Ok so Rhythmic Step is not for the uncoordinated

I'm new to Cathe...been doing her stuff for about 6 weeks now. I guess I got a little overconfident in my choreography abilities and decided to attempt Rhythmic Step today    . All I can say is I didn't get much of a workout in...as standing there with you're mouth hanging open staring at the screen in total confusion doesn't really count as aerobic exercise ;( . I've been doing fairly decent with all of her other stuff...or so I thought...so I figured I'd give it a try. I finally just took out the darn DVD half way through as I was getting so frustrated!! That one is quite a challenge for the choreographically (nice word huh :D ) challenged. It may be a while before I tackle that one again :D .

combo three still gets me and it took me a year to get used to those back shuffles b/c for some reason i was ending up on the wrong side

I did this one today and I have to say it is so much fun and it all fits really well together once you get the steps down. It is long and I find it to be pretty challenging once you get all the steps down. Be patient!

Yeah - that's how I did it the first time. It did get easier. The IMax's have an advantage in that even if you're totally lost, the blast will be easy and allow you to get your heart rate up. Just jump around a bit in the mean time. Rhythmic Step and Step Blast and some of the other steady state cardio ones are more challenging - think how proud you'll be when you finally master it!

That's the thing...I did Step Blast (well I did one of the premixes that included SJP as well...but it had a lot of Step Blast on it) and didn't have anywhere near the problems with that one for some reason. I think that's what gave me the false sense of choreographic wisdom to attempt it :D, and I was doing ok until we got to the second combination...I didn't even make it to the third I don't think...heehee. I want get it down too as it does look like a blast to do once you can maneuver through all of the choreography.

I've ordered the older step workouts so hopefully I'll get a little more used to her style and sometime in the near future I'll attempt it again and maybe make it through 3/4 of it :7 :7 !

Another suggestion is...do another workout so you get your cardio in for the day...then put in RS and work on one section until you are able to do it. If it takes you 3-4-5 times of doing one section so be it. But this way you won't feel like you're being cheated out of your cardio.

RS is not one of my Cathe favorites. It's too dancey/steppy for my tastes but I still put it in once in awhile to change things up.

That's how I learned the workout! I would do my main workout first, then I would put RS in and learn it. I would keep rewinding until I got the steps down. Since I already got my workout in, I didn't get frustrated when I stood behind my step with my mouth hanging open!!! Stick with it. You'll learn it!

This one IS tough to learn, but after 5 years (I think it came out in 2001), it still doesn't get boring! I just did it this morning.

Hey Deni,

Suggestion that help me finally master was not to look at Cathe at all but just listen to her cues. I was so busy trying to follow her foot work instead of listening that once I stop looking and starting listening I finally got it. Hope the suggestion helps.

Thanks everyone...I like the suggestion of just putting it in after I've already done my cardio and just learning it piece by piece. I'm definately going to do that. I'm getting better and better at her choreography in general so I'll get eventually I guess :) .

Therese...it's funny you suggest that because yesterday when I was doing Low Max I found myself doing that...not looking at the screen but instead just following her verbal cues, it worked pretty well for me. From what I remember of RS though even the verbal cueing is pretty fast so I think with that one it's all about practice, practice, practice :) . With many of the others I've done so far she gives more of a transition phase between each combo whereis in RS it's one right after the other without alot of "learning time" between each combo.

I'm also realizing that when your on the side of the step you can't look at her at all because it really gets you all mixed up because you aren't using the same leg that she is, you're using the opposite one...so this was getting me all mixed up too as I was trying to use the same leg as her and I was always ending up on the wrong side of the step (does this make any sense :7 ).

Anyhoo... thanks again for all of your advice and helpful hints...I really appreciate it!!!!

This is probably my absolute favorite step tape! I was like you when I first started it though. It took me a long while, rewinding and going back over, before I was able to master it. Now I love doing it - it's so much fun! Keep at it - it'll be worth it! Susan
