:) Hi Everyone!
Okay, I work as a teacher's aide for a junior high, going on about three years now. In my time there I have watched with horror the lunch most of the kids eat. The cafeteria lunch is slightly better then the snack bar, but only because there is a salad bar that comes with the cafeteria lunch or can be purchased seperately. Now the snack bar is of course packed with every unhealthy lunch item that can be imagined. Pizza, sub sandwiches, Little Debbie snack cakes (think honey buns, donuts and oatmeal creme pies) burritos, chips, and cookies. Oh and at break time, that's in the morning, there are fresh baked cookies offered. Now I have nothing against fresh baked cookies, every once in a while I crave them myself. (Although I prefer to bake them so I know what goes in them) But these kids will have them EVERY MORNING! And here we are as a staff complaining about the behavior of them, when in reality running through their veins is the high fructose corn syrup and saturated/trans fat, and excess bad carbs that has to be part of the blame. Sorry to be so talkative on this, but here is where I NEED your advice. Two sixth graders that are really great kids, started complaining about the lack of healthy food. So I encouraged them to do something about it. They went around and got over half of the kids at school to sign a paper saying they too wanted to see healthier options at the snack bar, (pretty amazing huh?) as well as quite a few of the staff. Months and months later they were told they would be able to present it to the school board. It is on the agenda for tom. night. The student's asked me if I could write an outline for them, as they only get five minutes to present their argument. As you can see I'm not to good with being short on words here. :) I know some points I would like to highlight, but I know you guys here are really good with health issues. So any advice you can give will be so greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance, Lisa:)

Have the kids compiled any information on their own? If not, perhaps open with a few cold, hard facts about the obesity epidemic, which has been all over the news and will be easy to dig up. Some statistics and the health risks would be good. You/they might also include nutritional information about all the junk that's sold at the snack bar and how it stacks up against the proposed alternatives. One thing that is done at my new (health-conscious) school is that the students eat for half of the lunch period (20 minutes) and then they are required to walk around the track for the other half. They go out in shifts...one group eats first, the other walks first. Just a few thoughts...hope something in there might be of help. Good luck!!

This sounds wonderful, Lisa! I agree with seeking guns about giving some factual statistics. In addition to long-term health facts, maybe you can throw in some studies regarding the immediate effects of junk food on the ability to learn. I believe I've seen information about this. You can say that by presenting kids with such bad food options, you are giving them education with one hand and taking away their ability to absorb it with the other.

wow, kudos to those kids!! i'm very impressed that they are trying to do something about it.

i would stick to the statistics that you guys find, and definitely hit on the points regarding effects of HFCS in the kids' system in terms of their behavior, and how these kids need responsible adults making responsible choices when it comes to what they are being offered. how what we are feeding these kids is what is nourishing our future, etc...

let us know how it goes!

Wow, thanks so much for the quick responses! Yes, I found some statistics last night for them to open up with, and the statistics on obese children are rather frightening. Great idea on including nutritional content as well. Nancy, I love your line with the bad food options they are giving them education on the one hand and taking away their ability to absorb it with the other...so well put. Thanks, Gayle for the website it looks like it will be of great help. Thanks, too Jenn I agree on the kids saying that they need responsible adults making responsible choices on what they're offered for lunch. Great information everyone, thanks so much and I will definitely let you know what happens!
Lisa :)
