I'm fortunate because in my industry, dressing for success was an 80's thing. I work for one of the big three aerospace firms where even the Vice Presidents wears casual clothes. There are a couple who still wear suits but they look out of place, LOL! We do have a dress code but it's not strictly enforced.
What is noticed at our company these days is a person's performance. It wasn't like that a few years ago but the last few layoffs have pretty much weeded out the dead wood. I have been here 25 years and have solidified a good reputation. I am in middle management and don't want to go much higher than this because of the stress at that level. I want to retire a healthy person. This has given me the luxury of being who I am at work...not doing the "perception is reality" thing. It's very liberating.
