones me without bulk whilst burning fat - it's fascinating how our bodies respond so differently to the same type of exercise but with a slight variation!

Look forward to your responses.

I have used a Stairmaster step machine at a gym before and have really liked it. It offers a variety of program settings and is very smooth. It also gives some safety support on the foot pads/pedals so your feet don't slip off (they have little safety sides on them-also on the front) Recently, I moved and joined a gym closer to where I live. They don't have any Stairmasters, but they have another brand-the name escapes me now (I can get it for you if I go there this weekend). I hate this brand because it is not smooth, there is just a flat pedal (no safety sides), and it goes way too slow. I probably will not use it ever again. I hope this helps!!!

Hi Fitnik, I recently bought a step machine. Its a precor, gym quality. I bought it used at a fitness specialty store for $400. A bit pricey but as my friend always says "buy cheap, buy twice"! I really like it but its pretty intense so I like to do circuits alternating the treadmill with the stepper. After even 15 minutes on the stepper, I am DRENCHED with sweat. Its great on a day when you dont feel like doing a video or maybe you want to watch a show, movie whatever. I watched the movie "Clueless" the other day while on it, and found it to keep my mind off of how freakin' hard I was working. Tally-ho!! Judy

LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-02 AT 09:58AM (Est)[p]Thanks for your advice. We just ordered a Tunturi C900 - that really will be the last piece of cardio equipment for a while - we're really really broke now!!

You can't beat good equipment for a short intense workout when you're really pushed for time!
